Elveren, Müjgan; Yilmaz, Abdulvahap
Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) prediction can inform the development of strategies to minimise future light pollution and mitigate its adverse health, ecological, and environmental impacts. Population growth and GDP expansion significantly influence ALAN dynamics. This study quantifies changes in light pollution across Türkiye for 2012, 2017, and 2022, and predicts and maps potential changes in ALAN for 2027 and 2037 using the MOLUSCE plugin (MLP-ANN) in QGIS version 2.18, incorporating population and GDP as driving variables. The predicted and observed ALAN maps for 2022 show a satisfactory level of agreement, with an overall kappa coefficient of 0.63 and a general accuracy of 73.16%. The predicted and observed ALAN maps for 2022 exhibit an overall kappa coefficient of 0.63 and a general accuracy of 73.16%. Based on this validation, potential changes in ALAN according to Bortle classes were projected for 2027 and 2037. From 2022 onwards, ALAN intensity in the light suburban zone (20.1–19.1 mag/arcsec²) is projected to increase by 34,792.87 km², while the suburban–urban transition zone (19.1–18 mag/arcsec²) is expected to expand by 2,979.80 km² by 2037. The predicted spatial patterns provide critical insights into future urbanisation trends and light pollution dynamics. The contraction of rural areas and expansion of suburban zones pose notable risks to environmental sustainability. Gains and losses among Bortle classes indicate that ALAN dynamics can be managed through spatial planning and that ALAN projections can serve as early-warning and scenario-based decision-support tools. Integrating ALAN maps into Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and spatial planning policies can help preserve dark-sky areas and mitigate the impacts of light pollution.

Hedysarum candidissimum (HC), a species endemic to Türkiye, represents a potential source of bioactive phytochemicals with pharmacological applications. This study provides the first comprehensive investigation of the species, integrating organ-specific phytochemical profiling with biological activity evaluations. Methanolic extracts from leaf, stem, and root were analyzed for their phytochemical composition and biological activities. Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysis quantified 53 phenolic compounds and revealed organ-dependent differences in metabolite distribution. Quinic acid was the major phenolic acid, with the highest content in the stem (91.81 mg/g extract), while flavonoid glycosides such as isoquercitrin (90.72 mg/g extract) and astragalin (43.61 mg/g extract) were higher in leaves. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH, FRAP, TPC, and TFC assays. The leaf extract showed the strongest activity, with the lowest DPPH IC50 (5.43 ± 0.18 µg/mL), highest reducing power (192.47 ± 0.91 mg TE/g extract), and highest phenolic and flavonoid contents (220.84 ± 1.07 mg GAE/g extract and 107.26 ± 0.77 mg QE/g extract). Enzyme inhibition assays demonstrated strong activity against acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and α-glucosidase (2.44 ± 0.11, 3.35 ± 0.37, and 3.40 ± 0.20 µg/mL). Antiproliferative activity showed moderate growth inhibition in lung (A549, Calu1, H1650) and breast (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231) cancer cell lines (GI50: 2.40–19.15 µg/mL), with higher sensitivity in breast cells. The stem extract exhibited the highest tumor selectivity index (1.83), while LDH assays indicated low toxicity. Multivariate analyses confirmed organ-specific metabolite patterns and relationships between phenolic composition and biological activities. These findings indicate that the species, particularly the leaf extract, represents a source of phenolic metabolites for further phytochemical and biological investigation.

