Ertugay, Neşe; Kocakaplan, Nihal; Malkoç, Emine
In this study, effect of pH by Fenton-like with zero-valent iron (ZVI) process, advanced oxidation process in the leachate treatment, was investigated. The effect of pH value on colour and COD removal from leachate was determined at five initial pH values, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 (ZVI = 0.05 g/L, H2O2 = 150 mg/L). The highest colour and COD yield were obtained at pH 2.0. The colour removal was 87.9% (in 620 nm wavelength) and the COD removal was 74%. Experimental data from COD degradation with the Fenton-like process were analysed by using the zero-, first-, second-order and BMG kinetic models.

Kardaş, Faruk; Beytur, Murat; Akyıldırım, Onur; Yüksek, Haydar; Yola, Mehmet Lütfi; Atar, Necip
In the present report, a new voltammetric sensor based on copper oxide nanoparticles involved in 2-(3-acetoxy-4-methoxybenzylidenamino)-thiophenol (AMT) ionic liquid (CuO NPs/ILs) was developed for atrazine (ATR) analysis. Firstly, the CuO NPs/ILs modified surface was investigated by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The linearity range and the detection limit (LOD) of the prepared sensor were calculated as 1.0 × 10− 11–2.0 × 10− 9 and 2.0 × 10− 12 M, respectively. Voltammetric sensor was also applied to wastewater samples with high recovery.

Ertugay, Nese; Acar, Filiz Nuran
The sono, photo, and sonophotocatalytic degradations of Direct Blue 71 (DB71) in the presence heterogeneous TiO2 catalyst were studied at 20 kHz using ultrasonic (US) power of 95 W and aqueous temperature of 20°C for 20 min. The effects of various operational parameters such as the concentration of the dye, pH, and amounts of catalysts on the sonochemical degradation were also investigated. Sonochemical degradation of DB71 was strongly affected by initial substrate concentration, amounts of catalysts, and pH. Acidic pH was favored for the sonocatalytic degradation of DB71 using catalysts. The hybrid technique of sonocatalytic degradation was compared with the individual techniques of catalysis, sonolysis, and photocatalysis. The US degradation of dye was enhanced by catalyst addition. The structure and morphology of the catalyst were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction pattern.

Ertugay, Nese
In this work, the adsorption potential of sawdust of Swietenia mahagoni to remove Basic Violet 10 (BV10) from aqueous solutions was investigated by batch adsorption system. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope, particle size distribution, and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller methods. The effect of various experimental parameters such as pH, initial dye concentration, adsorbent concentration, and temperature on adsorption of BV10 was investigated. The optimum pH for BV10 adsorption was found to be 4.2. Equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Scatchard isotherm models. The results show that the best fit was achieved with the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum adsorption capacity of 222.76 mg g−1 at 50°C. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich models were used to analyze the kinetic data obtained at different BV10 concentrations. The adsorption kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. The calculated thermodynamic parameters, namely ∆G°, ∆H°, and ∆S°, showed that adsorption of BV10 was spontaneous and endothermic under examined conditions.

Topcu, Cihan
A novel polyvinyl chloride membrane chlorate (ClO3−) selective electrode based on modified smectite was developed for the direct determination of chlorate ions and the potentiometric performance characteristics of its were examined. The best selectivity and sensitivity for chlorate ions were obtained for the electrode membrane containing ionophore/polyvinylchloride/o-nitrophenyloctylether in composition of 12/28/60 (w/w%). The proposed electrode showed a Nernstian response toward chlorate ions at pH=7 in the concentration range of 1×10−7–1×10−1 M and the limit of detection was calculated as 9×10−8 M from the constructed response plot. The linear slope of the electrode was −61±1 mV decade−1 for chlorate activity in the mentioned linear working range. The selectivity coefficients were calculated according to both the matched potential method and the separate solution method. The calculated selectivity coefficients showed that the electrode performed excellent selectivity for chlorate ions. The potentiometric response of electrode toward chlorate ions was found to be highly reproducible. The electrode potential was stable between pH=4–10 and it had a dynamic response time of <5 s. The potentiometric behavior of the electrode in partial non-aqueous medium was also investigated and the obtained results (up to 5% (v/v) alcohol) were satisfactory. The proposed electrode was used during 15 weeks without any significant change in its potential response. Additionally, the electrode was very useful in water analysis studies such as dam water, river water, tap water, and swimming pool water where the direct determination of chlorate ions was required.

