The Implementation of an Intensive English Language Program in the Fifth Grade in Turkey: A Qualitative Evaluation

    Dincer, Ali; Koç, Hatice Kübra

This qualitative evaluation study aims to investigate the implementation process of a current educational reform on teaching English to young learners in Turkey, the Intensive English Language Program in the Fifth Grade, from English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ viewpoints. Seven EFL teachers at pilot schools in the city-center of Erzincan were interviewed twice. The results of the first round of interviews indicated that despite the challenges arising from the pilot program, the teachers had positive attitudes regarding the potential advantages of the program. However, the final interview results painted a different picture in that although the main principles of the policy were seen as beneficial for young learners, the teachers faced a variety of challenges, such as a heavy compulsory curriculum in terms of content, lack of professional development support on the new program and scarcity of suitable language teaching materials. Based on both these problems and the benefits of the program, the teachers offered several suggestions for improving the quality of the program; these targeted elements including poor design of the program and unsatisfying professional development support. This study takes a snapshot of the implementation of the current EFL reform and presents suggestions for policymakers and teachers.

Understanding the characteristics of english language learners’ out-of-class language learning through digital practices

    Dincer, Ali

This study aims to understand the extent to which English as a foreign language learners use technology for their autonomous language learning beyond the classroom. With a cross-sectional survey design approach, the study focuses on learner characteristics. It first investigates the existing language learner profiles of 512 English major university students concerning autonomous language learning and out-of-class technology engagement. Then, details regarding the characteristics of existing learner profiles in terms of language proficiency, daily technology use time, a variety of digital tool use and the most beneficial tools are outlined. Within this frame, cluster analyses suggested two clusters: more autonomously engaged with digital tools and less autonomously engaged with digital tools. The findings showed that more autonomously engaged students tend to have greater language-learning proficiency than the less autonomous group. The more autonomously engaged students also spent more time daily and used various digital tools in comparison to less autonomous technology users. While online websites and social media were the most frequently used digital tools for both groups, the use of podcasts, blogs and online language courses differed. According to the provided tool lists of learners, students benefited significantly from social media, online websites, dictionaries, and intelligent tutoring system applications (apps). Online games, YouTube, Instagram and other smartphone apps, which allow students to practice vocabulary and speak with foreigners, also had considerable influence on language development. The study findings provide insights for language teachers aiming to extend learners’ in-class language-learning experiences beyond the confines of the classroom.

Self-determination and motivated engagement in language learning

Noels, Kimberly A.; Lou, Nigel Mantou; Lascano, Dayuma I. Vargas; Chaffee, Kathryn E.; Dincer, Ali; Zhang, Ying Shan Doris; Zhang, Xijia

This chapter provides an overview of self-determination theory (SDT), and reviews how it has been incorporated in second language learning research to better understand language learning motivation. Findings from 20 years of empirical studies generally support the premises of SDT, although there are noteworthy gaps in this body of research regarding the motivational process across learners’ ages and ethnolinguistic contexts, as well as regarding the dynamic, time-nested nature of the process. The chapter ends by suggesting future directions for theory development, quantitative and qualitative research, and interventions for teaching.

Proficient speakers of english as a foreign language: A focus-group study

    Dincer, Ali; Dariyemez, Tevfik

Although English is the de facto language of communication across nations in today’s world, a limited number of foreign language learners are able to communicate well in English and perceive themselves as competent speakers. Investigating traits of proficient speakers of English and understanding the reasons behind their speaking skills can guide language teachers in creating supportive language learning contexts for their students. This study explores what proficient speakers of English do to gain success in speaking, and it sheds light on how to improve speaking skills in language learning. The study examines what factors play an important role in the language development of proficient speakers of English. Sixteen English as a foreign language (EFL) students who had the highest scores on English speaking tests volunteered for this study; four focus groups were created with four participants in each group. Content analysis results indicate that contextual factors – including self-practice, teacher factor, experience abroad, Turkish context, out-of-class technology use, and affective factors, including motivation and anxiety – are important for speaking enhancement. Findings clearly reveal that language learning should go beyond the confines of the school and be supported with technology-enhanced extracurricular exercises in EFL contexts. Moreover, what motivates language learners to study English and how they feel while speaking should be considered while teaching or planning their speaking lessons.

