5 →- ArticleAçık Erişim2022Prevalence and density of Demodex mites (Acari: Demodecidae) in patients with seborrheic dermatitis
Zeytun, Erhan; Yazıcı, Mustafa
This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and density of Demodex mites in patients with seborrheic dermatitis. The study included 37 patients and 35 healthy controls who were diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis by clinical examination. The sample materials were taken from the cheek, nasolabial and jaw areas of the participants using the standard superficial skin biopsy method and examined for the presence and number of Demodex mites under light microscopy. Demodex spp. mites were detected in 34 (91.9%) of the patients and in 20 (60%) of the controls. Demodex folliculorum was detected in 34 of 37 patients (mean 15.7/cm2; total 535) and D. brevis (mean 0.6/cm2; 20 total) in six patients. Demodex folliculorum was detected in 20 of 35 healthy controls (mean 2.7/cm2; total 56) and D. brevis (mean 0.5/cm2; total 1) in one of the 35 healthy controls. When patients and controls were compared in terms of Demodex prevalence and density, the differences were statistically significant. In conclusion, Demodex mites are more prevalent in patients with seborrheic dermatitis in Erzincan Province of Turkey. This condition may be related to the amount of sebum in patients with seborrheic dermatitis, however, this issue should be supported by further studies in which sebum levels are measured and ilarger number of patients are involved.
- ArticleYalnız künye2017Demodex (Acari: Demodicidae) Infestation in Patients with KOAH, and the Association with Immunosuppression
Ölmez, Hasan; Zeytun, Erhan
This study aimed to determine of the Demodex infestation in patients with KOAH, and the association with immunosuppression. The study included 101 patients who presented to the Clinic of Chest Diseases at the Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital and were diagnosed with KOAH, and 80 healthy controls who were not have any of chronic disease and facial dermatoses. Samples were taken from the right and left cheek using the Standard Superficial Skin Biopsy (SSSB) technique, and examined under light microscopy. Overall, Demodex mites (mean 22.74/cm2) were detected in 87.1% of patients; in 82.2% of patients had D. folliculorum (mean 21.78/cm2) and in 40.6% had D. brevis (mean 4.70/cm2) of infestation. Demodex mites (mean 5.27/cm2) were detected in 27.5% of healthy controls; in 25% of controls had D. folliculorum (mean 5.05/cm2) and in 12.5% had D. brevis (mean 1.5/cm2) of infestation. On the other hand, Demodex density was approximately 3.5-fold higher in patients who were taken immunosuppressive therapy, and the difference between immunosuppression and Demodex infestation was statistically significant. In conclusion, in our study have detected that Demodex infestation in the patients with KOAH was more than controls. In addition to, it has been detected that immunosuppression has been elevated to density of Demodex. It may be helpful to consider these findings in clinical assessment of skin lesions and dermatoses in patients who were taken immunosuppressive therapy
- ArticleAçık Erişim2017Prevalence and Density of Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis (Acari: Demodicidae) in Erzincan Province
Doğan, Salih; Tilki, Engin; Zeytun, Erhan
Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and density of Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis in Erzincan Province and the association between Demodex spp. and skin moisture, pH, and temperature. Methods: The study included total 300 healthy participants without dermatological ailments and residing in Erzincan Province. Moisture, pH, and temperature of the cheek were measured, and the presence of mite was determined in samples from the cheek, nasolabial, and chin region using the standard superficial skin biopsy technique. Results: The prevalence and density of D. folliculorum and D. brevis were found to be 61.3% (mean 14.3/cm 2 ) and 23.3% (mean 3.2/cm 2 ), respectively, in healthy participants. Infestation by Demodex spp. was greater in the cheek (mean 10.4/cm 2 ), followed by the nasolabial region (mean 7.2/cm 2 ) and chin (mean 6.6/cm 2 ), respectively (p<0.001). The prevalence and density of Demodex spp. were greater in those with dry skin (mean 11.6/cm 2 ), pH of 5.5-7.0 (mean 11.2/cm 2 ), and temperature of 20-23°C (mean 13.1/cm 2 ). Males, with aged >60 years, with lower educational status, and who were single were significantly more infested with Demodex spp. Conclusion: Demodex mites are very prevalent in healthy individuals with different skin moisture, skin pH, skin temperature, and demograph- ic characteristics. This may be taken into consideration when epidemiological and clinical studies are conducted on patients having different dermatological ailments.
