A new cave-dwelling Laemostenus (Pristonychus) species from central Anatolia (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Sphodrini)

    Fidan, Ebru ceren; Elverici, Mert

Laemostenus (Pristonychus) violeta Fidan & Elverici, sp. nov., from T & uuml;rkiye is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the terricola species group of the subgenus Pristonychus. It is readily distinguished from congeners by the unique structure of the aedeagus (slender median lobe and distinct apical shape) and the vivid violaceous sheen of the elytra. The species was found in extremely high abundance in the guano-rich dark zone of Singildakli in (Hamambogazi) Cave, Central Anatolia, and was absent from a nearby guano-free cave. Its ecology indicates a guanophilic and troglophilic lifestyle, and it is currently known only from the type locality, suggesting a localized cave endemicity within the group.

Mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Parasitiformes) from the aphotic zone of Hacı Akif Cave (Türkiye), with the description of a new species of Macrocheles

    Özbek, Hasan Huseyin; Elverici, Mert

This study reports mesostigmatid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) collected from fresh bat guano in the aphotic zone of a natural cave in T & uuml;rkiye. Three species were identified, each belonging to a different family: Eulaelaps stabularis (Haemogamasidae), Macrocheles foliatus & Ouml;zbek sp. nov. (Macrochelidae) and Vulgarogamasus oudemansi (Parasitidae). Macrocheles foliatus & Ouml;zbek sp. nov. is described here as a new species based on morphological features observed in adult females. Vulgarogamasus oudemansi is recorded from T & uuml;rkiye for the first time. Two females of Eulaelaps stabularis were found directly in bat guano, and the presence of developing larvae suggests larviparity or ovolarviparity in this species. These findings expand current knowledge of cave-associated mesostigmatid diversity and provide additional information on the ecological role of bat guano habitats in supporting diverse mite assemblages in cave ecosystem.https://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:745CF591-023A-48F3-A4E9-824BB6923106

Species of the genus Stigmaeus (Acariformes: Stigmaeidae) from the Karasu Valley (Türkiye): morphological examination and a taxonomic argument

    Doğan, Salih

In the present work, morphological characteristics of species of the genus Stigmaeus Koch collected from the Karasu Valley in the Munzur Mountains (Türkiye) were examined. A total of 11 species of the Stigmaeus were identified in this study. Among them, S. dokeri, S. maraghehiensis and S. purpurascens are recorded for the first time from Türkiye. The protonymph and deutonymph stages of S. bifurcus, as well as the larva, protonymph and deutonymph stages of S. dokeri, are described for the first time. Furthermore, morphological variations were observed for the first time in S. dokeri and S. pulumurensis. The names Stigmaeus africanus Soliman & Gomaa, 1986, S. banksi Gomaa & Hassan, 1986, S. triramus Soliman & Gomaa, 1986 and S. zaheri Gomaa & Hassan, 1986 are considered nomina nuda. This study also highlights the importance of maintaining the current concept of the genus Stigmaeus for taxonomic stability. While the available molecular data suggest that some species may form distinct clades, single-locus analyses based on limited data sets are not yet considered sufficient to justify clear divisions at the genus level. Therefore, it has been suggested that a more balanced approach would be to cautiously consider the idea of dividing Stigmaeus into separate genera and to restructure it based on subgenera or natural species groups, in accordance with the concept of Berlese (1910), and the aim is to open this systematic framework for discussion. In this context, the proposal to reinterpret certain taxa such as Ledermuelleriopsis Willmann and Villersia Kuznetsov not as independent genera but as subgenera within Eustigmaeus Berlese has also been opened for discussion within the scope of this unifying approach. In conclusion, this study contributes to the diversity of Stigmaeus in Türkiye with new records, documents different developmental stages and morphological variation, clarifies the nomenclatural status of some species-names, and advocates a taxonomic framework that prioritises subgeneric re-structuring over generic-level splitting within Stigmaeidae systematics.

The potential of Barbarea species in the management of obesity, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes

Badem, Merve; Kanbolat, Şeyda; Kandemir, Ali; Öztürk, Ayşe Aleyna; Topcu, Hayrünnisa

