A new cave-dwelling Laemostenus (Pristonychus) species from central Anatolia (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Sphodrini)

    Fidan, Ebru ceren; Elverici, Mert

Laemostenus (Pristonychus) violeta Fidan & Elverici, sp. nov., from T & uuml;rkiye is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the terricola species group of the subgenus Pristonychus. It is readily distinguished from congeners by the unique structure of the aedeagus (slender median lobe and distinct apical shape) and the vivid violaceous sheen of the elytra. The species was found in extremely high abundance in the guano-rich dark zone of Singildakli in (Hamambogazi) Cave, Central Anatolia, and was absent from a nearby guano-free cave. Its ecology indicates a guanophilic and troglophilic lifestyle, and it is currently known only from the type locality, suggesting a localized cave endemicity within the group.

Mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Parasitiformes) from the aphotic zone of Hacı Akif Cave (Türkiye), with the description of a new species of Macrocheles

    Özbek, Hasan Huseyin; Elverici, Mert

This study reports mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) collected from fresh bat guano in the aphotic zone of a natural cave in T & uuml;rkiye. Three species were identified, each belonging to a different family: Eulaelaps stabularis (Haemogamasidae), Macrocheles foliatus & Ouml;zbek sp. nov. (Macrochelidae) and Vulgarogamasus oudemansi (Parasitidae). Macrocheles foliatus & Ouml;zbek sp. nov. is described here as a new species based on morphological features observed in adult females. Vulgarogamasus oudemansi is recorded from T & uuml;rkiye for the first time. Two females of Eulaelaps stabularis were found directly in bat guano, and the presence of developing larvae suggests larviparity or ovolarviparity in this species. These findings expand current knowledge of cave-associated mesostigmatid diversity and provide additional information on the ecological role of bat guano habitats in supporting diverse mite assemblages in cave ecosystem.https://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:745CF591-023A-48F3-A4E9-824BB6923106

New data on Leptotrombidium miniopteri (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) with a description of the adult stage

Stekolnikov, Alexandr A.; Karağaç, Rümeysa; Sevsay, Sevgi; Elverici, Mert

The adult stage of a bat-parasitizing chigger mite Leptotrombidium miniopteri Feider, 1966 known from Romania was described for the first time based on specimens collected in Hacı Akif Cave located in the Konya Province of Türkiye. The identification was based on the larval offspring obtained from one female kept alive in a laboratory. At the same time, free larvae identified as L. miniopteri were collected in the same place within the cave. A re-description of L. miniopteri larval stage was prepared based both on specimens collected in nature and on those obtained in laboratory. A comparison with closely related species was carried out based on morphometric and meristic traits. Leptotrombidium avonense Vercammen-Grandjean & Langston, 1976 described from a bat in England is a probable synonym of L. miniopteri. Morphological variation of larvae and adults of L. miniopteri was recorded and discussed.

A subterranean new genus and species of Eutrombidiinae (Trombidiformes: Microtrombidiidae) from Turkey

    Sevsay, Sevgi̇; Elverici, Mert

A new genus and species of the Microtrombidiidae, Troglotrombidium dolichopodum n. gen. et n. sp. is described based on ectoparasitic larvae collected from two Dolichopoda lycia (Galvagni 2006) (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) specimens from a cave in Western Taurus Mountains, Turkey. The new genus can be distinguished from other genera by the absence of eyes, highly modified claws of tarsi III, sensillary setae structure of the anterior dorsal scutum, and the number of adoral setae. The new species is a typical troglobite, and this interspecific interaction is a well-documented case for the little-known host-parasite relationships from subterranean ecosystems.

