Description of Eupalopsellus recki sp. nov. (Acariformes: Eupalopsellidae) resolves the identity of E. aff. kermaniensis Mahdavi & Farzan

    Khaustov, Alexander A.; Doğan, Salih

Abstract – A new species of the genus Eupalopsellus Sellnick (Acariformes: Eupalopsellidae), E. reckisp. nov. is described based on adult females and a deutonymph from Georgia. The species was discovered in a historical slide collection containing specimens of Tenuipalpus dubinini Reck, collected from Ephedra procera. Additionally, a previously reported Turkish specimen identified as Eupalopsellus aff. kermaniensis Mahdavi & Farzan is re-examined and shown to be conspecific with the new species, thereby resolving its taxonomic status.

Morphological and ontogenetic characteristics of Eustigmaeus pinnatus (Kuznetsov) (Trombidiformes: Stigmaeidae)

    Doğan, Sibel; Doğan, Salih

Abstract – The morphology and ontogeny of Eustigmaeus pinnatus (Kuznetsov) (Trombidiformes: Stigmaeidae) are described based on specimens collected from soil and litter in Türkiye. All active developmental stages, including larva, protonymph, deutonymph, tritonymph and adults, are examined in detail. The tritonymphal stage, which has rarely been reported in the genus, is documented and characterized. Diagnostic morphological features of each stage are provided, with particular emphasis on the development of idiosomal shields, coxisternal organization, and leg and gnathosomal setation, as well as aggenital configuration. Ontogenetic changes in setation are analysed, and their taxonomic significance is discussed. Comparative assessments of E. pinnatus with E. jiangxiensis Hu, Chen & Huang and E. turcicus Doğan & Ayyıldız are also presented. The results contribute to a better understanding of character development within the genus. 2026 Systematic and Applied Acarology Society

The existence of a tritonymphal stage in the life cycle of Eustigmaeus jiangxiensis Hu, Chen & Huang (Acariformes: Stigmaeidae)

    Doğan, Sali̇H

Four active postembryonic developmental stages are often present in members of the family Stigmaeidae: the six-legged larva, the eight-legged protonymph, deutonymph, and the adult. This study provides a new description of the tritonymphal stage of Eustigmaeus jiangxiensis Hu, Chen & Huang in the Stigmaeidae. The distinguishing characteristics of the adults and the three nymphal stages are delineated. The occurrence of the tritonymphal stage in the stigmaeids is unusual. This study marks the second occasion, the first being in Stigmaeus elongatus Berlese. In addition, Ledermuelleriopsis giresuniensis Doğan & Ayyıldız is proposed as a junior synonym of Eustigmaeus jiangxiensis Hu, Chen & Huang.

Winter survivor mite: morphological insights into the frost-resistant mite Eustigmaeus absens Doğan (Acariformes: Stigmaeidae)

    Doğan, Sali̇H

This study presents morphologically the distinctive characteristics of the adults and all immature stages of Eustigmaeus absens Doğan. Some asymmetrical and numerical variations in the body setae of this species are also presented. E. absens, in addition to other months, was collected from frozen moss moulds in the winter months (November, December and January). This means that this frost-resistant species possesses the capacity to tolerate the formation of ice in its tissues. Additionally, the Turkish specimens previously identified as Eustigmaeus schusteri (Summers & Price) were evaluated and found to belong to E. parakauaiensis Kapaxidi, Stathakis & Papadoulis. Furthermore, additional specimens of E. vacuus Doğan were collected from the Karasu Valley (Türkiye). The morphological characteristics of these specimens are consistent with previous records, although a barely visible lateral incision on the hysterosomal shield was observed in one specimen, suggesting an intraspecific variation.

Two new larval species of Abrolophus and Marantelophus (Acari: Erythraeidae) from edible wild mushrooms in Türkiye

Sevsay, Sevgi; Ozyurek, Onur; Balci, Cagri; Ozman-Sullivan, Sebahat K.

Abrolophus boleticolus sp. nov. and Marantelophus kastamonuensis sp. nov. are described and illustrated from larvae collected from the wild, edible mushrooms, Boletus aereus (Boletaceae) and Marasmius oreades (Marasmiaceae), respectively, in T & uuml;rkiye. Both of these erythraeid genera, which belong to the subfamily Abrolophinae, have comb-like seta on the palptarsus. In addition, Marantelophus viticolus, which was earlier synonymized with M. rudaensis, was determined to be a valid species.

