The aim of this study is to explore whether newspaper articles can be used as speaking materials in foreign language courses as they include most authentic language patterns. A quasi-experimental study has been carried out at Vocational School of Tourism and Hotel Services in Erzincan University. Thirty-eight preparatory students took part in the study. Speaking courses were designed to include newspaper articles. The study provided evidence to prove the hypothesis: 'Language should be taught by original materials and spoken language is best acquired when it is obtained from authentic sources' (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Self-determination theory (SDT), one of motivation theories, divides learning contexts into two groups as autonomy-supportive and controlled climated according to teachers' behaviours. Autonomy-supportive climates are associated with teacher behaviours which facilitate students' learning, and mostly related to intrinsic motivation, higher perceived competence, higher academic achievement and classroom engagement. Unlike autonomy-supportive ones, controlled climates are connected with teacher behaviours which have detrimental effects on students' learning, and related to amotivation, extrinsic motivation, negative emotions towards learning, less academic achievement, dropping out of school. Considering these facts, this study hypothesized that learning climates' being perceived as autonomy supportive or controlled would be closely associated with students' perception about their English speaking competence, achievement in English speaking and classroom engagement. To test the hypothesis, 55 Turkish EFL preparatory-first graders chosen according to convenience sampling completed a four-section form including a learning climate questionnaire, a perceived competence scale, an engagement question and demographic questions including gender, age group, last examination score. Descriptive and correlation analyses of the data supported the hypothesis. Findings showed that speaking course teachers created an autonomous environment and their students had high levels of perceived competence in speaking. In addition, autonomy-supportive teacher behaviours were positively correlated with perceived competence (p<.05). Furthermore, these behaviours were siginificantly and positively correlated with students' engagement in English speaking lessons and achievements (p<.01). (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. This paper investigates the relationship between teachers' job satisfaction and organizational commitment and evaluates whether teachers' age moderates the relationship between their job satisfaction and organizational commitment in Turkey case. All constructs were measured using instruments sourced from the extant literature and the questionnaire used in this study is designed to examine the relationships between job satisfaction, organizational commitment and age among teachers. The study specifically targeted teachers in secondary schools. In all, 432 copies of the questionnaire were distributed; 173 were returned and sixteen of them were excluded because they were incomplete; giving a response rate of 36%, which was deemed acceptable. The results of this study have some important implications for school managers and teachers. Organizational commitment positively correlated with job satisfaction. We suggest that age differences among teachers have moderating effect on relationships between their job satisfaction and organizational commitment and these relationships are nonlinear. The role of age in relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment is worth investigating further. Our findings highlight the need to consider differences of teachers' age and school authorities need to develop strategies to deal with the needs of those teachers who experience less job satisfaction and commitment. This study aims to determine the views of NOS of pre-service elementary teachers who are in the position of students. Also, it will be analyzed whether the pre-service student teachers' views on NOS will change thanks to education in their faculties. That is, analyzing the elementary teachers' views on NOS according to their academic level; it will be investigated whether there is any statistically significant difference. The study consists of 263 students of different academic levels who attended the department of elementary teaching in the education faculty of Bayburt in the 2008-2009 academic years. At the end of the study, it can be said that the faculties of education fulfill the post they take on. However it has been determined that the candidates do not have contemporary views on nature of science, but positive views. The faculties of education makes students acquire a view of the nature of science but cannot make them have a contemporary view of the nature of science. This results from the fact that teacher candidates cannot develop their views on the nature of science in their educational life before they come to education faculty. For this reason it is necessary that the students at every level develop their view on the nature of science. In this way, for the candidates acquiring the viewpoint of the nature of science will become easier.

The term "scientific literacy" has become a dominant educational slogan and a major goal for science education in many countries over the past two decades. Although a scientifically literate society is an ultimate goal of science education in Turkey, as well as in other countries, there is not much information on scientific literacy levels even for people who deal with science first-hand. Whether people who deal with science, such as scientists and science teachers, have adequate levels of scientific literacy is still open to investigation. This study aimed to examine scientific literacy levels of pre-service science teachers at different grade levels (different class, eg., first year Science Teacher Training Departments' students). One of the aims of this study is investigating effectuality of the education faculties about developing scientific literacy. The study examined whether there is a statistically meaningful difference among science literacy levels of pre-service science teachers at different grade levels. The data obtained from the study contributed to determine at what levels scientific literacy of pre-service teachers were. Furthermore, it provided to be observed how the education in the Faculty of Education had affected scientific literacy levels of pre-service teachers as well. So, it is thought to make contribution to understanding how Education Faculties could perform the mission for which they are responsible in providing these students as teachers of the future with scientific literacy being one of the features a good teacher needs to have.

Test anxiety is concerned about a large portion of our society (students, family environment). The portion affected from the test anxiety is increasing year by year. Test anxiety is not related with studying or studying much. The idea that studying much and getting new knowledge cause anxiety and stress is common. A student being tired by studying much can rest after a brief relaxation and exercise. What creates the anxiety is the fear of being unsuccessful and the thought that is the end of some values because of the failure. Determination of students' test anxiety is very important for the success in applied teaching activities. In this study intending to determine secondary school students' test anxiety, test anxiety scale and data collected from interviews were evaluated from the view of gender, class grades and enrolled educational institutions. After the analyses gained by descriptive statistical techniques and One-Way ANOVA, it was found that the students had mid-level test anxiety, and girls had higher test anxiety level than boys.
