Yavuz, Arzu; Uzel, Kemine; Sezgin, Esra Tuba; Kuzucu, Mehmet; Yılmaz, Nesrin; Yazici, Gülcenaz; Hendem, Engin; Süleyman, Halis

    (1) Background: Erlotinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) widely used in cancer therapy; however, its potential adverse effects on ovarian tissue have not been fully elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate erlotinib-induced ovarian injury and to evaluate the protective effects of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and flunarizine, administered alone or in combination, using biochemical and histopathological analyses in a rat model. (2) Methods: Thirty female rats were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 6 per group): healthy control, erlotinib, ATP + erlotinib, flunarizine + erlotinib, and ATP + flunarizine + erlotinib. ATP (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) and flunarizine (5 mg/kg, oral gavage) were administered daily for two weeks, while erlotinib (5 mg/kg) was given orally every two days for two weeks. Ovarian tissues were collected for oxidative stress analysis and histopathological evaluation, and blood samples were obtained for the measurement of serum prolactin and AMH levels. (3) Results: Erlotinib administration resulted in significant oxidative stress and histopathological alterations in ovarian tissue, accompanied by a reduction in serum AMH levels, while prolactin levels remained unchanged. Treatment with ATP or flunarizine partially attenuated these alterations. (4) Conclusions: Combined ATP and flunarizine administration showed stronger protective effects, improving biochemical parameters and preserving ovarian histology, suggesting a protective role against erlotinib-induced ovarian injury.

Flunarizine attenuates ischemia–reperfusion–induced ovarian injury in rats

Yavuz, Arzu; Uzel, Kemine; Sezgin, Esra Tuba; Paltacı, Şeyma İlayda; Demir, Özlem; Kuzucu, Mehmet; Süleyman, Halis

Background: Ovarian ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury is associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and histopathological damage. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective effects of flunarizine against ovarian I/R–induced injury in an experimental rat model. Methods: Rats were divided into four groups: healthy control (HG), sham-operated (SOG), ovarian ischemia–reperfusion (OIR), and flunarizine-treated OIR (FOIR). Ovarian tissues were analyzed in terms of oxidative stress markers, antioxidant enzyme activities, inflammatory cytokines, and histopathological alterations, including follicle counting. Results: Ovarian I/R significantly increased tissue levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) while significantly decreasing total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) levels. Histopathological evaluation revealed severe follicular degeneration, interstitial edema, vascular congestion, and inflammatory cell infiltration in the OIR group. Following flunarizine administration, these biochemical and histopathological alterations were significantly ameliorated, and a partial restoration in follicle counts was observed. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that flunarizine exerts protective effects against ovarian I/R injury by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and histopathological damage.

The Relationship Between Tramadol-Induced Oxidative Testis Injury and Reproductive Function Disorder and Adenosine Triphosphate

Bedir, Fevzi; Kocatürk, Hüseyin; Altay, Mehmet Sefa; Mammadov, Renad; Süleyman, Bahadır; Coban, Taha Abdulkadir; Yazici, Gülce Naz; Bulut, Seval; Süleyman, Halis

Tramadol, a central analgesic drug, is used to treat moderate to severe pain but can cause reproductive disorders. The pathogenesis of tramadol-induced reproductive damage may involve increased oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokines, ATP depletion, and reduced antioxidant levels. In this study, subjects were divided into four groups: healthy control (HC), tramadol only (TM), ATP only (ATP), and ATP + tramadol (ATM). ATP was administered intraperitoneally at 4 mg/kg, and tramadol was administered orally at 50 mg/kg. Distilled water was given to the HC group. This regimen was repeated for three weeks. At the end of the treatment, testicular tissues from six rats in each group were analyzed biochemically and histopathologically after euthanasia. The remaining rats’ reproductive functions were evaluated. Long-term tramadol exposure resulted in oxidative stress, inflammation in testicular tissue, and reduced male reproductive capacity. Thinning of seminiferous tubule walls and thickening of basement membrane, irregularity in germ cells, increase in interstitial connective tissue, congestion in vessels, increase in Leyding cells and hyperplasia were found in the TM group. ATP treatment significantly reduced tramadol-induced increases in oxidants and pro-inflammatory cytokines, reversed the decline in antioxidants, and mitigated infertility in testicular tissue. Furthermore, ATP preserved the morphology of the testicular tissue. These findings suggest that ATP may offer therapeutic potential for tramadol-induced infertility.

