Objective: The neurological causes of suicide remain poorly understood. This study sought to ascertain whether there is a correlation between amygdala volume and suicidal behavior. Methods: This case–control retrospective study included 193 participants—108 healthy controls and 85 individuals with a history of suicide attempts. Sagittal magnetic resonance imaging was conducted for each participant, and cross-sectional areas of the left and right amygdala were determined independently using freehand tracing. The total volume of the amygdala was determined by multiplying the thickness of the slices by the sum of the regions. Results: Patients with a history of suicide attempts had significantly decreased amygdala volumes on both the right (p = 0.018) and left (p = 0.036) sides compared with controls. Receiver operating characteristic analysis determined a cutoff value of 1825 mm³ for both hemispheres. The cutoff sensitivity and specificity for the right amygdala were 30.6% and 88%, whereas the values for the left amygdala were 31.8% and 84.3%, respectively. Conclusions: This is the first study to show that individuals who had attempted suicide had considerably decreased left and right amygdala volumes, with receiver operating characteristic analysis indicating good specificity (84.3%–88%). According to these findings, a reduced amygdala volume might be a useful biomarker for identifying those who are at risk of attempting suicide. © The Author(s) 2025. Tuncer, Seda Arslan; Yildiz, Sevler; Demirdöğen, Filiz; Akkus, Mustafa; Danacı, Çağla

Objective: One of the serious mental disorders in which people interpret reality in an abnormal situation is schizophrenia. A combination of extremely disordered thoughts, delusions, and hallucinations occurs due to schizophrenia, and the person's daily functions are seriously impaired due to this disease. For general cognitive activity analysis, electroencephalography signals are widely used as a low-resolution diagnostic tool. This study aimed to diagnose schizophrenia using the transfer learning method by including the EEGs of 73 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, and 67 patients from the healthy group. Material and Method: In the first step of the study, digital electroencephalography signal data was converted into spectrograms to make them usable. In the classification phase, ResNet18, ResNet50 and EfficientNet models, which are FastAI, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based deep learning models, were used. Results: Despite the complexity of electroencephalography data, CNN-based models in the study were successful in capturing different aspects of neurophysiological activity. The best performance was obtained from the ResNet-50 model with an accuracy rate of 97%. Afterwards, the classification process was finalized with 95% ResNet-18, and 83% EfficientNet models, respectively. Conclusion: It is thought that the classification performance of the result obtained in the application is promising, and may be a guide for future studies.

Objective: It is known that inflammation plays a role in the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia. In this study, we examined high mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) and Beclin 1 levels and their relationship with clinical variables in patients with schizophrenia. Method: Forty-three patients with schizophrenia and 43 healthy controls were included in this study. The patients were administered sociodemographic data form, the Positive Negative Symptoms Assessment Scale (PANSS) and the Clinical Global Impressions (CGI) scale. After the scales were filled, venous blood samples were taken from both the patient and control groups to measure serum HMGB1 and Beclin 1 levels. Serum samples obtained at the end of centrifugation were measured by Enzyme -Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Results: The mean serum HMGB1 levels were significantly increased and the mean serum Beclin 1 levels were significantly decreased in the schizophrenia group compared to the control group. In addition, a negative correlation was found between HMGB1 and Beclin 1 levels. Conclusion: In conclusion, current research shows that HMGB1 is increased and Beclin 1 is decreased in patients with schizophrenia, and these findings may contribute to the role of autophagy in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.

