Queer literature in Turkish translation (1928-2020)

    Abdal, Göksenin

While not necessarily encompassing direct references to LGBTQ+ identities, queer literature reflects fictionalized narratives from the perspective of sexually marginalized communities. As such, it is generally subject to stigmatization and alienation in societies where heterosexuality is deemed superior to "queerness". The heterosexist agenda and the discrimination mechanisms that it brings with itself have the potential to consolidate such hierarchical positionings, turning the literary realm into an insuperable basis for disseminating and enforcing hegemonic and discriminatory lines of thinking and reasoning against anyone who defines themselves outside of the heterosexual, cisgender norm. So, it can be suggested that the dynamics in the publishing industry, including the dissemination of translations and original works of art, are closely related to how these signifying practices affect the outlook of gender, sexuality, and sexual orientations in various contexts. In this respect, this study aims to review the journey of queer literature in Turkish translation from the early Republican era until today, with a focus on the period between 1928 and 2020. This study comprises three parts. In the first part, the existence conditions of queer literature are briefly discussed with respect to how it is received in the Global South and Global North, while the second part focuses on the debates regarding the incidentally marginalized positioning of translated queer texts in a literary system. The third part, on the other hand, tries to provide sound answers to the question of how the works of queer literature are contextualized in Türkiye with reflections on different decades, starting from the Republican period. In conclusion, it is inferred that the representation of queerness and the translation and publication of queer-themed works of literature in the Turkish literary scene have been profoundly affected by the societal changes and the dynamics of the publishing industry since the Republican period in Türkiye.

The Bounds of Translatorial Perspective in the Turkish Translation of Rita Mae Brown’s Rubyfruit Jungle

    Abdal, Göksenin

Queer translation brings new possibilities for expanding the definitions of gender identities and sexual orientations in the contexts of language. By adding alternative meanings to sexual expressions outside the heterosexual matrix, this type of translation has the potential to deconstruct the given categories of gender and sexuality in patriarchal culture. This is further enhanced by the collective ventures of literary agents publishing literary texts with queering perspectives in defiance of the aggression, stigmatization, and discrimination against sexually marginalized identities in society. This study aims to find answers to the question of how translatorial decisions affect the outlook of queerness in Yakut Orman, Dılşa Ritsa Eşli’s 2021 Turkish translation of Rita Mae Brown’s (1973) Rubyfruit Jungle, which is considered a reference book for queer literature in the Western world. This study is comprised of three parts. The first part provides an outline of the queer translation approach as a novel critique of the reflections of heteronormativity within translation practices in the target language, literature, and culture system. The second part presents a brief analysis of the implicit and explicit references to queerness in Rubyfruit Jungle, while the third part focuses on how the notion of queerness has been recreated in its Turkish translation Yakut Orman within the context of Démont’s (2018) conceptualization of queer translation. Ultimately, Eşli is revealed to have given accurate depictions of the queer identity in some areas, but Eşli’s queering perspective failed to reach its full potential due to the intense use of Démont’s misrecognizing translation with the implication of the hegemonic heterosexual and/or male gaze in the Turkish version, resulting in a limited representation of queerness in the target context.

A Comparison of Feminist Term Translation Practices in Academic Journals of Gender and Women’s Studies in Turkiye

    Abdal, Göksenin; Akça, Tuba Ayık

Feminist term translation brings both linguistic and pragmatic sides of translation together and turns the act of translation into a function-driven process rather than a solely form-based transfer. Translators, who join it under different roles such as academics, activists, or field experts, sometimes all at the same time, try to make up for the information loads and contextual definitions regarding the source terms in the target language and culture system with various translation strategies during the process of translation. This study aims to reveal practical tendencies in the feminist term translation activities in academic journals of gender and women’s studies in Turkey. In this respect, feminist term translation practices in selected texts from three journals, namely Feminist Approaches in Culture and Politics [Kültür ve Siyasette Feminist Yaklaşımlar], Kaos Q+, and Feminist Imagination: Journal of Academic Studies [Feminist Tahayyül: Akademik Araştırmalar Dergisi], which have published the most recent translations in the field, will be discussed from a comparative perspective, starting from Istanbul University Journal of Women’s Studies [Istanbul Üniversitesi Kadın Araştırmaları Dergisi], the first academic journal of gender and women’s studies in Turkey. In the analysis, the main focus is on feminist term translation strategies, while an evaluative framework will be drawn on the connections between journals’ areas of focus and feminist term translation practices applied under them.