Hedysarum erythroleucum is a plant species native to Türkiye and represents a potential source of bioactive compounds. This study investigated the phytochemical composition and biological activities of methanolic extracts prepared from the leaves, stems, and roots. LC-MS/MS analysis identified 53 phenolic compounds and revealed clear differences in metabolite distribution among plant organs. Quinic acid was the predominant phenolic acid, particularly in the leaf extract. Flavonoid glycosides such as isoquercitrin, astragalin, and rutin were also abundant in the aerial parts of the plant. The antioxidant potential of the extracts was evaluated using DPPH, FRAP, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content assays. Among the tested plant parts, the leaf extract exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity, with the lowest DPPH IC50 value, the highest reducing power, and the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents. These findings indicate that the leaves contain high levels of antioxidant compounds. Enzyme inhibition assays showed that the leaf extract exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and α-glycosidase. Its activity was comparable to that of the reference inhibitors under the experimental conditions. Antiproliferative activity was assessed against lung and breast cancer cell lines. All extracts inhibited cancer cell growth, with the highest sensitivity observed in H1650 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Tumor selectivity indices suggested moderate selectivity, especially for root extracts. LDH cytotoxicity analysis indicated limited membrane damage, suggesting that the extracts primarily exert cytostatic effects by suppressing cell proliferation rather than inducing extensive cell death. Multivariate analyses revealed organ-specific metabolite patterns and associations between phenolic composition and the measured biological activities. Overall, the findings indicate that H. erythroleucum, particularly the leaf extract, contains a high content of phenolic compounds and exhibits promising in vitro antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory, and antiproliferative activities. These findings provide a basis for future phytochemical investigations, mechanistic studies, compound isolation, and in vivo validation.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2026Enhancing pepper resilience to tebucanozole stress: role of copper and Bacillus subtilis microorganisms
Elveren, Müjgan; Osma, Etem; Varol, Tuğçe; Yaman, Mehmet; Öztürk, Halil İbrahim
Background: In this study, 75 and 100 ppm tebuconazole was applied to pepper seedlings and stress was created. Applications containing Bacillus subtilis, copper and Bacillus subtilis-copper combination were made to reduce the effect of stress on plants. Results: In both tebuconazole doses, significant decreases were observed in plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, leaf area and dry and fresh weights of plants and roots (63%, 37%, 40%, 45%, 27% and 26% respectively). However, bacteria, copper, and combination applications significantly reduced these negative effects; especially, copper-bacteria combination at 75 ppm (K4) and bacteria-only application at 100 ppm (K6) were the most effective in reducing stress. Tebuconazole applications increased oxidative stress and significant increases were detected in catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activities. The highest CAT activity was recorded in the group treated with bacteria (K6) under 100 ppm stress, indicating that antioxidant defenses were strengthened. Photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids) were decreased by tebuconazole stress but were significantly preserved by bacterial and copper treatments. While EC (electrolyte conductivity) value increased due to stress, bacteria and copper applications had a positive effect by decreasing EC values. While tebuconazole stress disrupted the balance of some elements, mineral levels were rebalanced after ameliorative applications, and increases were determined in important elements such as Mn, Mg and B. According to the correlation analysis, significant positive correlations were determined between growth parameters, pigment contents and antioxidant enzyme activities. Conclusions: As a result, Bacillus subtilis and copper applications provided a decrease in toxicity due to stress and increased antioxidant enzyme activity. In addition, ameliorative applications provided protection in photosynthetic pigments and increased cell membrane integrity. These findings indicate that the use of beneficial bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis and micronutrients such as copper (Cu) at appropriate concentrations may be beneficial as sustainable solutions against fungicide stress.

RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2025EFFECTS OF LIGHT AT DIFFERENT DISTANCES AND POWER ON WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.) AND BARLEY (Hordeum vulgare L.) GROWTH
Aricioğlu, Ayşegül; Akaltun, Yunus; Elveren, Müjgan; Osma, Etem
Global population growth increases the need for efficient methods of maintaining a stable food supply. Light is one of the most important influences on plant growth and development. Artificial lighting elements used in agricultural applications have different effects on plants. This study analyzed the effects of metal halide (MH) lamps with a wavelength of 450 nm, at distances of 1, 1.5, and 2.5 m, on barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth. Growing occurred in light magnification rooms without daylight, using 250, 400, and 600 W MH lamps as the only light source. Plants exposed to light for 13–14 h a day were harvested after 18 days. After harvest, the amount of electrolyte leakage, chlorophyll, carotenoid, and B, Cu, Mn, Zn, K, and Ca intake were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The data were analyzed with the SPSS 22 Statistical Package program. Wheat and barley grown at different light distances and intensities showed statistically significant changes in mineral element uptake and plant chlorophyll levels. This research contributes to the optimization of agricultural productivity and the understanding of the interaction between light quality and other environmental parameters.