The impacts of adult separation anxiety disorder on nomophobia

Kılıçaslan, Aslı Kazğan; Kurt, Osman; Yildiz, Sevler; Emir, Burcu Sırlıer

Objective: Based on the idea that there may be a link between smartphone addiction and adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD), our aim was to examine the impacts of ASAD symptoms on nomophobia and whether they predict nomophobia among ASAD patients. Method: We randomly recruited 50 patients diagnosed with ASAD and 50 control subjects satisfying the inclusion criteria. We collected the data using a sociodemographic information form, the Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire (ASA-27), the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Results: Fifty-four percent of the patients had moderate, and 46% showed mild nomophobia symptoms. The results revealed that, compared to healthy controls, the patients had significantly higher scores on the ASA-27, the BDI, the BAI, the NMP-Q (total), the NMP-Q not being able to access information, the NMP-Q giving up convenience, the NMP-Q not being able to communicate, and the NMP-Q losing connectedness (p=0.006 for the NMP-Q giving up convenience; p<0.001 for others). Moreover, the results yielded significant positive relationships between ASAD and the participants' nomophobia total and subscale scores (except for losing connectedness) (p<0.05). Finally, ASAD scores significantly predicted nomophobia, not being able to access information, giving up convenience, and not being able to communicate. Discussion: To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to report nomophobia levels among patients diagnosed with ASAD. The increased severity of separation anxiety symptoms contributed to the severity of nomophobia in the patients, which, in turn, significantly boosted the severity of their depression and anxiety.

Yildiz, Sevler; Atmaca, Murad; Yıldırım, Hanefi; Kılıçaslan, Aslı Kazğan; Emir, Burcu Sırlıer

Aim: Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is a psychiatric disorder with unknown etiopathogenesis that is still under investigation. The results of neuroimaging studies on SSD have shown that some brain regions may be associated with it. In this connection, this study aims to explore the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) morphometric changes in patients with SSD to better comprehend the etiopathogenesis.Material and Methods: The study enrolled 20 patients and 20 healthy controls. All study participants were administered a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A). The volumes of total brain, OFC, total white matter, and total gray matter were measured by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based method in studied patients. Results: Orbitofrontal cortex volume was significantly smaller in the patient group than in healthy controls (p<0.05). No significant difference between the two groups could be observed in total brain, white matter and gray matter volumes (p>0.05).Conclusions: The OFC was markedly smaller in SSD patients than in healthy controls, suggesting that the OFC may be associated with SSD pathophysiology. Future studies examining the functional features of the OFC using imaging and cognitive function tests will likely shed more light on this issue.

Yildiz, Sevler; Uğur, Kerim; Kurt, Osman; Kılıçaslan, Aslı Kazğan; Kılıçarslan, Gülhan

Purpose: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a psychiatric condition where both physical and mental symptoms are observed due to the activation of the sympathetic system. It is known that the disorder affects the cardiovascular system. The present study aimed to analyze arterial stiffness in GAD patients and compare the findings with healthy controls. Materials and Methods: 40 patients diagnosed with GAD and 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. Carotid and femoral artery intima-medial thickness (IMT) and arterial thickness parameters were measured with Doppler ultrasonography. Results: The femoral IMT of the patients was significantly low. Although the carotid IMT was higher in patients when compared to the controls, the difference was not statistically significant. A significant negative correlation was determined between fluoxetine equivalent dose and femoral IMT. There was a correlation between femoral IMT and fluoxetine equivalent dose. Conclusion: Arterial stiffness should be investigated for its potential to indicate cardiovascular risk in GAD. Further comprehensive studies should be conducted to clarify whether atherosclerosis symptoms were associated with the nature of the GAD or prescription medicine.

Yildiz, Sevler; Atmaca, Murad; Kurt, Osman; Korkmaz, Sevda; Kılıçaslan, Aslı Kazğan; Kılıçarslan, Gülhan; Emir, Burcu Sırlıer

Background: It has been known that there is a significant correlation between depres- sion and cardiovascular diseases. However, the reasons behind this correlation that could affect mortality and morbidity were not fully identified. The present study aimed to ana- lyze arterial stiffness diagnosed with ultrasonography, which could be associated with car- diovascular disease risks in depression patients, and to compare the findings with those of healthy controls. Methods: The study was conducted with 35 depression patients and 35 healthy individu- als. Routine complete blood and biochemistry tests were requested for all patients, and their weight and height, waist circumference, and diastolic and systolic arterial blood pressure were measured. Femoral and carotid artery intima-media thickness and other arterial stiffness parameters were determined with Doppler ultrasonography. Results: It was determined that the systolic pressure (P = .028) was higher in the patient group (P = .028). Also, the carotid elastic modulus (P = .048) was significantly higher in the patient group. A negative and significant correlation was determined between femoral compliance and chlorpromazine equivalent dose (P = .021, r = −0.389). Conclusion: It was determined that the systolic blood pressure and carotid elastic modulus arterial stiffness parameters were significantly higher in depression patients. Measurable arterial stiffness parameters should be investigated in depression patients as cardiovas- cular risk markers. Furthermore, the determination of the effects of psychotropic drugs employed in arterial stiffness treatment could play an important role in the determination of cardiovascular disease risk in these patients.

