This cross-sectional study, conducted on 4003 participants aged between 18 and 45, aims to contribute to orthorexia nervosa (ON) research by examining the relationship between ON, body image and nutritional adequacy. The Orthorexia Nervosa-11 scale (ORTO-11) and body perception scale were applied to individuals, and food consumption records were taken with a 24-hour dietary recall method. The study found that more individuals with orthorexia nervosa (ON) considered themselves overweight compared to non-ON individuals. Evaluating diet quality, the mean adequacy ratio was significantly higher in ON individuals. Nutrient adequacy ratios for total fiber, magnesium, zinc, thiamine, folic acid, and vitamin C were higher, while those for carbohydrate and iron were lower in ON individuals. Additionally, increasing the number of snacks, protein, and total fiber adequacy decreased the ORTO-11 score. Distorted body image perception may be a risk factor for ON, but healthy eating fixation does not lead to nutrient inadequacy unless it involves progressive food restriction.

Betanin, widely found in red beets, is a natural bioactive compound with health beneficial effects. Of recent interest is the impact of sepsis on the reproductive system. The present study first evaluated the effects of betanin on the changes in oxidative stress/antioxidant, inflammatory, ER stress/antiapoptotic responses and 8-OHdG parameters as well as TLR4 and NF-κB activity on LPS-induced testis damage. The male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group, LPS group, oral betanin groups (50 and 110 mg/kg) and oral betanin plus LPS groups. The sepsis model was induced by LPS (10 mg/kg) injection in rats. Animals were intragastrically treated with betanin an hour before the LPS challenge. Betanin supplementation at high dose stimulated the activation of SOD in rat testis tissue and prevented LPS-induced oxidative stress. Consistently, betanin conferred protection by reducing the increasing levels of TNF, VCAM-1 and MPO in tissue against the inflammatory effects of LPS. Betanin also inhibited LPS-activated apoptotic ER stress-CHOP pathway and significantly ameliorated pathological findings. Besides, NF-κB and TLR4 expressions were decreased in testes of rats in HD Be + LPS group compared with the LPS group. High expression of Bcl-2 was associated with the anti-apoptotic effects of betanin in LPS-induced testis injury.

This study investigates the protective role of Hispidulin on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in rats. Rats were divided into three groups: control, ARDS, ARDS+ Hispidulin. The ARDS models were established by injecting rats with oleic acid. Hispidulin (100 mg/kg) was injected i.p. an hour before ARDS. Myeloperoxidase (MPO), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), Lipid Peroxidation (LPO), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione (GSH), and Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) were determined by ELISA. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) expression was described by RT-qPCR. Caspase-3 immunostaining was performed to evaluate apoptosis. Compared with the model group, a significant decrease was observed in the MPO, IL-8, MAPK, ACE, LPO levels, and TNF-α expression in the ARDS+ Hispidulin group. Moreover, reduced caspase-3 immunoreactivity and activity of ACE were detected in the Hispidulin+ARDS group. The protective effect of Hispidulin treatment may act through inhibition of the ACE activity and then regulation of inflammatory cytokine level and alteration of apoptosis.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates are abundantly used endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of single and combined exposures to BPA and/or di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in prenatal and lactational period on rat male reproductive system in later stages of life. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly to four groups (n = 3/group): Control (corn oil); DEHP (30 mg/kg/day); BPA (50 mg/kg/day); and BPA+ DEHP (30 mg/kg/day DEHP and 50 mg/kg/day BPA). Groups exposed to EDCs through 6–21 gestational days and lactation period by intragastric lavage. Male offspring (n = 6/group) from each mother were fed till adulthood and were then euthanized. Later, reproductive hormones, sperm parameters, and oxidative stress parameters were determined. In conclusion, we can suggest that prenatal and lactational exposure to BPA and DEHP may cause adverse effects in male reproductive system in later stages of life especially after combined exposure.
