Combined effective field theory interpretation of Higgs boson, electroweak vector boson, top quark, and multijet measurements

    Borshch, V.; Babaev, A.; Uzunian, A.; Slabospitskii, S.; Kachanov, V.; Blinov, V.; Snigirev, A.; Savrin, V.; Dubinin, M.; Bunichev, V.

Constraints on Wilson coefficients (WCs) corresponding to dimension-6 operators of the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) are determined from a simultaneous fit to seven sets of CMS measurements probing Higgs boson, electroweak vector boson, top quark, and multijet production. Measurements of electroweak precision observables are also included and provide complementary constraints to those from the CMS experiment. The CMS measurements, using LHC proton-proton collision data at s=13Te, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 36.3 or 138fb-1, are chosen to provide sensitivity to a broad set of operators, for which consistent SMEFT predictions can be derived. These are primarily measurements of differential cross sections which are parameterized as functions of the WCs. In measurements targeting t(t¯)X production, SMEFT effects are modelled at the detector level. Individual constraints on 64 WCs, and constraints on 43 linear combinations of WCs, are obtained.

Measurement of multidifferential cross sections for dijet production in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV

    Zhokin, A.; Zhizhin, I.; Zarubin, A.; Yuldashev, B.S.; Voytishin, N.; Vorobyev, A.; Uzunian, A.; Uvarov, L.; Toropin, A.; Tlisova, I.

A measurement of the dijet production cross section is reported based on proton–proton collision data collected in 2016 at s=13TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 36.3fb-1. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kT algorithm for distance parameters of R=0.4 and 0.8. Cross sections are measured double-differentially (2D) as a function of the largest absolute rapidity |y|max of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta pT and their invariant mass m1,2, and triple-differentially (3D) as a function of the rapidity separation y∗, the total boost yb, and either m1,2 or the average pT of the two jets. The cross sections are unfolded to correct for detector effects and are compared with fixed-order calculations derived at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The impact of the measurements on the parton distribution functions and the strong coupling constant at the mass of the Z boson is investigated, yielding a value of αS(mZ)=0.1179±0.0019.

Search for pair production of heavy particles decaying to a top quark and a gluon in the lepton+jets final state in proton–proton collisions at √s=13TeV

    Druzhkin, D.; Borshch, V.; Babaev, A.; Uzunian, A.; Slabospitskii, S.; Konstantinov, D.; Kachanov, V.; Skovpen, Y.; Radchenko, O.; Kozyrev, A.

A search is presented for the pair production of new heavy resonances, each decaying into a top quark (t) or antiquark and a gluon (g). The analysis uses data recorded with the CMS detector from proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb-1. Events with one muon or electron, multiple jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. After using a deep neural network to enrich the data sample with signal-like events, distributions in the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of all reconstructed objects are analyzed in the search for a signal. No significant deviations from the standard model prediction are found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction squared for the pair production of excited top quarks in the t∗→tg decay channel. The upper limits range from 120 to 0.8fb for a t∗with spin-1/2 and from 15 to 1.0fb for a t∗with spin-3/2. These correspond to mass exclusion limits up to 1050 and 1700GeV for spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 t∗particles, respectively. These are the most stringent limits to date on the existence of t∗→tg resonances.

Reweighting simulated events using machine-learning techniques in the CMS experiment

    Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Benato, L.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.; Hussain, P.S.

Data analyses in particle physics rely on an accurate simulation of particle collisions and a detailed simulation of detector effects to extract physics knowledge from the recorded data. Event generators together with a geant-based simulation of the detectors are used to produce large samples of simulated events for analysis by the LHC experiments. These simulations come at a high computational cost, where the detector simulation and reconstruction algorithms have the largest CPU demands. This article describes how machine-learning (ML) techniques are used to reweight simulated samples obtained with a given set of parameters to samples with different parameters or samples obtained from entirely different simulation programs. The ML reweighting method avoids the need for simulating the detector response multiple times by incorporating the relevant information in a single sample through event weights. Results are presented for reweighting to model variations and higher-order calculations in simulated top quark pair production at the LHC. This ML-based reweighting is an important element of the future computing model of the CMS experiment and will facilitate precision measurements at the High-Luminosity LHC.