Revealing the protective potential of D-(-)-Quinic acid against thioacetamide-induced hepatic encephalopathy in rats

Ciftel, Sedat; Cicek, Betul; Bolat, Ismail; Bulut, Seval; Yildirim, Serkan; Suleyman, Bahadir; Qaniyev, Musa; Süleyman, Halis

The objective of this study was to elucidate the impact of D-(-)-Quinic acid (D-(-)-QA), a natural phenolic acid, on the molecular mechanisms of inflammation and oxidative stress in brain and liver damage in thioacetamide (TAA)-induced hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in rats. To establish an experimental HE model, rats were injected with three doses (200 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) of TAA every other day, followed by the administration of D-(-)- QA (200 or 400 mg/kg, orally) for fourteen days. Serum ammonia, alanine transaminase (ALT), and aspartate transaminase (AST) levels were detected. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta IL-1β, and malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH) levels were analyzed to assess inflammation and oxidative damage in brain and liver tissues. Histopathological examinations, immunofluorescence (PI3K and AKT expressions), and immunohistochemical (HSP70 expression) examinations were also performed. TAA administration causedhyperammonemia and increased ALT and AST levels, along with histopathological changes indicating damage to hepatocytes and neurons. Additionally, it disrupted the inflammatory response and promoted oxidative damage by activating the PI3K/AKT-related HSP70 response in the brain and liver. Treatment with D-(-)-QA significantly prevented the increase in ammonia levels and improved the liver function. In addition, the increase in TNF-α, and IL-1β, proinflammatory cytokines in liver and brain tissues as well as the increase in MDA and decrease in SOD and GSH were significantly suppressed by D-(-)-QA. By suppressing HSP70 and PI3K/AKT signaling in brain and liver tissues, D-(-)-QA administration attenuated inflammation and oxidative damage. D-(-)-QA may be an alternative to current clinical interventions by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative damage signaling toward the pathogenesis of HE.

Purpose: Favipiravir (FAV) used against COVID-19 is an antiviral drug that causes adverse reactions, such as hyperuricaemia, liver damage, and hematopoetic toxicity. The aim of the study was to investigate the systemic and ocular side-effects of FAV in rats, for the first time.Materials and methods: A total of 18 albino male Wistar rats were used in the study. The rats were divided into 3 groups as the healthy group (HG), the group given 50 mg/kg/day favipiravir (FAV50), and the group given 200 mg/kg/d favipiravir (FAV200). These doses were given to the experimental groups for one week. At the end of the experiment histopathological examinations were performed on the conjunctiva and sclera of the eye. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured in blood samples taken from rats. Results: Compared to HG, the MDA (1.37 ± 0.61 vs. 4.82 ± 1.40 µmol/mL), IL-1β (2.52 ± 1.14 vs. 6.67 ± 1.99 pg/mL), and TNF-α levels (3.28 ± 1.42 vs. 8.53 ± 3.06 pg/mL) of the FAV200 group were higher. The levels of tGSH (7.58 ± 1.98 vs. 2.50 ± 0.98 nmol/mL) and SOD (13.63 ± 3.43 vs. 3.81 ± 1.43 U/mL) the FAV200 group were lower than the HG (p < 0.05, for all). The degree of damage to the cornea and sclera of the FAV200 group was quite high according to HG (p < 0.001). Conclusions: FAV can cause damage to rat conjunctiva and sclera by increasing oxidant stress and inflammation at high dose.