In this study, the flowers of 20 plant species [Gypsum (Linum flavum, Paracaryum stenolophum, Onobrychis nitida, Gypsophila lepidioides, Psephellus recepii, Tanacetum heterotomum, Verbascum alyssifolium, limestone (Teucrium leucophyllum, Stachys sparsipilosa, Phlomis oppositiflora, Pelargonium endlicherianum, Chrysophthalmum montanum, serpentine (Convolvulus pseudoscammania, Fumana aciphylla, Gladiolus halophilus, Hypericum thymbrifolium, Salvia indica, Artedia squamata, Erysimum pulchellum, Consolida olopetala], including 11 endemic species, growing in various habitats (gypsum, limestone, and serpentine) in Erzincan province were examined. By focusing on the antioxidant capacities and antibacterial activities of these species, the study aims to elucidate the effects of these ecosystems on the biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites, primarily phenolic compounds and flavonoids, and their adaptive biochemical responses to unique environmental conditions. Antioxidant properties were assessed using DPPH, FRAP, TPC, and TFC assays. Results showed significant differences in antioxidant compound concentrations among plants from different habitats, with the highest levels in serpentine and gypsum regions. Artedia squamata L. from serpentine had the strongest DPPH activity (24.83 ± 1.25 µg/ml), Erysimum pulchellum had the highest TPC (89.44 ± 0.76 mg GAE/g), and Tanacetum heterotomum had the highest TFC (43.48 ± 2.08 mg QE/g) in gypsum. FRAP activity was highest in serpentine species, particularly Consolida olopetala (32.14 ± 1.84 mg TE/g). Furthermore, Antibacterial assays against eight ATTC strains revealed significant inhibitory effects by Stachys sparsipilosa, Tanacetum heterotomum, Teucrium leucophyllum, and Verbascum alyssifolium against Enterococcus faecium and Salmonella enteritidis with Teucrium leucophyllum showing the highest activity (MIC of 31.25 µg/ml against Salmonella enteritidis). The study highlights the influence of habitat on the biosynthesis of bioactive compounds, suggesting that plants from serpentine and gypsum soils have enhanced antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, making them potential candidates for natural therapeutic agents.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2025Physiological and biochemical responses of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to combined exposure of Pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs), and artificial sweeteners (ASs)
Elveren, Müjgan
In this study, pharmaceutical active ingredients (gemfibrozil, acetaminophen and ciprofloxacin) and artificial sweeteners (aspartame and sucralose) were combined and applied to wheat and barley plants. After 15 days of cultivation, a series of biochemical and physiological parameters were evaluated. These included electrolyte leakage, antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), chlorophyll levels, total phenolic content (TPC), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), total flavonoid content (TFC) and concentrations. The relationship between the control samples and the samples treated with pharmaceutical active ingredients and artificial sweeteners was statistically evaluated at the 95% confidence interval, and significant differences were found. The treatments markedly influenced plant physiology and antioxidant defense mechanisms. Electrolyte leakage increased to 795.71 ± 50.14 µS cm-1 in wheat, while catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities showed significant elevations, reaching 5797.5 ± 115.14, 95176.00 ± 3675.42, and 1766.11 ± 13.97 EU g−1, respectively. In contrast, chlorophyll a + b, carotenoids, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and FRAP values decreased substantially compared with controls. These findings demonstrate that mixtures of pharmaceuticals and artificial sweeteners can disrupt photosynthetic pigment stability, and impair antioxidant defense in wheat and barley, highlighting potential ecological and agricultural risks associated with emerging contaminant mixtures.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleAçık Erişim2024Effects of artificial sweeteners on antioxidant enzymes and physiological parameters in Triticum aestivum (Poaceae)
Elveren, Müjgan
Due to increased consumption, artificial sweeteners are often present in the environment but their effects on plants are largly unknown. In this research, the effects of four artificial sweeteners on plant stress markers in Triticum aestivum L. were investigated. Wheat seedlings were grown from seeds in soil containing artificial sweeteners (saccharin, sodium cyclamate, sucralose, aspartame) in different concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100 mg kg–1). Plants were irrigated at regular intervals to maintain field capacity moisture and harvested after 15 days of growth. Electrolyte leakage, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, and antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase) activities were determined in harvested leaves. Comparisons between control samples and test samples were statistically evaluated at a 95% confidence interval to determine significant differences. Overall, significant increases in chlorophyll and carotenoid content, and some antioxidant enzyme activities were observed in wheat plants exposed to artificial sweeteners in the soil. A significant increase in electrolyte leakage was observed with saccharin and aspartame treatment, indicating that these sweeteners can cause membrane damage in wheat. Chlorophyll a and POX activity were the most sensitive stress parameters in wheat. This study showed the importance of evaluating the potential impact of anthropogenic pollutants that may be present in treated wastewater and consequently affect plants.

In this study, 25 plant species growing in different habitats in Erzincan province were studied with gypsum (Ebenus macrophylla, Gypsophila lepidioides, Linum flavum, Onobrychis nitida, Paracaryum stenolophum, Psephellus recepii, Tanacetum heterotomum, Verbascum alyssifolium), limestone (Alkanna megacarpa, Alyssum sibiricum, Anthemis sp., Astragalus sp., Chrysophthalmum montanum, Ebenus laguroides, Genista aucheri, Pelargonium endlicherianum, Stachys sparsipilosa), or serpentine (Artedia squamata, Consolida olopetala, Convolvulus pseudoscammania, Erysimum pulchellum, Fumana aciphylla, Gladiolus halophilus, Hypericum thymbrifolium, Salvia indica). Within the scope of the study, element concentrations were determined in plants with different flower colors (yellow, purple–blue–pink, white) and in the soils where they grow. Our goal was to assess whether there were differences in mineral element concentrations within plants from these different areas and whether those differences (if they existed) led to changes in plant morphology, specifically flower coloration. The flowers, leaves and root parts of the collected plants and the soils of the habitats where they grow were pre-treated in the laboratory. Mineral element concentrations in the prepared samples were determined by ICP-MS. Plant and soil data obtained were statistically evaluated, and the differences between the habitats were determined. It was observed that there were differences in terms of mineral elements in the generative and vegetative parts of the plant and these differences impacted flower color; these coloration differences in plants from other areas might be used to indicate the presence of potentially important minerals.

