Experiences of Transmitting Religious and Cultural Values to Children of Mixed-Marriage Families: The Case of Lancaster, England

    Çoştu, Kamil; Çoştu, Mehmet Davut

The family, as the fundamental institution for the preservation and transmission of religious and cultural values, is the smallest social unit whose importance never diminishes. Islam places great emphasis on the education of children and the acquisition of values, assigning responsibilities to the family. In particular, in mixed marriages involving individuals from different cultural and religious backgrounds, the transmission of religious and moral values to children becomes more complex. This study investigates the experiences of Turkish fathers married to foreign spouses in Lancaster, England, in transmitting Islam and cultural values to their children. Within the framework of lived religion theory, the research focuses on religious transmission practices carried out in the home environment and during special occasions, outside institutional settings such as mosques. Using qualitative research methods, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven Turkish fathers in mixed marriages and three sons aged over 18. Although the data obtained are not sufficient to allow for generalization, they offer important insights into mixed-marriage families. Findings clustered around three main themes: visits to Turkey, tactics regarding Western cultural celebrations such as Christmas and Halloween, and the observance of Ramadan and Eid al- Adha. Accordingly, visits to Turkey are seen as an important opportunity for children to establish a connection with Islam and to strengthen their cultural identity. Traditional practices such as gift- giving, mosque visits, and hand-kissing, particularly during Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, serve as the main tools for transmitting religious and cultural values. The study reveals the unique methods developed by Turkish fathers, who occupy a minority position in England, to transmit religious identity and values to their children, as well as the challenges they face in this process.

An Examination of Bharati Mukherjee's Voice in Turkish within a Postcolonial Context

    Yamanoğlu, Güneş

Postcolonial literature provided a platform for authors who were seriously affected by colonialism to make themselves visible and to make their voices heard through the style as well as the content of their works. Bharati Mukherjee, one of the prominent female postcolonial authors, represents the diaspora in South Asia both through her works and her persona. Just like other post-colonial authors, Mukherjee addresses themes such as migration, identity, hybridity, and the negotiation of meaning in her works. Born in India and later migrating first to Canada and then to America, the author can be considered a ‘cultural translator’. The protagonist of her novel Jasmine, who is searching for her identity throughout the novel, is also a migrant female character living in a ‘third space.’ While the voice of Mukherjee is heard through this novel by English-speaking people, through its Turkish translation, her voice, as a postcolonial subject, can also be heard by Turkish- speaking people. Thus, the role of translation in this context is important. In line with these points, the aim of this article is threefold: 1) To consider the role of Bharati Mukherjee a ‘cultural translator,’ 2) To position the protagonist, along with the author, and the novel itself in a ‘third space,’ and 3) To demonstrate the contribution of the Turkish translation of the novel to creating a space where the author's voice is heard. To this end, the source and target texts are examined comparatively, with special emphasis on realia. As a result, both metaphorical and interlingual translation processes are expected to function as transformative acts that reconstruct identity across languages and cultures, thus enabling the postcolonial subject’s voice to be heard in different sociocultural contexts.

Multilevel Determinants of Household Poverty: A Mixed Effects Logistic Regression Analysis

Güney, tiler Sigeze; Kaya, Zeynep; Balli, Esra

This study investigates the socioeconomic determinants of poverty in Turkey by incorporating household charac teristics with regional indicators using 2024 data using a multilevel mixed effects model. Relative poverty, defined as 60% of the median equivalised household disposable income, serves as the dependent variable. Considering the hierarchical structure of the data, the determinants of poverty status were examined employing a two level generalised mixed effect logistic regression model, accounting for the nesting of households within NUTS 2 regions. The findings reveal that poverty cannot be explained solely by householdlevelvulnerabilities; the regional economic environment also significantly shapes poverty outcomes. Also, education is determined as the most security measure; having a university degree decreases poverty risk by 42.6%. Across regions, resources must be directed towards GDP growth and infrastructure to mitigate spatial disparities by integrating household level microdata with regional macro indicators. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the spatial and key structural factors behind poverty in Turkey. Policymakers should prioritise opportunities to pursue higher education and vocational training at the household level.