The usage of subgenera in taxonomy of the genus Raphignathus Dugès: a reaction to Khan et al. (2023), with the revised checklist of Raphignathidae

Doǧan, Sallh; Doǧan, Slbel; Fan, Qing-Hai; Uǧurlu, Silfanur

The reaction paper provides a brief response and critique Khan et al.'s (2023) proposal categorisation about dividing four subgenera of the genus Raphignathus Dugès. The present work contains following nomenclatural recommendation in Raphignathus: (1) Raphignathus bengalensisModak, 1991 and R. sayedi Gomaa and Hassan, 1986 are considered here as nomina nuda due to no formally publishing. (2) Raphignathus curtipilus Berlese, 1888 is transferred to the genus Eustigmaeus Berlese. (3) Raphignathus striatus Trägardh, 1904 is moved to the genus Prostigmaeus? Kuznetsov in Stigmaeidae based on their original descriptions and illustrations. This paper also presents a current species list for the family Raphignathidae Kramer, with a new country (Türkiye) recorded species and a case of numerical variation in its external suranal setae.

Cryptofavognathus bellus sp. nov. (Prostigmata: Cryptognathidae): a member of the unexplored mites still-hidden global

    Doğan, Sali̇H; Doğan, Si̇Bel

The genus Cryptofavognathus is represented with only two species: Cryptofavognathus anatolicus Doğan & Dönel and C. afyonensis (Koç & Akyol). The third species, Cryptofavognathus bellus sp. nov., was detected during a faunistic study on raphignathoid mites of Sansa Gorge (Türkiye) and described here. This paper also presents a current species list for the family Cryptognathidae Oudemans, with the following taxonomic recommendation in the genus Favognathus Luxton: Favognathus aegyptiaca (Fawzy, Khalil & Yassin) and Favognathus rosetta (Fawzy, Khalil & Yassin) described from Egypt should be considered species inquirendae due to their inadequate diagnostic characteristics and poor descriptions.

Human Demodex mites (Acari: Demodicidae) as a possible etiological factor in Rosacea: A cross-sectional study from Turkey

    Zeytun, Erhan; Yazici, Mustafa

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and burden of Demodex mites in patients with rosacea, and to investigate their potential contribution to the aetiology of rosacea. The study included 82 patients (44 with papulopustular rosacea and 38 with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea) diagnosed with rosacea by clinical examination and 82 healthy controls without dermatologic disease. Samples were obtained from each participant from the cheek, nasolabial, and chin regions using standardised skin surface biopsy (SSSB). Samples were examined under a light microscope, and Demodex species were identified and counted. Demodex positivity (≥5 mites) was detected in 91% of patients and 20% of controls in the study (p< 0.01). Only D. folliculorum (total 1328, mean 44.27/cm2) was detected in 37% of patients and D. folliculorum + D. brevis coinfection (total 6071, mean 134.91/cm2) in 55% of patients. Only D. folliculorum (total 97, mean 6.06/cm2) was detected in 20% of healthy controls, while D. folliculorum + D. brevis co-infection was not detected. The study showed that Demodex burden in patients with rosacea was approximately 30 times higher than in healthy controls and was caused by coinfection of D. folliculorum and D. brevis (mean Demodex burden: 179.18/cm2 in patients, 6.06/ cm2 in healthy controls). It was concluded that Demodex infestation, especially co-infection with D. folliculorum and D. brevis, may be a potential factor in the aetiology of rosacea that should not be ignored in the clinic, and that it may be appropriate to initiate antiparasitic treatment when the parasite is detected.

A subterranean new genus and species of Eutrombidiinae (Trombidiformes: Microtrombidiidae) from Turkey

    Sevsay, Sevgi̇; Elverici, Mert

A new genus and species of the Microtrombidiidae, Troglotrombidium dolichopodum n. gen. et n. sp. is described based on ectoparasitic larvae collected from two Dolichopoda lycia (Galvagni 2006) (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) specimens from a cave in Western Taurus Mountains, Turkey. The new genus can be distinguished from other genera by the absence of eyes, highly modified claws of tarsi III, sensillary setae structure of the anterior dorsal scutum, and the number of adoral setae. The new species is a typical troglobite, and this interspecific interaction is a well-documented case for the little-known host-parasite relationships from subterranean ecosystems.
