Yilmaz, Betuel Kalkan; Alptekin, Okay
Objective: This study aimed to assess the association between women's platelet indices and bone mineral density to evaluate osteoporosis, which has a significant impact on quality of life throughout the postmenopausal age. Materials and Methods: The study was retrospectively designed, and data from 316 postmenopausal patients who applied to the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic between January 2021 and January 2023, underwent bone mineral density measurements during follow-up, and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were obtained. The data were evaluated in 3 groups as normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis according to bone mineral density. Platelet indices, age, body mass index (BMI), and bone mineral density were compared with platelet indices in the hemogram results of the patients on the same day. Results: The mean ages of the osteoporosis, osteopenia, and normal groups were 61.4, 58.4, and 56.2 years, respectively. The mean weight was 72.9 kg in the osteoporosis group, 74.09 kg in the osteopenia group, and 79.4 kg in the normal group. When the groups were compared, no significant difference was observed between age, platelet count, platelet distribution width, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-large cell ratio, and thrombocytocrit but a significant difference was found between the osteoporosis and normal groups in terms of BMI (p=0.027). Conclusion: Although numerous studies in the literature have demonstrated a connection between osteoporosis and MPV and platelet count, our investigation revealed no such association and showed that the risk of osteoporosis decreased as BMI increased.

Ergül, Emine Esra; Sağlam, Gonca
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitamin D levels, body mass index (BMI), physical activity levels and life-style factors in postmenopausal women and investigate the correlation between vitamin D levels, BMI and physical activity. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 postmenopausal women were included in this cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic features, lifestyle factors such as calcium and vitamin D supplementation and sun exposure, and BMI, and 25 hydroxyvitamin vitamin D [25(OH)D3] levels of the participants were recorded. The [International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) Short Form (SF)] was applied to all participants. The correlation between 25(OH)D3, BMI, and IPAQ scores has been investigated. Forty postmenopausal healthy individuals were included in the study for the comparison of physical activity level with the patient group. Results: The mean 25(OH)D3 level of the postmenopausal participants was 18.97±10.0 ng/mL, the mean BMI was 27.93±5.19, and the IPAQ score was 316.15±370.42. Compared with the IPAQ-SF score of the control group, the activity level of the postmenopausal patients was lower (p<0.001). A negative significant correlation between 25(OH)D3 levels and BMI (p<0.001) and a positive significant correlation was observed between 25(OH)D3 levels and IPAQ-SF scores in postmenopausal women (p<0.001). Conclusion: BMI and physical activity levels seem to be associated with vitamin D levels in the postmenopausal period. The importance of vitamin D deficiency, weight control, life-style factors, and physical activity in the postmenopausal period should be emphasized in patients.

Alptürker, Kezban Armağan; Akgül, Özgür
Hughes-Stovin syndrome (HSS) is a very rare autoimmune clinical disorder that has been described as the presence of thrombophlebitis and multiple aneurysms in pulmonary and/or bronchial arteries. The pathogenesis is still unknown, but this syndrome is often thought of as a manifestation of Behçet disease. Herein, we describe a 59-year-old male patient who was admitted to massive hemoptysis. HSS was diagnosed on the basis of imaging pulmonary artery aneurysms and a history of lower extremity thrombosis. It differs in terms of the occurrence of this rare syndrome in an elderly patient. In this syndrome, which has a high mortality, the results are satisfactory when the treatment is started with a rapid diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Tradional practices, have been keeping up-to-date against modernized medical applications. The purpose of this study is to determine the knowledge, traditional beliefs and practices of mothers with 0-24 month-old children concerning child care. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted with 207 mothers who applied to five family health centers located in the city center of Erzincan due to any reason between October 2014 and February 2015, had an infant aged between 0 and 24 months, and met the inclusion criteria. The data were collected by face-to-face interview method using the description form. Descriptive statistics was given as number, percentage and average. RESULTS: Approximately 40,1% of the children were between 0 and 6 months, 65,2% of the mothers received information on childcare and 49,6% of these received such information from a nurse/doctor. Some 2,9 % of the mothers used creams and powders for umblical cord falling off, 39,1% of them used procedures to protect their child from jaundice, 27,2% took their child for a stroll after the first forty days of birth, 22,7% salted their child to prevent bad odors, 48,8% rocked their child to sleep, and 58% swaddled their babies. The mean age of the mothers was 27,14 +/- 5,50 (min: 18 - max: 45). DISCUSSION and CONCLUSION: According to these results, mothers seem to use some traditional practices which may harm their babies' health. Therefore, nurses should provide childcare training and counseling to mothers during antenatal and postnatal follow-ups and awareness should be raised in the society about these matters.