Silence in turns: traces of discrimination in different generations of Turkish migrant families in Hamburg (1961–2021)

    Arpacı, Murat

Following the labor agreement signed between Germany and Turkey in 1961, many Turkish families gradually settled in Germany, and narratives of discrimination became ingrained in these families’ histories and intergenerational memories from the very beginning. This study examines how discrimination experienced by families migrating from Turkey to Germany as guest workers was transmitted and manifested across different generations. In-depth interviews were conducted with fourteen members of seven families–including first-generation guest workers and their children–as well as with two teachers who witnessed the second generation’s schooling. The study explores discrimination encountered by different generations within the same families over time, and institutional practices that produced and perpetuated these experiences. The discrimination recounted by the first generation essentially encompasses the medical examinations required to become a guest worker, which also evoke colonial patterns, and the experiences of discrimination they faced in workplaces in Germany. Discrimination reported by second-generation participants occurred in both educational settings and workplaces. The family memory space for this generation’s experiences of discrimination is formed by schools known as Sonderschule. The disproportionately high placement of second-generation immigrant children in these schools–which are primarily for children with learning disabilities and carry exclusionary and stigmatizing connotations–has sparked debates on institutional discrimination. This research addresses the subalternizing effects of both the medical examinations and the Sonderschule system within the collective memory of Turkish guest worker families, manifested in intergenerational shame and silence. It also investigates how this shame and silence are reproduced via institutional mechanisms. As the findings show, individual acts of discrimination are collectively internalized by families, and institutions play a constitutive role in shaping these experiences.

Possibility of Being a Woman Behind Prison Walls: A Study on the Oppression Experiences of Women Correctional Officers in Turkey

    Canalan, Elif; Gökçearslan, Elif

Prison employees, much like the concepts of crime and punishment, are often predominantly associated with men. While the role of correctional officer has become a recognized career option for women, concerns remain about how well prisons accommodate women officers. This study explores the oppression factors experienced by 40 female correctional officers from 26 prisons in Turkey through in-depth interviews using a qualitative approach. The findings reveal significant social, organizational, gender-based, relational, and prison population-related oppressions. In addition to social stigmatization, lack of support, and the pressure to conform to masculine behaviors, female officers face hostility and resistance from inmates, colleagues, and supervisors; this is further reinforced by the hyper-masculine work environment and deeply entrenched patriarchal structures. The study emphasizes the urgent need for gender-sensitive policies and practices within the Turkish criminal justice system, advocating for a more inclusive and equitable work environment to help address entrenched inequalities.

Beyond borders: exemplary culturally diverse policy practices within early childhood teacher education

Altıparmak Cengiz, Nida; Yiğit, Nur Banu; Güvelioğlu, Elif; Tantekin Erden, Feyza

The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) exhibit significant cultural and linguistic diversity. Research conducted in Europe and the US highlights how diversity creates complex teaching environments, often leaving educators insufficiently prepared. Consequently, teacher education has become a paramount area of focus but remains under-investigated within diversity-related contexts. This study analyzes early childhood education (ECE) teacher preparation in the US and UK to evaluate prospects for culturally responsive teaching. Using document analysis, ECE teacher education programs across 18 universities were examined, focusing on diversity in course titles, objectives, and content along with practical strategies for teaching in multicultural environments. Findings showed that, while diversity and inclusion were highlighted in module titles and policy frameworks, practical application often prioritized special education over cultural diversity. Modules specifically addressing migration-related issues were limited, and despite an emphasis on family and community engagement, gaps persisted in preparing teachers to support cultural diversity. Practical teaching experiences in diverse settings were identified as essential for developing culturally responsive practices. It is recommended that integrating comprehensive, mandatory modules on multicultural and multilingual education, alongside practical components, to better equip educators for diverse ECE environments.

