Soil-plant relations in the annual Gypsophila (Caryopyhllaceae) taxa of Turkey

    Korkmaz, Mustafa; Özçelik, Hasan

The soil properties of the annual Gypsophila L. taxa of Turkey and their effects on plant morphology were investigated. The taxa studied were Gypsophila heteropoda Freyn & Sint., G. parva Barkoudah, G. elegans M.Bieb., G. bitlisensis Barkoudah, G. viscosa Murray, G. antari Post & Beauverd, G. muralis L., G. tubulosa (Jaub. & Spach) Boiss., G. confertifolia Hub.-Mor., and G. pilosa Hudson. The soils of the plant taxa were medium textured, sand or sandy-loam, saltless or a little salty, neutral, limy, rich in potassium and with very little phosphorous, and with medium levels of nitrogen and organic matter. G. antari, which had the greatest lime content, had the lowest number of leaves. G. muralis and G. tubulosa had the lowest saturation values and lime content but the greatest number of leaves. If the lime content increased, the development of roots decreased, and when the rate of sand increased, the development of roots increased. For G. muralis, phosphorus concentration, seed size, and salt content were negatively related to number of leaves. For G. tubulosa and G. antari, potassium and organic matter concentrations were negatively related to number of leaves. In G. muralis, salt content was positively related to calyx diameter and seed size. In G. confertifolia, organic matter content was positively correlated with height of the calyx, petal, and bract. It was observed that G. pilosa, G. bitlisensis, and G. viscosa species are also distributed in limeless steppe areas. The most important distribution areas of the species in Turkey are Sivas, Erzincan, Çanki{dotless}ri{dotless}, Eskişehir, and Ankara.

    Özçelik, Hasan; Korkmaz, Mustafa

Annually growing 11 taxa of Gypsophila L. genus in Turkey is the material of this study. These are G.heteropoda Freyn & Sint., G. parva Barkoudah, G. elegans M. Bieb., G. bitlisensis Barkoudah, G. viscosa Murray, G.antari Post & Beauverd G. muralis L., G. tubulosa (Jaub. & Spach) Boiss., G. confertifolia Hub.-Mor. and G. pilosaHudson. Habitat properties were tried to determined and phenological observations were performed in 80 differentlocalities. Characteristics of natural habitats, horizantal and vertical distributions, main rocks, biotic potentials, neigborspecies in the same habitats, the elavation of the habitats and phenological properties of the taxa were investigated. The soils characters of the taxa are generally loamy, unsalty and softly alkaline. Thay have the lime withdifferent ratios (from less to much more) and have very less amount of phosphorus. Their potasium amount is generallymore and the amounts of nitrogen and organic matter are in medium classes. The taxa have vertical distribution from100 m to 2800 m. A lot of them are the members of Irano-Turanian phytogeographic elements according to horizontaldistribution. Because of their distribution in Turkey, they are dominant in Middle, East and South-East Anatolia. Theleast distribution is seen in Euro-Siberian region. So Black-Sea region is the poorest region related with the taxa. G.pilosa is a foreign herb in every condition. The others grow in natural or semi-natural areas. pH values of the soilschanges from 5,97 to 8,21. G. muralis is grown in the smallest pH and G. antari is grown in the biggest pH.Seed germination and vegetative development are seen in Marc-June. Formation of the buds and the flowersare occured in April-Jully. Development and maturation of the seed is complited in May-August and they distribute inJully-September. Wind, water and gravity are the most effective factors for the seed distribution.

Türkiye’de Gypsophila L. cinsinin A grubunu oluşturan tek yıllık taksonları 3 seksiyon altında toplanmıştır. Bu çalışmada Dichoglottis (Fisch. & C.A. Mey.) Fenzl. seksiyonunda yer alan 6 tür (G. heteropoda Freyn & Sint., G. parva Barkoudah, G. elegans M. Bieb., G. bitlisensis Barkoudah, G. viscosa Murray, G. antari Post & Beauverd); Macrorrhizaea Boiss. seksiyonunda yer alan 3 tür (G. muralis L., G. tubulosa (Jaub.

Economic importance of Gypsophila L., Ankyropetalum Fenzl and Saponaria L. (Caryophyllaceae) taxa of Turkey

    Korkmaz, Mustafa; Özçelik, Hasan

Gypsophila L. is the third biggest genus of Caryophyllaceae family in Turkey. The genus has 55 species in the country. 33 species are endemics and total number of the taxa is 58. Ankyropetalum Fenzl is a small genus with 3 species and 1 of them is endemic. Saponaria L. has 20 taxa of 18 species and 10 taxa of them are endemics to Turkey. Turkey is the gene center of all the genera. All of the genera are known as coven, female coven and halva root and developed roots or rhizomes are economically very important. Extract produced from the roots are known as fire extinguisher, gold polishing, cleaner and softener of delicate fabrics and crispness giving to halva. The extracts are often used for making liqueur, herbal cheese, ice cream and some foods. Some taxa are Boron (B) hyperacumulators, so they can be planted and used for destroyed agriculture to control erosion. Gypsophila paniculata L. is very important in horticulture. Gypsophila bicolor, Gypsophila arrostii, Gypsophila perfoliata, Ankyropetalum gypsophiloides and Saponaria officinalis L. are very important because of their saponin contents. In this paper, economic importance of the plants in the light of our observations and literatures was given.