Ölmeztürk Karakurt, Tülay Ceren; Emir, İzzet; Bedir, Zehra; Ozkaloglu Erdem, Kezban Tuna; Süleyman, Halis; Sarıgül, Cengiz; Mendil, Ali Sefa

Aim: We aimed to investigate the preventive effects of carvacrol against ketamine-induced cardiotoxicity biochemically and histopathologically in an experimental model. Material and method: The rats were divided into three groups; healthy control (HC), ketamine alone (KG), and ketamine + carvacrol (KCG) groups. Serum Creatine Kinase Myocardial Band (CK-MB) and Troponin I (TP I) levels were determined. Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione (GSH), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Tumor Necrosis Factor α (TNF-α), Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1beta), and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were measured in the heart tissues of the rats. Heart tissues were also evaluated histopathologically. Results: In the ketamine-treated group, tissue MDA, TNF-α, IL-1beta, and IL-6 levels increased while tissue GSH and SOD levels decreased significantly compared with the control group. However, in the ketamine plus carvacrol applied group, all those alterations were significantly less pronounced, close to the healthy controls. Severe mononuclear cell infiltrations, degenerated myocytes and hemorrhage were determined in the ketamine alone administered group, and these alterations were at a mild level in the carvacrol + ketamine administered group. Conclusion: Prolonged exposure to ketamine resulted in induced oxidative stress in rat heart tissue; concomitant carvacrol application could counteract the negative effects of ketamine by protecting tissues from lipid peroxidation and decreasing the inflammatory response.

Ölmeztürk Karakurt, Tülay Ceren; Eren, Nurhan; Subaşı, Faruk; Kuyrukluyıldız, Ufuk; Çoban, Taha Abdulkadir; Süleyman, Halis; Mokhtare, Behzad

In this experimental study we aimed to investigate the biochemical and histopathological effects of concomitantly administered taxifolin on tramadol-induced liver damage in rats. The rats were divided into three groups; control group (CG), tramadol alone (TRG), and taxifolin + tramadol given (TTRG) groups. Malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), nuclear factor-kappa beta (NF-kB), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels were measured in liver tissues. Liver tissues were also examined histopathologically. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were determined in blood samples. In tissue analyses, determinants of oxidative stress and inflammation, all were significantly higher in the TRG group compared with the control and TTRG groups. In the TTRG group, all oxidative stress and inflammation markers were significantly lower than in the TRG group. In addition, there was not any significant difference between the control and TTRG groups regarding the TOS and TAS status. Serum liver enzymes were also significantly higher in the TRG group than in the other two groups. In histopathological examinations, the control group had a normal histological appearance. Degenerative-necrotic hepatocytes and hemorrhage, which were seen at a severe level in the TRG group, were found to be moderate in the treated TTRG group. In addition, mononuclear cell infiltrations were found to be severe in the TRG group and mild in the treated TTRG group. Finally it was concluded that Taxifolin alleviated the toxic effects of tramadol on the liver including the histopathological and biochemical changes as well as the oxidative damage.

    Akbas, Nergis; Süleyman, Halis

Background and Objective: 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the second most common cardiotoxic chemotherapeutic drug. Inflammation and oxidative stress are implicated in the pathogenesis of 5- FU-induced cardiotoxicity. This study evaluated the effectiveness of lacidipine and carvacrol, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, against 5-FU-induced cardiotoxicity. Materials and Methods: Rats were divided into a control group (HC) and groups receiving 5-FU (FU), 5-FU+lacidipine (LFU), 5-FU+carvacrol (CFU), or 5-FU+lacidipine+carvacrol (LCFU). Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) from heart tissue and Creatine Kinase MB (CK-MB) and troponin I (TP-I) from plasma were evaluated. Results: The SOD and CAT activities and GSH levels were significantly lower in the FU group than HC, LFU, CFU and LCFU groups (p<0.001). The MDA, IL-6, TP-I and CK-MB levels were significantly higher in the FU group than HC, LFU, CFU and LCFU groups (p<0.001). Differences between HC and LCFU groups were detected only in terms of GSH (p = 0.09). Conclusion: The lacidipine and carvacrol are effective against 5-FU-induced cardiotoxicity, but a combination is more effective.

