Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) triggers important changes in routine blood tests. In this retrospective case-control study, biochemical, hematological and inflammatory biomarkers between March 10, 2020, and November 30, 2020 from 3969 COVID-19 patients (3746 in the non-intensive care unit (non-ICU) group and 223 in the ICU group) were analyzed by dividing into three groups as spring, summer and autumn. In the non-ICU group, lymphocyte to monocyte ratio was lower in autumn than the other two seasons and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio was higher in autumn than the other two seasons. Also, monocyte and platelet were higher in spring than autumn; and eosinophil, hematocrit, hemoglobin, lymphocyte, and red blood cells decreased from spring to autumn. In the non-ICU group, alanine aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyltransferase gradually increased from spring to autumn, while albumin, alkaline phosphatase, calcium, total bilirubin and total protein gradually decreased. Additionally, C-reactive protein was higher in autumn than the other seasons, erythrocyte sedimentation rate was higher in autumn than summer. The changes in routine blood biomarkers in COVID-19 varied from the emergence of the disease until now. Also, the timely changes of blood biomarkers were mostly more negative, indicating that the disease progresses severely. The study was approved by the Erzincan Binali Yildirim University Non-interventional Clinical Trials Ethic Committee (approval No. 86041) on June 21, 2021.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the virus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In the literature, this virus has been associated with coagulation dysfunction and arterial thromboembolism. In clinical practice, corpus callosum infarcts are very rare, and the incidence of isolated splenium infarct is very low. Here, two cases of isolated splenium infarct after COVID-19 are reported with clinical and imaging findings. These findings are thought to be useful in daily practice for our colleagues. In addition, differential diagnoses of this entity will also be discussed in this case report.

Radiologists should be aware of the findings of alveolar echinococcosis (AE) due to the diagnostic and management value of imaging. We are attempting to define the most common diagnostic imaging findings of liver AE, along with the prevalence and distribution of those findings. The patients’ US, CT, and MRI images were reviewed retrospectively. CT images were acquired with and without the administration of contrast medium. The MRI protocol includes T2-weighted images (WI), diffusion (WI), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps, and pre-and post-contrast T1WIs. The current study included 61 patients. The mean age of the population was 58.2 ± 9.6 years According to Kratzer’s categorization (US), 139 lesions (73.1%) were categorized as hailstorm. According to Graeter’s classification (CT), 139 (73.1%) lesions were type 1-diffuse infiltrating. The most frequent types were Kodama type 2 and 3 lesions (MRI) (42.6% and 48.7%, accordingly). P2N0M0 was the most frequent subtype. The current study defines the major, characteristic imaging findings of liver AE using US, CT, and MRI. Since US, CT, and MRI have all been utilized to diagnose AE, we believe that a multi-modality classification system is needed. The study’s findings may aid radiologists in accurately and timely diagnosing liver AE.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - Review ArticleAçık Erişim2022The distribution in joint recesses and adjacent synovial compartments of loose bodies determined on MR and CT arthrographies of ankle joint
Ogul, Hayri; Cankaya, Bahar; Kantarci, Mecit
Loose bodies (LBs) are intraarticular free bodies that result from various pathological processes and cause synovial inflammation. Timely and complete identification of LBs is important for appropriate treatment and prevention of possible complications such as osteoarthritis. LBs in the ankle joint can reach all the compartments that are adjacent to the joint via physiological or pathological connections. The presence, localisation, and number of LBs in the ankle joint and adjacent synovial compartments can be optimally evaluated using highresolution magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) and computed tomography arthrography (CTA). On this review article, we aimed to determine the LB location and distribution using high-resolution MRA and CTA of the ankle joint, and to demonstrate that it may be used as a complementary examination to guide interventional arthroscopy in difficult-to-reach areas during treatment. Advances in knowledge Loose bodies (LBs) are intraarticular free bodies and may cause synovial inflammation. Accurate and complete determination of the number and location of LBs before surgery are very important for effective treatment. The location, number and distribution of LBs in the ankle joint may be determined successfully by high-resolution magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) and computed tomography arthrography (CTA). For this purpose, MRA and CTA may increase the diagnostic and therapeutic success of the arthroscopy.

