RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2026Investigation of production and performance evaluation of high-strength lightweight concrete (HSLWC) produced with regional volcanic aggregates (RVA)
Ulusu, İsmet; Ulusu, Hayati; Gül, Rüstem
This study investigates the feasibility of producing high-strength lightweight concrete using regional volcanic aggregate (RVA) and examines the performance of the produced concrete. Various mix designs conforming to ASTM and TS EN standards were applied to achieve the targeted strength and density. The study also investigated the effect of water/cement ratio (W/C) and cement content on the mechanical and physical properties of high-strength lightweight concrete. Experimental tests such as compressive strength, tensile strength, density, water absorption, and elastic modulus were conducted to determine the effect of cement content and lightweight aggregate on the overall behavior of the concrete. To ensure adequate workability, superplasticizer was added to all mixes at a rate of 1.5% of the cement weight. The slump values of fresh concrete met modern requirements for good workability, pumpability, and high strength. The results showed that, provided a superplasticizer is used, high-strength concrete with a density range of 1830 to 1915 kg/m³ can be produced using 450 kg/m³ of cement. The results show that the porous structure and pozzolanic properties of RVA significantly increase the mechanical strength of concrete and, thanks to its porous structure, reduce its unit weight by 20–25%. The highest compressive strength recorded within 90 days for a mixture containing 650 kg/m³ of cement was 87 MPa. It was concluded that the W/C ratio and cement content have a significant effect on the mechanical and physical properties of these concretes.

The main causes of damage include poor site selection, such as building on fault lines or on fill soil, as well as deficiencies in design, materials, and workmanship. Damage levels are also linked to the economic conditions of the region. In the 1939 earthquake, there were high casualties due to the magnitude of the earthquake, lack of engineering design in traditional structures and unsuitable soil conditions. Similarly, in the 1992 earthquake, unexpected damage occurred due to faulty designs created by inexperienced engineers who lacked sufficient knowledge of the seismic behavior of structures, errors in craftsmanship and workmanship, and unsuitable residential area selection for construction. These problems continue today and put most of the building stock at risk in case of a major earthquake. Seismic steel isolators are used in two new buildings in the city; if they are effective, they should be made mandatory in new construction. Otherwise, consideration should be given to relocating the city to the more stable southern rocky areas, which were unaffected in both 1939 and 1992.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2023Effect of Expanded Perlite Aggregate Plaster on the Behavior of High-Temperature Reinforced Concrete Structures
Ulusu, İsmet; Kurnuç Seyhan, Aslıhan
Polyurethane-based materials, which are widely used in exterior cladding, pose a great risk for buildings because they can easily catch fire at temperatures as low as 50–65 °C. Thus, different materials are needed to ensure that structures exposed to high temperatures do not have any stability problems. In this study, expanded perlite aggregate plaster (EPAP) was produced to eliminate the negative effects that may occur in buildings exposed to high temperatures. High temperature tests were carried out on test plates of different thicknesses to determine the effect of plaster thickness under high temperatures. In order to compare the effects of high temperatures, a test sample of normal aggregate plaster (NAP), which is widely used in buildings, was prepared. In the high temperature test, the temperature values on the back surfaces of the EPAP (≈115 °C) test plates were approximately 3 times lower than the temperature values of the NAP (≈350 °C) test plate. It can be said that structural stability loss and durability problems may occur in structures covered with NAP in a high-temperature environment, and that no negative effect will occur in terms of structural stability and durability problems in structures covered with EPAP in high temperature environments.

Given the fact that 35 % of total energy is consumed in buildings and % 80 of that energy is used as heating purposes, it is of importance that heating isolation material applied to buildings as well as more efficient heating systems set up in buildings provides large energy savings. Providing desired performance in heating isolation is directly correlated to properties of heating isolation material along with to thoroughly complying to application techniques of isolation materials. Expanded perlit is considered to be alternative heating isolation material because it has close isolation values to that of other isolation materials, and its lifetime approaches to infinity due to its puzolanik features gaining strength with time, and it prevents heat bridges as isolation process is done as whole in layer, and it has high fire durability, sound isolation, and it prevents the formation of vapor between wall and plaster surface and so that prevents mold and bacteria with the help of breathing the air, and it doesn`t emit harmful chemical substance due to fact that it is natural. In this study, an experimental room was made in Erzincan province and compared the thermal insulation performance of perlite, which is the most widely used thermal insulation material today, with expanded EPS. As a result of the evaluation of the received measurement data, it has been determined that 8 cm expanded perlite and 6 cm EPS thermal insulation material have equal thermal insulation capacity.

Yılmaz, Demet; Uzunoğlu, Zeynep; Ulusu, İsmet; Akaltun, Yunus
The development of technology increases the environmental pollution and radiological effects. In the presentwork, the radiation effects were determined experimentally, in the high strength lightweight concreteaccording to water /cement ratio. Also, the mass attenuation coefficients of the high strength lightweightconcrete samples which producing with perlite aggregate were determined. The measurements wereperformed using a high-purity germanium detector. Ten different gamma rays energies were used. It isobserved that the mass attenuation coefficients of the concrete samples are decreasing with the increasingphoton energies. The concrete obtained with perlite aggregate can be used for protect from the radiation.
