The blue anatolia thought: the color of anatolia, the spirit of kemalism

    Özdemir, Celal Oral

This study aims to examine the Mavi Anadolu (Blue Anatolia) thought as a culturally grounded and locally rooted alternative within Turkiye’s modernization process. Initiated by Halikarnas Balıkçısı, Sabahattin Eyüboğlu, and Azra Erhat, this intellectual orientation positioned Anatolia as a cradle of civilizations and traced the roots of Western civilization back to these lands. It redefined modernity through principles of people-centered enlightenment and secularism. The article analyzes the theoretical foundations of this movement within the frameworks of identity theory, collective memory, and cultural nationalism, and functionally interprets the life stories of its key figures. The Mavi Anadolu movement, by synthesizing an Ionian-centered reading of Anatolian history with a popular enlightenment vision and Kemalist modernization, offers a culturally continuous and unique perspective that can be termed “Blue Kemalism.” Ultimately, it reveals the possibilities of imagining a vernacular and humanist modernity in the Turkish context.

Anger, Joy and Beyond: Carnivalesque Transformation and Affective Management in the Saraçhane Protests

Özdemir, Celal Oral; Tan, Gülçin Özge

This study examines the transformation in the emotional repertoire of Turkey’s opposition politics and social movements, focusing on the Saraçhane Rallies that began on March 19, 2025. Adopting a psycho-political approach, the article addresses the emotional state of social opposition and discusses the evolution of the relationship between opposition parties and street politics through the lens of strategic choices. The research analyses the process by which protests, triggered by a “moral shock” stemming from injustice, evolve into a “carnivalesque” joy and ultimately transform into a routinized political performance. Employing a qualitative and interpretive methodology, the study argues that major emotions such as anger and intense euphoria carry the risk of being dissipated within representation-oriented politics and image-focused political performances. Conversely, it posits that minor emotions like insecurity and a sense of hopelessness offer a more resilient and foundational basis for social opposition. The article focuses on the democratic transformation potential of spontaneous emotional alliances emerging at the grassroots level around a shared sense of “woundedness,” beyond alliances at the leadership level. It emphasizes that freeing negative emotions from their pathological nature and moving beyond a state of melancholy could enable oppositional subjects to develop new structures and rebuild society.

İspanya'da Sağ Siyasetin Dönüşümü: Franco'dan Merkeze, Merkezden Vox'a

Triadic Institutionalization of the Contemporary Far Right: Interactions Between Party, Movement, and Leadership

    Özdemir, Celal Oral

This study analyzes the rise of the far right, which began with the 2008 global financial crisis, not simply as an ideological reaction but through a triadic institutional framework focusing on the dynamic interaction between parties, movements, and leaders. It argues that the core mechanism behind the far right’s success is a symbiotic, feedback-driven process of institutionalization involving these three elements: In this model, the party provides institutional resources while the movement mobilizes grassroots energy and street legitimacy. The leader, in turn, binds these two elements with charismatic authority, becoming the architect of reality in a post-truth political environment. Adopting qualitative and theoretical methodologies, this study analyzes the modes of reproduction of the contemporary far right by synthesizing concepts from theorists such as Laclau, Mouffe, Rancière, Tilly, and Weber. It is argued that leaders elevated by social movements and political parties subsequently acquire the power to transform both the party and the movement, and even to establish reality. It is argued that with this power, the far right can reshape democratic institutions from within. This triadic analysis aims to offer a new conceptual tool to the literature by explaining how the far right can maintain an anti-institutional discourse while simultaneously institutionalizing itself in three steps.

A Liberal Portrait in the Early Republic Period: Ahmet Ağaoğlu

    Özdemir, Celal Oral

Abstract Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the biography of Ahmet Ağaoğlu, an intellectual figure from the transitional period between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, within the framework of his advocated concept of individualism. Design/Methodology: The research has examined the transformation in Ahmet Ağaoğlu's thought by focusing on his works. In addition to primary sources, secondary sources such as memoirs, books, and articles about Ağaoğlu have also been utilized. Findings: Ahmet Ağaoğlu was influenced by various political ideas throughout different periods of his life. In his youth, he was influenced by Orientalist thoughts, later identifying as a Turkish nationalist. During the process of nation-state building, he portrayed a profile of a liberal intellectual. Ağaoğlu, who was an early Republican liberal intellectual, came to be perceived as a dissident and estranged intellectual after the 1930s. Limitations: The study is focusing on Ağaoğlu's ideological transformation and his liberal identity. The thoughts during his nationalist and orientalist periods have not been detailed. Originality/Value: The main value of the study lies in presenting Ahmet Ağaoğlu's biography along with highlighting the trajectory of his liberal ideology.