Safety and equity in scaling minimally invasive surgery worldwide in 109 countries using cholecystectomy as a tracer procedure: a prospective cohort study

Summary Background: Minimally invasive surgery is rapidly expanding globally, yet there is insufficient knowledge of how to scale this technology safely and equitably across diverse health systems. We aimed to identify health-system factors associated with safe implementation of minimally invasive surgery globally, using minimally invasive cholecystectomy as a tracer procedure. Methods: We conducted a multicentre, prospective cohort study of consecutive adults undergoing cholecystectomy between July 31 and Nov 19, 2023, in 1218 hospitals across 109 countries. Data were collected by more than 10 000 health-care workers using a core measurement set mapped to the WHO Health System Building Blocks and the Global Patient Safety Action Plan. The primary outcome was 30-day procedure-specific complications, with multilevel logistic regression used to examine associations between health-system features and patient outcomes. This study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT06223061). Findings: Among 52 187 included patients, the adjusted procedure-specific complication rate varied 40-fold between hospitals, from 0·3% in the lowest risk quintile to 12·1% in the highest risk quintile. Despite large structural differences across income groups in access to minimally invasive surgery, diagnostics, and emergency services, country income level was not independently associated with complication rates (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0·81 [95% CI 0·59–1·10] for upper-middle income vs high income and 0·99 [0·70–1·39] for lower-middle income or low income vs high income). Three modifiable hospital-level factors were strongly associated with safer outcomes: establishment of local simulation-based training facilities (adjusted OR 0·78 [0·71–0·86]; p<0·0001), adoption of intraoperative safety and communication strategies (0·87 [0·79–0·96]; p=0·0046), and on-site CT diagnostics (0·79 [0·65–0·97]; p=0·0220). Training facilities showed the greatest benefit in hospitals with limited infrastructure and an inexperienced workforce: the number needed to treat to prevent a procedure-specific complication was 21 (95% CI 14–35; p<0·0001). Interpretation: Safe implementation of minimally invasive surgery varies widely worldwide but is not defined by national income level; differences in outcomes reflect the ability of health systems to adopt and safely deploy new surgical techniques. We identified for the first time that the presence of local simulation-based training facilities is independently associated with improved patient outcomes. Simulation appears to be fundamental to the safe delivery of minimally invasive surgery, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Together with safety systems and diagnostic capacity, these findings offer actionable targets for health systems seeking to equitably scale up essential surgical technologies. Funding: NIHR Global Health Research Unit and Wellcome Leap SAVE Programme.

AI In Academic Publishing for Non-Native English Speakers: The Good, the Bot, and the Ugly

Gönülal, Talip; Güçlü, Ramazan; Güçlü, Salih

This exploratory study investigated the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on academic publishing for non-native English-speaking researchers. Through a mixed-methods convergent parallel design, it examined how these scholars utilize AI tools, their perceived benefits, and concerns regarding AI's influence on academic publishing. Data were collected from 105 non-native English-speaking academics coming from 25 language backgrounds. Participants primarily employed AI tools for grammar improvement, writing style enhancement, and translation, while maintaining control over higher-level intellectual tasks such as organizing manuscripts. Three key dimensions of the perceived impact of AI were identified in this study: the good, reducing linguistic inequalities by improving paper quality and decreasing language-related challenges; the bad, involving inaccurate or misleading AI suggestions, over-reliance on AI tools, and diminished engagement with manuscripts; and the ugly, characterized by failure to disclose AI use, lack of clear guidelines for responsible AI integration in research, homogenization of academic writing, and the emergence of new forms of inequality. The study concluded with several recommendations for individual researchers, academic institutions, and publishers and journals to promote the ethical and effective use of AI in academic publishing.

Who Is Ready to Counsel Refugees? Latent Profiles of Prejudice, Labeling, and Counseling Attitudes Among Turkish Counselor Candidates: A Mixture SEM Study

Koc, Muharrem; Ağirkan, Murat; Qin, Sang

This study aimed to explore the associations among Turkish counseling students’ attitudes toward providing psychological counseling to refugees, their multicultural counseling competencies, prejudice against asylum seekers, and tendencies toward labeling refugees. The study group consisted of 362 participants (246 females [68.0%], 116 males [32.0%]) aged 17 to 26 (M=21.1, SD=1.32). Data were analyzed using Mixture Structural Equation Modeling (MSEM), which simultaneously estimated structural relationships among the variables and identified latent subgroups. Results indicated that prejudice against asylum seekers and multicultural counseling competencies were directly associated with attitudes toward giving psychological counseling. Prejudice against asylum seekers and labeling of refugees were directly associated with multicultural counseling competencies, and prejudice against asylum seekers was also directly related to labeling refugees. Indirect associations were also found, including links from prejudice to attitudes via labeling and multicultural counseling competencies. The latent profile component of the MSEM distinguished four subgroups: “Empathetic and Competent Advocates,” “Prejudiced and Disengaged Counselors,” “Reluctant Helpers,” and “Well-Intentioned but Developing.” These findings offer preliminary, education-focused insights into the interplay between prejudice, multicultural counseling competencies, refugee labeling, and attitudes toward psychological counseling among Turkish counseling students, and suggest that targeted counselor-education strategies may help reduce prejudice, strengthen multicultural competencies, and improve attitudes toward working with asylum seekers and refugees.