Light Emitting Diode (LED)s are used extensively in almost everywhere in our daily life and they have different color temperatures such as Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) which is represented by ˚K (Kelvin). In this study, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were cultivated in laboratory environment under LED with different CCT values (2000, 3000, and 6000˚K). After cultivation, plant height and weight values, the quantity of chlorophyll and carotene, the amount of leakage of electrolyte and element absorption capacity from the soil, POX (Peroxidase) and SOD (Superoxide Dismutase) enzyme activities of cultivated plants were determined. Results were evaluated on Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Program (SPSS 22) and significant differences were obtained on plants which were grown at different color temperatures of light. It was concluded that measurements from plants which were grown under LED light with cold color temperatures (6000˚K) were more consistent than those of plants grown under other lights with different temperatures. It has been deduced that cold color temperatures are closer to the optimum light values required for a plant to grow faster.

Common drug active substances (gemfibrozil, β-estradiol, caffeine, and ciprofloxacin) were combined in simple mixtures and applied to soil containing wheat or barley. Mixtures in water (50 μg/mL) were applied twice during the growing period. Harvested plant samples were extracted and antioxidant enzyme activities, as indicated by CAT, POD, and SOD were compared in exposed and control plants. Lipid peroxidation markers were also determined. Finally, mineral element uptake in exposed and control plants was determined. The data indicated differences in several, if not all, of the plant biomarkers between control plants and those treated with simple mixtures of pharmaceutical substances; many were directly related to oxidative damage. It was determined that there were statistically significant differences in the element intake of 8 nutrients (magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, mangan, copper, and iron) in control plants compared with plants treated with PPCPs; we observed both increases and decreases in plant nutrients depending on the particular nutrient, pharmaceutical treatment, and plant species.

RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - ArticleYalnız künye2020Exposure to pharmaceuticals affects nutrient and metal uptake by wheat, triticum aestivum L.
Osma, Etem; Elveren, Müjgan
Interest in water recycling has provided opportunities to evaluate the potential impact of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) on plants where recycled wastewater is used for watering and irrigation. Most researches have focused on the impact of pharmaceuticals on seed germination and plant physiology or the uptake of pharmaceuticals into plants. We sought to find out whether nutrient and metal uptake into wheat plants were affected by the presence of PPCPs (acetaminophen, caffeine, β-estradiol, and gemfibrozil) in soil. As acetaminophen, caffeine, β-estradiol, and gemfibrozil concentrations in soil increased, plant physiological parameters such as electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation also increased significantly over levels in control plants grown in parallel. Furthermore, increasing PPCP soil concentrations led to decreasing element concentrations in wheat plants, suggesting a reduction in uptake of nutrients and metals in the presence of pharmaceuticals. Our short-term observations suggest plants irrigated with recycled wastewater containing PPCPs experience stress which is ultimately reflected in a reduction of nutrient and metal uptake by wheat plants.

Tarla kapasitesine uygun olarakbuğdaylar belirli aralıklarla sulanarak, 15 gün yetiştirildikten sonra hasat edilmiştir. Hasat edilen örneklere ekstraksiyonişlemi yapıldıktan sonra, örneklerde H2O2 içeriği belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca, buğday örnekleri ön işlemlerden geçirildiktensonra mineral element konsantrasyonları ICP-OES’te analiz edilmiştir. Kontrol örnekleri ile test örnekleri arasındakiilişki %95 güven aralığında, istatistiksel olarak ANOVA testi ile değerlendirilmiş, anlamlı farklılıklar tespit edilmiştir.Çalışmada, acetaminophen ve gemfibrozil uygulanan örneklerde konsantrasyon artışına bağlı olarak kontrol grubu ilekıyaslandığında buğdayların mineral element alımında azalma gözlenirken, H2O2 içeriğinde artış olduğu belirlenmiştir.

Herein this study, the effects of the wastewaters that transmitted to the ecosystem from the air conditioner on the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants were investigated. The soil to be planted for study was mixed at different concentrations (1/5, 2/5, 3/5) of the air conditioner wastewater except for the control group. On 650 g of soil 5 g of barley and 7 g of wheat seed were planted and covered with 100 g of soil. Wheat was irrigated at regular intervals in accordance with field capacity. The wheat was harvested after 15 days and the barley was harvested after 11 days. After weighing the harvested samples electrolyte leakage, MDA, CAT, SOD activities were determined by extraction. Along with that wheat and barley specimens were analyzed for metal concentrations in ICP-OES after pre-treatment. The relationship between control samples and samples grown at different concentrations of A/C wastewater was evaluated statistically and significant differences were determined.