Barbarea species belonging to the Brassicaceae family contain glucosinolates, flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponosides, fatty acids, and other bioactive compounds. These compounds are reported to exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, antiproliferative, and herbicidal effects, as well as beneficial effects on metabolic diseases. In particular, organosulfur and polyphenolic compounds have been reported to exhibit inhibitory effects on enzymes such as cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, nitric oxide synthase, pancreatic lipase, lipoprotein lipase, and glucosidase. In this study, the inhibitory activities of methanol extracts, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and remaining aqueous subfractions obtained from the aerial parts of B. auriculata var. paludosa Coode& Cullen and B. plantaginea DC on pancreatic lipase, cholesterol esterase, and α-glucosidase enzymes were investigated for the first time. When the results obtained in the study are evaluated, the ethyl acetate subfraction of B. plantaginea exhibited the strongest pancreatic lipase and cholesterol esterase inhibitory activities, with IC₅₀ values of 111.687 ± 1.291 µg/mL and 10.718 ± 0.308 µg/mL, respectively. For α-glucosidase inhibition, the methanol extract of B. auriculata subsp. paludosa demonstrated the highest activity with an IC₅₀ value of 135.207 ± 0.136 µg/mL. it is seen that the ethyl acetate subfraction of both species has stronger cholesterol esterase inhibitory effects, moderate lipase and glucosidase inhibitory effects.

Climatic Variables as Drivers of Pterocarpus erinaceus (Fabaceae): Distribution and the Implications of Climate Change

Sari, İdris; Ismael, Bio; Ullah, Fazal; Agoundé, Gafarou; Yildiz, Faruk

Pterocarpus erinaceus is an ecologically and economically important tree species native to the Sahel region of West Africa, facing severe threats due to overexploitation, habitat degradation, and climate change. This study assesses the impact of key climatic variables on the species' current distribution and projects potential range shifts across Africa under mid-21st century climate scenarios. Using an ensemble modeling approach that combines various algorithms and utilizes 37 comprehensive climatic variables, the analysis revealed significant patterns of highly suitable habitat, concentrated primarily in West Africa. Projections under low and medium emission scenarios for 2040–2060 and 2080–2100 periods predict a reduction in climatically unsuitable areas and a potential expansion of suitable habitats, suggesting that the species may be somewhat resilient to medium-term climate changes. The primary climatic factors limiting the species' distribution were identified as the Mean Temperature of the Driest Quarter and the Climatic Moisture Index. These results underscore the species' ecophysiological dependence on specific temperature and moisture regimes. Crucially, while our projections suggest the species exhibits resilience and potential habitat expansion under medium-term climate change, its realization is contingent upon mitigating persistent anthropogenic pressures. Therefore, to ensure the species' long-term persistence and maintain the ecological integrity of the West African Savanna Biome, conservation strategies must prioritize aggressive, in situ actions focused on sustainable management, controlled harvesting, and the protection of current and future suitable habitats, rather than focusing solely on long-term climate change adaptation measures.

Potential Hepatoprotective Effects of Adenosine Triphosphate Against Olaparib-Induced Oxidative Liver Injury: An Experimental Rat Model

Baykan, Ahmed Ramiz; Cerrah, Serkan; Kartal Baykan, Emine; Tanas, Serdar; Yavuzer, Bulent; Yazici, Gulce Naz; Kuzucu, Mehmet; Altuner, Durdu; Suleyman, Halis

Background: Olaparib, a clinically established poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor widely used in oncology, has significantly improved outcomes in several malignancies. However, increasing evidence indicates that olaparib may induce hepatocellular injury through mechanisms involving oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a key regulator of cellular bioenergetics and redox homeostasis, may confer protection against oxidative tissue injury. This study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of ATP against olaparib-induced oxidative liver damage in rats and compared its efficacy with melatonin. Methods: Twenty-four male albino Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups (n = 6): healthy control (HG), olaparib-treated (OLP), ATP plus olaparib (ATOL), and melatonin plus olaparib (MLOL). Olaparib was administered at a dose of 100 mg/kg orally twice daily, whereas ATP (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) and melatonin (10 mg/kg, orally) were administered once daily. The treatments were administered for 14 consecutive days. Hepatic oxidative and inflammatory status was assessed by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and ATP levels in liver tissue. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were measured as biochemical indicators of hepatocellular injury. Liver tissues were also examined histopathologically. Results: Olaparib administration significantly increased hepatic MDA and IL-6 levels together with serum ALT and AST activities, while significantly reducing hepatic tGSH and ATP levels and SOD and CAT activities compared with the healthy group (p < 0.001). Both ATP and melatonin significantly attenuated these alterations (p < 0.001). Notably, ATP demonstrated a more pronounced protective effect than melatonin, particularly in suppressing aminotransferase elevations and improving histopathological liver architecture. Conclusion: ATP significantly alleviates olaparib-induced hepatotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress, suppressing inflammatory responses, restoring antioxidant defense mechanisms and significantly replenishing depleted hepatic ATP levels. These findings suggest that ATP may represent a promising therapeutic strategy for preventing PARP inhibitor-associated drug-induced liver injury.