Yabancı Dil Sınıflarında Öz-Belirlemeci Ders Katılımı: Özerklik-Desteği, Psikolojik İhtiyaçlar ve Ders Katılımı Arasındaki İlişkiler

Dincer, Ali; Yeşilyurt, Savaş; Noels, Kimberly A

Self-Determination and Classroom Engagement of EFL Learners: A Mixed-Methods Study of the Self-System Model of Motivational Development

Dincer, Ali; Yeşilyurt, Savaş; Noels, Kimberly A.; Vargas Lascano, Dayuma I.

This study examines the antecedents and outcomes of classroom engagement of 412 Turkish English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Grounded in self-determination theory and the self-system model of motivation, this mixed-methods study examined the relations between context (perceived autonomy-support from the instructor), self (basic psychological needs), action (behavioral, emotional, agentic, and cognitive engagement), and outcome (achievement and absenteeism). The results of structural equation modeling supported the hypothesized model and showed that learners’ perception of their teachers’ autonomy-support within the classroom predicted their need satisfaction, which in turn predicted self-determined engagement. Engagement predicted achievement and absenteeism within English courses. Semi-structured interviews showed patterns consistent with the quantitative results, and also that students felt their engagement would best be supported in classes with a positive social atmosphere. As well, their comments underscored the important role of language teachers in supporting learners’ psychological need satisfaction, classroom engagement, and positive academic outcomes. The findings suggest strategies for English language educators to bolster students’ engagement within the classrooms, including students who seem to be unmotivated, reluctant language learners.

Motivational factors in multilingual students’ learning additional languages: The case of english and Turkish

    Dincer, Ali

The current study examined the relationships among motivational factors (i.e., motivation types and motivational strength, and language anxiety) in the simultaneous learning process of additional languages. A mixed-methods design was conducted with 86 multilingual learners learning both English and Turkish. The data were collected using a survey and follow-up open-ended questions about the motivational factors. There were three major findings of the study. First, the motivational factors in one language were positively correlated with the same factors in another. Second, although the learners' motivation (i.e., intrinsic, extrinsic and integrative) and motivational strength to continue their education showed no differences in both languages, their L2 anxiety towards learning additional languages was statistically different, in that learners were less anxious when learning English language than learning Turkish language. Third, multilingual learners’ interest in learning other languages and willingness to integrate in the target language culture, the status quo of the target language in the global world and the level of unfamiliarity of the target language seem to play a role in the learners' beliefs of motivation, feeling in learning additional languages and intention to study languages. Overall, the study highlighted the role of multilingualism in learning English and Turkish. It also shed light on understanding L2 affective factors learning distinct L2s.

The effects of autonomy-supportive climates on EFL learners' engagement, achievement and competence in English speaking classrooms

Dincer, Ali; Yesilyurt, Savas; Takkac, Mehmet; Baskan, GA; Ozdamli, F; Kanbul, S; Ozcan, D

Self-determination theory (SDT), one of motivation theories, divides learning contexts into two groups as autonomy-supportive and controlled climated according to teachers' behaviours. Autonomy-supportive climates are associated with teacher behaviours which facilitate students' learning, and mostly related to intrinsic motivation, higher perceived competence, higher academic achievement and classroom engagement. Unlike autonomy-supportive ones, controlled climates are connected with teacher behaviours which have detrimental effects on students' learning, and related to amotivation, extrinsic motivation, negative emotions towards learning, less academic achievement, dropping out of school. Considering these facts, this study hypothesized that learning climates' being perceived as autonomy supportive or controlled would be closely associated with students' perception about their English speaking competence, achievement in English speaking and classroom engagement. To test the hypothesis, 55 Turkish EFL preparatory-first graders chosen according to convenience sampling completed a four-section form including a learning climate questionnaire, a perceived competence scale, an engagement question and demographic questions including gender, age group, last examination score. Descriptive and correlation analyses of the data supported the hypothesis. Findings showed that speaking course teachers created an autonomous environment and their students had high levels of perceived competence in speaking. In addition, autonomy-supportive teacher behaviours were positively correlated with perceived competence (p<.05). Furthermore, these behaviours were siginificantly and positively correlated with students' engagement in English speaking lessons and achievements (p<.01). (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