Agaoglu, Ferhat Onur; Bas, Murat; Tarsuslu, Sinan; Ekinci, Lokman Onur

Background: Increasing workload and difficult working conditions among doctors in Turkey may cause professional dissatisfaction and a perception of victimization. The emerging adverse conditions require a more in-depth examination of the factors affecting doctors’ migration tendencies. This study examines the mediating role of job dissatisfaction and the moderating role of perceived career opportunities on the effect of perceived victimization on migration intention among Turkish doctors. Methodology: In the study, the surveys obtained from 453 doctors were included in the analysis. Simple random sampling method was used in this descriptive-relational and cross-sectional study. Results: It was found that doctors’ perception of victimization has a significant and positive effect on their willingness to migrate. Also, job dissatisfaction plays a mediating role in the perception of victimization and willingness to migrate. In addition, it was found that perceived career opportunity has a moderating effect on the relationship between the perception of victimization and willingness to migrate and that perceived career opportunity has a situational mediating role in the mediating role of job dissatisfaction. Conclusion: The research contributes to the literature by examining the relationship between victimisation, career opportunity, and job dissatisfaction that affect the willingness of doctors to migrate. In addition, it provides recommendations on a current issue due to the treatment of physician migration, which is on Turkey’s agenda.Implementing strategies to reduce doctors’ perception of victimization, increase job satisfaction, and enhance career opportunities is critical to reducing their propensity to migrate, and some solutions are suggested for practitioners.

Nonlinear effects of financial development on energy infrastructure: Insights from nonlinear panel models

Helmi, Mohamad Husam; Balli, Esra; Çatik, Abdurrahman Nazif; Kuziboev, Bekhzod; Ruzmetova, Maxbuba; Makhmudov, Samariddin

This study examines the impact of financial development on energy infrastructure needs in a sample of 85 countries over the period 2000–2023. The analysis combines linear panel estimators with advanced nonlinear methods, including Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR), the Instrumental-Variable Partially Linear Functional-Coefficient model (IVPLFC), and the dose–response function. These methods allow us to examine heterogeneity, dynamic persistence, and nonlinear marginal effects. A key contribution of the study is the use of the Energy Infrastructure Needs index, which captures deficiencies across electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and storage, rather than relying on narrower traditional proxies. The results show that stronger financial development significantly reduces energy infrastructure needs. This effect is strongest at earlier stages of financial development, while diminishing marginal effects emerge as financial systems mature. The MMQR results reveal distributional differences across levels of energy infrastructure needs, while the IVPLFC and dose–response results confirm clear nonlinear effects. Overall, the findings show that financial development plays an important but uneven role in reducing energy infrastructure needs. Financially underdeveloped economies benefit most from expanding access to credit, strengthening banking intermediation, and improving liquidity, whereas more financially developed economies require complementary institutional and regulatory reforms to achieve further progress.

Living with Retinitis Pigmentosa in Türkiye: Diagnosis, Independence, and Access to Care

    Gürsoy, Nurcan; Gürsoy, Ersan

Background: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a progressive inherited retinal dystrophy that affects daily functioning, psychological well-being, and social participation. Although quantitative research describes disease burden, less is known about how individuals experience progressive vision loss in everyday life and within healthcare and social contexts. Methods: This qualitative study used semi-structured face-to-face interviews with adults diagnosed with RP. Purposive sampling was applied to ensure variation in demographic and clinical characteristics. Interviews were conducted in a tertiary ophthalmology clinic in Erzincan, Türkiye, between June and October 2025. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis. Reporting followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Sixteen participants (P1–P16) were included. Five themes were identified: (1) making sense of the illness and the diagnostic journey; (2) functional loss and the negotiation of independence; (3) psychological adaptation and identity reconstruction; (4) social relationships and social encounters; and (5) interaction with systems and the environment—accessibility and healthcare. Participants described early symptom normalization, delayed diagnostic pathways, and uncertainty persisting after diagnosis. Independence was shaped by safety concerns, environmental barriers, and reliance on support. Psychological adjustment fluctuated between fear of progression and efforts to sustain resilience. Social participation was influenced by support networks, concerns about being a burden, and stigma linked to invisible disability. Conclusions: Living with RP extends beyond visual impairment; building on prior qualitative work, our findings contextualize these experiences in Türkiye, highlighting how accessibility gaps, bureaucratic encounters in public institutions, and cost barriers within healthcare and public services can shape uncertainty, independence, and social participation.