Objective: Oxytocin (OXT) has been reported to have promising therapeutic potential due to its antioxidant properties in vincristine (VCR) and cisplatin (CP) induced peripheral neuropathy in both in vivo and in vitro studies. The cerebral cortex is responsible for sense, perception, and memory. Damage to these parts of the brain can lead to impairment of central nervous system functions. However, the effectiveness of OXT in toxicity caused by vincristine and cisplatin in cortical neurons has not been reported. In this study,we aimed to investigate the effects of OXT in VCR and CP-induced cortical neuron cell culture toxicity via biochemically measuring TAS-TOS levels and immunohistochemically determining 8-OHDG expression. Methods: Cortical neuronal cells were exposed to different concentrations of VCR and CP, and also after the neuronal cells were exposed to OXT (1 μM) for 5 minutes, VCR and CP concentrations were applied to the cells. Cell viability was determined using the MTT method. TAC and TOS were measured for antioxidant/oxidant activity. The expression of 8-OHdG was investigated as an indicator of oxidative DNA damage. Results: Administration of OXT before CP and VCR exposure was able to protect against neuronal cytotoxicity. TAS levels increased positively correlated with in cells exposed to OXT+ VCR and OXT+ CP, while TOS levels and DNA damage (8-OHdG levels) negatively correlated. Conclusion: OXT alleviated the toxic effects of VCR and CP-induced cortical neuron toxicity by increasing the TAS levels, while decreasing TOS levels and DNA damages. According to the results of this study, OXT has the potential to be used protective agent for anticancer agents induced toxicity. However, further studies are needed to clarify mechanisms of action of OXT.

Background: During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, patients present to hospitals with a wide range of symptoms. Some of these symptoms include acute orchitis and epididymitis. The goal of this research is to see if COVID-19 infection and scrotal infection are associated. Materials and methods: Patients with a COVID-19 (+) who agreed to a scrotal ultrasound (US) examination were studied prospectively in a tertiary care center between October 2021 and February 2022. The severity of the disease was used to divide patients into groups. Patients diagnosed with acute scrotal infection based on scrotal ultrasonography findings were compared in these groups, as were their age, comorbidities, and laboratory data. Results: The median age of the 213 participants was 61.7 ± 8.3. During the ultrasonographic examination of the patients, 15 (7%), 8 (3.7%), 17 (7.9%), and 40 (18.7%) were diagnosed with acute orchitis, acute epididymitis, acute epididymo-orchitis, and scrotal infection, respectively. Acute scrotal infection was far more common in patients with a higher clinical severity of the disease. The patients' comorbidities were also assessed, and it was discovered that they were statistically more common in the same group. Conclusions: Even if there are no clinical symptoms, ultrasonography can help detect acute scrotal infection in COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, in groups with higher clinical severity, this association is more likely to be seen. It is critical to understand this in order to avoid complications.

(1) Background: Various epidemiological studies suggest that oxidative stress and disrupted neuronal function are mechanistically linked to neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), including Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). DNA damage, oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and eventually, cell death such as NDs can be induced by nitrosamine-related compounds, leading to neurodegeneration. A limited number of studies have reported that exposure to diethylnitrosamine (DEN), which is commonly found in processed/preserved foods, causes biochemical abnormalities in the brain. Artichoke leaves have been used in traditional medicine as a beneficial source of bioactive components such as hydroxycinnamic acids, cynarine, chlorogenic acid, and flavonoids (luteolin and apigenin). The aim of this study is to investigate the favorable effects of exogenous artichoke (Cynara scolymus) methanolic leaf extract supplementation in ameliorating DEN-induced deleterious effects in BALB/c mouse brains. (2) Methods: This study was designed to evaluate DEN (toxicity induction by 100 mg/kg) and artichoke (protective effects of 0.8 and 1.6 g/kg treatment) for 14 days. All groups underwent a locomotor activity test to evaluate motor activity. In brain tissue, oxidative stress indicators (TAC, TOS, and MDA), Klotho and PPARγ levels, and apoptotic markers (Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3) were measured. Brain slices were also examined histopathologically. (3) Results: Artichoke effectively ameliorated DEN-induced toxicity with increasing artichoke dose. Impaired motor function and elevated oxidative stress markers (decreasing MDA and TOS levels and increasing TAC level) induced by DEN intoxication were markedly restored by high-dose artichoke treatment. Artichoke significantly improved the levels of Klotho and PPARγ, which are neuroprotective factors, in mouse brain tissue exposed to DEN. In addition, caspase-3 and Bax levels were reduced, whereas the Bcl-2 level was elevated with artichoke treatment. Furthermore, recovery was confirmed by histopathological analysis. (4) Conclusions: Artichoke exerted neuroprotective effects against DEN-induced brain toxicity by mitigating oxidant parameters and exerting antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects. Further research is needed to fully identify the favorable impact of artichoke supplementation on all aspects of DEN brain intoxication.

