Mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Parasitiformes) from the aphotic zone of Hacı Akif Cave (Türkiye), with the description of a new species of Macrocheles

    Özbek, Hasan Huseyin; Elverici, Mert

This study reports mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) collected from fresh bat guano in the aphotic zone of a natural cave in T & uuml;rkiye. Three species were identified, each belonging to a different family: Eulaelaps stabularis (Haemogamasidae), Macrocheles foliatus & Ouml;zbek sp. nov. (Macrochelidae) and Vulgarogamasus oudemansi (Parasitidae). Macrocheles foliatus & Ouml;zbek sp. nov. is described here as a new species based on morphological features observed in adult females. Vulgarogamasus oudemansi is recorded from T & uuml;rkiye for the first time. Two females of Eulaelaps stabularis were found directly in bat guano, and the presence of developing larvae suggests larviparity or ovolarviparity in this species. These findings expand current knowledge of cave-associated mesostigmatid diversity and provide additional information on the ecological role of bat guano habitats in supporting diverse mite assemblages in cave ecosystem.https://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:745CF591-023A-48F3-A4E9-824BB6923106

A new species of Sphairothrombium (Acari: Microtrombidiidae) from Turkey, with the first description of the larva of the genus

    Karakurt, İbrahim; Sevsay, Sevgi

Sphairothrombium gabrysisp. nov. is described based on the adult and larva. Larvae were obtained by laboratory rearing from a field-collected female. The larval stage of the genus is described for the first time. Sphairothrombium gabrysisp. nov. is the first species to be included in this genus since 1999, bringing the overall number of species assigned to this genus to 14. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:4022C01F-98E2-4E65-9515-E3000FDE0232.

The first report of malformation in a stigmaeid mite species, Storchia robusta (Berlese) (Acariformes: Stigmaeidae)

    Doğan, Salih; Doğan, Sibel

This paper reports the presence of a malformation in an adult female specimen of Storchia robusta (Berlese) collected from Sansa Gorge, Turkey. In the species, local anomalies such as the number of aggenital, genital, and body setae have been previously reported; however, this is the first time atrophy in S. robusta has been recorded.

Incidence and density of Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis (Acari: Demodicidae) in patients with acne in the province of Erzincan, Turkey

    Zeytun, Erhan; Yazıcı, Mustafa

The present study was carried out to determine the incidence and density of Demodex folliculorum (Simon, 1842) and Demodex brevis Akbulutova, 1963 in patients with acne. The study included 210 patients diagnosed with acne during clinical examination, and 150 healthy controls without any facial dermatoses. In the study, samples were taken from the right cheek, left cheek, nasolabial area, and chin of the participants using the Standard Superficial Skin Biopsy technique. Samples were examined under a light microscope, and Demodex species were identified and counted. Demodex positivity (≥5 mites) was detected in 62.4% of the patients and 16.7% of the controls in the study (p < 0.001). A total of 3325 (mean: 25.4/cm 2 ) mites were isolated from Demodex-positive patients. A total of 2015 (mean: 19.2/cm 2 ) mites were isolated from patients infested with D. folliculorum only, 52 (mean: 7.4/cm 2 ) mites were isolated from patients infested with D. brevis only, and 1058 (mean: 65.2/cm 2 ) mites were isolated from patients infested with both species. The mean density of both mites (co-infection D. folliculorum and D. brevis) was detected as 21.0, 43.5, and 117.1/cm 2 respectively, in patients with mild, moderate, and severe acne. In the controls who was Demodex positive, only D. folliculorum or co-infection with both mites were detected, not D. brevis alone. A total of 167 (mean: 6.7/cm 2 ) mites were isolated from these controls. As a result, Demodex mites were found to be very common and intense in patients with acne in Erzincan, Turkey. It was also concluded that there was a positive correlation between Demodex mites and degree of acne, and that the co-infection of D. folliculorum and D. brevis aggravated the clinical picture in patients with acne. It may be helpful to consider these findings in clinical assessments of patients with acne.

A new species of the genus Pachydellus (Acari: Pachylaelapidae) from Giresun Province in Turkey, with some notes on pachylaelapid mites in Turkey

    Özbek, Hasan Hüseyin

Pachydellus giresunensissp. nov. was collected from Pinus litter in Giresun Province, Turkey. It is a member of the Pachydellus sculptus species group. The new species differs from other species in the group by its very long dorsal shield setae and the absence of tubercles on femur IV of the male. The fauna of Pachylaelapidae found in Turkey is reviewed, and some new records are added. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:E0629819-82EB-46EF-B8A2-005A445E2F4E.

Two new species of Pachyseius Berlese (Acari: Gamasida, Pachylaelapidae) from Europe, with a redescription of Pachyseius angustiventris Willmann

    Mašán, Peter; Özbek, Hasan Hüseyin

Pachyseius accedenssp. nov. and Pachyseius arrhenobasissp. nov. are described and illustrated based on specimens from litter and soil detritus of montane forest habitats in Bulgaria (Rhodope Mts., Malesh Mts.) and Romania (Carpathian Mts.: Bârgău Mts., Călimani Mts.), respectively. In addition, Pachyseius angustiventris Willmann, 1935, a little known and inadequately described congeneric species, is newly redescribed and illustrated, based on females from the Western and Central Europe (Wales, Germany). Comparing the type material of the following species, Pachyseius morenoi Moraza, 1993 is not considered to be a valid species, and is included in synonymy with P. angustiventris.
