Because the Edremit Basin is situated at a complex junction of strike-slip and extensional tectonics, its seismic hazard is governed by the interactions among the Yenice–Gönen, the Edremit, and Havran–Balya fault zones (HBFZ), which generated the major 1944 (Mw 6.8) and 1953 (Ms 7.4) earthquakes. This study refines seismic hazard assessment of the region and identifies a transtensional regime characterized by dominant normal faulting along the northern margin. It identifies right-lateral strike-slip motion along the southern margin, integrating updated structural mapping, paleostress data, and high-resolution near-surface geophysical data. Empirical scaling suggests the westward continuation of the HBFZ could host events up to about Mw 7.2 earthquake. Data from 504 HVSR measurement sites and 181 MASW and ReMi surface-wave profiles provide estimates of the site period, amplification factor, seismic vulnerability index, shallow and 3D Vs structure, and shear-strain estimate for multiple PGA scenarios. Coastal and deeper basin areas show low Vs30 (≤250 m/s), longer site periods, and high amplification factors, while higher topographic elevations rest on engineering bedrock (Vs >760 m/s). Zones with Kg >20 particularly Çoruh, Çıkrıkçı, Havran could undergo plastic deformation at 0.25 g, with deformation spreading across much of the basin at 0.50–0.75 g. Most sites are classified as ZC–ZD soil classes, with localized ZE soft-soil zones according to the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC), highlighting strong spatial variability in site effects and emphasizing the need for micro-zonation and site-specific response analyses to support resilient against potential Mw ≥7 earthquakes.

On February 6, 2023, two devastating earthquakes (Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.6) struck southeastern Türkiye, two of the most destructive seismic events in the country's history. This study investigates the structural damage and seismic vulnerability in the Gölbaşı Basin, located in Adıyaman Province—one of the regions most severely affected by these events. Geophysical techniques, the HVSR (Nakamura) and spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) methods, were employed to develop shear wave velocity (Vs) profiles and evaluate the dynamic soil properties of the basin. Shear wave velocities within the Gölbaşı Basin, down to a depth of 300 m, range from 211 to 923 m/s, with the lowest values observed near the lake, indicating weak and loose soil conditions. Natural site periods vary between 0.1 s and 2.86 s, with the longest periods (T > 2.5 s) also concentrated in the vicinity of the lake. In areas where the engineering bedrock (Vs > 760 m/s) lies deeper than 250 m, natural periods frequently exceed 1.5 s. These findings suggest that zones with thick alluvial deposits and low Vs values are particularly susceptible to seismic hazards. Structural damage was most severe in areas where Vs is below 350 m/s, site periods exceed 1 s, and the engineering bedrock lies deeper than 50 m. Notably, low-rise industrial buildings and low-rise structures with basement floors remained intact despite poor soil conditions. In contrast, in areas with more competent ground conditions, structural collapses were more likely caused by deficiencies in engineering design or construction quality.

Akin, O.; Sayil, N.; Pamuk, E.; Coban, K.H.
The topographic structure, land slope, rainfall amount, and proximity to the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) and offshore faults (Trabzon, Ordu, and Rize Faults) in the Eastern Black Sea Region contribute to the frequent occurrence of landslides in this area. The Black Sea Region has the highest number of landslide-related casualties in Türkiye. In this study, an area with both paleo and active landslides, located 10 km from the city center of Trabzon, was selected as the study area. The use of the Ground Shear Strain (GSS) parameter in landslide-prone areas is demonstrated. During the study, the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) and Standard Spectral Ratio (SSR) methods were applied to calculate the ground predominant period and soil amplification. The Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) and Rayleigh Wave Ellipticity (RWE) methods were used to determine shear wave velocity. The results indicate that in landslide-prone areas with low shear wave velocity, the ground predominant period can increase up to 1.3 seconds, and the GSS value can rise to 0.5. The clear increase in GSS values in landslide-prone areas shows the reliability of this parameter in landslide investigation.

The Biga Peninsula has hot springs with geothermal temperatures varying between 40oC and 175oC. In this study, we investigate the regional temperature distribution and change in radiogenic heat production in the Biga Peninsula. We use EMAG2 magnetic data to estimate the Curie point depth (CPD). Our findings show that the CPD in the region varies between 9 km and 17 km. We also calculated the geothermal gradient and heat flow values based on the CPD data. which range between 92.9 and 141.6 mWm-2. Additionally, we also obtained values for zo, zt, and zb from the power spectrum and calculated 1D geothermal gradient change for examined blocks. The resulting equations are: zt = z80°C, zo = z350°C, and zb = z580°C. These equations enabled us to propose a new formula to calculate the CPD. We also obtained the Conrad discontinuity depth (zc = z680°C) in the Biga Peninsula. Furthermore, we prepared 2D heat flow and temperature profiles along three sections to investigate the relationship between heat changes and earthquake focal distributions. The results indicate that seismicity is high in the southwest of the Biga Peninsula, which has a high CPD, high heat flow value, and shallow Conrad discontinuity.