The Cultural Integration Experiences of Syrian Migrants in Turkey: A Qualitative Study on Belonging, Adaptation, and Intercultural Communication

    Hancığaz, Erhan

This study examines how Syrian migrants in Turkey—who generally have temporary protection status—adapt to their new environment, focusing on their sense of belonging, social acceptance, and social interaction. In this research, acculturation is considered not only as a one-way adaptation process but also as a multidimensional and mutually evaluated process that emerges through various variables such as the relationships migrants establish with the host society, their intercultural communication experiences, and their daily life practices. The study, conducted using a qualitative research design, is based on data obtained from in-depth interviews with semi-structured questions conducted with 20 Syrian migrants who have resided in various cities in Turkey for at least 5 years. The data emerging from the interviews were analyzed using descriptive-thematic analysis. The findings reveal that positive social contact and interaction within the social structure reinforce the sense of belonging; conversely, discrimination, exposure to exclusion, and legal uncertainty negatively affect acculturation processes. The study contributes to the literature by providing a context-sensitive analysis of acculturation, emphasizing the role of social interaction, belonging, and social acceptance in shaping migrants’ experiences.

Understanding Justice at Work: The Interplay of Social Comparison and Psychological Contract in the Healthcare Industry

Ak, Murat; Turkmenoglu, Mehmet Ali; Uysal, Hasan Tezcan; Kilickaya, Fatma Yilmaz; Bilgic, Emrah

The healthcare sector is characterized by high stress, irregular working conditions, and continuous performance pressure, which increase employees’ sensitivity to workplace fairness and peer evaluation. Within this context, the way employees compare themselves to other colleagues and how employees interpret their psychological contracts with their employers become worth examining. Drawing on Equity Theory and Social Exchange Theory, our study aims to examine how social comparison affects healthcare employees’ perceptions of organizational justice and to reveal the mediating role of the psychological contract in this relationship. Data were collected from 364 healthcare employees in Türkiye. Validity, reliability, and correlation analyses were conducted, and a structural equation model was established based on the collected data. The results indicate that social comparison has a positive effect on both organizational justice and the psychological contract, and the psychological contract also positively affects organizational justice. Accordingly, the psychological contract partially mediates the relationship between social comparison and organizational justice. Hence, our study extends the extant literature by identifying the psychological contract as a mediating cognitive mechanism linking social comparison and justice perceptions. Practical implications are offered to healthcare managers and organizations to promote fairness and engagement among staff.

Understanding the challenges of international student integration: A qualitative study of faculty and administrator perspectives in Turkish higher education

Çetinkaya, Bünyamin; Çiftci, Zeynep; Demir, Abdullah; Gülaçtı, Fikret; Göksu, Yeliz Tiryaki

Türkiye's strategic geopolitical position has made it a growing destination for international students, yet higher education institutions face persistent challenges in supporting their integration. This qualitative case study examined the perspectives of 20 participants (13 faculty members and 7 administrators) from two public universities regarding institutional challenges and support strategies related to international student integration. Employing semi-structured interviews analyzed through thematic analysis, four interconnected challenge domains were identified: (i) language and communication barriers, (ii) academic adjustment, (iii) social adaptation, and (iv) legal and bureaucratic obstacles. Findings reveal that while faculty and administrators have developed a range of responsive practices, many remain informal and dependent on individual initiative rather than anchored in coordinated institutional policy. The study underscores the need for equity-oriented, system-level internationalization strategies in non-Anglophone contexts, and contributes to understanding integration as an organizational process mediated by institutional actors rather than solely a student-level adjustment challenge.
