Objectives: We aimed to assess the effect of Hippophae rhamnoides extract (HR) on oxidative stress induced by cisplatin (Cis) in rat small intestine tissue by evaluating the biochemical and gene expression levels and histopathological changes. Materials and methods: The control group and Cis group received distilled water, while the HR25+cisplatin (HR25+Cis) group and the HR50+cisplatin (HR50+Cis) group were given HR 25 and 50 mg/kg, respectively, orally for seven days. HR25+Cis, HR50+Cis, Cis groups were injected with a single dose of intraperitoneal cisplatin on the first day. After sacrifice, the jejunum of each rat was removed for the assessment of oxidants and antioxidants. Analyses of the gene expression (for IL-1ß and TNF-α) and histopathological changes evaluated. Results: HR significantly inhibited the increase of oxidants and the decrease of antioxidants caused by cisplatin in the jejunal tissue. IL-1β and TNF-α gene expression levels were almost the same in both the HR50+Cis and the control groups. HR better prevented increase of the serum levels of IL-1β and TNF-α in animals at 50 mg/kg dose compared to 25 mg/kg dose. We confirmed that HR prevented the histopathological changes caused by cisplatin. Conclusions: It was concluded that oxidative stress caused by cisplatin may be preventable by co-administered HR.

Background & objectives : Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), an illness characterized by fever and hemorrhage, is caused by a CCHF virus (CCHFV). It is an important public health problem in Turkey. The objective of this study was to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics and mortality rates of CCHF patients in the northeast region of Turkey. Methods : A total of 206 patients, diagnosed with CCHF, from northeast region of Turkey were included and evaluated between 2011 and 2017. Real-Time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunofluorescence (IFA) methods were used for the diagnoses. Results : Of the patients included in the study, 77.2% were farmers/livestockers, while 22.8% had other occupations. The incidence of tick bite or tick contact with bare hands was 52.9%. About 94.2% of the patients were living in rural areas and 5.8% in city centers. However, all the patients living in city centers had a history of visit to rural areas. The disease was more common in May, June, and July months. The most common symptoms at the time of admission included fatigue, fever, and widespread body pain, while laboratory findings were thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and anemia. Bleeding, tachycardia, and rash were the most common findings on physical examination. Of all the patients, 95.6% were identified by RT-PCR and 4.4% by IFA methods. Severe cases constituted 22.3% (46) of the included patients. Throughout the course of this study, 7 (3.4%) patients died, and the remaining 96.6% (199) patients were discharged with a full recovery. Disease severity was significantly correlated with mortality rate and duration of hospitalization (p <0.001 and p = 0.013). Interpretation & conclusion : In this study, the mortality rate observed was lower than that reported in the literature because of accessibility of early supportive therapy. It would be beneficial in CCHF treatment to recognize the disease at an early stage, begin supportive treatment quickly, and educate the people living in high-risk areas as well as health care personnel working in these areas.

Background. Oxidative stress and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) have been reported to play a role in the pathogenesis of nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin. Objectives. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of anakinra, which is an IL-1β receptor antagonist, on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats, through biochemical, gene expression and histopathological analyses. Material and methods. The study was designed with 4 groups. For 1 week, the control group (C) and the cisplatin (Cis) group received distilled water, while the cisplatin + anakinra 50 (Cis + ANA50) group and the cisplatin + anakinra 100 (Cis + ANA100) group were intraperitoneally administered 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg of anakinra, respectively. The Cis, Cis + ANA50 and Cis + ANA100 groups were intraperitoneally injected with a 2.5 mg/kg dose of cisplatin for 7 days. After sacrifice, the kidney tissue of each rat was extracted for the assessment of the malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione (tGSH) levels, and for gene expression analyses of IL-1β. The kidney tissues were histopathologically evaluated. Statistical analyses of the data were performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results. The administration of cisplatin (the Cis group) yielded a higher level of MDA (4.75 ±0.25 nmol/mL; p < 0.001) and lower levels of tGSH (1.80 ±0.35 mg/L; p < 0.001) compared to other groups. Cisplatin also increased IL-1β gene expression (6.33 ±0.27 gene expression levels; p < 0.001) compared to other groups. The impact of anakinra on the MDA and tGSH levels, and on IL-1β gene expression induced by cisplatin was observed as a reversal of these findings (p < 0.05). Anakinra better prevented an increase of the levels of MDA and IL-1β at a dose of 100 mg/kg compared to a 50 mg/kg dose. Conclusions. Anakinra prevents oxidative kidney damage induced by cisplatin in a dose-dependent manner. This result suggests that anakinra may be useful in the treatment of cisplatin-induced kidney damage.