This study presents preliminary results from a multidisciplinary geophysical investigation conducted in the Edremit Basin (Balıkesir), Northwestern Türkiye, as part of TÜBİTAK Project No. 123Y151. The region has experienced significant seismic events, including the 1944 Edremit Gulf (Ms=6.8) and the 1953 Yenice-Gönen (Ms=7.2) earthquakes. To assess seismic hazard and dynamic soil behavior, various methods were employed, including MASW, ReMi, seismic P-wave refraction, SPAC, microgravity, and single-station microtremor measurements. These techniques aim to determine the subsurface structure and the soil-bedrock interface in 1D, 2D, and 3D. The study area was divided into sub-regions such as Edremit, Havran, Burhaniye for detailed investigation. In the initial phase, microtremor, seismic, and microgravity data were collected and analysed across the basin to understand the soil conditions on a regional scale. In this step, data processing included H/V spectral ratio analysis (Nakamura Method), dispersion curve inversion, and P- and S-velocities-depth profiling. We performed an integration of active and passive surface wave methods allowed for improved resolution of shear wave velocities. In addition, geological data, such as digital elevation models and orthophotos, were used to characterize structural features and fault zones. These preliminary results lay the groundwork for ongoing site-specific seismic hazard assessments in the Edremit Basin.

The Main Marmara Fault (MMF), the westernmost segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), constitutes a prominent seismic gap beneath the Sea of Marmara, Türkiye. On 23 April 2025, a moderate earthquake of Mw 6.3 occurred offshore Silivri-Kumburgaz, at the transitional zone between the creeping Central Basin and the locked Kumburgaz segment. The present work provides a comprehensive investigation of the source properties, rupture complexity, and seismotectonic context of the 23 April 2025 Mw 6.3 Silivri High-Kumburgaz Basin earthquake and the subsequent aftershock activity. A combination of the advanced centroid moment tensor (CMT), finite-fault slip inversions, and precise relocations of the aftershock enabled to primarily resolve source and rupture properties, and to evaluate the co- and post-seismic deformation associated to the mainshock along the MMF. Moment tensor inversions performed on local, regional, and/or teleseismic data consistently indicate a dominantly right-lateral strike-slip rupture with a slight normal component. The spatiotemporal evolution of rupture kinematics, as inferred from the finite fault inversions suggests a bilateral co-seismic displacement for the 2025 earthquake that terminated toward the west, where a documented aseismic creep regime presumably reduces a substantial amount of stress. The observed post-seismic deformation, as identified by precise relocations of the aftershock sequence, indicates a distinct eastward propagation within the initial 24 h, extending up to approximately 20 km east from the epicenter of the mainshock. We observe that the mainshock nucleates within a low–high Vs transition zone between the partially creeping Central Basin and the locked Kumburgaz segment of the MMF. This implies the moderate mechanical strength of rocks can enable these transition zones as ideal spots where large crustal earthquakes nucleate. Our study favors an elevated probability of a future, large earthquake (M7 +), which could potentially pose a significant threat to the mega-city of Istanbul as the recent Mw 6.3 mainshock may have led to an increased stress on the locked part of the segment remained quiescent since 1766.

The change in duration, amplitude, and frequency content of the earthquake ground motion as it passes through the rock and ground environment is referred to as the local ground effect. Impedance differences between bedrock and soil, as well as the dynamic behavior of soils, can amplify this effect. The geometry of both dense and loose soil layers must be known to accurately define soil–structure interaction and properly assess how soil behavior affects a structure during an earthquake. Local ground effects are known to play a significant role in structural damage during earthquakes. In basin-like environments, however, studies based on foundation and sub-base depth often lack sufficient information, making it difficult to identify problems associated with basin effects. It is not appropriate to provide construction-related information, especially in environments with a basin structure like Sivas, without determining the bedrock or solid ground conditions. This study aimed at determining the bedrock/seismic foundation depth for the central settlement of Sivas and defining the basin structure, involved large-scale microgravity measurements. The study area was modeled in three dimensions using the gravity data obtained. Long-term microtremor measurements were also conducted, and one-dimensional depth–shear-wave (Vs) velocity models were generated using the Rayleigh ellipticity method. The bedrock/seismic foundation structure of the study area was defined using two different methods, and these definitions were combined into two-dimensional sections. A depth map of the study area was created, revealing that the thickness of the loose basin unit is approximately 90 m. Ambient noise was recorded at 35 points with a velocity seismometer, and S velocity (Vs) profiles were obtained from joint inversion of Rayleigh ellipticity data and dispersion curves from MASW and ReMi data. Furthermore, the Vs-depth structure of the basin was defined along the profiles cutting the basin in NW–SE and S–N directions, based on the Vs velocities in the 2D gravity model. The frequency range along these profiles was found to be 0.6 Hz in the deep parts of the basin and 2.5 Hz in the shallow parts.
