Barbarea species belonging to the Brassicaceae family contain glucosinolates, flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponosides, fatty acids, and other bioactive compounds. These compounds are reported to exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, antiproliferative, and herbicidal effects, as well as beneficial effects on metabolic diseases. In particular, organosulfur and polyphenolic compounds have been reported to exhibit inhibitory effects on enzymes such as cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, nitric oxide synthase, pancreatic lipase, lipoprotein lipase, and glucosidase. In this study, the inhibitory activities of methanol extracts, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and remaining aqueous subfractions obtained from the aerial parts of B. auriculata var. paludosa Coode& Cullen and B. plantaginea DC on pancreatic lipase, cholesterol esterase, and α-glucosidase enzymes were investigated for the first time. When the results obtained in the study are evaluated, the ethyl acetate subfraction of B. plantaginea exhibited the strongest pancreatic lipase and cholesterol esterase inhibitory activities, with IC₅₀ values of 111.687 ± 1.291 µg/mL and 10.718 ± 0.308 µg/mL, respectively. For α-glucosidase inhibition, the methanol extract of B. auriculata subsp. paludosa demonstrated the highest activity with an IC₅₀ value of 135.207 ± 0.136 µg/mL. it is seen that the ethyl acetate subfraction of both species has stronger cholesterol esterase inhibitory effects, moderate lipase and glucosidase inhibitory effects.

Plant–pollinator interactions are fundamental to reproductive success, yet remain understudied in the Turkish ecological context, particularly for endemic species. This study investigates pollinator diversity, behavior, and environmental influences in two rare Scrophularia L. species endemic to Erzincan, Türkiye: S. fatmae and S. erzincanica. Field observations conducted between 2019 and 2020 documented floral visitors, visitation frequency, and the role of floral morphology in guiding pollinator behavior. Climatic variables such as temperature, humidity, and wind were also analyzed in relation to pollinator activity. The high-altitude S. fatmae was visited exclusively by Bombus niveatus, which proved effective even under cold and windy conditions, whereas S. erzincanica attracted a more diverse community, including Halictus quadricinctus, Halictus sp., and Lasioglossum pauxillum, the efficiency of pollination was strongly linked to floral architecture; clustered flowers and staminodes enhanced pollinator guidance and cross-pollination. Statistical comparisons further highlighted differences in body size and foraging strategies between pollinator groups. Environmental conditions were shown to significantly limit pollinator activity, with high humidity and low temperatures reducing visitation. Additionally, unexpected warming events accelerated phenology in S. fatmae, indicating potential risks from climate change. Overall, this research provides novel insights into the functional ecology of endemic Scrophularia species, demonstrating how floral traits, pollinator behavior, and environmental variables interact to shape reproductive strategies. These findings contribute to biodiversity conservation efforts and underscore the importance of long-term monitoring under changing climatic conditions.

Introduction: Studies on different species of Onobrychis, a member of the Fabaceae family, have revealed a number of biological activities with potential applications in alternative medicine. The phytochemical content of the plant Onobrychis argyrea subsp. argyrea and some of the important biological activities linked to its metabolism are quite limited. Therefore, this study was the first to determine the content of secondary metabolites in this species and to elucidate important biological activities related to metabolism. Methods: LC-MS/MS was used for the quantitative analysis of bioactive compounds in the aerial part of O. argyrea extracts. The antioxidant properties of the extracts were assessed based on their ability to scavenge DPPH radicals and reduce iron ions. The anti-diabetic effect of the extracts was tested by the inhibition of α-amylase and α-glycosidase enzymes, and the anti-Alzheimer's ability was tested by the inhibition of the enzymes AChE and BChE. The cytotoxic effects of the extracts were tested on four different cancer lines, namely A-549, HT-29, MCF-7 and MDA-MB 453 using the XTT assay. The mechanism of the anti-cancer effect was determined by means of flow cytometry analysis on HT-29 cells. Results: Twenty-nine phytochemicals were identified via the LC-MS/MS analysis in the plant extracts. The most abundant phytochemicals in the extracts were quinic acid, isoquercitrin, epicatechin, and routine, respectively. Antioxidant analysis showed that among all extracts, methanol extract (ME) was most effective in scavenging DPPH (IC50: 23.93 ± 0.96 µg/mL) and in reducing iron ions (53.24 ± 2.14 mgTEAC/g). Enzyme activity studies demonstrated that ME is a potent inhibitor of α-glycosidase (IC50: 15.06±0.64 µg/mL), AChE (IC50: 24.75±0.76 µg/mL), and BChE (IC50: 3.36±0.14 µg/mL). XTT assay results disclosed the strongest anti-proliferative activity of ME against the human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT-29 cell line with an IC50 value of 33.35±0.92 µg/mL. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that ME caused mitochondrial membrane damage in HT-29 cells (**p<0.01) and subsequently induced apoptosis (**p<0.01) by activating the caspase pathway (**p<0.001). Conclusion: O. argyrea, rich in bioactive compounds, showed remarkable antioxidant, antidiabetic, Alzheimer's, and anticancer properties in vitro, demonstrating that this plant contains secondary metabolites that may be potential drug candidates for the treatment of metabolic diseases.