Introduction: Chronic inflammation is a major risk factor in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is the true visceral fat depot of the heart. The relationship between coronary artery disease and EAT was shown in healthy subjects and ESRD patients. In the present study we aimed to investigate the relationship between EAT and inflammation parameters including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Material and methods: Forty-three HD patients (25 females, 18 males; mean age: 64.1 ± 11.9 years) receiving HD and 30 healthy subjects (15 females, 15 males; mean age: 59.1 ±10.8 years) were enrolled in the study. Epicardial adipose tissue measurements were performed by echocardiography. Results: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio levels were significantly higher in HD patients than in the healthy control group. Hemodialysis patients were separated into two groups according to their median value of NLR (group 1, NLR < 3.07 (n = 21) and group 2, NLR . 3.07 (n = 22)). Group 2 patients had significantly higher EAT, C-reactive protein and ferritin levels, while albumin levels were significantly lower in this group. In the bivariate correlation analysis, EAT was positively correlated with NLR (r = 0.600, p < 0.001) and ferritin (r = 0.485, p = 0.001) levels. Conclusions: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was found to be an independent predictor of EAT in HD patients (odds ratio = 3.178; p = 0.008). We concluded that this relationship might be attributed to increased inflammation in uremic patients.

In this study, the impact of nimesulide on oxidative stress induced by cisplatin in rat duodenum and jejunum tissue was assessed by evaluating the biochemical and histopathological changes. The rats in the study were assigned to three groups: the control group and cisplatin (Cis) group were given distilled water, and the nimesulide + cisplatin (Nim + Cis) group was given nimesulide (50 mg/kg) orally for seven days. The Cis and Nim + Cis groups were injected with a single dose of intraperitoneal cisplatin (6 mg/kg) on the first day. After the rats were euthanized, the duodenum and jejunum of each rat was removed for the assessment of biochemical markers and histopathological evaluation. Cisplatin administration in the Cis group resulted in increased levels of malondialdehyde and nitric oxide and decreased levels of total glutathione, glutathione reductase, and catalase compared to the healthy and Nim + Cis groups. Nimesulide significantly inhibited the increase of oxidants (p < 0.001) and the decrease of antioxidants caused by cisplatin (p < 0.001). Inflammation, damage to the villus epithelium, hemorrhage, and capillary proliferation were determined histopathologically in the Cis group. The results of this study indicate that oxidative stress caused by cisplatin may be preventable by co-administered nimesulide.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most common nutritional disorders in the world. In the present study, we evaluated erythrocyte membrane fatty acid composition in premenopausal patients with IDA. Blood samples of 102 premenopausal women and 88 healthy control subjects were collected. After the erythrocytes were separated from the blood samples, the membrane lipids were carefully extracted, and the various membrane fatty acids were measured by gas chromatography (GC). Statistical analyses were performed with the SPSS software program. We used blood ferritin concentration <15 ng/mL as cut-off for the diagnosis of IDA. The five most abundant individual fatty acids obtained were palmitic acid (16:0), oleic acid (18:1, n-9c), linoleic acid (18:2, n-6c), stearic acid (18:0), and erucic acid (C22:1, n-9c). These compounds constituted about 87% of the total membrane fatty acids in patients with IDA, and 79% of the total membrane fatty acids in the control group. Compared with control subjects, case patients had higher percentages of palmitic acid (29.9% case versus 25.3% control), oleic acid (16.8% case versus 15.1% control), and stearic acid (13.5% case versus 10.5% control), and lower percentages of erucic acid (11.5% case versus 13.6% control) and linoleic acid (15.2% case versus 15.4% control) in their erythrocyte membranes. In conclusion, the total-erythrocyte-membrane saturated fatty acid (SFA) composition in premenopausal women with IDA was found to be higher than that in the control group; however, the totalerythrocyte- membrane unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) composition in premenopausal women with IDA was found to be lower than that in the control group. The differences in these values were statistically significant.