An assessment of the herpetofauna of the Oriental Sweetgum forests in southwestern Anatolia, Turkey; [Uma avaliação da herpetofauna das florestas orientals de "Sweetgum" no sudoeste da Anatólia, Turquia]

Bozkurt, Emin; Ürker, Okan; Elverici, Mert

Oriental Sweetgum (Liquidambar orientalis) is a threatened tree species restricted to Rhodes Island (Greece) and southern Anatolia (Turkey), best known for its rare riparian forests. These small patches of forests are severely fragmented and scattered, and are rarely found in southwestern Turkey Based on field sampling and data compilation, we performed an assessment of the herpetofauna in these forests in southwestern Turkey during the spring of 2019 and 2021. Sampling was carried out using a line-transect method in 13 forests with various habitats, resulting in data at the community and population levels. Sixteen families, including 26 amphibian and reptile species (four anurans. four turtles, nine lizards, and nine snakes), were recorded from these unique forests, based on 1440 individuals. Twenty-two species were recorded for the first time from these forests: in addition. Emys orbicularis and Elaphe sauromates were recorded for the first time from the region. Richness in the forest patches, habitat use by the recorded species, and interspecific interactions are discussed to explain the conspicuous patterns observed in the species distributions. The unique distribution pattern of Phoenicolacerta laevis among the existing forest patches represents the most prominent finding, with implications for a recent introduction. The fossorial species Xerotyphlops vermicularis, Blanus strauchi, and Eryx jaculus are unlikely to occur in the Oriental Sweetgum forest due to annual flooding. The data obtained during this study will be transferred to the Oriental Sweetgum forest conservation action plan (2019-2024) as part of the biodiversity monitoring tools for use in the long-term conservation of these forests.

A survey of hard ticks associated with cave dwelling mammals in Turkey

Hekimoglu, Olcay; Elverici, Mert; Yorulmaz, Tarkan

Members of the subgenus Eschatocephalus Frauenfeld, 1853 are highly specialized cave-dwelling ectoparasites of bats. We conducted a comprehensive field-based survey on bat ticks in Turkey and provided information about the phylogenetic placement of collected species. Sampling was carried out at 26 caves from 18 provinces around Turkey between 2019 and 2021. Eighty-one tick specimens collected from the cave environment or on various cave roosting bats resulted in five species: Ixodes vespertilionis, Ixodes simplex, Ixodes ariadnae, Ixodes kaiseri, and Haemaphysalis erinacei. While I. simplex was the most frequently collected species with a rate of 56.2% mainly from bats (Miniopterus schreibersii), I. vespertilionis was the most prevalent species (65.4%) and found mainly on cave walls. The first record of I. ariadnae was provided for Turkey. Phylogenetic trees were built using mt 16S rDNA and COI markers. Our results demonstrated the presence of two distinct lineages of I. vespertilionis in Turkey; one lineage grouped with European isolates, whereas three sequences clustered separately. The phylogenetic pattern of I. simplex was consistent with previous results; this clade was clustered distantly to other bat tick species. The significance of the surprising records of H. erinacei and I. kaiseri in caves is also discussed.

The global spread of misinformation on spiders

Mammola, Stefano; Malumbres-Olarte, Jagoba; Arabesky, Valeria; Barrales-Alcalá, Diego Alejandro; Barrion-Dupo, Aimee Lynn; Benamú, Marco Antonio; Bird, Tharina L.; Bogomolova, Maria; Cardoso, Pedro; Chatzaki, Maria

In the internet era, the digital architecture that keeps us connected and informed may also amplify the spread of misinformation. This problem is gaining global attention, as evidence accumulates that misinformation may interfere with democratic processes and undermine collective responses to environmental and health crises1,2. In an increasingly polluted information ecosystem, understanding the factors underlying the generation and spread of misinformation is becoming a pressing scientific and societal challenge3. Here, we studied the global spread of (mis-)information on spiders using a high-resolution global database of online newspaper articles on spider–human interactions, covering stories of spider–human encounters and biting events published from 2010–20204. We found that 47% of articles contained errors and 43% were sensationalist. Moreover, we show that the flow of spider-related news occurs within a highly interconnected global network and provide evidence that sensationalism is a key factor underlying the spread of misinformation.

An expert-curated global database of online newspaper articles on spiders and spider bites

Mass media plays an important role in the construction and circulation of risk perception associated with animals. Widely feared groups such as spiders frequently end up in the spotlight of traditional and social media. We compiled an expert-curated global database on the online newspaper coverage of human-spider encounters over the past ten years (2010–2020). This database includes information about the location of each human-spider encounter reported in the news article and a quantitative characterisation of the content—location, presence of photographs of spiders and bites, number and type of errors, consultation of experts, and a subjective assessment of sensationalism. In total, we collected 5348 unique news articles from 81 countries in 40 languages. The database refers to 211 identified and unidentified spider species and 2644 unique human-spider encounters (1121 bites and 147 as deadly bites). To facilitate data reuse, we explain the main caveats that need to be made when analysing this database and discuss research ideas and questions that can be explored with it.

