The mediating role of physical self-perception and the moderating effect of gender in the association between physical activity and psychological well-being among young recreational participants

Ekizoglu, Ozlem; Tetik, Sibel; Zambak, Omer; Temur, Canan Sayin; Can, Yusuf; Isik, Utku; Koc, Mustafa Can

Background/objective Psychological well-being disorders are increasingly prevalent among young people. While physical activity is known to benefit psychological well-being, the mechanisms-particularly the role of physical self-perception and gender in recreational context remain underexplored. Grounded in the Conservation of Resources (COR) Theory, this study investigates the mediating role of physical self-perception in the relationship between recreational physical activity and psychological well-being and examines whether gender moderates this mediation among youth aged 15-24.Methods A descriptive-relational survey design was employed. The sample comprised 468 young adults (58.5% male, 41.5% female; M_age = 20.08) who regularly participated in recreational physical activities. Data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP), and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Mediation and moderation analyses were conducted using PROCESS macro-Models 4 and 7.Results The direct effect of physical activity on psychological well-being was not significant. However, physical self-perception fully mediated the relationship between physical activity and psychological well-being (indirect effect: beta = 0.219, 95% CI [0.151, 0.290]). Among the sub-dimensions of physical self-perception, body attractiveness had the strongest mediating effect. Moderation analysis revealed that gender did not significantly moderate the mediation pathways (a path: p = 0.156; b path: p = 0.954). The mediation mechanism operated with similar strength in both males and females. Conclusion Recreational physical activity improves psychological well-being entirely through the enhancement of physical self-perception, supporting the COR theory that physical activity acts as a resource investment. This mechanism is universal across genders in recreational settings. Interventions aiming to improve youth psychological well-being should not only promote physical activity but specifically focus on fostering positive physical self-perception and body image in inclusive, non-judgmental environments.

The Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support in the Relationship Between Perceived Stress and Sportsmanship Among Sports Science Students

Koç, Yakup; Özkan, Rıdvan; Seçer, Emrah

This study was conducted to determine the effect of perceived stress on sportsmanship behaviour and the mediating role of perceived social support in this effect. This study used quantitative research methods and a survey design. The study group consisted of 268 university students enrolled in sports science faculties (175 male, 93 female). Data were collected using the Perceived Stress Scale, the Physical Education Course Sportsmanship Behavior Scale, and the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale. During the analysis, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted in AMOS 21 to validate the scales' factor structure. To test the study's hypotheses, correlation analysis was performed in SPSS 25, and Bootstrap-based regression analysis (model 4) was applied using the Process Macro add-on developed by Hayes (2022). The study found statistically significant positive correlations between PS and SB, between PS and PSS, and between PSS and SB. Bootstrap regression analysis revealed that PS had a significant effect on PSS. When no mediating variable was added to the model, it was determined that PS was not a predictor of SB. When PS was held constant, PSS was found to have a significant effect on SB. Finally, it was found that PS had a significant indirect effect on SB through PSS. The study found that perceived stress does not directly affect sportsmanship behaviour among sports science students, but that perceived social support, as a mediating variable, increases this behaviour.

The Impact of Joint Position Sense and Hand–Eye Coordination on Defensive Performance: A Study of Elite Adolescent Taekwondo Athletes

Özkara, Abdullah Bora; Senocak, Emre; Aydemir, Burakhan; Yılmaz, Duygu Sevinç; Kırkbir, Fatih

In this study examining the effects of joint position sense, reaction time, and hand–eye coordination on upper-extremity blocking performance in adolescent taekwondo athletes, 11 licensed athletes from the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Sports Club volunteered to participate. First, measurements of hand–eye coordination, joint position sense, and reaction time were obtained. Then, a competition simulation was conducted in which participants defended against a sequence of 20 attacks; the number of successful blocks was recorded on video. The video recordings were reviewed and scored by coaches with at least 10 years of experience. According to the Pearson correlation analyses, there was a strong positive association between the number of successful upper-extremity blocks and reaction time (r = 0.64, p = 0.03), and a strong negative association between joint position sense and block count (r = −0.61, p = 0.04). No relationship was found between hand–eye coordination and block count. Multiple regression results showed that joint position sense and reaction time together explained 45% of the variance in block performance, although neither variable alone was a significant independent predictor. These findings indicate that taekwondo blocking success is supported by a holistic set of factors. To improve defensive performance, training programs should be designed using sport-specific assessment methods, and it is recommended to incorporate light-based reaction drills to enhance reaction speed.

