KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS OF SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY IN PRE-MARITAL HEALTH SCREENINGS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

    Yanmaz, Gadime; Gürsoy, Ersan

Purpose: Early diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is crucial. This study assesses the awareness and attitudes toward SMA screening among individuals preparing for marriage. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in three family health centers in the central district of Erzincan from June to September 2023. A researcher -designed 15 -item instrument was utilized to collect demographic data and assess knowledge and attitudes regarding SMA among participants. Results: The study was participated in by 197 individuals, with an average age determined to be 29.45 +/- 7.48. The proportion of those supporting the implementation of SMA screening was 84.8% (n=167), while the intention to undergo the test was identified at 72.6% (n=143). A significant relationship was found between the willingness to be tested and variables such as the level of education, the absence of disabled close relatives, not considering SMA to be genetically inherited, finding screenings appropriate, the perceived impact of test results on marriage, and the belief that screening could not be conducted after marriage. Conclusion: While most recognized SMA's severity, there's a notable deficit in understanding its preventability, suggesting the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance genetic screening uptake.

INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATHLETES' ANXIETY ABOUT CATCHING CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) AND THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARDS NUTRITION

    Yilmaz, Duygu Sevinc; Secer, Emrah

The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic in China, it has become an important public health problem globally, causing many organizations to be canceled, education and workplace restrictions, and curfews to be declared. This study aims to determine the relationship between the anxiety of catching Covid-19 in athletes and their attitudes towards nutrition. The study group consists of 227 athletes studying in the field of sports sciences. To determine the demographic information of the athletes in the research, Personal Information Form, Scale of Athletes' Anxiety of catching New Type Coronavirus (Covid-19) and Attitude Scale towards Healthy Eating were used. In the analysis of the data, distribution characteristics were determined and the suitability of parametric tests was reviewed, independent sample t-test, ANOVA test, Pearson correlation analysis, and simple linear regression analysis were used to determine the relationship between variables. It is seen that those who have sufficient knowledge about Covid-19 have higher average scores on knowledge about nutrition, positive nutrition, and nutrition than those who do not have sufficient knowledge. It has been determined that there are negative significant relationships between the individual anxiety, socialization anxiety, and total anxiety of catching Covid-19 of the athletes and their attitudes towards nutrition detected.

A RARE CASE: NON-RECURRENT LARYNGEAL NERVE

Ulusahin, Mehmet; Tomas, Kadir; Arslan, Mithat Kerim

Non-recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve (NRLN) is a very rare nerve variation seen during thyroidectomy. Identification and preservation of this nerve is crucial for post-operative life of the patient. In this paper, we presented a 55-year old female patient with right NRLN identified during operation performed due to multinodular goiter (MNG). This presented case was intraoperatively identified as NRLN during right lobe dissection and it was preserved through its course until entrance to the larynx with careful dissection. Patient was discharged at first postoperative day without problem during postoperative monitoring. Anatomic variations may cause nerve damage; therefore identification and preservation with careful dissection have utmost importance.