Ejder-Korucu, Mehtap; Gürses, Ahmet; Dogar, Çetin; Sharma, Sanjay K.; Açikyildiz, Metin; Sharma, SK
The textile industry produces a large amount of dye effluents, which are highly toxic as they contain a large number of metal complex dyes. The use of synthetic chemical dyes in various industrial processes, including paper and pulp manufacturing, plastics, dyeing of cloth, leather treatment and printing has increased considerably over the last few years, resulting in the release of dye-containing industrial effluents into the soil and aquatic ecosystems. The textile industry generates highly polluted wastewater and its treatment is a very serious problem due to high total dissolved solids (TDS), the presence of toxic heavy metals and the non-biodegradable nature of the dyestuffs present in the effluents. There are many processes available for the removal of dyes by conventional treatment technologies including biological and chemical oxidation, coagulation and adsorption, but they cannot be effectively used individually. Many approaches, including physical, chemical and/or biological processes have been used in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing dye, but such methods are often very costly and not environmentally safe. Furthermore, the large amount of sludge generated and the low efficiency of treatment with respect to some dyes have limited their use.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2015Uptake of selected heavy metals and their effects on some physiologic parameters and mineral nutrition in Phragmites Australis in Karasu river-Turkey
Osma, E.; Ilhan, V.; Yalcin, I.E.
Water contamination by heavy metals is a serious global problem due to increased environmental and health-related issues. In this study, we have comparatively investigated the heavy metal concentrations and mineral nutrient levels in Karasu river sediments and in plants samples of Phragmites australis (Cav.) in order to assess the biomonitoring capacity. Plant and sediment samples were collected from four different localities along Karasu River, and those samples were analyzed in terms of heavy metals such as Fe, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, Pb, Co and Cd, and in terms of mineral elements such as K, Ca, Mg, Na, Al, and B using ICP-OES. In addition, lipid peroxidation, chlorophyll and carotenoid levels in plant samples were also checked. Sediments in Karasu River contained high concentrations of Ni and Cr metals. Moreover, P. australis showed hyper-accumulation for Cd and Zn in root and leaf samples, respectively. Although there was no significant difference in chlorophyll amounts among locations, lipid peroxidation was found to be high in samples taken from İliç.

Yalcin, P.; Terzi, M.; Bastug, A.; Taskin, H.; Varinlioglu, A.; Tasdelen, B.; Kam, E.; Bozkurt, A.
This study is part of an effort to assess the level of background radiation for Erzincan Province of eastern Turkey. Radionuclide activity concentrations in soil samples were measured through gamma-ray spectrometry and the average activities were determined as 8.93, 11.39, 281.94, and 9.52 Bq/kg for the radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs, respectively. The average annual effective dose from these natural radioactivity sources ( 238U series, 232Th series and 40K,) was calculated to be 27.9 μSv. Radioactivity levels in drinking and potable water samples were studied using a multi-channel low level proportional counter. The average gross alpha activity concentration was found to be 0.0477 Bq/L (min. 0.007 Bq/L; max. 0.421 Bq/L) and the average gross beta activity was measured as 0.104 Bq/L (min. 0.008 Bq/L; max. 1.806 Bq/L). These values lead to an average annual effective dose of 9.75 μSv from the alpha emitters and 56.34 μSv from the beta emitting radionuclides in water. The radioactivity levels in the water samples investigated were found to comply with the reference levels recommended by WHO and the regulations set forth by the Turkish Health Ministry.

RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2010Adsorption of Reactive Red 120 from aqueous solutions by cetylpyridinium-bentonite
Tabak, Ahmet; Baltas, Nimet; Afsin, Beytullah; Emirik, Mustafa; Caglar, Bulent; Eren, Erdal
BACKGROUND: The removal of Reactive Red 120 (RR 120) from aqueous solutions using cetylpyridinium modified Resadiye bentonite (CP-bentonite) prepared by ion exchange was investigated with particular reference to the effects of temperature, pH and ionic strength on adsorption. RESULTS: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal analysis (TG-DTG/DTA) techniques revealed that the anionic dye (RR 120) molecules replaced partly cationic surfactant species on interacting with CP-bentonite. The positive surface charge originating from the cationic surfactant species located on the external surface of the modified bentonite sample increased at low pH values. The significant amount of dye removal by CP-bentonite at high pH values proved the importance of π and van der Waals interactions other than the electrostatic attraction in the duration of the adsorption process. The adsorption isotherms and the kinetic data were well described by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. The Gibbs energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) changes in the temperature range 25-65 °C pointed out that the RR 120 uptake increased in parallel with the temperature. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the structural arrangement of cetylpyridinium ions in the CP-bentonite sample aswell as the pH, temperature and ionic strength of the bulk solution influenced the adsorption of RR 120 dye from aqueous solutions by CP-bentonite.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2010Thermodynamics and kinetic studies of biosorption of a basic dye from aqueous solution using green algae Ulothrix sp.
Doǧar, Çetin; Gürses, Ahmet; Açikyildiz, Metin; Özkan, Esra
This study addresses removal of a basic dye, methylene blue, from aqueous solutions by using dried Ulothrix sp. biomass as biosorbent. The effects of the initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, solution equilibrium pH, biosorbent dosage, and mixing rate on biosorption of the dye have been investigated. It was found that 30 min is sufficient in order to reach adsorption equilibrium. The amount of methylene blue adsorbed onto Ulothrix sp. increased with increasing equilibrium pH and mixing rate, in contrary, it decreased with increasing temperature and sorbent dosage. The process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isosteric enthalpy and entropy values were calculated as -11.8 kJ/mol and 37.5 J/(mol K), respectively. In addition, the results suggest that the physical interactions between sorbent particles and sorbate ions play an important role for the adsorption of methylene blue onto the biosorbent.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2010Adsorption of basic dye from aqueous solutions by modified sepiolite: Equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamics study
Eren, E.; Cubuk, O.; Ciftci, H.; Eren, B.; Caglar, B.
The adsorption behavior of crystal violet (CV+) from aqueous solution onto a manganese oxide-coated (MCS) sepiolite sample was investigated as a function of parameters such as initial CV+ concentration, contact time and temperature. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms. The Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity of MCS was estimated as 319 mg/g. The pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order kinetic and the intraparticle diffusion models were used to describe the kinetic data and rate constants were evaluated. The values of the energy (Ea), enthalpy ({increment}H≠) and entropy of activation ({increment}S≠) were 56.45 kJ/mol, 53.90 kJ/mol and - 117.26 J/(mol K), respectively, at pH 6.5. The quite high adsorption capacity and high adsorption rate of MCS will provide an important advantage for use of this material in basic dye solutions.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2008The removal of lignin and phenol from paper mill effluents by electrocoagulation
Uǧurlu, M.; Gürses, A.; Doǧar, Ç.; Yalçin, M.
This study aims to investigate the treatment of paper mill effluents using electrocoagulation. Removal of lignin, phenol, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) from paper mill effluents was investigated at various current intensities by using different electrodes (Al and Fe) and at various electrolysis times (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 min). It was observed that the experiments carried out at 12 V, an electrolysis time of 2 min and a current intensity of 77.13 mA were sufficient for the removal of these pollutants with each electrode. The removal capacities of the process using an Al electrode were 80% of lignin, 98% of phenol, 70% of BOD, and 75% of COD after 7.5 min. Using an Fe electrode the removal capacities were 92%, 93%, 80% and 55%, respectively. In addition, it was found that removal of lignin, phenol, BOD and COD increased with increasing current intensity. In the experiments carried out at different current intensities, higher removal can be explained through a decrease in intra-resistance of solution and consequently an increase at the transfer speed of organic species to electrodes. It was also found that Al electrode performs higher efficiency than Fe electrode except for COD removal. However, the time required for removal of BOD was more than that of COD. The results suggest that electrocoagulation could be considered as an effective alternative to paper mill effluents treatment.

RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2007Adsorption studies on the treatment of textile dyeing effluent by activated carbon prepared from olive stone by ZnCl2 activation
Uǧurlu, Mehmet; Gürses, Ahmet; Doǧar, Çetin
This study aimed to investigate the removal of a reactive dye from aqueous solution by adsorption. Activated carbon prepared from olive stone, an agricultural solid by-product, was used as adsorbent. Different amounts of activating agent (ZnCl2) and adsorbent particle size were studied to optimise adsorbent surface area. The adsorption experiments were conducted at different process parameters such as adsorbent dose, temperature, equilibrium time and pH. The experimental results showed that at equilibrium time 120 min, optimum pH ranged between 3 and 4, and adsorbent dosage was 2.0 g 200 ml-1. While the kinetic data support pseudo-second order, a pseudo-first order model shows very poor fit. Adsorption isotherms were obtained at three different temperatures (288, 298 and 308 K). The fitness of adsorption data to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms was investigated. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters such as isosteric enthalpy of adsorption (ΔHads)y, isosteric entropy of adsorption (ΔSads)y and free energy of adsorption ΔG0 ads were calculated. BET surface area measurements were made to reveal the adsorptive characteristics of the produced active carbon. The surface area of the activated carbon produced with 20% w/w ZnCl2 solution was 790.25 m2 g-1.

The taxonomic composition of the benthic algal flora was analyzed. The diatom taxa that grow well in slightly alkaline waters were found to be abundant in the benthic algal community.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2006The adsorption kinetics of the cationic dye, methylene blue, onto clay
Gürses, A.; Doǧar, Ç.; Yalçin, M.; Açikyildiz, M.; Bayrak, R.; Karaca, S.
In this study, adsorption kinetics of a cationic dye, methylene blue, onto clay from aqueous solution with respect to the initial dye concentration, temperature, pH, mixing rate and sorbent dosage were investigated. In order to understand the adsorption mechanism in detail, zeta potentials and the conductivities of clay suspensions at various pH (1-11) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were measured. Porosity and BET surface area of clay studied were determined. The results showed that the adsorption has been reached to equilibrium in 1 h. It was found that the amount adsorbed of methylene blue increases with decreasing temperature and also with increasing both sorbent dosage and increasing initial dye concentration. Adsorption capacity decreases with increasing pH, except for the natural pH (5.6) of clay suspensions. The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue has been studied in terms of pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order sorption and intraparticle diffusion processes thus comparing chemical sorption and diffusion sorption processes. It was found that the pseudo-second-order mechanism is predominant and the overall rate of the dye adsorption process appears to be controlled by the more than one-step.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2005Removal of phenolic and lignin compounds from bleached kraft mill effluent by fly ash and sepiolite
Ugurlu, Mehmet; Gurses, Ahmet; Yalcin, Mehmet; Dogar, Cetin
This study aimed to remove phenolic and lignin compounds from paper mill industry (4500 m3/h) wastewaters, which is discharged to sea from a plant located in the western Turkey. As adsorbent, fly ash, raw sepiolite and heat-activated sepiolite were used. The effect of factors such as, particle size, temperature and pH on adsorption process was investigated. From kinetic studies, equilibrium time was found as 1 h for both. The kinetic data supports pseudo-second order model but shows very poor fit for pseudo-first order model. Intraparticle model also shows that there are two separate stages in sorption process, namely, external diffusion and pore diffusion. Adsorption isotherms for fly ash and activated sepiolite were obtained at two different temperatures. From experiments carried out at different pHs, it was observed that pH plays an important role in the adsorption process in removing of both lignin and phenolic compounds, providing both ionizating the compounds and modifying sorbent surfaces. It was also observed that heat-activated sepiolite is more effective than raw sepiolite and fly ash to remove these compounds. Adsorption of lignin and phenolic compounds increases with decreasing particle size. In addition, the efficiency of adsorption decreases with increasing adsorption temperature for both fly ash and untreated sepiolite.
