Çam, Ömer; Kılıç, Uğur; Tanrıverdi, Gökhan
Air transportation offers significant speed advantages, particularly on medium- and long-haul routes, yet it contributes disproportionately to environmental pollution, especially on short-haul domestic flights. In contrast, high-speed rail (HSR) represents a more sustainable alternative. This study examines CO2 emissions from narrow-body and wide-body aircraft in comparison with Shinkansen trains on selected Japanese domestic routes, where air and HSR services directly compete, focusing on the Haneda–Osaka and Haneda–Fukuoka corridors. Japan is notable for having the highest use of wide-body aircraft on domestic routes worldwide, which makes this context particularly relevant for examining the environmental impact of aircraft type. Emission data for each aircraft type were obtained using the integrated aircraft noise and emissions modeling platform (IMPACT) developed by EUROCONTROL. The results indicate that wide-body aircraft emit at least twice as much CO2 as narrow-body jets, highlighting the critical influence of aircraft type on short-haul emissions. Shinkansen trains, particularly the N700 series, demonstrate the lowest per-passenger emissions, achieving approximately 20% greater efficiency than the older 700 series. The study provides policymakers with a meaningful perspective, emphasizing that deploying wide-body aircraft on short-haul routes is inconsistent with environmental sustainability goals.

Karakavuz, Harun; Doğan, Ümit; Ergün, Nalan
Cabin crew members engage in more emotional labour due to their job demands and physical and mental labour, including a demanding work pace, irregular working hours, and extensive interaction with passengers from different cultural backgrounds or dealing with aggressive passengers. This study aims to explore the relationship between emotional labour and organisational cynicism by focusing on the mediating effect of person-job fit. The research data were collected through a survey administered to 561 cabin crew members employed in a medium-sized airline registered in Türkiye. The results indicate that person-job fit has a partial mediating effect on the effect of all sub-dimensions of emotional labour, namely surface acting, deep acting, and naturally felt emotions on the sub-dimensions of organisational cynicism (except for a full mediating effect of naturally felt emotions on behavioural cynicism). Other findings obtained from the analyses are discussed in detail in the study. The study concludes that person-job fit is vital for cabin crew members. Therefore, the study suggests that the airlines should concentrate on recruitment processes and practices to increase cabin crew members’ person-job fit.

Ecer, Fatih; Tanrıverdi, Gökhan; Yaşar, Mehmet; Görçün, Ömer Faruk
In line with the 2050 net zero emission target, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is recognized as one of the most effective decarbonization solutions for the aviation industry, which has been identified among the critical areas for mitigating climate change. However, although sustainability issues and decarbonization have attracted scholars' attention in various terms for the airline industry, we identified some significant theoretical and managerial gaps as follows: (i) the number of studies evaluating sustainable suppliers by airlines via multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches are very few, (ii) the extant literature has no paper addressing airlines' SAF supplier selection process, and (iii) no widely established criteria set in the literature to evaluate the SAF suppliers for airlines. We propose a novel model for the decision-making process of airlines' sustainable SAF supplier selection, including 39 criteria from 5 aspects considering the triple bottom of sustainability. The proposed model involves the combination of the logarithmic percentage change-driven objective weighting (LOPCOW) and measurement alternatives and ranking according to the compromise solution (MARCOS) approaches' extended forms based on the interval-valued fuzzy neutrosophic numbers (IVFNN). A comprehensive sensitivity and comparison control is further exploited to display the developed framework's robustness and practicality. Our results suggest that airlines prioritize the green initiatives of SAF suppliers over the economic aspect in the process of sustainable SAF supplier selection. We provide some managerial and policy insights for practitioners and policy-makers in the airline industry and some directions for further research.

Agaoglu, Ferhat Onur; Tarsuslu, Sinan; Koçak, Daimi; Baş, Murat
Objective: This study was designed to culturally adapt the “Attitude towards Artificial Intelligence Ethics (EAI)” scale into Turkish and to evaluate its validity and reliability in the Turkish population. Methods: This study was designed as methodological research to adapt the Attitudes Towards EAI Scale into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties. The linguistic and cultural adaptation of the scale was carried out using the translation-back translation method. The study sample sample consisted of 656 undergraduate nursing students studying at a university in Türkiye. Participants were determined by a simple random sampling method, and voluntary participation was taken as a basis. Results: When the findings were evaluated, the results of the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) showed that the original five-factor structure of the scale (transparency, harmlessness, privacy, responsibility, and fairness) was largely preserved. According to the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) results, it was determined that the five-factor model had good fit values. The scale’s internal consistency was evaluated with Cronbach Alpha (α) coefficient, and α values for all sub-dimensions ranged between 0.85 and 0.95. These results show that the scale has a high level of reliability. In addition, composite reliability (CR) values above 0.70 and average variance extracted (AVE) values above 0.50 supported the convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. Furthermore, discriminant validity was further confirmed by MSV (< 0.31) and ASV (< 0.18), and EFA results via the FACTOR program (RMSEA = 0.047, CFI = 0.993, NNFI = 0.985) also supported the five-factor structure. Measurement invariance across gender was established at all levels (∆CFI < 0.01). Conclusion: The results show that the EAI is an appropriate tool for assessing university students’ attitudes toward artificial intelligence ethics in Turkish society. Implications: In this direction, testing the scale in different professional groups, age groups, and cultural contexts in the future may expand its generalizability and usage areas. In addition, such scales are thought to provide important contributions to educational programs and policy development processes to increase ethical awareness in today’s rapidly developing artificial intelligence technologies.