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to evaluate the total atrial conduction time and its relationship to subclinical atherosclerosis, inflammation and echocardiographic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A total of 132 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (mean age 54.5¡9.6 years; 57.6% male) and 80 age-and gender-matched controls were evaluated. The total atrial conduction time was measured by tissue-Doppler imaging and the carotid intima-media thickness was measured by B-mode ultrasonography. RESULTS: The total atrial conduction time was significantly longer in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus than in the control group (131.7¡23.6 vs. 113.1¡21.3, p,0.001). The patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus had significantly increased carotid intima-media thicknesses, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios and high-sensitivity Creactive protein levels than those of the controls. The total atrial conduction time was positively correlated with the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, carotid intima-media thickness and left atrial volume index and negatively correlated with the early diastolic velocity (Em), Em/late diastolic velocity (Am) ratio and global peak left atrial longitudinal strain. A multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, carotid intima-media thickness and global peak left atrial longitudinal strain were independent predictors of the total atrial conduction time. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that subclinical atherosclerosis and inflammation may represent a mechanism related to prolonged total atrial conduction time and that prolonged total atrial conduction time and impaired left atrial myocardial deformation may be represent early subclinical cardiac involvement in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in hematological parameters as predictors of endothelial dysfunction and inflammation. The aim of our study is to evaluate the relationship between HbA1c and hematological indices, and to evaluate the relationship between these parameters and microvascular complications of diabetes. Three hundred and seven diabetic patients (124 male, 183 female; mean age 50.8±8.5), and 187 controls (76 male, 111 female; mean age 51.1±10.1) were included in the study. In the diabetic group, mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet distribution width (PDW), white blood cell count (WBC), platelet count, platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significantly higher than the control group (P<0.05). Diabetic patients were divided into two group according to their HbA1c levels (Group 1; HbA1c <7 (n=82) and group 2; HbA1c ≥7 (n=225)). Mean platelet volume, PCT and PDW levels were significantly increased in group 2. Mean platelet volume was significantly increased in diabetic patients with retinopathy compared to those without retinopathy (P=0.006). The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and PLR levels were significantly higher in patients with nephropathy (P=0.004, P=0.004 respectively). There was statistically significant difference of lymphocyte count between patients with and without neuropathy. In correlation analysis, positive correlation between HbA1c and PCT (rs=0.192, P<0.001), HbA1c and PDW (rs=0.305, P<0.001), HbA1c and MPV (rs=0.352, P<0.001) were determined. In binary logistic regression analysis; WBC, PDW and PLR levels were found to be independently associated with diagnosis of diabetes while WBC, MPV, PLR and NLR levels were found to be independently associated with impaired glucose regulation. This study demonstrates that altered hematological indices are closely associated with HbA1c levels in individuals with and without diabetes and some of these parameters are associated with diabetic microvascular complications. These associations may be explained by connection between these easy accessible and inexpensive hematological indices and inflammation, tendency to coagulation and thrombosis in patients with diabetes.

