Yılmaz, Tuba; Başaran, Yağmur Koç
The rapid advancement of digitalization today has made the intensive use of technology a factor that could have profound effects on individuals' lifestyles and professional approaches. In this context, the technology habits of higher education administrators and the potential of these habits to reach addiction levels have emerged as a significant subject of study. The main aim of the research is to determine the administrators' awareness of technology addiction, the effects of this situation on their work performance, and to propose potential solutions. The study utilized a qualitative method, conducting in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 26 administrators. Participants were selected from different management levels, and the data obtained were analyzed through descriptive analysis to create themes. The results indicate that administrators could not fully clarify the concept of technology addiction but indicated that excessive use. Particularly, the lack of control in mobile phone and social media use stands out, while some administrators stated that technology facilitates work processes, others expressed that constant connectivity disrupts work-life balance. In this direction, the importance of awareness training, digital detox practices, and effective technology management strategies has been emphasized.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2025Claims of teacher learning and retrospective tracing of claimed events in video-mediated transnational virtual exchange interactions
Uyar, Gulsah; Balaman, Ufuk
Teachers are increasingly being recognized as active agents whose in situ pedagogical decisions are socially manifested. Relatedly, teacher education cycles, including collaborative pedagogical design work and reflective conversations on the pedagogical outcomes of design decisions, gained momentum in preservice language teacher education to explore the affordances of these decisions for teacher learning in talk-in-interaction across multiple pedagogical events. Using multimodal conversation analysis, this study describes how transnational groups of preservice language teachers, within the scope of a Virtual Exchange project, reflect on their experiences of teacher education activities such as collaborative task design, teacher educator feedback, and critically analyzing the implementation of their designs by actual L2 learners. A close examination of the video-mediated interactions of preservice teachers (PSTs) shows that small-group reflective conversations create opportunities to identify the interactional practices and teacher education activities that lead to claims of teacher learning. We present a collection of cases that include the PSTs' claims of teacher learning (e.g. I learned X) as a learning-relevant discursive construction and retrospectively trace the moments of claimed teacher learning across earlier teacher education events.

Uyar, Gulsah; Balaman, Ufuk
This paper deals with an end-of-semester interactional competence (IC) assessment of L2 oral communication skills for higher education students. Despite the growing research interest in L2 IC assessment using paired role-play tasks, the non-verbal actions of the learners in these contexts remain largely unexplored. With this in mind, this study uses multimodal Conversation Analysis to examine gazing at role-cards in orienting to, structuring, and navigating through the assessment situations, and displaying IC by attending to task initiation, asking/giving task-relevant details, eliciting/making/delaying offers, and ending the conversation. The findings bring new insights into multimodal aspects of L2 IC assessment.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2024Change of Epistemic Stance of Transnational Pre-Service Teachers in-and-through Collaborative Data-Led Reflective Dialogues
Daşkın, Nilüfer Can; Uyar, Gülşah
This study explored collaborative data-led reflective dialogues of transnational PSTs by using Multimodal Conversation Analysis. The study draws on the screen recordings of a Virtual Exchange (VE) project (n=72), which involves collaborative online task design, implementation of tasks by L2 students, and reflection on students’ performance and their experience of the VE project. The close examination of the data showed that through collaborative reflective dialogues, PSTs (i) raised awareness of their practice and generated knowledge; (ii) made a connection between theory and practice; (iii) became more aware of their epistemic stance; (iv) identified and described a problem and found solutions to these problems (Farrell, 2015). Therefore, micro-moments of learning and understanding were created in-an- through reflection and it was revealed explicitly through reference to lack of knowledge in the past. This study has implications for teacher education programs, which should encourage reflective dialogues of transnational PSTs to create opportunities for teacher learning.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2022Affordances of Lexicon Learning in Peer-Peer Computer Mediated Interaction During Covid-19 Outbreak: Doing Teaching, Initiating and Doing Learning Practices
Uyar, Gülşah
The outbreak of COVID-19 has changed education practices through moving face- to-face education to complete internet-based education. Therefore, the integration of technology which already gained acceleration before the pandemic has become the only solution to be able to carry out educational practices. The issue of making students communicate with each other on online platforms to get the best from educational practice and peer learning especially came into prominence following the outbreak of the COVID-19. This era also brought/raised the importance of the examination of technology integration in various practices in education including the peer-peer interaction in video-mediated task-based communication. To shed a light on an aspect of technology integration, the current study makes use of the data that comes from video recordings of online peer-peer interaction on individual virtual city tours of a group for three weeks during COVID-19 pandemic. The video-recordings of student-student interaction in groups are analyzed by using the micro lenses of multimodal conversation analysis (CA). The study contributes to the field with an in-depth examination of peer-peer interaction out of the classroom. The examination of the data shows that participants do lexicon teaching, initiate and do lexicon learning via negotiation of meaning during their videoconferences on their virtual city tours. Thus, it is obvious that peer-peer computer-mediated interaction provides learning opportunities and enables learning which suggests that tasks which require peer-peer interaction out of classroom can be integrated into course design.

- ArticleAçık Erişim2020Charles Dickens’ ın A Christmas Carol başlıklı eserinin Türkçe çevirisinin çocuk edebiyatı çevirisi bağlamında Berman metodolojisine göre analizi
Karabulut, Emine; Erguvan, Mehmet
- ArticleAçık Erişim2020The analysis of translator identity and translation decisions of the Turkish translation of Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred through paratexts
Karabulut, Emine
The ultimate purpose of feminist translation is to have the voices of women heard in transnational platform as a rebellion against the oppression, violence, and cruelties implemented on them. In this study, the Turkish translation of Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred which was translated into Turkish as Yakın by Emek Ergün and published by Ithaki Publishing House in 2019 was analyzed “paratextually” as put forward by Gérard Genette (1997). The source text in this study, Kindred was published in 2003 by Beacon Press. The aim of this study is to analyze the translator identity in the context of “voices in translation” and “translation pact” asserted by Cecilia Alvstad (2013, 2014) and to examine how the discursive presence of the translator fictionalizes the relationship between the translator and the readers by explicating the decisions of the translator and the foundations of the translation. As a result of the analysis in this study, it was observed with the help of her preface and translator notes that Ergün’s being a feminist translator and expert as an academician in the field affected her decisions in the process of translation. Besides, it was found out that her preface and translator’s notes made her discursive presence visible, constituted the “implied reader” in target culture in the position of “implied author” as proposed in Chatman's Narrative Communication Model (1978) and this discursive presence of her enabled the translation to be read as original by the target readers in the scope of translation pact.