Background: Antisocial personality disorder is a frequently studied personality disorder, and its etiopathogenesis is still investigated. Neuroimaging demonstrated that certain regions of the brain could be associated with this disorder, and in the present study, we aimed to investigate the changes in retina, which could be considered an extension of the brain in antisocial personality disorder patients with optical coherence tomography. Methods: The study was conducted with 35 patients and 35 healthy controls. The study data were collected with the Sociodemographic and Clinical Data Form, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and Barratt Impulsivity Scale—Short Form. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, choroidal thickness, and macular thickness were analyzed based on optical coherence tomography. Results: The Beck Depression Inventory (P= .044), Beck Anxiety Inventory (P = .005), Barratt Impulsivity Scale—motor (P < .001), Barratt Impulsivity Scale—non-planning dimension (P < .001), and Barratt Impulsivity Scale—total scores (P < .001) of the patients were signifi- cantly higher when compared to the controls. The superior (P = .013) and inferior retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (P < .001) of the patients were significantly lower when com- pared to the control group. Conclusion: Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was significantly lower in the patient group when compared to healthy controls, which suggested that it could be associated with the pathophysiology of antisocial personality disorder.

Arterial stiffness in patients with bipolar disorder

Kiliçaslan, Asli Kazgan; Emir, Burcu Sirlier; Yildiz, Sevler; Kiliçaslan, Gölhan; Kurt, Osman

Objective: Bipolar disorder (BD) is an inflammatory and metabolic disease. The disease and the drugs used to treat it may affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The aim of this study is to investigate arterial stiffness in patients with BD and compare them with healthy controls. Methods: Thirty-nine patients with BD type I in remission and 39 healthy control subjects were included in the study. Carotid and femoral artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and arterial thickness parameters were measured by Doppler ultrasonography. Results: The elastic modulus value of the carotid artery was significantly higher in the patients than in the control group (p = 0.015). Although the IMT of both carotid and femoral artery was thicker in patients than in healthy control subjects, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.105; p = 0.391). There was a significant positive correlation between chlorpromazine equivalent dose and femoral elastic modulus value (p = 0.021, r = 0.539). There was a positive correlation between lithium equivalent dose and carotid compliance; a significant negative correlation between lithium equivalent dose and carotid elastic modulus was also determined (both p = 0.007, r = 0.466; p = 0.027, r =-0.391, respectively). No predictor was observed between drug dose and arterial stiffness parameters. Conclusion: Arterial stiffness might be investigated for its potential to reduce CVD risk in patients with BD. Given the established CVD complications in this patient population, further studies are needed to determine whether the results are specific to antipsychotic treatment or BD and to clarify the potential arterial protective effects of mood stabilizers.

Personality Characteristics, Anxiety Sensitivity, Anxiety, and Depression Levels on Patients Diagnosed with Psychogenic Pruritus