Parental role in children's sport participation: A grounded theory interpretation of social support theory from an alternative perspective

    Ekinci, Hasan Buğra; Zorlu, Gülzade

While parental social support is recognized as crucial for children's sport participation, its reciprocal nature and the meaning-making experience for parents themselves remain underexplored. This study moves beyond a unidirectional view by employing an integrated theoretical framework to examine parental support as a bidirectional process through which parents derive fulfillment and construct their identities. Utilizing a Constructivist Grounded Theory approach, the study draws on focused, in-situ interviews with 14 active parents to capture the specific nuances of their involvement. Data were analyzed through iterative coding, analyst triangulation, and peer debriefing. Findings reveal that parental practices—articulated through emotional, informational, and instrumental support—are not merely acts of provision but are deeply motivated by reciprocal emotional rewards, autonomy-supportive intentions, and strategic goals aligned with ideologies of “good parenting.” This research reconceptualizes parental involvement by offering an enriched model where Social Support Theory provides the structural basis, enacted through the strategic intent of Concerted Cultivation, regulated by Self-Determination Theory, and sustained by vicarious reinforcement mechanisms of Social Learning Theory. The result is a novel, relational framework that shifts the analytical lens from what support is provided to the more complex questions of why it is offered and how it is co-constructed in the parent–child dyad. © The Author(s) 2026. Mindfulness and athlete burnout among olympic combat sport athletes: the mediating role of athlete self-compassion and the moderating role of emotion regulation

Kaçay, Zülbiye; Seçer, Emrah; Işık, Özkan; Şahinler, Yunus; Talaghir, Laurentiu-Gabriel; Constantinescu, Mariana; Benţea, Cristina-Corina; Iconomescu, Teodora Mihaela

Introduction – The present study aimed to examine the effect of sport mindfulness on athlete burnout among Olympic combat sport athletes and to investigate the mediating role of athlete self-compassion and the moderating role of emotion regulation in this relationship. Methods – This study employed a cross-sectional correlational research design and included 379 athletes (279 men and 100 women) actively competing in Olympic combat sports. Data were collected using the Mindfulness Inventory for Sport, the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire, the Self-Compassion Scale–Athlete Version-Short Form and the Athlete Emotion Regulation Scale. The construct validity of the measurement instruments was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis. Relationships among the study variables were examined using Pearson correlation analysis. The proposed hypotheses were tested using the PROCESS macro, specifically Models 4, 1, and 14. Results – The findings indicated that sport mindfulness positively and significantly predicted athlete self-compassion (B = 0.155, p < 0.001). Athlete self-compassion, in turn, was found to have a significant negative effect on athlete burnout (B = −0.798, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the interaction between athlete self-compassion and emotion regulation significantly predicted athlete burnout (B = −0.060, p < 0.001). The moderated mediation analysis demonstrated that emotion regulation significantly moderated the indirect association between sport mindfulness and athlete burnout (Index = −0.009). Examination of the conditional indirect effects revealed that the burnout-reducing effect of sport mindfulness through athlete self-compassion was stronger among athletes with higher levels of emotion regulation. Conclusion – The findings suggest that the association between sport mindfulness and athlete burnout cannot be explained solely by a direct relationship. Rather, this relationship operates through athlete self-compassion and varies according to athletes' levels of emotion regulation. These findings underscore the importance of integrating mindfulness-based skills, self-compassion development, and emotion regulation capacity into interventions designed to enhance psychological resilience and prevent burnout among combat sport athletes.

Game-based and individualized movement training improves physiological and motor outcomes in young adults with autism spectrum disorder: an experimental study from Türkiye

Aydın, Ahmet Serhat; Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Halmatov, Medera; Gürkan, Alper Cenk; Akcan, İbrahim Orkun; Yılmaz, Coşkun

