Göktaş, Ahmet; Önen, Cihan; Huyut, Mehmet Tahir; Okutan, Şerafettin

Objective: The study aims to investigate the relationship between fear of death and healthy lifestyle behaviors in individuals undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. Materials and Methods: The sample number was determined to be 109. The study was carried out in the angiography unit and cardiology clinics of a hospital. Data were collected using the Thorson-Powell Death Anxiety and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors II Scales. Results: The patients' death anxiety scale score was 55.17±11.52 and their healthy lifestyle behavior scale score was 123.51±14.56. A negative relationship (r = -0.683, p = 0.003) was found between death anxiety and healthy lifestyle behavior scales. As death anxiety increased, healthy lifestyle behaviors decreased. A negative correlation was found between death anxiety level and physical activity (r = -0.720, p=0.002). As physical activity decreased, death anxiety level increased. Conclusions: In order for patients to experience less death anxiety, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, such as diet, exercise, spiritual development, stress management, and a healthy social life, should be known. Healthy lifestyle education programs should be applied to patients. To ensure permanence, patients should be supported with visuals and brochures, and training should be repeated.

Potential Role of Laurus nobilis Essential Oil in Reducing Indomethacin-Induced Gastric Ulcer in Rats

Karakuş, Selcan; Kurt, Nezahat; Issin, Gizem; Danışman, Ferdane; Ustundag, Hilal; Taş, Necip Gökhan

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the gastroprotective effects of Laurus nobilis leaves essential oil (LANO) against indomethacin (INDO)-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Materials and Methods: In this study, an indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer model was employed. 30 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups (n=6): Control, LANO, INDO, INDO with famotidine (FAM), and INDO with LANO. Indomethacin (25 mg/kg) induced ulcers, while LANO and FAM were administered by oral gavage at 200 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg, respectively. Gastric tissues underwent histopathological examination for ulceration, and biochemical assays measured total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI), and nitric oxide (NO) levels. Results: Compared to the INDO group, treatment with LANO significantly decreased the number of gastric ulcer foci. Biochemically, LANO moderated TOS and OSI levels and preserved TAS, indicating reduced oxidative stress. Additionally, LANO appeared to stabilize NO levels. These biochemical findings were corroborated by histopathological examination. Conclusions: The study's results indicate that LANO may be beneficial in protecting against NSAID-induced gastric damage. LANO's observed modulation of oxidative stress markers and NO levels suggests its potential role in managing gastric ulcers.

Cytotoxic Effects of Cisplatin and Carboplatin Loaded Albumin Nanoparticles on Breast Cancer Cells

    Danışman, Ferdane; Kariper, İshak Afşin

Objective: This study aims to investigate and compare the anticancer effects of carboplatin and cisplatin, frequently used in cancer treatment, by loading them on albumin nanocarrier. Materials and Methods: Carboplatin (CP) and Cisplatin (Cis) loaded albumin nanoparticles were synthesized using ultrasonication as CP-NPs and Cis-NPs, respectively. Nanoparticle size and distribution were evaluated by Dynamic light scattering (DLS). Cytotoxicities of NPs were evaluated in MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells and HUVEC using MTT test and their morphological images were compared. Results: While the average size of CP-NPs was around 2-3 nm, Cis-NPs was 7-8 nm. It was observed that both NPs groups were homogeneously dispersed. According to the cytotoxicity results, both CP-NPs and Cis-NPs were more cytotoxic on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. In addition, CP-NPs and Cis-NPs showed significant cytotoxicity on MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, while low cytotoxicity was detected in normal HUVEC cells. The NPs treated MCF-7 was compared with the untreated MCF-7 and statistical significance was calculated as P<0.01 for CP-NPs and Cis-NPs. Conclusions: Abumin-based CP-NPs and Cis-NPs showed high cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells, they have low cytotoxicity in healthy cells, making them promising for breast cancer treatment.

Arslan, Yusuf Kemal; Astepe, Bahar Sarıibrahim; Kiremitli, Tunay; Ulug, Pasa; Uzel, Kemine; Bilir, Filiz

Evaluation of Pathogens Isolated from Central Venous Catheters Used for Cardiovascular Interventions

Korkmaz, Ufuk Turan Kursat; Gülhan, Barış

Objective: To evaluate the isolated pathogens in patients who underwent central venous catheterization due to cardiovascular procedures. Materials and Methods: Patients were monitored daily for the development of catheter related infections. Between April 2017 and July 2019, patients who exhibited infection symptoms like discharge, fever, pain, lymphadenopathy and itching after the catheterization were included in this retrospective study. Patients’ catheter types, catheter insertion sites, total catheterization durations, culture results, sensitivities and resistances of pathogens against antimicrobial drugs were recorded and analyzed. Results: Eighty-six patients who underwent central venous catheterization due to various indications were included. Mean age of patients was 52.70±17.82 years. Bacterial growth was found in 62.79% of patients. The most common catheter insertion sites were right subclavian vein, right jugular vein and right femoral vein. The most commonly isolated microorganism was S. aureus by 25.58% followed by E.coli (6.98%), S. haemolyticus (5.81%) and K.pneumonia (5.81%). S. aureus was detected to be sensitive to vancomycin and linezolid. Conclusion: Factors affecting incidence of these infections include catheter insertion site, catheterization duration, catheter selection and skills of the practitioners. Data in literature about the pathogens isolated in catheter-related infections and their sensitivity and resistance to antimicrobial agents are mostly old. Further comprehensive, multicenter studies are needed on this issue.
