A new cave-dwelling Laemostenus (Pristonychus) species from central Anatolia (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Sphodrini)

Özet

Laemostenus (Pristonychus) violeta Fidan & Elverici, sp. nov., from T & uuml;rkiye is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the terricola species group of the subgenus Pristonychus. It is readily distinguished from congeners by the unique structure of the aedeagus (slender median lobe and distinct apical shape) and the vivid violaceous sheen of the elytra. The species was found in extremely high abundance in the guano-rich dark zone of Singildakli in (Hamambogazi) Cave, Central Anatolia, and was absent from a nearby guano-free cave. Its ecology indicates a guanophilic and troglophilic lifestyle, and it is currently known only from the type locality, suggesting a localized cave endemicity within the group.

The findings reported in this study are direct outputs of the state-funded project Research Project for Some Caves in the Western and Eastern Black Sea Regions and Central Anatolia Region funded by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Republic of Turkiye. We extend our gratitude to our caver colleagues who facilitated access to the caves for sampling, including members of the Turkish Caving Federation: Bar & imath;l Kaymaz, Hilmi Umut Demiriz, Burak, and Murat Gezer. Special thanks go to Gokhan Eren Cankaya, Ertugrul Kulaks & imath;zoglu (Kalif Consulting, Reporting, and Organization Company), and Mustafa Uzun (Republic of Turkiye, Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Directorate General of Protection of Natural Assets) for their assistance and support during field trips. The cave plan provided in this paper was modified from an originally very detailed draft drawn by Bar & imath;l Kaymaz and Goekhan Eren Cankaya. Aerial and general photographs of the cave entrance and inside belong to Ertugrul Kulaks & imath;zoglu. Mammalogists Tarkan Yorulmaz and Kubra Keser, and arachnologist Kadir Bogac Kunt also kindly joined and supported us during field trips and lab work on specimen sorting.