Yelgin, Cetin; Geylan, Asli
Conflict is as natural a phenomenon as harmony in social relations. In all industries, especially those prioritizing collaborative teamwork, it is clear that effective conflict management is critical to sustaining positive employee relationships. With this study, we set out to investigate the impact of workplace conflicts on employee innovation. For this purpose, data were collected from employees through a survey conducted in the aviation industry in Turkey, and 393 responses were received. Structural Equation Modeling was used for hypothesis testing. The study revealed that conflict with colleagues has a detrimental impact on both innovative behaviors and work engagement. Work engagement was identified as a complete mediator in the relationship between conflict and innovative behaviors. Furthermore, a proactive personality was found to moderate the influence of conflict on innovative behaviors, also playing a significant role in the indirect relationship among these variables. The research concludes with practical recommendations for managers and suggestions to researchers for future studies.

Kiraci, Kasım; Tanriverdi, Gökhan; Akan, Ercan
The COVID-19 pandemic increased the risk of financial distress, bankruptcy, or both, in the airline industry. Whether airlines can survive or not during and/or after the pandemic is closely related to their decisions and actions which will enable their success by increasing their resilience. In crisis periods such as COVID-19, the decisions taken by airlines are strategically important for achieving sustainable success. Thus, it is critical to understand which factors are more important for airlines to shape their actions and make correct decisions. This paper investigates the sustainable success factors on which airlines should focus to provide resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. It provides a robust model using the interval type-2 fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IT2FAHP) and interval type-2 fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (IT2FDEMATEL) to identify and rank success factors. The findings indicate that financial and operational factors are extremely important to ensure resilience for airlines. In addition, the results of the study reveal that operational factors and information sharing factors have an impact on financial factors and customer satisfaction.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYayıncıda açık erişim2023Using multi-criteria performance measurement models to evaluate the financial, operational and environmental sustainability of airlines
Tanrıverdi, Gökhan; Merkert, Rico; Karamaşa, Çağlar; Asker, Veysi
Airline sustainability, defined as both decarbonization and long-term financial survival, has become critical especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our paper investigates the multi-dimensional effects of the COVID-19 crisis on airlines’ sustainability performance using data from 56 airlines for the period before, during and early after the pandemic (2017–2021). We develop and use a novel multi-criteria MEREC–CoCoSo/Borda performance measurement model tailored to the airline industry. Our results suggest that while operational results have dominated sustainability weights throughout the period, the financial pillar has gained considerably in importance while the decarbonization criterion decreased in weight in 2020. However, from 2021, decarbonization started to become more important again in the “new normal” and sector recovery. In terms of overall and sustained sustainability, low-cost carriers and small full-service carriers with predominantly domestic networks are ranked as best performers. Renewing fleet, attaching decarbonization conditions to government aid and reviewing airport slot policies are important to prepare the aviation industry for the next pandemic or disruption.

RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2023How Interpersonal Trust Influences Knowledge Hiding: Examining a Moderated Mediation Model
Koçak, Daimi
In this study, drawing on the conservation of resources theory, a moderated mediation model that examines prosocial motivation as a mediator and psychological entitlement as a moderator in the relationship between interpersonal trust (affect-based and cognition-based trust) and knowledge hiding was tested. Data were collected from 307 white-collar employees working full-time for two private companies operating in the manufacturing sector in Turkey. The results showed that prosocial motivation mediated the effects of affect-based and cognition-based trust on evasive hiding and playing dumb but not on rationalized hiding. The results also revealed that psychological entitlement influenced the strength of the indirect effects of affect-based and cognition-based trust on evasive hiding and playing dumb but not on rationalized hiding through prosocial motivation. The theoretical and practical implications of the results are also discussed.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYayıncıda açık erişim2022A Visualized Bibliometric Analysis of Mapping Research Trends Of Airline Business Models (ABMs) from 1985 to 2021
Tanrıverdi, Gökhan; Durak, Mehmet Sahin
Deregulation and liberalization acts have contributed to the emergence of various airline business models (ABMs) in the airline industry by putting competition ahead. Influenced by catastrophic crises, increased competition, and changes in customer needs and expectations, airlines have had to innovate their business models or converge them with others over time. Thus, the topic of ABM has attracted tremendous scholarly attention. However, the extant literature lacks a visualized bibliometric study that investigates the evolution of ABM in depth. In this context, this paper employs a comprehensive visualized bibliometric analysis through CiteSpace software to present the evolution of the topic “airline business model” and its possible trends in the post Covid-19 era by benefiting 652 articles on ABMs published during the period from 1985 to 2021. The results reveal that studies on ABMs have increased especially over the past few years, and Journal of Air Transport Management is the leader outlet preferred by authors on this topic. In addition, although studies on low-cost carriers have an obvious dominance over studies on other ABMs, the results provide some evidence that studies on long-haul business models will increasingly continue in the future.