Objective: Determine the association between the bone mineral density and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients with TBI included to the study. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements which determines the femur neck and L1-4 vertebrate T scores in patients was performed via Lunar Prodigy DPX system. Clinical parameters such as types of involvements (plegia), upper-lower extremity spasticity values, presence of heterotypic ossification, ambulation levels were determined and their relations with femur neck and L1-4 vertebrate T scores were examined with Mann-Whitney U Test. Results: In the comparison of sub groups of type of plegia (tetraplegic/hemi-paraplegic), lower extremity spasticity values [Ascworth score 0/1-2-3-4), presence of heterotopic ossification no statistically significant (p>0.05) difference was found in the femur neck and L1-4 vertebrate T scores. On the other hand, in the subgroups determined according to ambulatory levels of the patients (confined to bed-wheelchair/ambulated (orthesis-hand support-independent)] significant difference was observed in the femur neck T scores (p=0.044). Femur neck T scores were significantly high in ambulated patients (p=0.044). Conclusion: In TBI cases ambulation level is a factor which significantly affect bone mineral density. It is necessary to ambulate patients with potential as soon as possible and to plan alternative approaches in patient could not be ambulated.

Akkuş, Selami; Sayılır, Selçuk; Yılmaz, Özden Sibel Odabaşı; Gülçin Uğurlu, Fatma; Ersoz, Murat
Amaç: Travmatik beyin hasarlı (TBH) olgularda kemik mineral yoğunluğunun klinik ve demografik faktörlerle ilişkisinin incelenmesidir.Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmada, 22 TBH olgusu değerlendirildi. Hastalarda femur boyun ve L1-4 vertebra T skorlarının belirlendiği dual enerji X-ışını absorptiometrisi ölçümleri Lunar Prodigy DPX sistemi kullanılarak yapıldı. Hastaların tutulum tipleri (pleji), alt-üst ekstremite spastisite değerleri, heterotopik ossifikasyon varlığı, ambülasyon düzeyleri gibi klinik parametreleri belirlendi ve bunların femur boyun ve L1-4 vertebra T skorlarıyla ilişkisi Mann-Whitney U testi kullanılarak incelendi. Bulgular: Hastaların yapılan incelemesinde tutulum tipleri (tetraplejik/hemi-paraplejik), alt ekstremite spastisite değerleri ve heterotopik ossifikasyon varlığı (var/yok) alt gruplarının karşılaştırmalarında femur boyun ve L1-4 vertebra T skorlarında istatistiksel anlamlı fark gözlenmedi (p>0,05). Buna karşılık ambülasyon düzeylerine göre belirlenen alt gruplarda [yatağa bağımlı, tekerlekli iskemle/ambüle (ortezle-el desteğiyle-bağımsız)] femur boyun T skorlarında anlamlı fark gözlendi (p=0,044). Ambüle hastalarda femur boyun T skoru anlamlı olarak yüksekti (p=0,044).Sonuç: Travmatik beyin hasarlı olgularda ambülasyon düzeyi kemik mineral yoğunluğuna istatistiksel olarak anlamlı etki eden bir faktördür. Potansiyeli olan olguların olabildiğince erken ambüle edilmesi, ambüle olamayacak hastalarda alternatif yaklaşımların planlanması gerekli görünmektedir
