Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Tuzluca Yesilbag, Fatma Nur; Huseyin, Ahmad; Salih, Ahmed Jalal Salih; Ertugrul, Mehmet

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid electrodes combining complementary charge-storage mechanisms represent a promising approach for advanced supercapacitors. In this work, few-layer β-borophene nanosheets were synthesised via a modified Hummers' method and integrated with Ti2NbC2Tx MXene to form 2D/2D hybrid electrodes. Structural characterization confirmed successful borophene exfoliation, MXene–borophene heterostructure formation with locally ordered domains and enhanced ion accessibility. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that hybrid electrodes significantly outperformed pristine MXene and borophene. The MX-B10 composition exhibited the highest specific capacitance, superior rate capability, and optimal charge-transfer kinetics attributed to synergistic surface-controlled capacitance from borophene and diffusion-assisted ion transport in MXene. A symmetric solid-state supercapacitor (SSSC) assembled with MX-B10 electrodes achieved 54 Wh kg−1 at ~300 W kg−1, retaining 23.2 Wh kg−1 at ~7.6 kW kg−1 with ~97% capacitance retention after extended cycling, These results highlight the potential of borophene–MXene heterostructures for high-performance energy storage applications.

Enhancing radar absorption performance of Sr-hexaferrite by hybridization with coiled carbon nanotubes via chemical vapour deposition method

Zulkimi, Muhammad Misbah Muhammad; Azis, Raba'ah Syahidah; Ismail, Ismayadi; Mokhtar, Nurhidayaty; Ertugrul, Mehmet; Hamidon, Mohd Nizar; Hasan, Intan Helina; Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Tuzluca, Fatma Nur; Ozturk, Gokhan

A strategy of a highly feasible method to achieve a broad bandwidth of radar absorbing materials (RAM) is reported. Herein the magnetic Sr-hexaferrite were prepared using a conventional sintering process at 900 °C and later hybridized with coiled carbon nanotubes (CNT) via a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) detected two phases of compounds after sintering which were 36 % of SrFe2O4 and 64 % of SrFe12O19. Two groupings of nanoparticle size showed no significant effect on reflection loss (RL) performance. Interestingly after hybridization of coiled CNT with the magnetic materials, the permittivity was increased tremendously hence enhancing the RL. Multiple relaxations of dielectric and eddy current losses were responsible for the enhancement. The RL was increased as the thickness was increased from 1 mm to 3 mm. 6 % of coiled CNT/Sr-hexaferrite hybrid resulted in low RL of -19 dB with the broadest bandwidth of 3GHz over X-band frequency. The report is important for paving future work in obtaining a desired broad bandwidth RAM.

Tuzluca Yesilbag, Fatma Nur; Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Huseyin, Ahmad; Salih, Ahmed Jalal Salih; Ertugrul, Mehmet

3D structures obtained using 1D and 2D materials are promising materials in energy storage. Optimizing the interlayer spacing of 2D MXene through flexible conductive materials is an important step in synthesizing 3D composite electrodes. In this study, flexible and conductive MXene/BCN nanotube composite film electrodes were prepared by vacuum filtration using BCN nanotubes in different weight ratios (10 %, 20 %, and 30 %) in mixed and sandwiched structures. The mixed MXene/BCN10 (m-MX/BCN10) composite film electrode structure attained a specific capacitance of 678 F g−1, the highest of all tested electrodes, and exhibited remarkable cycle stability by retaining 95 % of its capacitance even after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. In the symmetric supercapacitor (SSC), the cell exhibited a specific capacitance of 97 % after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, SSC showed an energy density of 32 Wh kg−1 and a power density of 11.5 kW kg−1. The composite electrodes made of 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene and 1D BCN nanotube materials open up a new avenue for synthesizing promising materials for energy storage in transition metal carbides and 1D nanotubes or nanowires.

In the present work, substitution of strontium U-type hexaferrite with the composition of Sr4Mn2-xZnxFe36O60 (x = 0.5,0.6,0.8, and 1.0) was prepared via high energy ball milling (HEBM) and sintered at 1100 °C. The phase, microstructure, magnetic, dielectric and electromagnetic wave absorbing properties of U-type strontium hexaferrite composites were measured using XRD, FESEM, and Vector Network Analyzer in the frequency range of 8–18 GHz (X-band and Ku-band). MnZn doping was found to shift the natural resonance of the materials by affecting its magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The reflection loss (RL) indicated that the composite possessed good microwave-absorbing properties with U-type strontium hexaferrite ( Sr4Mn2-xZnxFe36O60) of x = 0.8 resulted in high minimum RL value for all thickness of 1 mm and two peaks at approximately − 32.50 and − 41.50 dB at 14.00 and 15.60 GHz, with bandwidth of 0.60 and 0.80 GHz for losses less than − 10 dB.

Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Tuzluca Yesilbag, Fatma Nur; Huseyin, Ahmad; Salih, Ahmed Jalal Salih; Ertugrul, Mehmet

In the present study, nitrogen-doped vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (N-VACNTs) were synthesized on carbon cloth (CC) using the floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD) method, and MnO2 nanosheets were grown on them using the hydrothermal method to produce an N-VACNT@MnO2 nanocomposite structure. In this structure, a synergistic effect was obtained by combining N-VACNTs, which allow high electrical conductivity and fast ion transfer. In the galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) measurements performed separately in a three-electrode test cell using 1 M of Na2SO4 electrolyte, the specific capacitance of the N-VACNTs was found to be 53.7 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1, and the specific capacitance of the N-VACNT@MnO2 electrode structure was found to be 497 F g−1. In addition, after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g−1, the N-VACNT electrode retained 99 % of its initial specific capacitance, while the N-VACNT@MnO2 electrode exhibited outstanding cyclic stability with 76 % of its initial specific capacitance. Moreover, in the as-fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) using N-VACNTs and N-VACNTs@MnO2, the negative and positive electrodes achieved a stable voltage window of 0–1.7 V, with a specific capacitance of 59.4 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Additionally, this ASC showed good cycling stability retaining 84 % of its specific capacitance at the end of 10,000 cycles. Therefore, this ASC structure with an energy density of 24.7 Wh kg−1 and a power density of 15.7 kW kg−1 are promising electrode materials for energy storage.

Chachuli, Siti Amaniah Mohd; Hamidon, Mohd Nizar; Ertugrul, Mehmet; Mamat, Md Shuhazlly; Coban, Omer; Tuzluca, Fatma Nur; Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Shamsudin, N.H.

Various doping materials, such as MWCNTs, graphene nanoflakes and MXene, have been doped into TiO2 and the hydrogen sensing properties investigated. Using a similar volume, MWCNTs (5 wt.%) and graphene nanoflakes (5 wt.%) and MXene (10 wt.%) were added to TiO2 and prepared in a paste form by mixing the sensing material with the organic binder. The sensing film was deposited on an alumina substrate using a screen-printing technique and annealed at 500 °C for 30 min in ambient air. The crystallinity of TiO2 and the doped material in the sensing film after the annealing treatment were verified using FESEM, EDX, XRD and Raman Spectroscopy. By depositing an interdigitated electrode at the bottom of the sensing film, the thick film gas sensors (TiO2/MWCNT, TiO2/Gr, TiO2/MXene) were exposed to 100–1000 ppm of hydrogen at an operating temperature of 100–250 °C. The responses showed that the addition of MWCNTs and MXene to TiO2 reduced the operating temperature of the TiO2 gas sensor from 150 °C to 100 °C, while the addition of graphene nanoflakes did not affect the operating temperature of the TiO2 gas sensor. The TiO2/MWCNT gas sensor showed linear sensitivity as hydrogen concentrations increased for operating temperatures of 100–250 °C. The optimal operating temperature for TiO2/MXene occurred at 100 °C, while the optimal operating temperature for the TiO2/Gr gas sensor occurred at 200 °C. The highest sensitivity for 100–500 ppm hydrogen was generated by the TiO2/MXene gas sensor, and for 600–1000 ppm hydrogen was generated by the TiO2/MWCNT gas sensor at an operating temperature of 250 °C. The TiO2/MWCNT gas sensor produced the highest sensitivity to hydrogen at the operating temperature of 250 °C with sensitivity values of approximately 6.36, 33.61, 67.64, 102.23 and 159.07 for 100, 300, 500, 700 ppm and 1000 ppm of hydrogen, respectively.

Synthesis and characterization of graphene/carbon nanotube hybrid: effects of Ni catalyst thickness and H2 flow rate on growth and morphological structure

Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Tuzluca Yesilbag, Fatma Nur; Huseyin, Ahmad; Tuzluca, Metin; Ismail, Ismayadi; Ertugrul, Mehmet

We reported a combination of the unique properties of (2D) graphene and (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by synthesizing a novel graphene/CNTs hybrid structure. Graphene and CNTs were synthesized by a two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. In the first step, multilayer graphene (MLG) was grown on nickel substrates by changing the methane gas flow rate and growth time. In the second step, the CNTs were then grown on the synthesized MLG surface previously. Both the Ni catalyst film thickness and H2 gas flow rate were changed to investigate their effects on the growth densities and average diameters of the hybrid structures. Structural and morphological analysis of both MLG and MLG/CNT hybrid structures were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman analysis. As the Ni catalyst film thickness was increased, CNTs grew more densely on the MLG. It was observed that CNTs with smaller diameters and longer lengths formed with increasing H2 gas flow rate. This hybrid structure is useful in electronic, optoelectronic, and energy storage applications.

