Determination of Eating Disorders Level and Risk Factors of University Students Studying Sports Education

Arslan, Yusuf Kemal; Eskici, Günay; Yarar, Hakan; Çolak, Mergül

Eating disorder has become an increasingly common problem among athletes. This study aims to determine eating disorder levels and risk factors of students studying sports education. This study was carried out on 1773 university students, 1084 (61.1%) of whom are female and 689 (38.9%) male, in the field of sports education in different provinces in Turkey. The information of the participants was collected with an individual information form and an Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q). All EDEQ sub-dimension scores and the total score were found to be statistically significantly higher in males than in females (p <0.05) except for the restraint score. It was found that, as BMI (Body Mass Index) value increased, there was a statistically significant increase in all sub-dimensions of EDEQ and EDEQ total score (p<0.05). Eating concern and shape concern scores were found to be statistically higher in those who did not perform physical activities than those who performed physical activities (respectively; p=0.030, p=0.004). An increase in the EDE-Q score indicates an increased risk of eating disorders. It can be said that being a male, having a high BMI, and engaging in strength/power sports increase the risk of eating disorders in individuals who receive sports education.

Budak, Cemalettin; Dündar, Sibel Tetik; Mertoğlu, Cuma

Skiing can be identified as a branch with the most important representative power of winter sports. Further, it has been characterized by high popularity and population, branching off in itself. During the year, different physical performance and physiological indicators are sometimes encountered in athletes depending on seasonal cycles, training levels, and living conditions. The aim of this study is to examine some physical performance parameters and the determined hormone levels to seasonal cycles. Methods: 15 male skiers with a mean age of 14.53±2.61 (years), a mean height of 158.53±9.66 (cm), and a mean body mass of 54.20±10.85 (kg) participated in the study. The information about participants' age, height, and body mass was determined by standard methods. Various measurement tools were used including a digital hand dynamometer (TKK 5401) for hand grip strength, a digital dynamometer (TKK 5402) for back and leg strength, a jump meter (Takei TKK 5406) for vertical jump height, and an electronic hand spirometer (firstMED) for respiratory functions. The Wingate anaerobic power test (Monark 894 E bicycle ergometer) was performed to determine the anaerobic power level. Additionally, to determine somatotypes (ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph) and body fat percentage; skinfold caliper (Holtain), tape measure, and digital caliper (Holtain) were respectively utilized for skinfold thickness measurement, circumference measurements, and diameter measurements. Blood samples (hemogram test, vitamin D, cortisol, and testosterone to be checked) were taken from the antecubital vein in the sitting position. From the blood samples, serum plasma was separated and preserved by centrifugation (+4o) and all samples were analyzed at once. All tests were performed once in September, December, March, and June at an altitude of 2,000 and in pre-season and mid-season. The data were analyzed through IBM SPSS 24.0 package program. Shapiro-Wilk was used to determine the distribution of the data, descriptive and frequency analysis was used to determine the mean of the variables, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the differences between measurements. The results were presented as arithmetic mean and standard deviation (X±Ss). Results: In 10-18 years old male skiers, it was determined that vitamin D reached its highest level in autumn, testosterone in summer, and cortisol in winter. In the inter-test comparison results, significant differences were determined in the vertical jump, right and left-hand grip strength, leg strength, testosterone, vitamin D, HCT, FVC, FEV1, and anaerobic power parameters. Conclusions: The results of the study have mostly supported the literature.

Background: Taekwondo (TKD) is a combat sport practiced by millions of children, young people and adults around the world.1 It is an Olympic sports branch with many complex features and constant interaction between two opponents in the competitions, where attack-contact techniques are applied quickly, attacking techniques are strong2,3 but also have good flexibility. Aim: This study has been carried out to identify the relationship between body composition of taekwondo practitioners aged 14-16 who regularly practice taekwondo, and their aerobic endurance. Methods: A total of 33 registered taekwondo practitioners (17 male, 16 female) participated to this study on a voluntary basis. The age, height, weight, and body mass index of all the athletes who took part in the study are 14.96 +/- 0.80 years, 162.59 +/- 11.59 cm, 50.97 +/- 7.51 kg and 19.14 +/- 2.39 kg/m(2) respectively. The group who participated to the study practice taekwondo two days a week, for 2 hours each, for a period of 1.5 years. The aerobic endurance of taekwondo athletes was measured by 20-meter-long Shuttle Run Test. In order to measure the body composition values of the athletes, measurements of skinfold thickness (biceps, triceps, subscapula, subrailiac) were carried out. In calculating the body density, the formula of Durning-Womersley was used; and in calculating the body fat percentage, the formula of Siri was employed. Data was evaluated by SPSS 22.0. The normality distribution of the data obtained at the end of the study was evaluated by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and it was observed that the data was in line with normal distribution. Following the normalcy assessment, the relationship between body compositions and aerobic endurances was determined by Pearson Correlation analysis. Results: It is possible to say that the body composition values of taekwondo practitioners aged 14-16 have positive and negative impact on their aerobic endurance. It is observed that as the values 20-meter Shuttle Run test increases, fat percentage of athletes decreases. Conclusion: It is concluded that the findings obtained from the research results support the literature, and that body composition and aerobic capacity are important as performance criteria in many studies. It is thought that it may be beneficial for the athletes to perform aerobic endurance exercises during the annual training periods to perform the necessary practices to optimize their body composition and improve their aerobic capacity.

Relationship between upper extremity fat mass and race time in triathlete

Bilgin, Ulviye; Yarım, İmdat; Çetin, Ebru; Çolak, Mergül; Taskin, Halil

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of upper extremity fat ratio on triathletes’ the race time. 43 volunteer athletes who participated in the 9th World University Triathlon Championship ((17 women – 26 men), age 22.30 ± 2.42 years, height 172.76 ± 16.08 cm, body weight 64.79 ± 9.93 kg)) participated in the study. Segmental analysis was performed by Tanita BC 418 Body Composition Analyzer before the race, on an empty stomach and with shorts and T-shirt. At 40 ° C air temperature, athletes firstly swam for 1.5 km, which was followed by cycling on 40 km track and finally 10 kilometers track run. SPSS 16.0 statistical software was utilized for data calculation and evaluation. According to the normality test results; Pearson correlation analysis was used to explain the relationship between the measurements and linear regression analysis was utilized to determine the effect of fat ratio on race time. This study in which the effect of upper extremity fat ratio on race time was examined, revealed that upper extremity segmental analysis has no significant effect on swimming time in triathlon (p >0.05). In addition; upper extremity fat mass has no significant effect on jogging, cycling and total race time either (p>0.05). Fat percentage is determined to have a significant relationship in positive manner with jogging (r = 0.382), cycling (r = 0.370), and total race time (r = 0.387) at p <0.05 level. Upper extremity lean mass and muscle mass are found to have a significant relationship in negative manner respectively with jogging (r = -0.475, r = -0.472), cycling (r = -0.738, r = 0.735) and total race time (r = -0.664, r = -0.661) at p <0.001 level. As a result, it was observed that the upper extremity fat mass is not associated with jogging, cycling, swimming and total race time, on the other hand upper extremity muscle and lean mass are found to be more effective on race time as compared to fat percentage. As the upper extremity, lean mass and muscle mass increases, total race time of athletes shortens and accordingly their performance are likely to be affected in a positive manner
