Contributions to the TDK (Turkish Language Corporation) Online Dictionary of Proverbs and Idioms from the novel Kuyruklu Yıldız Altında Bir İzdivaç (A Marriage Under the Comet)

Idioms are part of the historical, geographical, literary and human memory of the society. Therefore, idioms contain clues that will enable a society to be recognized from different aspects It reveals the value of the words in the vocabulary of the language in terms of their functions, through the richness of expression. Idioms have always been found worth examining because of their meanings and their ability to provide agility in expression. Languages abundantly use idioms that are among the vocabulary of the language to reason the life that the community they belong to, and to express it to others by putting it into thought through words. Thus, by means of idioms, it is possible to follow the socio-cultural differentiations that occur from time to time in the society, the lifestyle and perspective of the speakers of the language inherited from the past and the changes in them. It is also possible to follow the aspects of this perspective that are reflected in the language through words and expressions, their origin and structure, the choice of words by the speakers and the meanings they attribute to words or phrases. All kinds of changes in the meaning of idioms such as expansion, contraction, improvement, deterioration, and events such as disappearance or derivation have been the subject of different studies. This study, based on the first edition of Hüseyin Rahmi GÜRPINAR’s novel , Kuyruklu Yıldız Altında Bir İzdivaç (=A Marriage Under the Comet). With this study, all the vocabulary in the novel was indexed, idioms that were in the vocabulary of Turkish a hundred years ago were determined, and the ones that reached today's Turkish from these idioms, as well as how these idioms continue their existence (pronunciation, word order, word preference and meaning) are determined and they are used for idiom studies. intended to contribute. The study is limited to the idiom existence of the mentioned novel. In the study, examining Hüseyin Rahmi and this novel, the way the author reflected the cultural and language characteristics of his own period in his works was taken into consideration. Due to the fact that the author frequently refers to the elements of the language spoken by the people in his works, both in terms of language and social context, the aspect of giving the culture of the period and the use of the language in its natural environment with sections from real life has been influential in the selection of the work and the author. In order to form the corpus that will be the subject of the study, the Arabic lettered edition of the and the last edition with the Latin alphabet were read comparatively and the text was checked. The text was sorted through the indexing program and all the words and compound structures were listed in alphabetical order. The meanings of all these words and idioms lined up has been determined according to their context. The idioms and their meanings (both the word group that makes up the idiom and its meaning) were compared with the TDK Online Dictionary of Proverbs and Idioms, and idioms that were not included in the dictionary or that had a change in their structure or differentiation in their meanings were determined. In addition, some compound structures that do not had the feature idiom (which cannot be accepted as idiom) were also lined up as a list and controversial issues as to whether these were idiom had also been addressed.