Effect of felodipine on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in rats

Akbaş, Nergis; Süleyman, Bahadır; Mammadov, Renad; Gülaboğlu, Mine; Akbaş, Emin Murat; Süleyman, Halis

Felodipine is a calcium channel blocker with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers have stated that oxidative stress and inflammation also play a role in the pathophysiology of gastric ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the antiulcer effect of felodipine on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in Wistar rats and compare it with that of famotidine. The antiulcer activities of felodipine (5 mg/kg) and famotidine were investigated biochemically and macroscopically in animals treated with felodipine (5 mg/kg) and famotidine in combination with indomethacin. The results were compared with those of the healthy control group and the group administered indomethacin alone. It was observed that felodipine suppressed the indomethacin-induced malondialdehyde increase (P<0.001); reduced the decrease in total glutathione amount (P<0.001), reduced the decrease superoxide dismutase (P<0.001), and catalase activities (P<0.001); and significantly inhibited ulcers (P<0.001) at the tested dose compared with indomethacin alone. Felodipine at a dose of 5 mg/kg reduced the indomethacin-induced decrease in cyclooxygenase-1 activity (P<0.001) but did not cause a significant reduction in the decrease in cyclooxygenase-2 activity. The antiulcer efficacy of felodipine was demonstrated in this experimental model. These data suggest that felodipine may be useful in the treatment of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced gastric injury.

Toxic doses of paracetamol are also known to be close to therapeutic doses. This study aimed to biochemically investigate the protective effect of ATP against paracetamol-induced oxida-tive liver injury in rats and to examine the tissues histopathologically. We divided the animals into the paracetamol alone (PCT), ATP + paracetamol (PATP), and healthy control (HG) groups. Liver tissues were examined biochemically and histopathologically. Malondialdehyde level, AST and ALT activity in the PCT group were significantly higher than those in the HG and PATP groups (p < 0.001). The glutathione (tGSH) level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity in the PCT group was significantly lower than that in the HG and PATP groups (p < 0.001), while animal SOD activity was significantly different between the PATP and HG groups (p < 0.001). The activity of CAT was almost the same. In the group treated with paracetamol alone, lipid deposition, necrosis, fibrosis, and grade 3 hydropic degeneration were observed. No histopathological damage was observed of the ATP-treated group, except for grade 2 edema. We discovered that ATP reduces the oxidative stress caused by paracetamol ingestion and protects against paracetamol-induced liver injury at the macroscopic and histological levels.

Effect of adenosine triphosphate on ribociclib-induced skin toxicity in rats

Akbaş, Nergis; Akbaş, Emin Murat; Süleyman, Zeynep; Çiçek, Betül; Ağgül, Ahmet Gökhan; Mokhtare, Behzad; Süleyman, Halis

Purpose: Ribociclib is a CDK4/6 inhibitor approved for the treatment of breast cancer; it inhibits the activity of CDK4/6 by competitively binding to adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) binding sites. Although generally well-tolerated, ribociclib has been connected to a number of serious dermatologic complications. This study explored the effects of ATP on ribociclib-induced skin damage. Materials and methods: Using a rat model, ATP 25 mg/kg was injected intraperitoneally in the ATP + Ribociclib (ATR) group (n = 6). Distilled water as solvent was applied to the healthy control (HC) group (n = 6) and ribociclib (RCB) group (n = 6). One hour after ATP and solvent administration, ribociclib (200 mg/kg) suspension prepared in distilled water was administered to the stomach by gavage (ATR and RCB groups). This was repeated once a day for 15 d. After that period, biochemical markers were studied in the skin tissues and histopathological evaluations were conducted. Results: In the histopathological evaluation of the RCB group, dermal necrosis, degeneration in hair follicles, and pycnosis in keratinocytes were observed. Only mild degeneration was observed in the ATR group; the HC group had a normal histological appearance. The malondialdehyde (MDA) values were significantly higher and the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and total glutathione (tGSH) levels were significantly lower in the RCB group in comparison to the HC group (p <.001). ATP reduced the ribociclib-induced increases in the MDA values and decreased the SOD, CAT, and tGSH levels in the ATR group (p <.001). Conclusion: ATP may be useful in the treatment of ribociclib-induced skin damage.

