Designing a sustainable rangeland information system for Turkey

    Akar, A.; Gokalp, E.

The purpose of this study is to identify the deficiencies of the rangeland information system currently used in Turkey and, as an alternative, design a sustainable rangeland information system. In the study, both the extent of changes that occurred over time in the rangelands and the factors that caused such changes were identified, and solutions were suggested to eliminate those factors. The rangelands located in the Akcaabat district of Trabzon province were selected as the study area. Land use maps were produced by using the object-based classification method. According to the results of change analyses made with this information system, it was found out that, from 1973 to 2012, a surface area of 159.8 hectares had been degraded, demonstrating that the current information system had not been successful enough in the management of rangelands. For that reason, a sustainable rangeland information system free from all deficiencies was designed.

Evaluation of accuracy of DEMs obtained from uav-point clouds for different topographical areas

    Akar, A.

The main objective of the study was to examine accuracies of DEMs (Digital Elevation Models) with different topographical structures generated by using the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) point clouds. Two different terrains with flat and sloping topographical structures were selected for the study, and DEMs of these terrains were generated using eight interpolation techniques (Kriging, Natural Neighbor, Radial Basis Function Triangulation with Linear interpolation, Nearest Neighbor, Invers Distance to a Power, Local Polynomial and Minimum Curvature). The accuracies of DEMs were tested by calculating the statistic methods with the help of the control points obtained by land surveying techniques. At the end of the study, it was observed that in DEMs prepared for both flat (study area 1) and sloping (study area 2) terrains, Kriging interpolation method yields the best results as study area 1 and 2, respectively. In addition, the results were examined using Shapiro-Wilk and ANOVA: Friedman tests. After observing with the Shapiro-Wilk test that the data has a normal distribution, it was statistically determined through the parametric ANOVA: Friedman test that there is no difference between the variables.

Improving classification accuracy of spectrally similar land covers in the rangeland and plateau areas with a combination of WorldView-2 and UAV images

    Akar, A.; Gökalp, E.; Akar, Ö.; Yılmaz, V.

This study aims to increase the accuracy of the object based classification approach to differentiate the spectrally similar land cover types to create thematic maps depicting the current land use status in rangeland. Firstly, the multispectral and panchromatic bands of a WorldView-2 MS and Pan images are fused. The fused WV-2 image is then classified with object based approach using Support Vector Machines (SVMs) classifier (Method 1). The overall classification accuracy for Method 1 is found to be 88.6%. Secondly, UAV ortho-image is utilised for segmentation process, which is required for the object based SVM classification of the WV-2 MS image (Method 2). The overall classification accuracy for Method 2 is obtained as 92.4%. It is realised that the Method 2 increases the object based classification accuracy by 4%, compared to Method 1. This result reveals that the object based classification of the UAV and WV-2 MS images makes significant contribution to the classification accuracy.

Determining the effects of Degirmendere River on Trabzon Harbor after construction of Black Sea highway on Black Sea coast

    Akar, A.; Gokalp, E.; Bayata, H.F.; Akar, O.

Alluvium, which is composed of sand, rubble, stone and soil, is carried by stream and rivers into harbors, bays and dams. Transported alluvium is accumulated as the time went by at the bottom and causes decrease in depth level. Degirmendere watershed receives lasting and heavy precipitation. This precipitation occasionally causes overflowing of the Degirmendere Stream and therefore causes flood and heavy erosion. In this study, images belonging to the years 2000, 2003 and 2008 were determined using satellite. In this, alluvium resulting from the erosion is carried by the Degirmendere Stream into the Black Sea and discharged from the closer district into the harbor entrance of Degirmendere. This is done in comparison with previous years because of the Black Sea Coastal Road construction. Three dimensional map (shaded relief) showing submarine topography of Trabzon Harbor was made and compared with the map made in 2000 using the same method. In the conducted application, horizontal position data were determined with RTK GPS and also depths were measured with prepared mechanical sounding lead. A total of seven sections on the digital maps obtained with the sounding measurementsconducted in the years of 2002 and 2009 were transected with the aim of investigating the transformation that is occurring in time. Transformation was examined by forming graphics from the transected sections. Increase was observed in depth values in the courses frequently used by heavy tonnage ships, but decrease in depth was determined in the area where small ships and boats existed.