The ecological interactions between plants and pollinators significantly contribute to global diversity. Hence, focusing on the phenology of plants at various altitudes yields valuable insights into understanding how climate change impacts ecosystems and its association with evolutionary processes. Specifically, this study examines Scrophularia erzincanica, a species native to Erzincan (Türkiye), adapted to lower altitudes, and S. fatmae, an obligate alpine species. The aim was to elucidate the phenological, ecological, and floral characteristics relevant to pollination in both species comparatively. Significant differences were observed in the duration of phenological events, inflorescence architecture, style, and staminode position. Notably, S. fatmae exhibited longer durations for phenological events. Additionally, distinct floral arrangements were evident S. fatmae displayed clustered flowers while S. erzincanica exhibited loosely distributed ones. In S. erzincanica, the staminode's placement in the middle of the corolla created a physical barrier, potentially preventing nectar theft, influencing pollinator selection, prolonging their visit duration, and coordinating flower movements triggered by pollinators. Conversely, in S. fatmae, the staminode remained concealed and positioned near the corolla base. Pollinator visits were shorter in S. fatmae but longer in S. erzincanica. The harsher environmental conditions and lower pollinator density and diversity in alpine regions compared to lower altitudes likely contribute to these differences. Despite sharing common ancestors, these observed phenological disparities in species might stem from selective pressures exerted by varying altitudes, driving these species along divergent evolutionary paths.

The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical components and evaluate the antifungal activity of Origanum acutidens essential oil. The aerial parts of O. acutidens were collected, and the hydrodistillation method was used to extract the essential oil. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was performed to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil. The main components identified were α-terpineol (4.76%), p-cymene (7.6%), linalool (14.82%), and carvacrol (49.4%). The essential oils were tested against two pathogens in vitro experiments to evaluate their antifungal activity. Different concentrations of the essential oil were applied, and the inhibition of mycelial growth was measured. The results demonstrated that the essential oil exhibited antifungal properties against both pathogens. At a dose of 4.8 µL/Petri dish, the mycelial growth of both pathogens was completely inhibited. However, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum showed higher tolerance to the essential oil compared to Phytophthora infestans. Furthermore, a dose-effect study was conducted as a part of this research. The LC50 values (lethal concentration at which 50% of the pathogens' growth is inhibited) for P. infestans and S. sclerotiorum were calculated as 0.982 µL/Petri and 1.61 µL/Petri, respectively. The study concluded that the essential oil of O. acutidens has the potential to be a natural antifungal agent, particularly against S. sclerotiorum and P. infestans. However, further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms of action and explore potential applications of this essential oil in managing plant diseases.

Obesity, defined as New World Syndrome, causes global health problems and big economic losses. Natural products have gained increasing importance because of their antiobesity potency. The genus Jurinea Cass. with approximately 200 described species worldwide has been traditionally used as a therapeutic agent for colic, fever, gout and rheumatism. The aim of this study was to analyze the volatile components, to determine phenolic compounds and to evaluate α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and lipase inhibitory activities of the endemic plant species Jurinea brevicaulis Boiss. The widely used solid-phase microextraction technique (SPME) was employed for Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis of the volatile components. Quantitative analysis of phenolic compounds was performed using Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC). A total of 19 volatile components were specified and o-cymene (10.60 %), β-bisabolene (9.30 %), and sesquicineole (57.5 %) for different terpenes were described as major components. According to the RP-HPLC analysis, sinapic acid, p-coumaric acid and quercetin were determined for the species. IC50 values of the species were determined as 36.59 ± 2.37 μg/mL and 42.56 ± 2.83 μg/mL for α-amylase and α-glucosidase assays, respectively. IC50 value was found as 50.31 ± 3.75 μg/mL with the lipase inhibition analysis. In conclusion, it has been determined that J. brevicaulis included diverse volatile components, three phenolic compounds with antiobesity effect potential, which highlights J. brevicaulis as the up-and-coming candidate of natural product source to be used against obesity.

Objective: Parasites and plant seeds may both be found in appendectomy specimens. Each plant seed has a different appearance and can thus exhibit wide variations under the microscope. Fragmented seeds may histologically mimic parasites. The differential diagnosis between seeds and parasites can be challenging in such cases. This study aimed to determine the incidence of parasites, seeds, and foreign bodies in appendectomy materials and highlight the most characteristic histopathological features associated with these structures. Material and Method: In this study, pathology slides of 9,480 patients, who underwent appendectomy between 2010 and 2021, were reviewed, and cases that contained parasites, seeds, or foreign bodies were identified. We reviewed the literature on seeds and parasites in appendectomy specimens. Results: Parasites were observed in 56 (0.6%) cases. Of these cases, 45 had Enterobius vermicularis (80%), and 11 had Taenia subspecies (20%). Plant seeds were observed in 47 cases (0.5%), and were macroscopically recognizable in 5 of them as olive, lemon, and cherry seeds. Parasites and seeds were usually observed in the lumen of appendix vermiformis, filled with abundant fecal materials. Conclusion: Seeds are seen in approximately 0.5% of the appendectomy specimens. Though rarely seen, the fragmented seed appearance may cause diagnostic difficulties. In this context, the key morphological features of parasites and plant seeds outlined in this study may be helpful in their differential diagnosis.
