Balci, Mecdi Gurhan; Tayfur, Mahir
Background: Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy in the urothelial tract. Invasive cancer has a poor prognosis compared to non-invasive cancer, and identifying the cancer type is useful in determining the most appropriate treatment. In this study, the expression ratios of E-cadherin in non-invasive urothelial carcinoma of the bladder were investigated. The goal of the study was to predict possible invasion in the recurrence of these cases. Material and methods: Seventy-two recurrent non-invasive cases of urothelial carcinoma of the bladder were retrospectively analyzed. An immunohistochemical study of E-cadherin was performed of the baseline tissue sections. An evaluation was carried out of the intensity of membranous staining of E-cadherin and the percentage of cells that stained positive. Results: Invasive cancer was identified in the recurrence material of 14 of the 72 urothelial carcinomas of the bladder that were originally non-invasive based on the baseline samples. The rate of invasion in the recurrence material was significantly higher in cases in which the loss of E-cadherin expression was observed. Conclusion: If E-cadherin expression is negative or weak, close clinical follow-up of patients is necessary, even if the initial diagnosis is non-invasive urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. This is because the rate of invasion in these cases is higher in recurrent cases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the MTHFR gene variants (677 C→T and 1298 A→C), serum tissue metalloproteinases inhibitor (TIMP-1), thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), thymus chemokine-1 (TCK-1) levels and endometrial cancer. Sixty women were chosen from endometrial cancer patients and fifty-six women without any systemic disease were included as the control group. MTHFR C677T and A1298C MTHFR polymorphisms and their allele frequencies were evaluated with strip assay (Reverse hybridization method). Serum tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1, thymus chemokine-1, and thrombospondin-1 levels were measured with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Genotypic distribution and allelic frequencies of MTHFR C677T polymorphism were not associated with endometrial cancer (P > 0.05). But, genotypic distribution and allelic frequencies of MTHFR A1298C polymorphism were strongly associated with endometrial cancer (P = 0.047 and P = 0.024). On the other hand, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1, thrombospondin-1, and thymus chemokine-1 levels were strongly associated with endometrial cancer (P = 0.001, P = 0.02, and P = 0.001 respectively). These results indicate that genotypic distribution and allelic frequencies of MTHFR A1298C polymorphism, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1, thrombospondin-1 and thymus chemokine-1 may be the prognostic markers in endometrial carcinoma.

Ossifying fibroma of the jaw is a benign fibroosseous tumour. The growth of it is slowly and it is well circumscribed. Occurrence of multiple ossifying fibromas (synchronous) is rare in the jaw, and only a few cases have been documented. The most of these cases were in only maxilla. The fewer cases were reported in both of maxilla and mandible. We report a case of bilateral synchronous ossifying fibromas involving the mandible of a 37 years old male. The importance of our case is that bilaterality and synchronous of the lesions. Our case is the first synchronous mandibler lesion in literature reported.

Background: Recent reports indicated that incidence of thyroid carcinoma is increasing throughout the worldwide. The aim of our study was to determine a possible relationship between Forkhead box E1 (FOXE1) gene variants and histopathological features of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods: FOXE1 gene variations; rs894673, rs1867277 and rs3758249 were analyzed in 57 Papillary thyroid carcinoma patients and 51 age matched healthy control subjects. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique was used to specifically detect the variations. Results: There was a significant difference in the distribution of rs894673 genotypes in Papillary thyroid carcinoma cases (P=0.01). AA genotype presence of rs1867277 was more significantly associated with several histopathological parameters such as focal and diffuse capsular invasion, lymphatic invasion, P3 with P4 tumor grade and surgical margins. AA genotype presence in rs1867277 variation was significantly associated with the classical variant which is subtype of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Furthermore, the presence of the allel A was found to be related with lymph node invasion risk by 2.46 fold, capsular invasion risk by 2.97 fold, and pT3 with pT4 pathological stage risk by 4.13 fold and the presence of allele A in rs1867277 was significantly associated with classic variants. The presence of allele A in rs1867277 was more significantly associated with several histopathological parameters in classic variant in papillary thyroid carcinoma cases such as, the presence of the A allele was found relationship with lymph node invasion risk by 2.0 fold, capsular invasion risk by 2.39 fold, and pT3 with pT4 pathological stage risk by 3.57 fold. In addition, AATT, AAAA and GATT haplotypes (rs1867277 and rs894673) were evaluated for association with papillary thyroid carcinoma cases. Our results indicate that the significant difference according to two-allele haplotype distribution between papillary thyroid carcinoma cases and control groups. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that FOXE1 variations generate a higher risk for poor histopatological features of papillary thyroid carcinoma.

We investigated the effect of clinical features and well-known histomorphological parameters on survival of breast cancer. Material and methods: 44 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma were included in this study. We investigated the effect of age, breast cancer location (right/left), histological grade, largest diameter of the tumor, lymphovascular and perineural invasion on patient survival. IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 20 program was used for statistics. Cox proportional hazard regression model for survival analysis, log-log plot, life function graphs were used. Results were 95% confidence interval, significance (P < 0.05). Results: In univariate analysis, the left breast localization, high histological grade, large tumor size, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion has been shown that reduced the overall survival (P < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, only high histological grade, large tumor size and perineural invasion were identified as parameters negatively associated with patient survival (P < 0.05). On univariate and multivariate analysis, age was not associated with survival. Conclusion: The above results should be considered in the follow-up and treatment planning of invasive ductal carcinoma patients.