Background: Some patients continue to experience symptoms related to Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) after the acute phase of infection. Imaging studies, especially computed tomography (CT) of the chest, have gained importance since the beginning of the pandemic. CT can help diagnose COVID-19, assess the extent of pulmonary involvement, and predict the disease severity. We aimed to define the frequency of persistent symptoms and correlate their presence with the results of laboratory findings and the severity of the disease based on the findings of chest CT. Methods: We examined patients discharged from the hospital after treatment for COVID-19 and whose nasopharyngeal swab sample tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 after at least 4 weeks from the initial diagnosis. The patients were asked about the presence of persisting symptoms. In addition to the demographic data, laboratory results and severity levels seen on the chest CT were recorded. Results: In all, 116 patients were included in the study, of which 61 reported at least one persisting symptom (52.5%). The mean age of the study population was 48.90 ± 17.74 years. The persistent symptoms included shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, muscle weakness, dizziness, headache, fatigue, and palpitations. The mean CT severity score was 3.80 ± 0.38 and it was lower in patients without any persistent symptoms. Conclusions: Levels of C-reactive protein and fibrinogen, anemia, and female sex were associated with some of the persistent symptoms., the severity of the disease seen on CT was a successful predictor for the disease severity/prognosis and was also correlated with prolonged COVID infection and more persistent symptoms.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) incidence can increase up to 14%. GDM creates a risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus after pregnancy. Umbilical artery (UA) and fetal middle cerebral artery (MCA) changes in GDM have been studied before. The previous studies have contradictory results. In the current study, we aim to detect and define the impairment of color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS) characteristics in UA and MCA for the pregnant with GDM. Methods: US examinations were all performed at 18-22 weeks of gestation with a 3.5 MHz convex transducer. We recorded peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity, pulsatility index, resistive index, and systole/diastole ratio values of both UA and MCA at 18-22 weeks of gestation. GDM diagnosis was created according to the American Diabetes Association guidelines. Results: Sixty GDM patients and 61 healthy controls were included into the study. Median MCA PSV value was lower in GDM group (28 cm/s vs. 32 cm/s, P = 0.37). Among UA CDUS parameters, we cannot find any significant difference. In GDM group, we could not detect any significant correlation between CDUS parameters and HbA1C values. Conclusion: GDM changes fetal brain hemodynamics and the change can be detected at 18-22 weeks of gestation. Decreased fetal MCA PSV values can serve as an early warning for GDM.

Fatihoglu, Erdem; Aydin, Sonay; Karavas, Erdal; Kantarci, Mecit
Introduction and objectives: The wide range of variability of SS pneumatization and relation with surrounding structures can result in serious complications; seeing that, the assessment of regional anatomy is essential for both surgeons and radiologists. We mainly aim to reveal the possible correlation between the SS pneumatization types and protrusion/dehiscence of the adjacent neurovascular structures in a larger population by using computerized tomography (CT) images. Methods: The type of SS pneumatization (I–IV), pneumatization of anterior clinoid process (ACP), greater wing of sphenoid (GWS), and pterygoid process (PP) was evaluated. Protrusion and dehiscence of ICA, ON, MN, and VN was noted. Results: 1003 patients were included into the study. ICA, ON, and MN protrusions were not seen in patients with the type I or II SS on both sides. These protrusions were most frequently seen along with the type IV SS on both sides (p < 0.05). ICA, ON, MN, and VN dehiscence was not found in any patients with the type I SS. The rate of ICA protrusion increased with presence of GWS and PP; ICA dehiscence was found to be positively correlated with ACP, GWS, and PP pneumatization. Conclusions: Variations, either amount or the extent, of the pneumatization of the SS are related with the presence of protrusion/dehiscence of ICA, ON, MN and VN. Knowing and reporting these relations can decrease the rate of complications during skull base surgery.