Background: This study aims to examine the effects of game-based and individualized movement training (GBIMT) program on physiological (body weight, body fat percentage, BMI) and motor outcomes (balance, reaction time, motor speed) in young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: An experimental design with pre-test–post-test control groups was used in the study. A total of 20 participants (10 in the experimental group, 10 in the control group) with a mean age of 22.2 ± 4.8 years were monitored for eight weeks. The experimental group participated in GBIMT sessions for 60 min per day, two days per week, while the control group continued their usual educational routines. Body composition (InBody 270 Body Composition Analyzer, model Plus 270, South Korea), balance (TechnoGym, Cesena, Italy), reaction time (BlazePod Ltd., Israel), and motor speed (Computerized Tapping Test, Neurosoft Inc., USA) parameters were used as measurements. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA results indicated a significant reduction in body weight in terms of the experimental group (p = 0.014, η² = 0.289). Large effect sizes were observed for body fat percentage and BMI; however, the group × time interactions were not found to be statistically significant. A significant improvement was observed in the motor speed parameter within the experimental group (p = 0.032, η² = 0.231). Reaction time decreased by 9.8%, although the group × time interaction stayed within the significance limit (p = 0.063). A trend toward improvement was observed in balance parameters; however, no statistically significant difference was found. Conclusion: The findings indicate that GBIMT produced significant improvements in body composition and motor speed after implementing for eight weeks, and also showed a strong tendency to affect reaction time. As a controlled experimental study conducted in Türkiye, this research offers a unique contribution to the literature by demonstrating the effects of game-based and individualized movement programs on both physiological and motor outcomes in individuals with ASD. Seçer, Emrah; Esentürk, Oğuz Kaan; Kabak, Serkan; Yarayan, Yunus Emre; Keskin, Kadir; Alkhamees, Nouf H.; Ibrahim, Zizi M.; Al-Mhanna, Sameer Badri; Batrakoulis, Alexios

Introduction and aim: This study was conducted to determine the mediating role of positive future expectations in the effect of future attitudes on future anxiety. Method: This study employed quantitative research methods and a survey model. The study group consisted of 269 university students enrolled in sports science faculties (160 male, 109 female). Data were collected using the Attitudes Toward Future Scale (ATF), Future Anxiety Scale in University Students (FAS), and the Positive Future Expectation Scale (PEF). During the analysis process, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was first conducted using the AMOS 21 program to validate the factor structure of the scales. To test the research hypotheses, correlation analysis was performed using the SPSS 25 program, and Bootstrap-based regression analysis was applied using the Process Macro add-on developed by Hayes (2022). Results: The study found statistically significant moderate correlations between ATF and FAS, between ATF and PEF, and between FAS and PEF. Bootstrap regression analysis revealed that ATF had a significant effect on PEF (β = 0.182; p <.001). When a mediator variable was added to the model, it was determined that ATF was not a predictor of FAS (b: 0.052; p >.050). When ATF was held constant, it was determined that PEF had a significant effect on FAS (-2.124, p<.001). Finally, it was determined that ATF had a significant indirect effect on FAS through PEF (-0.387; p<.001). Conclusion: The study found that the attitudes of sports science students toward the future affect their anxiety about the future, and that positive expectations for the future play an important role in reducing this anxiety.

Enjoyment as a motivational driver of sport continuation: a moderated mediation model of engagement and social support

Kaçay, Zülbiye; Seçer, Emrah; Yıldız, Nuh Osman; Esentürk, Oğuz Kaan; Talaghir, Laurentiu-Gabriel; Bentea, Cristina Corina; Ivan, Paula; Cristea, Florentina

Introduction and aim – The present study aimed to examine the effect of enjoyment of physical activities on intention to continue sport participation and to determine the mediating role of sport engagement and the moderating role of perceived social support in this relationship. Methods – This correlational study included 748 athletes (445 males, 303 females, M = 23.10, SD = 5.59). The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale, Intention to Continue Sport Scale, Sport Engagement Scale, and Perceived Social Support Scale–Short Form were used as data collection instruments. The measurement model and construct validity of the scales were tested using confirmatory factor analysis (AMOS 21). Hypotheses were tested in SPSS 25 using PROCESS Macro models (4, 1, and 14). Results – To test the first hypothesis, the mediation effect was examined using PROCESS Model 4 (PACES → SES → ICSS). The indirect effect of PACES on ICSS via SES was found to be significant (b = 0.230, 95% CI [0.184, 0.279]). For the second hypothesis, PROCESS Model 1 was applied. The main effect of perceived social support (PSS) was not significant (b = 0.076, p > .05), whereas the interaction term representing the SES × PSS interaction was significant (b = −0.0147, 95% CI [−0.0245, −0.0049]), indicating that perceived social support moderated the relationship between sport engagement and intention to continue sport participation. To test the third hypothesis, a moderated mediation model (PROCESS Model 14) was conducted with PSS as a moderator. The index of moderated mediation was significant (b = −0.010, 95% CI [−0.020, −0.0005]), showing that perceived social support moderated the indirect effect of PACES on ICSS through SES. Conclusion – The findings revealed that the indirect effect of enjoyment of physical activities on intention to continue sport participation through sport engagement was stronger among athletes with lower perceived social support.
