Gazavatnames in Ottoman Historiography and the Eastern Expeditions Gazavatname of Ebubekir b. Abdullah

One of the most important events during the reign of Sultan Murad III was the war between the Ottomans and Safavids which broke out in 1578 and ended with the Treaty of İstanbul signed in 1590. There are many gazavatnames about the Ottoman-Safevid battles that took place in those years. Among the most important ones are “Nusretname” written by Gelibolulu Mustafa Ali and “Şecâ’atnâme” written by Âsafî Dâl Mehmed Çelebi. In addition to these, there are Ebubekir bin Abdullah’s work “Şark Seferleri (Campaigns to the East)” and his “Hatifî Risalesi” which narrate the campaigns started by Özdemiroğlu Osman Paşa in Şirvan and Demirkapı. In this study, after some theoretical background about the history writing in the Ottoman Empire and the genre of gazavatname is given, an evaluation of the life of Ebubekir b. Abdullah, title of his work, the motive underlying this work, its content, its available copies, and the writer’s style is introduced