Continental data on cave-dwelling spider communities across Europe (Arachnida: Araneae)

Mammola, Stefano; Cardoso, Pedro; Angyal, Dorottya; Balázs, Gergely; Blick, Theo; Brustel, Hervé; Carter, Julian; Ćurčić, Srećko; Danflous, Samuel; Dányi, László

Background Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) are widespread in subterranean ecosystems worldwide and represent an important component of subterranean trophic webs. Yet, global-scale diversity patterns of subterranean spiders are still mostly unknown. In the frame of the CAWEB project, a European joint network of cave arachnologists, we collected data on cavedwelling spider communities across Europe in order to explore their continental diversity patterns. Two main datasets were compiled: one listing all subterranean spider species recorded in numerous subterranean localities across Europe and another with high resolution data about the subterranean habitat in which they were collected. From these two datasets, we further generated a third dataset with individual geo-referenced occurrence records for all these species. New information Data from 475 geo-referenced subterranean localities (caves, mines and other artificial subterranean sites, interstitial habitats) are herein made available. For each subterranean locality, information about the composition of the spider community is provided, along with local geomorphological and habitat features. Altogether, these communities account for > 300 unique taxonomic entities and 2,091 unique geo-referenced occurrence records, that are made available via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) (Mammola and Cardoso 2019). This dataset is unique in that it covers both a large geographic extent (from 35° south to 67° north) and contains high-resolution local data on geomorphological and habitat features. Given that this kind of high-resolution data are rarely associated with broad-scale datasets used in macroecology, this dataset has high potential for helping researchers in tackling a range of biogeographical and macroecological questions, not necessarily uniquely related to arachnology or subterranean biology.

Kut gen. nov., a new troglomorphic spider genus from Turkey (Araneae, Dysderidae)

Kunt, Kadir Boğaç; Elverici, Mert; Yağmur, Ersen Aydin; Özkütük, Recep Sulhi

A new genus of troglomorphic Dysderidae is described, based mainly on the morphology of copulatory organs. The new genus Kut gen. nov., with the type species Harpactocrates troglophilus Brignoli, 1978, also includes two recently discovered new species from the coastal Mediterranean Turkey: Kut izmiricus sp. nov. and K. dimensis sp. nov. All three species display troglomorphic traits, most distinct in K. dimensis sp. nov. Another genus-level trait is a characteristic simple type of bulb in males. Female copulatory organ shows similarity to the endemic Caucasian genus Cryptoparachtes Dunin, 1992 in paraspermatheca structure, whereas the male copulatory organ is unique among all known Dysderidae.

Local-versus broad-scale environmental drivers of continental β-diversity patterns in subterranean spider communities across Europe

Mammola, Stefano; Cardoso, Pedro; Angyal, Dorottya; Balázs, Gergely; Blick, Theo; Brustel, Herve; Carter, Julian; Ćurčić, Srećko; Danflous, Samuel; Dányi, László

Macroecologists seek to identify drivers of community turnover (β-diversity) through broad spatial scales. However, the influence of local habitat features in driving broad-scale β-diversity patterns remains largely untested, owing to the objective challenges of associating local-scale variables to continental-framed datasets. We examined the relative contribution of local- versus broad-scale drivers of continental β-diversity patterns, using a uniquely suited dataset of cave-dwelling spider communities across Europe (35-70° latitude). Generalized dissimilarity modelling showed that geographical distance, mean annual temperature and size of the karst area in which caves occurred drove most of β-diversity, with differential contributions of each factor according to the level of subterranean specialization. Highly specialized communities were mostly influenced by geographical distance, while less specialized communities were mostly driven by mean annual temperature. Conversely, local-scale habitat features turned out to be meaningless predictors of community change, which emphasizes the idea of caves as the human accessible fraction of the extended network of fissures that more properly represents the elective habitat of the subterranean fauna. To the extent that the effect of local features turned to be inconspicuous, caves emerge as experimental model systems in which to study broad biological patterns without the confounding effect of local habitat features.