Introduction: Normal pancreatic thickness values on ultrasound (US) have been defined in literature. However, there is insufficient information about normal pancreatic measurements acquired from computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To define normal pancreatic thickness measurements acquired from different localizations in order to provide reference values for more objectively identified parenchymal thickness changes. Materials and methods: A retrospective evaluation was made of the abdominal MRI examinations of 162 pediatric patients. Patients with any pancreatic disease, or chronic gastrointestinal inflammatory disease were excluded from the study. Measurements were taken from T2-weighted images. Results: Evaluation was made of 162 children, comprising 82 (50.6%) males and 80 (49.3%) females with a mean age of 9.8 ± 2.4 years. Mean pancreatic thickness was 18.3 ± 3.1 mm, 10.2 ± 2.9 mm, 14.9 ± 3 mm, 14.9 ± 3.3 mm in head, neck, body and tail localizations, accordingly. A positive correlation was determined between age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and pancreatic thickness in all the anatomic localizations (r > 0.55, p < 0.05). No significant difference was determined with gender. Interobserver agreement between two researchers was moderate and strong according to the different anatomic localizations. Conclusions: The defined normal ranges are mostly consistent with previously published US and CT based values. Pancreatic thickness values were positively correlated with age, height, weight and BMI for all four anatomical regions of the pancreas. Knowledge of normal pancreatic thickness values will increase the diagnostic accuracy of radiologists in the assessment of pancreatic diseases and may aid in interpreting atrophy in the setting of chronic pancreatitis.
RDL Kalıcı Kaydıİncele - Review ArticleAçık Erişim2021Posterior shoulder labrocapsular structures in all aspects; 3D volumetric MR arthrography study
Ogul, Hayri; Taydas, Onur; Sakci, Zakir; Altinsoy, Hasan Baki; Kantarci, Mecit
Pathologies of the posterior labrocapsular structures of the shoulder joint are far less common than anterior labrocapsuloligamentous lesions. Most of these pathologies have been associated with traumatic posterior dislocation. A smaller portion of the lesions include posterior extension of superior labral anteroposterior lesions, posterior superior internal impingement, and damage to the posterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament. Labrocapsular anatomic variations of the posterior shoulder joint can mimic labral pathology on conventional MR and occasionally on MR arthrographic images. Knowledge of this variant anatomy is key to interpreting MR images and studying MR arthrography of the posterior labrocapsular structure to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgical procedures. In this article, we review normal and variant anatomy of the posterior labrocapsular structure of the shoulder joint based on MR arthrography and discuss how to discriminate normal anatomic variants from labrocapsular damage.

Taydas, Onur; Ogul, Hayri; Kantarci, Mecit
Purpose: To demonstrate the clinical and radiological features of pericallosal and cisternal lipomas and to compare these two groups in terms of radiological and clinical features. Methods: This retrospective study included 23 patients diagnosed with pericallosal and cisternal lipoma between 2010 and 2017. The patients comprised 12 females and 11 males with a mean age of 38.8 years (range 12–69 years). Magnetic resonance imaging was applied to all the patients. Computed tomography (CT) was also performed in 10 patients. Results: 9 lesions were pericallosal and 14 were cisternal (7 were right quadrigeminal cistern, 3 were left quadrigeminal cistern, 1 was interpeduncular cistern, 1 was left cerebellopontine cistern, 1 was right cerebellopontine cistern, and 1 was supracerebellar cistern). The mean size of the lesions was 18.7 ± 10 mm. The shape of the lesions was curvilinear in 10 patients (43.5%) and tubulonodular in 13 patients (56.5%). The mean CT density of the lesions was − 87.7 ± 25.6 HU. The size of pericallosal lipomas (mean 27.5 mm) was statistically significantly larger than that of cisternal lipomas (mean 13.1 mm) (p = 0.001). No statistically significant difference was determined between the two groups in terms of lesion shape (p = 0.478), gender (p = 0.707), age (p = 0.639), and symptoms (p = 0.084). Conclusions: In this study, the incidence of pericallosal lipomas was 0.011% and the incidence of cisternal lipomas was 0.017%. Although rare, the knowledge of the clinical and radiological features of pericallosal and cisternal lipomas will play an important role in the accurate diagnosis and follow-up of the patient.