Development of systematic uncertainty-aware neural network trainings for binned-likelihood analyses at the LHC

    Druzhkin, D.; Borshch, V.; Babaev, A.; Uzunian, A.; Slabospitskii, S.; Kachanov, V.; Skovpen, Y.; Radchenko, O.; Kozyrev, A.; Dimova, T.

We propose a neural network training method capable of accounting for the effects of systematic variations of the data model in the training process and describe its extension towards neural network multiclass classification. The procedure is evaluated on the realistic case of the measurement of Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion in the ττ decay channel at the CMS experiment. The neural network output functions are used to infer the signal strengths for inclusive production of Higgs bosons as well as for their production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. We observe improvements of 12 and 16% in the uncertainty in the signal strengths for gluon and vector-boson fusion, respectively, compared with a conventional neural network training based on cross-entropy.

Luminosity determination using Z boson production at the CMS experiment

    Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.; Valle, A. Escalante Del; Hussain, P.S.

The measurement of Z boson production is presented as a method to determine the integrated luminosity of CMS data sets. The analysis uses proton–proton collision data, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV . Events with Z bosons decaying into a pair of muons are selected. The total number of Z bosons produced in a fiducial volume is determined, together with the identification efficiencies and correlations from the same data set, in small intervals of 20 pb-1 of integrated luminosity, thus facilitating the efficiency and rate measurement as a function of time and instantaneous luminosity. Using the ratio of the efficiency-corrected numbers of Z bosons, the precisely measured integrated luminosity of one data set is used to determine the luminosity of another. For the first time, a full quantitative uncertainty analysis of the use of Z bosons for the integrated luminosity measurement is performed. The uncertainty in the extrapolation between two data sets, recorded in 2017 at low and high instantaneous luminosity, is less than 0.5%. We show that the Z boson rate measurement constitutes a precise method, complementary to traditional methods, with the potential to improve the measurement of the integrated luminosity.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of pseudoscalars in the μμbb and ττbb final states

    Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. Escalante; Hussain, P.S.

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson (H) with a mass of 125GeV to a pair of light pseudoscalars a1 is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two b quarks and the other to a pair of muons or τ leptons. A data sample of proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb-1 recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level (CL) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to μμbb and to ττbb, via a pair of a1s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass ma1 and are observed to be in the range (0.17–3.3) ×10-4 and (1.7–7.7) ×10-2 in the μμbb and ττbb final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction B(H→a1a1→ℓℓbb) at 95% CL, with ℓ being a muon or a τ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction B(H→a1a1) are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space, B(H→a1a1) values above 0.23 are excluded at 95% CL for ma1 values between 15 and 60GeV.

Measurement of the production cross section for a W boson in association with a charm quark in proton–proton collisions at √s=13TeV

    Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.; Valle, A. Escalante Del; Hussain, P.S.; Jeitler, M.

The strange quark content of the proton is probed through the measurement of the production cross section for a W boson and a charm (c) quark in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV . The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm jets are tagged using the presence of a muon or a secondary vertex inside the jet. The W + c production cross section and the cross section ratio Rc±=σ(W++c¯)/σ(W-+c) are measured inclusively and differentially as functions of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the lepton originating from the W boson decay. The precision of the measurements is improved with respect to previous studies, reaching 1% in Rc±=0.950±0.005(stat)±0.010(syst) . The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Search for ZZ and ZH production in the bb¯bb¯ final state using proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

    Hayrapetyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Andrejkovic, J.W.; Bergauer, T.; Chatterjee, S.; Damanakis, K.; Dragicevic, M.; Hussain, P.S.; Jeitler, M.

A search for ZZ and ZH production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is presented, where H is the standard model (SM) Higgs boson. The search uses an event sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 133fb-1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis introduces several novel techniques for deriving and validating a multi-dimensional background model based on control samples in data. A multiclass multivariate classifier customized for the bb¯bb¯ final state is developed to derive the background model and extract the signal. The data are found to be consistent, within uncertainties, with the SM predictions. The observed (expected) upper limits at 95% confidence level are found to be 3.8 (3.8) and 5.0 (2.9) times the SM prediction for the ZZ and ZH production cross sections, respectively.
