The effects of progressive relaxation exercises applied to young ski jumpers on oxidative DNA damage

    Aggön, Eser

This research aimed to investigate the status of the reactive oxygen species, antioxidants, and oxidative DNA damage in the ski jumpers subject to progressive relaxation training. Experimental design was used in this research. Data was gathered from 12 male ski jumpers. Jacobson’s PRT was applied to the athletes for 6 six weeks. Three blood samples were taken from the subjects. First, prior to the first session, second, immediately after the first session and third, immediately before the 42nd session. According to the data, both short-term and longterm ski jumping exercises led to a significant increase in the MDA and NO levels that were only in the ski jumping group. Also, short-term and long-term training increased 8-OHdG values. The Relaxation Training with the ski jumping training sessions increased the MDA, NO and 8-OHdG values in term of… The biochemical condition that may occur with the implementation of progressive relaxation training with other exercises that can be considered intensive is interpreted in this research. Also, PRT suppressed the value of 8-OHdG with ski jumping exercises.

An analysis of selected motor characteristics according to age groups in hearing-impaired individuals

Tetik, Sibel; Koç, Hürmüz; Atar, Özdemir

The aim of this study is to examine various characteristics such as agility, balance, flexibility, reaction time, movement speed of individuals with hearing impairment by age variable. A total of 51 voluntary male individuals with hearing impairment participated in the study. The age range is between 16 and 20. Variables such as height, body weight, balance, agility, reaction time and movement speed were measured. All measurements were done three times and best score was recorded. Measurement results were presented as mean and standard deviation values. One way analysis of variance was used in order to determine differences between age group and p<0.05 value was considered to be statistically significant. Study results show that there are no statistically significant difference between groups regarding balance, agility and flexibility values (p>0.05). However, regarding reaction time of hands and feet the difference between them are found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). As a result, it was observed that static balance, agility and flexibility performances of individuals with hearing impairment are not related to age while reaction time and movement speed scores values are age-related.

Physical activity levels and type 2 diabetes risk scores of university students

    Colak, Mergul

The present study is to reveal physical activity levels and type 2 diabetes risk scores of university students in accordance with gender differences and determine the relation between physical activities and type 2 diabetes scores. One thousand ninety three students studying at Erzincan University (540 female and 553 male) participated in the study. A short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and Finnish Diabetes Risk Score Questionnaire were used to determine physical activity scores and type 2 diabetes risk scores of the students. For analysis of the data, an independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance test and Pearson correlation analysis were used. Diabetes risk scores of women were found to be higher than men (p<0.01). Diabetes risk scores of men have a negative relation with all physical activity sub-categories, but for women it was found only in terms of vigor and total activity levels (p<0.01). It can be concluded that the association between diabetes risk scores and physical activity levels of male students was stronger than that of female students. Thus, increasing physical activity may reduce the diabetes risk score in university students.
