Preschool Teachers' Artificial Intelligence Awareness: An Experimental Study

Özenoğlu, Yunus Emre; Aydoğdu, Fatih; Gürsoy, Figen

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in early childhood education has been increasingly used to support preschool children's development. However, research indicates that preschool teachers often have limited awareness and literacy regarding AI, and studies focusing on improving their AI-related knowledge remain insufficient. Therefore, enhancing preschool teachers' understanding of AI and supporting its effective integration into educational practices is critically important. This study aimed to examine the impact of an artificial intelligence education programme on preschool teachers' AI awareness. The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design and included a total of 48 preschool teachers, with 24 assigned to the experimental group and 24 to the control group. Teachers in the experimental group participated in artificial intelligence education applications, while no such interventions were implemented in the control group. Data were collected using measurement tools administered before and after the intervention. The findings revealed a statistically significant increase in artificial intelligence literacy among teachers in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. These results suggest that artificial intelligence–based educational interventions are effective in improving preschool teachers' awareness and understanding of AI, and they highlight the importance of incorporating AI education into professional development programmes for early childhood educators.

Aysu, Burçin; Aral, Neriman; Aydoğdu, Fatih; Gürsoy, Figen

Introduction: In this study, it was aimed to develop a scale to determine children’s attitudes towards water. Methods: The study included 865 children studying in the fourth to eighth grades. The items of the scale were formed based on the theoretical structure, a comprehensive review of existing scales related to attitudes towards water and expert evaluations. Content validity, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analyses were performed from psychometric analyses to determine the validity and reliability features. Results: As a result of the study, a scale consisting of three factors (water cycle, importance of water, water saving) and 24 items with acceptable validity and reliability values was obtained. Discussion: The scale has reliable psychometric properties and can be used as an important assessment tool in evaluating children’s attitudes towards water.

Social Emotional Well-Being, Psychological Resilience and Behavioural Problems in Preschool Children: The Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation

Aydoğdu, Fatih; Gürsoy, Figen; Aral, Neriman

Problems related to social, emotional and psychological well-being in children at an early age may cause behavioural problems. Previous studies show that the development of emotion regulation strengthens social-emotional well-being, and psychological resilience and reduces behavioural problems in children. This study aims to test the possible mediating role of emotion regulation and to gain a better perspective on the association between social and emotional well-being, resilience, and behavioural problems. 250 children aged 4-6 years (122 boys, 48.8%; 128 girls, 51.2%; mean age = 4.93) studying in kindergartens in Turkey were included in the study. Data on children's behavioural problems and emotion regulation skills were obtained from mothers, and data on social-emotional wellbeing, and psychological resilience levels were obtained from teachers. Social and emotional wellbeing, and psychological resilience indirectly significantly predicted behavioural problems through emotion regulation. Emotion regulation has a partial mediator role in the relationship between social and emotional well-being, psychological resilience and behavioural problems. In line with the results, the importance of supporting the development of emotion regulation skills in the preschool period was emphasized.

The study group of the study included 110 children in the five–six age group attending pre-primary education institutions in Erzincan city center and their mothers. As part of this research, the DeMoulin Self-Concept Scale for Children was used to evaluate the children's self-perceptions, and the Family Form of the Selcuk Sexual Development Scale-Sexual Identity and Gender-Related Behavior Subscale for mothers was used to evaluate the children's sexual development. As a result of the research, we found that, in fact, there is a relationship between sexual identity and self-efficacy and self-esteem, which are the sub-dimensions of self-perception. We found that self-efficacy is a significant predictor of sexual identity; however, we could not establish unequivocally that there was a significant relationship between gender-related behavior and self-efficacy and self-esteem.
