Effect of the aerobic power test performed at low-medium altitude on the myostatin, pgc-1 alpha and klotho levels

Tetik Dündar, Sibel; Kuzucu, Mehmet; Varol, S. Rana

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the aerobic power test on myostatin, PGC-1, and Klotho levels in athletes who had acclimatized to the altitude. MethodS: a total of twenty athletes consisting of nine women and eleven men with an age average of 19.80±2.587 who were engaged in cross-country skiing at elite level participated in the study. the study was carried out at a ski center (altitude: 2000 m). the participants were measured for age, height, body mass (by standard methods), aerobic power test, blood lactate level after rest and aerobic power test. Blood was obtained from the (basal) antecubital vein in the fasting condition before to the aerobic power test. two hours and 48 hours after the test, blood taking was repeated. Klotho, myostatin and PGC-1α levels were examined in the serum samples by the ELISA device and MicroELISA method. RESULTS: As a result, the aerobic power test which lasted 15 minutes significantly increased the PGC-1α (31.2%) and Klotho (332.8%) levels (P<0.016). The serum, on the other hand, had no effect on the level of myostatin (7.2%) cheval (P>0.016). CONCLUSIONS: Acute exercise (single repetition) was found to be effective even on elite athletes who had adapted to the altitude. Myostatin level did not change with the aerobic power test performed at low-mid altitude, but PGC-1α and Klotho levels increased.

Effects of time-restricted nutrition on urinary density, body composition and athletic performance: model Ramadan fast

    Dündar, Sibel Tetik

BACKGROUND: Fasting is a restriction of foodstuff covering a certain period of time during the day. It is one of the religious services which people render due to their faith. Fasting is one of the intermittent starvation diets and, likewise, there are such diets that are designed in different styles and forms. This study has been carried out in order to study the effects of the Ramadan fast which is one of the time restricted nutritional models on the urinary density, body composition athletic performance. METHODS: Twenty-seven students whose age average is 20,57±1,59, who study at the Faculty of Sports Sciences and who play sports recreationally participated in the study. All participants recorded all the food which they took during the hours between the breaking and starting times of fasting when having food is allowed during the month of Ramadan. At the same time, the amount of water consumed, exercising and sleeping times, number of cigarettes smoked were recorded as well. In determining the somatotypes, a skinfold caliper, a tape and a digital compass were used in order to measure skin fold thickness, perimeter and diameter respectively. Body mass, fat, muscle, bone and water rates were measured by means of a digital body analysis scale. Urine chemistry was measured by the reflectance photometry method. A WAnT and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test were performed in order to determine the anaerobic power level and the aerobic power level respectively. Shapiro-Wilk analysis, descriptive statistics and frequency analysis and T test were employed in the distribution of data, in the averages and preliminary test and final test comparison respectively. RESULTS: Consequently, fasting may be a benefit for either the reduction or stopping of cigarette smoking. At the same time, effective results may be obtained in losing weight despite the biological rhythm. If the exercise level is increased in a controlled manner and well organized, it may lead to an increase in muscular mass. CONCLUSIONS: As a result of this study, it was determined that the anaerobic power of fasting people increased and their aerobic power decreased.

Idiopathic granulomatous gastritis: An entity clinically mimicking tumor

    Tayfur, Mahir; Balci, Mecdi G.

Idiopathic granulomatous gastritis is a rare disease. Its diagnosis must be made after excluding other causes of granulomatous disease like Crohn's disease, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, mycosis, syphilis, foreign body reaction and other reasons. Although it is associated with Helicobacter pylori, it might see rarely without Helicobacter pylori. It sometimes might be confused with malignancy clinically. The definitive diagnosis is made only by histopathological examination. In our case, a 49-year-old Caucasian woman admitted to hospital with epigastric pain complaint. In esophagastroduodenoscopy, there was antral hyperemia and a 13-mm hypoechoic mass lesion in submucosal layer. A biopsy was taken with prediagnosis of malignancy. Histopathologic examination determined a non-caseating gastric granulomatous inflammation. There was no histopathological finding of malignancy and any specific granulomatous diseases. This case was reported as idiopathic granulomatous gastritis.

Analysis of the correlation between endurance trainings and some hematological values

    Tetik, Sibel; Dündar, Uǧur

BACKGROUND: This study has been performed in order to determine the level of correlation between endurance trainings done and some hematological values. METHODS: Thirty-nine students studying at the Sports Sciences and Technology Academy of the Pamukkale University took voluntarily part at the research. Blood Drawing and analysis where performed in the central laboratory of the Pamukkale University. In defining subjects' body fat levels, regional skinfold density was measured using the Skinfold Caliper, and the lengths were measured using the Holtain anthropometry set. In determining the endurance performance the Conconi test was applied. For analysis of the data the IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 21.0 package program was used. Identifying Statistics was performed in order to determine the data distribution. For the analysis of correlations between parametric data Pearson Correlation, and for the analyze of correlation between Nonparametric data Spearman Correlation analysis was performed. Results were submitted as average (X) and standard deviation (SS). P<0.05 value has been accepted as being significant. RESULTS: The correlation between performed endurance trainings and some blood parameters is significant. CONCLUSIONS: It was determined that the performed trainings are affecting the hematological values.

Effect of the cortisol hormone on endurance trainings in the morning and evening

Dündar, Uǧur; Tetik, Sibel; Yapici, Ayşegül

BACKGROUND: There are divergences regarding differences shown by endurance trainings made in the morning hours and endurance trainings made in the evening depending on the cortisol hormone level. This study has dealt the differences occurred in result of endurances trainings made in the morning and evening hours depending on the cortisol hormone level varying in the morning and evening hours. METHODS: Thirty-nine students participated voluntarily to the research. The hormone levels and some hematological parameters were inspected by means of the blood samples given at 07:00 a.m. and 04:00 p.m. by the subjects separated as morning and evening control group. As exercise protocol the "Conconi Test" was applied during the endurance evaluation. After a 6 weekly exercise protocol the hormone level, hematological parameters and "Conconi test" protocol was re-applied and differences were examined. RESULTS: In the study performed by us it was observed that the level of the cortisol hormone in the endurance training made in the morning and evening hours has a significant effect on the physical and physiological parameters in the body. CONCLUSIONS: In the performed study it was seen that in our study, beyond other studies, the evening hours were the time, when the cortisol hormone was more effective during the measuring of the subjects constituting the study group.

A rare cause of hematuria; penile metastasis of prostate cancer

    Demir, A.; Akin, Y.; Yapicier, O.; Basara, I.

Despite the rich vascularization and complex circulation, metastasis to the penis is rare. The most common symptoms are penile induration, swelling and palpable nodular lesions on penis. These patients have a poor prognosis receiving various treatment modalities. The appearance of disseminations is still controversial and there is not an efficacious therapy. Herein, we present a patient who admitted with the chief complaints of hematuria. After clinical, radiological and pathological evaluations, the patient was diagnosed as a very rare cause of hematuria; penile metastasis of prostate cancer. In literature, this is the first case of prostate cancer metastasis to penis which is presented with hematuria. In follow-up period of him, although he was treated with chemotherapy, he died 10 months after the diagnosis.