It is known that ketamine increases the production of catecholamines, causing oxidative damage to the heart. Suppression of the production of catecholamines by disulfiram, a drug with antioxidant properties, indicates that disulfiram may decrease ketamine-induced cardiotoxicity. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of disulfiram on ketamine-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Disulfiram was administered by oral gavage in doses of 25 mg/kg to rats in the DK-25 group and 50 mg/kg to rats in the DK-50 group. Distilled water was applied in the ketamine control (KC) and healthy (HG) rat groups. At one hour after drug administration and subsequently at ten-minute intervals, a 60 mg/kg dose of ketamine was intraperitoneally injected in the rats in all groups other than HG, and anesthesia was maintained for three hours. Disulfiram prevented both increase in the levels of parameters indicating oxidative and myocardial damage and decrease of antioxidant levels in the heart tissue with ketamine in a dose-dependent manner. Disulfiram better prevented occurrence of cardiotoxicity with ketamine in the 50 mg/kg dose than in the 25 mg/kg dose. It is concluded that disulfiram may usefully be applied in clinical practice in the prevention of cardiotoxicity as observed during anesthesia with ketamine.

Vascular calcifcation and increased oxidative stress are commonly seen in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Nitrotyrosine is one of the end products of nitric oxide metabolism and is accepted as an indicator of oxidative stress. Nitrotyrosine levels have been found to be high in ESRD patients. The aim of our study is to investigate the relation between coronary artery calcifcation and oxidative stress in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients. 46 PD and 34 HD patients are included in the study. Coronary artery calcifcation scoring (CACS) is made by multi slice computed tomography. Patients are divided into 4 groups according to their CACS values as Group 1 (CACS: 0), Group 2 (CACS:1-99), Group 3 (CACS:100-399) and Group 4 (CACS: ≥400). Serum nitrotyrosine levels were measured. Nitrotyrosine levels were signifcantly increased in HD patients compared to PD patients. Nitrotyrosine levels were found to be elevated in accordance with increased CACS in PD patients. However, we could not fnd this relationship in HD patients. There might be an important relationship between CACS and oxidative stress in PD patients.

In this study, the in vivo effects of two proton pump inhibitors - rabeprazole and esomeprazole - on enzyme activities of red blood cell enzymes, including glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and glutathione reductase, were investigated. In the first part of our study, activities of these enzymes in the group of patients diagnosed with reflux were compared with the enzyme activities of the voluntary individual group with no health problems (control group). No significant difference was found between the groups for glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase enzymes (p > 0.05). However, the level of glutathione reductase increased in reflux patients, as compared to healthy controls (p < 0.05). Additionally, the enzyme activities of the patient group members who used esomeprazole or rabeprazole for a 1-month-treatment were compared with the values obtained when these patients initially consulted our clinic. No significant difference was found between the groups for the three enzymes (p>0.05).

The effect of resveratrol on the damage induced by methotrexate (MTX) in rat duodenum and jejunum tissue was investigated and evaluated in comparison with famotidine. The rats were divided into four groups as healthy group (HG), resveratrol+MTX (RMTX) group, famotidine+MTX (FMTX) group and the control group which received MTX (MTXC). RMTX group was given resveratrol 25 mg/kg and FMTX group famotidin 25 mg/kg, while MTXC and HG groups were orally administered distilled water once a day for 30 days. The rats in RMTX, FMTX and MTXC groups were given MTX of 5 mg/kg dose by the same way for 30 days. At the end of this period, amount of MDA, 8-OH/Gua and tGSH, and MPO gene expression were measured in the duodenal and jejunal tissues and the results were histopathologically evaluated. Resveratrol and famotidine were found to significantly prevent elevation of the MDA, 8-OH/Gua and MPO parameters with MTX and decrease of the levels of tGSH in the duodenal and jejunal tissues. Both drugs prevented severe damage to the villus and crypt epithelium in the duodenum and jejunum, congestion and hemorrhage, inflammatory cell infiltration and necrosis in the mucosa and submucosa due to MTX administration. Resveratrol could be considered in the clinical practice for treatment of the tissue damage in the intestines due to use of MTX, in comparison with famotidine. Resveratrol may be more advantageous than famotidine in long-term use against MTX toxicity since it does not inhibit gastric acid secretion.

