RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - Book ChapterAçık Erişim2025Innovative Ways of Cooperating with Public Administration for Gender Equity in Informatics
Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay; Harizaj, Miranda; Shakarishvili, Salome
Gender inequity in informatics remains a persistent global challenge, with women significantly underrepresented in both educational and professional domains. This disparity not only constrains diversity and innovation but also hinders the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which endeavors to achieve gender equity and empower all women and girls. This chapter explores innovative strategies for public administration to foster gender equity in informatics. It aims to analyze the current challenges, develop a transformative vision for a supportive ecosystem, and propose concrete actions and innovative instruments to empower women in the field. A comprehensive methodological approach was applied, encompassing an in-depth literature review, policy analysis, and the assessment of best practices and case studies from diverse organizations and countries. The analysis revealed several barriers to achieving gender equity in informatics, including pervasive stereotypes, gaps in digital literacy, and underrepresentation in decision-making and entrepreneurial roles. To address these challenges, the chapter proposes targeted actions and innovative tools, including integrating gender considerations into legislation, the promotion of professional networks, the establishment of equitable care systems, the provision of equal opportunities for skills development, the increased representation of women in AI, the advancement of gender-inclusive AI research, and the facilitation of strategic partnerships. By adopting gender-responsive policies, encouraging collaboration with academia, the private sector, and civil society, and promoting inclusive practices, public administration can foster a more equitable and innovative informatics sector. These strategies not only enhance diversity and problem-solving capabilities but also contribute to broader societal and economic progress in the future.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - BookAçık Erişim2025Actions for Gender Balance in Informatics Across Europe
Penzenstadler, Birgit; Boudaoud, Karima; Di Marco, Antinisca; Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay
This book is a open access. The primary purpose of this book is to serve as a comprehensive guide, translating research into best practices to promote gender inclusivity in informatics. The handbook seeks to empower its readers, providing them with actionable recommendations to bridge the gender gap in informatics. This initiative aims to have an immediate impact on the informatics community, raising awareness and interest through its practical resources, and on the society bringing more women into computer science and technological studies and following career steps. This book provides you with five years of research on gender equity and improving the gender balance in Informatics across Europe. It translates current research on gender inclusivity into practical strategies and intervention methods. It offers recommendations for the recruitment, retention, and promotion of female computer scientists at different academic and industrial levels, and insights into fostering mutually beneficial cooperation between universities and industries. We have collected data from different target audiences and different education and career levels to provide insights into why we have low girl and women participation rates in sciences, why we have a leaky pipeline in academia, and why women leave the industry. We have analyzed this data and identified four target audiences for activities and policy influence. We provide sets of recommendations for each of these target groups on how to become active in advocacy as well as specific actions in their daily environments to improve learning and work environments as well as retention of women students and personnel. We provide ample scenarios of how to apply our findings in practice and share materials both in the book as well as in free public access online documentation to further disseminate and make use of this knowledge. The book serves as joint European voice of Informatics to increase the equity for women in the field.

Boudaoud, Karima; Penzenstadler, Birgit; Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay; Bobák, Fanni
In this chapter, we present a set of policy recommendations directed to policymakers at both national and European levels to promote gender equity in Informatics. After discussing the importance of policy recommendations, we present the proposed recommendations targeting four key audiences: Schools, Universities, Public Administration, and Private Sector. Following this, we present concrete examples of how these policy recommendations have been put into actions. We also give an overview about how they could be disseminated across different kinds of media. We focus particularly on EUGAIN’s comprehensive dissemination strategy across various media channels, including the design and distribution of posters, brochures, and social media content. These materials were developed collaboratively, ensuring they reflected the network’s collective expertise and were tailored to different audiences. Finally, we offer specific suggestions tailored to each target audience.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2025Modeling ChatGPT Adoption Among Undergraduates: An Integrated UTAUT2 and Digital Competence Framework
Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay
While Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies like ChatGPT are revolutionizing education by offering unique interaction opportunities and prompting legislative shifts toward AI literacy, there remains a significant gap in understanding the factors that influence their acceptance and effective use in educational settings. In particular, the impact of students’ digital competencies and motivational factors on their acceptance and utilization of GenAI tools is not well understood. This study investigates how these variables influence undergraduate students’ acceptance and use of ChatGPT as an informal learning tool, aiming to advance understanding of GenAI adoption in higher education. By integrating the Digital Competence Framework (DigComp) with the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), this research provides a comprehensive analysis of factors affecting students’ intention to use and actual use of ChatGPT. Data were collected from 544 undergraduate students using adapted UTAUT2 scales and digital competence measures aligned with DigComp. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (n = 140) validated the adapted UTAUT2, and Structural Equation Modeling (n = 404) explored relationships between variables. The findings reveal that habit, hedonic motivation, performance expectancy, and facilitating conditions significantly predict students’ intention to use ChatGPT, while behavioral intention, problem-solving skills, and ethical considerations positively influence actual use. Notably, the study highlights the critical role of problem-solving and ethical awareness—in the adoption of GenAI tools. These results suggest that existing digital competence frameworks may need updating to include GenAI-specific competencies such as prompt-writing skills, managing ongoing dialogs with GenAI tools, and critically evaluating AI-generated content.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2023Psychometric Properties of Turkish Version of Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale-2 and the Relationship Between Internet Use Patterns and Problematic Internet Use
Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay; Yıldırım, Zahide
This study aimed to validate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale-2 (GPIUS2), to categorize Internet use patterns (IUP) that are academic, social, and recreational, and to elucidate the current state of the relationships between demographic characteristics, problematic Internet use (PIU), and IUP. To this end, two studies were conducted 1 year apart at two different public universities in Turkey. The first study tested the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the GPIUS2 for young adults alongside piloting the Internet Use Patterns Questionnaire (IUPQ) with a total of 328 university students in the fall semester of 2017–2018. In a follow-up study, the Turkish version of the GPIUS2 was further validated alongside the examination of IUP with 479 university students in the fall semester of 2018–2019. Factor analyses were conducted in both studies to examine the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the GPIUS2. Pearson correlation, independent samples T-test, and ANOVA were conducted in the follow-up study to examine the relationship between demographic information, PIU, and IUP. In both the initial and follow-up studies, the translated version of the GPIUS2 proved to be a reliable, valid, and acceptable measurement instrument with 14 items and three factors. Regarding the relationship between IUP and PIU, duration of use rather than purpose of use frequency was found to be related to PIU. An increase in the duration of academic use implies a decrease in PIU, and the opposite is true for social and recreational use. The surprising, nonsignificant relationship between grade point average and PIU is discussed in line with the literature.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2022Investigation of University Students' Cyber Victimization Experience in Relation to Psychological Symptoms and Social Media Use; [Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Siber Mağduriyet Deneyimlerinin Psikolojik Belirtiler ve Sosyal Medya Kullanımı Açısından İncelenmesi]
Yıldırım, Taşkın; Tan-Kurtay, Dilvin; Caner-Yıldırım, Sonay
The purpose of this study is to examine university students' cyber-victimization experience in terms of psychological symptoms and social media use. A cross-sectional and self-reported survey was conducted among a total of 1746 undergraduate students. Data were collected through the Revised Cyber Bullying Inventory-II, Brief Symptom Inventory, and the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale. Chi-square analysis revealed non-significant gender differences for the cyber-victimization experience. Mann-Whitney U test results showed that psychological symptom scores and social media usage scores of cyber victims are significantly higher than non-victims. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that an increase in general social media usage, social media friendship, online friendship, hostility, and paranoid ideation increases the probability of reporting cyber-victimization. The results were discussed, and suggestions were provided in the light of the literature.
