Background: It is known that the increase in oxidants and proinflammatory cytokines, as well as the decrease in antioxidants, play a role in ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of ramipril have been studied in various diseases. This study aims to investigate the effect of ramipril on I/R-induced ovarian damage in rats. Methods: Rats were divided into healthy (HG), sham (SG), ovary I/R (OIR), and ramipril + ovary I/R (ROIR) groups (n = 6/each group). One hour before the surgical procedures, ROIR was given 2 mg/kg ramipril. The lower abdomen of the SG, OIR, and ROIR was surgically opened. Right ovarian tissues of OIR and ROIR were subjected to 2 hours of ischemia and 6 hours of reperfusion. Then, all animals were euthanized, and their right ovaries were removed. Ovarian tissues were examined for oxidants (malondialdehyde), antioxidants (total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase), and proinflammatory cytokines (nuclear factor kappa-B, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin 1 beta, and interleukin-6) analysis was performed. Tissues were examined histopathologically. Results: The ovarian tissue of the OIR, which underwent the I/R procedure, exhibited a significant increase in oxidant and proinflammatory cytokine levels, along with a decrease in antioxidant levels (P < .001). Ramipril suppressed the I/R-induced increase in oxidants and pro-inflammatory cytokines and the decrease in antioxidants (P < .001). Ramipril also attenuated I/R-induced histopathological damage in ovarian tissue (P < .05). Conclusion: Ramipril treatment may be a treatment strategy to protect ovarian tissue against oxidative and inflammatory damage of I/R.

Background: Ischemia is a condition in which blood flow to tissues is decreased or entirely stopped for various reasons. The reperfusion process exacerbates damage caused by ischemia in the organs and tissues. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are mainly responsible for ischemia-reperfusion (IR) damage. ROS increase results in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and oxidative stress. In the literature, taxifolin reportedly suppresses ROS production. This study aimed to determine the effect of taxifolin, which is a flavonoid, on IR injury of the sciatic nerve in rats. Methods: This study divided 30 albino Wistar rats into 3 groups: IR without medication (IR) group, taxifolin applied IR (TAX+IR) group, and only dissection made to the sciatic nerve sham group (SHAM). Sciatic nerve injury was induced by applying 2 hours of ischemia and 3 hours of reperfusion to the abdominal aorta and iliolumbar arteries. Biochemical and histopathologic investigations then were performed on sciatic nerve tissues. Malondialdehyde, total glutathione, glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase were analyzed as oxidative stress markers, and tumor necrosis factor–α and interleukin-1β levels were evaluated as inflammatory stress markers in biochemical tests. Results: The IR group has statistically significantly high oxidant and cytokine levels and low antioxidant levels compared with the TAX+IR group. Taxifolin treatment was also shown to cause significant histopathologic improvement. Conclusions: We suggest that taxifolin may be effective in preventing IR injury of the sciatic nerve.

Background: Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is defined as a complex pathologic process that begins with the oxygen deprivation of tissue, continues with the production of reactive oxygen radicals (ROS), and expands with an inflammatory response. This study investigates the protective effects of sunitinib, an anticancer drug with demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, against liver IR damage. Our study aims to investigate the biochemical and histopathologic effects of sunitinib on IR-induced liver damage in rats. Methods: Albino Wistar male rats were divided into 3 groups: liver IR control (IR), 25 mg/kg sunitinib + liver IR (S+IR), and sham operation (SHAM). Results: In the liver tissue of the IR group, oxidant and proinflammatory cytokine levels such as malondialdehyde, nuclear factor κ B, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1β increased compared with the SHAM and S+IR groups. In addition, antioxidant levels such as total glutathione, glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase were found to be significantly lower in the IR group than in the SHAM and S+IR groups. Although severe histopathologic damage was observed in the IR group, it was evaluated as mild in the S+IR group. The results obtained suggest that sunitinib may be helpful in the treatment of liver IR injury.

Tuncer, O.N.; Kemaloğlu, C.; Erbasan, O.; Gölbaşı, İ.; Türkay, C.; Bayezid, Ö.
Introduction Donor organ shortage is still a problem for heart transplantation. Only 10% of patients in waiting list undergo heart transplantation. Over the last 5 years, 2 different continuous flow pumps, the HeartMate II and the HeartWare, have been successful clinically in the alternative treatment of patients with end-stage heart disease. Methods Fifty-five patients underwent left ventricular assist device implantation between 2011 and 2014. Patients were followed on pump support for complications and intraoperative outcomes. Potential device-related complications include infections, bleeding liver dysfunction, renal dysfunction, right ventricular failure, stroke, thromboembolism, gastrointestinal bleeding, and wound infection. Results The only preoperative significant difference between groups in the study was age; the Heartmate II group were significantly older than Heartware group. There were no differences in gender, body mass index, or body surface area. The Heartware has a better 1-year survival rate, although the difference was not significant. Patients with Heartmate II had a higher incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding and driveline infection. The Heartware group had a higher incidence of stroke and pump thrombosis. Conclusions The Heartmate II and Heartware are comparable in most respects such as survival, intraoperative features, and major complications.

Objective Vitamin D is a hormone with a variety of functions, and its deficiency and insufficiency are commonly seen both in the general population and in patients with chronic renal disease. The aim of this study was to compare vitamin D levels in patients with chronic renal disease who are on hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or no renal replacement therapy and patients who underwent renal transplantation. Methods A total of 169 patients who had not used vitamin D for ≥1 year and who had no diabetes mellitus or proteinuria were included in the study. These included: 40 patients with renal transplantation, 40 patients on hemodialysis, 49 patients on peritoneal dialysis, and 40 patients with chronic renal failure stage 1, 2, 3, or 4. 25-Hydroxy vitamin D levels were evaluated in the sera of the patients. Results 25-Hydroxy vitamin D levels in patients with renal transplantation and in predialysis patients were 12.74 ± 10.24 ng/mL and 11.16 ± 12.25 ng/mL, respectively. The levels were 7.77 ± 6.71 ng/mL and 5.96 ± 4.87 ng/mL in patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, respectively. Conclusions Vitamin D levels are lower in patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis compared with the patients with renal transplantation for a variety of reasons. In this study, objective results were obtained supporting the administration of vitamin D supplements without glomerular filtration rate measurement in all patient groups with the diagnosis of chronic renal failure in accordance with the guidelines.