Chronic inflammation was found to be correlated with coronary (CAC) and thoracic peri-aortic calcification (TAC) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was introduced as a potential marker to determine inflammation in cardiac and noncardiac disorders. Data regarding NLR and its association with TAC and CAC are lacking. We aimed to determine the relationship between NLR and vascular calcification in ESRD patients. This was a cross-sectional study involving 56 ESRD patients (22 females, 34 males; mean age, 49.9±14.2 years) receiving peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis for ≥6 months in the Dialysis Unit of Necmettin Erbakan University. TAC and CAC scores were measured by using an electrocardiogram-gated 64-multidetector computed tomography. NLR was calculated as the ratio of the neutrophils and lymphocytes. There was a statistically significant correlation between NLR, TACS and CACS in ESRD patients (r=0.43, P=0.001 and r=0.30, P=0.02, respectively). The stepwise linear regression analysis revealed that age, as well as NLR were independent predictors of TACS. However, increased age was the only independent predictor of CACS according to linear regression analysis. Simple calculation of NLR can predict vascular calcification in ESRD patients.

Objective: Impact of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) on fertility may be negative, and ovarian function can be also reduced by autoimmune oophoritis. In this article, we evaluated the ovarian reserve of pre-menopausal women firstly diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: This was a prospective controlled study which included twenty women with SLE and twenty healthy women as controls in the reproductive age. Basal levels of FSH, estradiol (E2), and LH on cycle day 3 were measured. All participants underwent transvaginal ultrasonographic examination on the third day of their menstrual periods for the determination of ovarian volume (OV) and total antral follicle count (AFC). Results: A significant difference in FSH, LH, and E2 levels was observed between women with SLE and healthy controls. There was a statistically significant reduction in total AFC and OV in SLE group. Age was associated negatively with AFC, whereas positively with FSH and LH. Menstrual irregularity was significantly higher in SLE patients than control. AFC was the most reliable test to show the menstrual irregularity and negatively correlated each other in women with SLE. Conclusion: In this preliminary study, the first in SLE patients, we illustrated that women with SLE had lower ovarian reserves and higher menstrual irregularity compared with healthy controls according to hormonal and ultrasonographical evaluation.

Background and Objective: Iron is an essential element that is necessary for all cells in the body. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most common nutritional disorders in both developed and developing countries. The glutathione pathway is paramount to antioxidant defense and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)-deficient cells do not cope well with oxidative damage. The goal of this study was to check the activities of G6PD, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase in patients with IDA. Methods: We analyzed the plasma samples of 102 premenopausal women with IDA and 88 healthy control subjects. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase activity as compared to the reduction of NADP +, glutathione reductase activity was performed based on the oxidation of NADPH. 2 ml of plasma were used in all analyzes. SPSS program was used for all of the statistical analysis. Result: Diagnosis of iron deficiency in patients belonging to the analysis of blood were ferritin 3.60 ± 2.7 ng / mL, hemoglobin 9.4 ± 1.5 mg / dl and hematocrit 30.7 ± 4.1% ratio; in healthy subjects ferritin 53.5 ± 41.7 ng/ml, hemoglobin level 13.9 ± 1.3 mg / dl and hematocrit ratio 42 ± 3.53%. When compared to healthy subjects the glutathione reductase level (P < 0.001) was found to be significantly higher in patients with IDA. IDA patients with moderate and severe anemia had lower GR activity when compared to IDA patients with mild anemia. But the plasma levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (P<0,600) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (P < 0.671) did not show any differences between healthy subjects and in patients with IDA. Conclusion: It was shown that Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase and 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase have no effect on iron-deficiency anemia in patients. The plasma GR levels of premenopausal women with IDA were found to be higher compared to healthy subjects, which could be secondary to erythrocyte protection against oxidative stress being commonly seen in IDA.

