- ArticleAçık Erişim2023The Battle of Serman/Seryan (514/1120) a Breaking Point in Mangujakid - Artukid - Seljukid - Danishmendid - Byzantin Relations in Turkey of the Principaties Period
Taşcı, Kemal
Thanks to the Turkoman raids that started in Anatolia before the Battle of Manzikert, the Turkmen population, who first accumulated in eastern Anatolia, began to settle in the regions where they would live their pasture-winter life together with the principalities established after the Battle of Manzikert. While the principalities of Saltukids, Mangujakids and Danishmendids were established in northeastern Anatolia right after the war, principalities such as Sokmanids/Ahlatshahs, Dilmachids, Artuklular, Chubukids, Yinalids and Kizilarslanids were formed in southeastern Anatolia after the interregnum of the Seljuk State. After the threat of the Turkish Seljuk State and the Crusaders, the aforementioned principalities began to struggle with each other. In this article, the Artukids, who annexed cities such as Palu, Kharpert, Chimichkezek and Hanzit, which were under the rule of Chubukids, after 1112 and established kinship with the Melitene Seljuk Sultanate, and the Kamakh-centered cities of Erzinjan, Divrigi and Şarkî Karahisar (Şebinkarahisar, Kögonya) and adjacent cities. The Battle of Serman/Seryan, which was a breaking point in the struggle for dominance of the Mangujakids, who Turkified and Islamized the towns, was examined. The war, which took place as a result of the Byzantine Empire’s Trabzon Duchy and Danishmendids being included in the alliances, was discussed in terms of Turkish history in northeastern Anatolia. The information given by the sources and the information and opinions of contemporary historians about this war were analyzed and a comparison of the source-research work was made. Considerations about the place, date and results of the war were evaluated in detail.
- ArticleAçık Erişim2022An Example of Political Marriages in Turkish History: Atabey Marriages
Altin, Kader; Kömürcü, Elif
Atabeys were civil servants who were responsible primarily for raising the children of the ruler. At first, it was a duty regarding the education of the prince, after some time, it became an institution, and then became politicized. The most obvious aspect of this politicization was the atabeys giving their daughters to the princes or marrying the widowed mothers of the princes. In this way, the atabeys enabled these duties to become an important position in the state administration, in which they also became more effective over time. We see that atabeys played important roles in the fights for sultanate, especially among the Seljukian princes, and as long as the power of the state continued in the central administration, they did not enter into a struggle for independence on their own behalf, but they began to use all the power of princes on their own behalf at the point where the state center weakened.\rEstablishing family ties through political marriages and forming a policy based on them is a path followed by statesmen. In line with this path, sultans, melikes, atabeys made marriages. The main purpose of marriages is to consolidate the authority of the state, to take the allegiance of the principalities, to prevent rebellions and to play an active role in the relations between the dynasties.\rIn the present study, the effects of atabey marriages, which is among the marriages made for political purposes in Turkish history, on Turkish political history were evaluated by giving examples from fifteen atabey marriages made in the historical process.