Yildiz, Sevler; Atmaca, Murad; Kurt, Osman; Kılıçaslan, Aslı Kazğan

Background: This study aimed to investigate the personality traits, anxiety sensitivity (AS), anxiety, and depression levels in patients diagnosed with psychogenic pruritus (PP). Certain personality traits may come to the fore in psychosomatic disorders; these traits are thought to make the person vulnerable to psychosomatic diseases. This study aimed to investigate the personality traits, anxiety sensitivity (AS), anxiety, and depression levels in patients diagnosed with psychogenic pruritus (PP). Methods: Thirty-seven patients diagnosed with PP (patient group) and 21 healthy con- trols were included in the study. Sociodemographic Data Form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3), and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) were administered to all participants. Results: Patients’ EPQ scores for the extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and lie subdi- mensions and EPQ-total scores were significantly higher than those of the control group (P = .001; P < .001; P < .001; P = .008; P < .001, respectively). The total score of ASI-3 scale and the scores of all subdimensions (physical, cognitive, and social) were significantly higher in patients than in controls (P < .001). The BAI (26.8 ± 9.3) and BDI (24.2 ± 8.6) total scores of the patients were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < .001). Conclusions: According to EPQ, patients diagnosed with PP are extroverted, but also cold, distrustful, and aloof; show impulsive behavior; are anxious, depressed, and nervous; overly emotional; and prone to lying. Patients suffer more from anxiety, depressive symp- toms, and AS in physical, cognitive, and social subdimensions than healthy people. Our findings highlight the importance of psychiatric assessment in PP patients. In this context, we believe that PP deserves to be studied in a broad spectrum with its cognitive, behav- ioral, and social aspects.

Monosit Lenfosit Oranı Obsesif Kompulsif Bozuklukta İnflamasyon Belirteci Olarak Kullanılabilir mi?

Yildiz, Sevler; Akkus, Mustafa; Kefeli, Mehmet Celal

Taken from the food through the body is more than the energy consumed. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the possible relationship between\rchildhood traumas, attachment styles and defense mechanisms with the etiology of the disease in individuals diagnosed with obesity.\rMaterial and Method: In this study, which was planned as a case-control study, 50 patients aged between 18-65 and diagnosed with obesity and 50\rhealthy non-obese control groups with similar sociodemographic characteristics in terms of age and sex were included. Sociodemographic Data Form\rand the Inventory of Experiences in Close Relationships, Childhood Trauma Scale and Defense Styles Scale were administered to all participants.\rResults: The total score of the Childhood Trauma Scale was found to be significantly higher in the case group compared to the control group\r(p <0.05).The defense styles scale total score was found to be statistically significantly higher in the case group compared to the control group\r(p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of attachment style (p >0.05).\rConclusion: A relationship was found between childhood traumas and defense styles and obesity. We emphasized that psychiatric factors as well as\rgenetic and biological factors are effective in the etiology of obesity. Further studies are needed to generalize the findings and develop health strategies\rfor this purpose.

Typical and atypical antipsychotics may cause subfertility through oxidative stress in reproductive cells and endocrine axis. This experimental study was designed to determine the effects of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) treatment on oxidative stress markers and hyperprolactinemia in subfertility due to antipsychotics. A total of 54 Albino Wistar female rats were divided into nine groups as the healthy (HG), haloperidol (HPL), olanzapine (OLZ), clozapine (CLZ), aripiprazole (ARZ), ATP+haloperidol (ATP+HPL), ATP+olanzapine(ATP+OLZ), ATP+clozapine (ATP+CLZ) and ATP+aripiprazole (ATP+ARZ) groups. ATP was injected intraperitoneally (ip) at a dose of 25 mg/kg to animals in ATP+HPL, ATP+OLZ, ATP+CLZ, and ATP+ARZ groups. HG, HPL, OLZ, CLZ, and ARZ groups were given the same volume of distilled water via ip. One hour after administration of drugs and solvent, haloperidol (2 mg/kg) for ATP+HPL and HPL groups, olanzapine (2 mg/kg) for ATP+OLZ and OLZ groups, clozapine (20 mg/kg) for ATP+CLZ and CLZ groups and aripiprazole (3 mg/kg) for ATP+ARZ and ARZ groups was given orally to by gavage. This procedure was repeated once a day for 15 days. After this period, blood samples were taken for oxidant, antioxidant and prolactin measurement and the animals were kept with mature male rats for one month for breeding. The degree of oxidative stress, hyperprolactinemia and subfertility caused by antipsychotics were found to be haloperidol, olanzapine, clozapine, aripiprazole, in order of frequency. ATP administration reversed the increase in oxidants markers and the decrease of antioxidants significantly. ATP administration prevents subfertility due to antipsychotic drugs.