The effects of sugammadex on gastric ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats: Biochemical and histopathological evaluation

Koç, Alparslan; Kuyrukluyildiz, Ufuk; Gazi, Mustafa; Sayar, Ali Caner; Altuner, Durdu; Süleyman, Halis; Yavuzer, Bülent; Çoban, Taha Abdulkadir; Süleyman, Zeynep; Yazici, Gülce Naz

The primary sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injuries are enzymes xanthine oxidase (XO) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidases (NOXs) in the literature, whereby one of the main ROS producing cells via NOX activity are polymophonuclear leukocytes (PNL). Sugammadex, the effect of which we plan to research against gastric I/R damage, is a modified gamma-cyclodextrin that antagonizes the action of steroidal neuromuscular blocking drugs. Previous studies have reported that sugammadex inhibits PNL infiltration. However, it is unknown whether an inhibitory effect on XO is present. We aimed to biochemically and histopathologically investigate the effects of sugammadex on I/R-induced stomach damage in rats. The animals were divided into groups that underwent gastric ischemia-reperfusion (GIR), 4 mg/kg sugammadex + gastric ischemia-reperfusion (SGIR), and a sham operation group (SG). The effect of sugammadex was evaluated by measuring oxidant-antioxidant and PNL parameters. There was no significant difference in XO levels between the SGIR and GIR groups. In the SGIR group, sugammadex inhibited the increase in myeloperoxidase (MPO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (p < 0.001). The amount of MDA and MPO in the SGIR group was similar as in the SG group. Sugammadex significantly suppressed the decrease in tGSH levels in the SGIR group (p < 0.001). The difference between tGSH levels in the SG and SGIR groups was slight. In the SGIR group, sugammadex significantly suppressed the increase in tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 1 beta (IL1-β) levels compared to the GIR group (p < 0.001). Additionally, sugammadex corrected histopathological modifications as much as sham group. In conclusion, sugammadex may be beneficial in preventing oxidative stress.

Elma, Bekir; Mammadov, Renad; Süleyman, Halis; Gündoğdu, Betül; Yurt, Şerif; Bilgin, Yasin; Çoban, Abdulkadir

BACKGROUND: Acute cardiac contusion induced by trauma is known with its high mortality and morbidity. The role of oxidative stress and inflammation in its pathophysiology has led to the investigation of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substances in non-surgical treatment. In this study, the effects of rutin which has these two features on acute cardiac contusion were investigated. METHODS: Thirty male albino Wistar rats were divided into three equal groups as healthy (HG), contusion (CG), and rutin + contusion (rutin + CG). A heart contusion was created dropping 200 g weight from 1-m height onto anterior thorax of CG (n=10) and Rutin + CG (n=10) group animals by anesthetizing with intraperitoneal administration of 60 mg/kg ketamine and xylazine inhalation at appropriate intervals. Thirty minutes after contusion was applied, rutin at the dose of 50 mg/kg was administered orally to the stomach by gavage to the rutin + CG group animals. The rutin was used once a day for 2 days. Rats were killed at the end of 48 h. Heart tissues were removed and examined biochemically and histopathologically. Troponin I (TP I) and creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) were measured in blood samples taken from the tail veins just before the rats were killed. RESULTS: TP I, CK-MB, malondialdehyde, total oxidant status, and nuclear factor-kappa B levels increased in the CG when compared to the HG, and Rutin application prevented this increase, total glutathione (eGSH) and total antioxidant status levels decreased, and rutin application prevented this decrease. Histopathological findings also supported these findings. CONCLUSION: Rutin had a protective effect on heart tissue.

Long-term treatment with tramadol is reported to be toxic to the kidneys. Research shows that tramadol reduces antioxidants and increases oxidants produced in renal tissue. We aimed to investigate the carvacrol effect on tramadol-induced renal injury in rats. The animals were divided into four groups: healthy (HG), individual tramadol (TR), individual carvacrol (CR), and tramadol + carvacrol (TC). Malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine (Cr) were measured. Renal tissue was examined histopathologically. MDA, TOS, BUN, and Cr were significantly elevated in group TR and identified as low in group TC compared to group TR but higher than in the HG group. The tGSH, SOD, GPO, and TAS levels were low in group TR and higher in group TC than in group TR but lower than in the HG group. Histological examination of the TR group revealed diffuse necrosis and focal polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) in the tubules. In the TC group, tubular atrophy and necrosis were minimal, and PMNL was rare. We observed that tramadol increases oxidants, decreases antioxidants, increases BUN and Cr, and examined whether the toxic effect on renal tissue regressed with carvacrol.