Tuzluca, Fatma Nur; Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Ertugrul, Mehmet

In this study performed using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system, one-dimensional (1-D) single crystal indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) nanotowers, nanobouqets, nanocones, and nanowires were investigated as a candidate for a supercapacitor electrode material. These nanostructures were grown via Vapor–Liquid–Solid (VLS) and Vapor–Solid (VS) mechanisms according to temperature differences (1000–600 °C). The morphologies, growth mechanisms and crystal structures of these 1-D single crystal In 2 O 3 nanostructures were defined by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman Spectroscopy analyses. The elemental analyses of the nanostructures were carried out by energy dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS); they gave photoluminescence (PL) spectra with 3.39, 2.65, and 1.95 eV band gap values, corresponding to 365 nm, 467 nm, and 633 wavelengths, respectively. The electrochemical performances of these 1-D single crystal In 2 O 3 nanostructures in an aqueous electrolyte solution (1 M Na 2 SO 4 ) were determined by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Galvanostatic Charge Discharge (GCD) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analyses. According to GCD measurements at 0.04 mA cm −2 current density, areal capacitance values were 10.1 mF cm −2 and 6.7 mF cm −2 for nanotowers, 12.5 mF cm −2 for nanobouquets, 4.9 mF cm −2 for nanocones, and 16.6 mF cm −2 for nanowires. The highest areal capacitance value was observed in In 2 O 3 nanowires, which retained 66.8% of their initial areal capacitance after a 10000 charge-discharge cycle, indicating excellent cycle stability.

Effects of graphite on the synthesis of 1-D single crystal In2O3 nanostructures at high temperature

Tuzluca, Fatma Nur; Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Akkus, Tuba; Ertugrul, Mehmet

This study investigated the effects of graphite powder on the growth mechanisms of one-dimensional (1-D) single-crystal indium oxide (In2O3) nanostructures. The study was conducted using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method at 1000 °C; In2O3 and graphite powder mixed with In2O3, with a weight ratio of 1:1, were used as the source material, while 2 nm-thick n-type silicon (100), coated with a gold catalyst, was used as a substrate. It was observed that nanostructures grew via a Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) growth mechanism when only In2O3 was used, but grew via both VLS and Vapor-Solid (VS) growth mechanisms when graphite powder was used with the In2O3. The morphology and crystal structures of the nanostructures grown were investigated using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersion X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). At room temperature (RT), all the nanostructures showed photoluminescence (PL) spectra at a wavelength of 367 nm in the UV-emission region and at wavelengths of 470 and 630 nm in the visible region.

Investigation of temperature, catalyst thickness and substrate effects in In2O3 nanostructures

Tuzluca, Fatma Nur; Yesilbag, Yasar Ozkan; Ertugrul, Mehmet

This study successfully synthesized In2O3 nanotowers (NTs), nanowires (NWs), nanochains (NChs) and nanocrystals (NCs) on n-type Si(100) and quartz substrates at temperature of 900–1000 °C by using Au catalysts via the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technique. The analyses of experimental results revealed that In2O3 nanostructures (NSs) grew in different morphologies due to variable parameters, such as temperature, thickness of catalyst and substrate type. This was because these In2O3 NSs were formed by both the Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) and the Vapor-Solid (VS) growth mechanisms. For instance, In2O3 NTs and NChs were formed by the VLS growth mechanism; In2O3 NCs were formed by the VS growth mechanism and In2O3 NWs were formed by both the VLS and VS growth mechanisms. Morphology and crystal structures were identified through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Moreover, photoluminescence (PL) peaks of In2O3 NSs were measured to be 367 nm, 470 nm, and 630 nm at room temperature (RT). These measurement results indicated that structural, morphological, compositional and optical properties of synthesized In2O3 NSs correlated with growth parameters.

Optical properties of ZnO nanorods on glass via spray deposition of solution containing zinc chloride and thiourea

Sonmez, Erdal; Karacali, Tevhit; Ekinci, Ali Ercan; Ertugrul, Mehmet

In this research paper, we have investigated optical properties of two zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods specimens grew on a glass by spray deposition of a solution, which contains only zinc chloride ( ZnCl2) and ZnCl 2 with small amount of thiourea (tu: CH4N2S). We sprayed a 1 mL of each solution onto a glass in every minute to obtain a 50 mL specimen. The prepared specimens were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UVVis absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. We have observed from SEM measurements that small addition of thiourea into a ZnCl2 solution (ZnCl2:tu = 1:0.25) provides significantly thinner ZnO nanorods with a higher aspect ratio compared to that obtained from only ZnCl2 solution. It is noted that this addition considerably decreased the diameter of ZnO nanorods to 500 nm and increased the height to approximately 200 nm. This is desirable in nanotechnology applications. However, it is observed from PL measurements that optical properties of ZnO nanorods prepared from ZnCl2 and thiourea solution deteriorate.