Background: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), visceral fat depot of the heart, was found to be associated with coronary artery disease in cardiac and non-cardiac patients. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were introduced as potential markers to determine inflammation in various disorders. Recently, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) was found to be closely associated with atherosclerosis in general population. Waist circumference is commonly used to assess the risk factors in various metabolic disorders. There has been a well known relation between inflammation and peripheral adipose tissue in diabetes mellitus. However, the data regarding EAT and inflammation is scant in this population. Hence, we aimed to determine the relationship between PLR, NLR, AIP, waist circumference and EAT in diabetic patients. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study involving 156 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (87 females, 69 males; mean age, 53.62 ± 9.33 years) and 50 control subjects (35 females, 15 males; mean age, 51.06 ± 8.74 years). EAT was measured by using a trans-thoracic echocardiogram. Atherogenic index of plasma was calculated as the logarithmically transformed ratio of the serum triglyceride to high density lipoprotein (HDL)cholesterol. NLR and PLR were calculated as the ratio of the neutrophils and platelets to lymphocytes, respectively. Results: Waist circumference, PLR, NLR, AIP and EAT measurements were significantly higher in diabetic patients when compared to control subjects. When diabetic patients were separated into two groups according to their median value of EAT (Group 1, EAT < 4.53 (n = 78) and group 2, EAT ≥4.53 (n = 78)), group 2 patients had significantly higher Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, AIP, NLR and PLR levels. In the bivariate correlation analysis, EAT was positively correlated with PLR, NLR, AIP, BMI and waist circumference (r = 0.197, p = 0.014; r = 0.229, p = 0.004; r = 0.161, p = 0.044; r = 0.248, p = 0.002; r = 0.306, p < 0.001, respectively). Waist circumference was found to be independent variables of EAT. Background: The relationship between diabetic nephropathy, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and inflammation has been shown. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are simple, inexpensive, and useful markers to determine inflammation. However, to date, in the literature, there have been no studies demonstrating the relationship between epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), inflammation, and albuminuria. Aims: We aimed to investigate the association between diabetic nephropathy, NLR, and PLR as inflammatory markers and EAT thickness. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 200 diabetic patients. The patients were separated into three groups according to their albuminuria levels. The NLR and PLR were calculated from a complete blood count. EAT was measured by transthoracic echocardiography. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated by the modification of diet in renal disease (MDRD) equation. Results: Disease duration, EAT, creatinine, NLR, PLR, absolute neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet count tended to increase with increasing albuminuria while the eGFR decreased. When patients were separated into two groups according to NLR and PLR medians, albuminuria levels increased with an increase of the NLR (p = 0.003) and PLR (p = 0.009). A correlation analysis showed that albuminuria was significantly correlated with EAT, disease duration, creatinine, eGFR, PLR, and NLR levels. Additionally, in a binary logistic regression analysis, EAT, NLR, and PLR were found to be independently associated with albuminuria. Conclusions: Determining various inflammatory cytokines and measuring abdominal VAT in diabetic patients is complex and expensive. Simply measuring EAT and calculating NLR and PLR can predict inflammation and albuminuria in patients with diabetes.

Background: The associations of serum uric acid (UA), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and albuminuria with cardiovascular disease have been shown. Several studies focused on association of serum UA and dyslipidemia, serum UA and renal impairment, dyslipidemia and renal impairment. However, to date, in literature, there have been no studies demonstrating the relationship between these parameters in diabetic patients together. Aims: We aimed to investigate the association between serum UA, albuminuria and AIP in diabetic patients. Methods: This was a retrospective study involving data of 645 diabetic patients. The patients were separated into groups according to their serum uric acid and AIP levels. The quantitative urine albumin/creatinine ratio in morning spot urine samples were used for standard albuminuria determination. Serum uric acid levels under 6 mg/dL were considered as normal. AIP was calculated as the logarithmically transformed ratio of triglyceride to high density lipoprotein cholesterol. Results: AIP and albuminuria levels were high in high serum UA group compared to normal UA group. Uric acid and albuminuria tended to increase with increasing AIP. Correlation analysis showed that albuminuria, AIP and UA were significantly correlated with each other. Additionally, in binary logistic regression analysis, AIP was found to be independently associated with high UA levels. Conclusions: Present study reveals that serum UA, AIP and albuminuria are closely related. Physicians should be aware that patients with concomitant hyperuricemia, albuminuria and high AIP are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Our study confirms that there is a need for larger prospective studies to determine the mechanisms underlying the association of serum UA, AIP and albuminuria.