The role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of cyclophosphamide-related side effects has been demonstrated in previous studies. This study aimed to investigate the effect of taxifolin, due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, on cyclophosphamide-induced oxidative and inflammatory bladder injury in albino Wistar rats. The taxifolin+cyclophosphamide (TCYC) group was given 50 mg/kg of taxifolin orally by gavage. Normal saline was used as a solvent for the cyclophosphamide (CYC) group and the healthy control (HC) group. One hour after taxifolin administration, 75 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide was intraperitoneally injected in the TCYC and CYC groups. This procedure was repeated once a day for 30 days. At the end of this period, biochemical markers were studied in the excised bladder tissues and histopathological evaluations were conducted. In the histopathological evaluation of the CYC group, severe epithelial irregularity, dilatation, congestion, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte accumulation in the vascular structures were observed. Additionally, the malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, the total oxidant status (TOS), and the oxidative stress index (OSI) values were significantly higher, and the total glutathione (tGSH) levels and total antioxidant status (TAS) were significantly lower in the CYC group in comparison to the HC group (P<0.001). Taxifolin reduced the cyclophosphamide-induced increases in the MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 levels and the TOS and OSI values; it decreased the tGSH and TAS levels and reduced histopathological damage (P<0.001). Taxifolin may be useful in the treatment of cyclophosphamide-induced bladder damage.

Favipiravir is a drug which shows antiviral activity by inhibiting RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Favipiravir causes severe adverse effects at high doses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of low and high dose favipiravir on ovarian and reproductive function in female rats. The rats were divided into three groups: HG group (healthy rats), FAV-100 group (rats administered 100 mg/kg favipiravir), and FAV-400 group (rats administered 400 mg/kg favipiravir) with 12 rats in each group. Favipiravir was administered orally twice daily for 1 week. Six rats from each group were euthanized and their ovaries were removed. Oxidative and antioxidant parameters were measured in ovarian tissues and examined histopathologically. The remaining animals were kept to breed. Animals receiving favipiravir had increased oxidant content, decreased antioxidant activity, decreased histopathological damage, infertility, and gestational delay. Favipiravir treatment should be used with caution, especially in women of reproductive age.

Lutein has an anti-inflammatory impact on tissues, according to recent research. The goal of our research was to see how lutein affected the biochemical and histological results of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) intervention on rats' livers. A total of 18 rats were divided into a sham operation group (HG), a liver I/R (KIR) group, or lutein (1mg/kg)+liver I/R (LIR) groups. Biochemical measures and histological exams were done in all three groups after I/R intervention. MDA, NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1, ALT, and AST levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in the KIR group compared to the HG and LIR groups, although tGSH was significantly lower (p < 0.001). The HG group was histopathologically normal. The KIR group had severe degeneration, necrosis, and inflammation in the portal area and parenchyma. The LIR group had mild inflammation in the portal area and parenchyma. The use of lutein might be an alternative treatment for liver damage caused by I/R responses during surgery.

Objective: Benidipine is an antihypertansive agent which elicits vasodilatation of arteries by blocking Ca2+. The aim of this study is to investigate the neuroprotective effects of benidipine on rat sciatic nerves exposed to ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Method: 30 male Wistar Albino rats were used in this study. The rats were divided into three groups(n=10 per group). I/R procedure was administered to the IR group, 10 mu g/kg/day, i.v. benidipine was given for 2 hours (h) to the BIR group before I/R procedure. And a sham group (SG) was created. Next, histopathological and biochemical investigations were performed on sciatic nerve tissues. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) were analyzed as oxidative stress markers; interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) were analyzed as inflammatory stress markers in biochemical tests. Results: Axonal swelling, myelin loss and disorganisation were seen in the IR group. Schwann cells showed hypertrophy, hyperplasia, blood vessels were seen as congested. But these results were under normal values and almost similiar between BIR and SG groups. In the BIR group ischemic fibere degeneration score was significiantly lower than IR group. And MDA, TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta values higher, GSH and SOD values were lower in the IR group, but in the BIR group all these values were kept within normal limits. Conclusion: This study showed that benidipine reduced oxidative stress and inflammation in rat sciatic nerve after I/R injury.