Gözcü, Sefa; Akşit, Zeynep; Akşit, Hüseyin; Şimşek, Samed; Korkmaz, Mustafa

This study explores the essential oils (EOs) of Rosa hemisphaerica (RH), Rosa villosa subsp. mollis (RV) and the newly identified hybrid Rosa ozcelikii (RO). The major components of the EOs were found to be nonadecane (22.45%), viridiflorol (19.37%) and heneicosane (11.72%) in RH; α-muurolene (14.72%), σ-cadinene (17.88%) and farnesol (9.94%) in RV; and heptacosane (27.63%), heneicosane (12.42%) and α-citronellol (11.90%) in RO. Antibacterial activities were evaluated using the disc diffusion method. The EOs demonstrated moderate antibacterial effects: RV and RH exhibited inhibition zones of 8.0 ± 0.4 mm against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while RO showed stronger activity with inhibition zones of 11.0 ± 0.5 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, 12.0 ± 0.4 mm against Clostridium perfringens and 9.0 ± 0.5 mm against Bacillus cereus. These findings highlight the chemical diversity and potential therapeutic applications of these Rosa species, emphasising their relevance in the search for natural antimicrobial agents.

First Population Assessment Report, Suitable Habitat and Ecological Corridors of the Endangered Kashmir Gray Langur Morphotype (Semnopithecus ajax, Pocock 1928) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Ali, Abid; Rössel-Ramírez, David Walter; Jan, Arif; Sari, Idris; Martín-Taboada, Adrián; Juan-Rueda, Jorge; Djukanovich-Iturbe, Milenka; Zaman, Iftikhar U-; López-Bao, José Vicente; Khan, Muhammad Noman

The Himalayan Kashmir langur (Semnopithecus ajax) is an endangered colobine of the northwestern Himalayas, occurring in India and Pakistan; yet its ecology remains poorly studied. In Pakistan, it is known from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and the northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) but populations restricted to KPK has been neglected until the data. In this regard, we conducted 60 line-transect surveys (118.2 km) across 69.5 km² in three KPK districts—Mansehra, Kohistan, and Battagram—to estimate population density and abundance. Further, we modeled habitat suitability and connectivity modeling of langurs across its known range in Pakistan. The current study revealed mean density across the surveyed districts was 4.5 individuals/km² (95% CI: 2.3–6.7), with substantially higher densities in Mansehra (7.4; 95% CI: 3.3–11.5) compared to Kohistan–Battagram (KB) (1.3; 95% CI: 0.1–2.5). The total population in the study area was estimated at 314 individuals (95% CI: 143–485), with ~86% concentrated in Mansehra. Habitat suitability modeling (AUC = 0.96) identified four major suitable niche zones (SNZ) (~2,953 km²) across Pakistan, primarily montane forests between 1,300–3,100 m with > 40% canopy cover, though only ~82 km² (~1%) overlapped with existing protected areas. Connectivity analysis indicated forested corridors linking these niche zones, while fragmentation reduced connectivity in several regions. Our findings demonstrate that the langur persists in Pakistan as a small, fragmented, and forest-dependent population. Conservation of this threatened species will require improved forest protection, management of habitat corridors, and coordinated transboundary conservation efforts across its Himalayan range.

Liv-52 Attenuates Erlotinib-Induced Liver Injury via Modulation of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Apoptosis in Rats

Bulut, Seval; Altuner, Durdu; Suleyman, Bahadir; Mammadov, Renad; Ozkaraca, Mustafa; Gungor, Ali; Kuzucu, Mehmet; Hendem, Engin; Suleyman, Halis

Erlotinib, an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI), is widely used in cancer therapy; however, hepatotoxicity limits its clinical use. This study investigated the protective effects of Liv-52, a polyherbal hepatoprotective formulation, against erlotinib-induced hepatotoxicity in rats and compared its efficacy with melatonin. The animals (n = 24, Wistar albino rats) were randomly categorized into four groups: healthy (HG), erlotinib (ERG), Liv-52 + erlotinib (LEG), and melatonin + erlotinib (MEG). Liv-52 (50 mg/kg/day, orally) and melatonin (10 mg/kg/day, orally) were administered once daily for two weeks. Erlotinib (10 mg/kg, orally) was given every other day to ERG, LEG, and MEG groups for two weeks. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured. Hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) levels were analyzed. Additionally, double immunofluorescence staining was performed to evaluate apoptotic (poly[ADP-ribose] polymerase-1 [PARP-1], apoptosis-inducing factor [AIF]), inflammatory (cyclooxygenase-2 [COX-2]), and anti-inflammatory (interleukin-10 [IL-10]) biomarkers in liver tissues. Histopathological examination was also conducted to assess structural alterations. Erlotinib significantly increased MDA, ALT, AST, and LDH while decreasing tGSH, SOD, and CAT (p < 0.001). Strong immunoreactivity for PARP-1, AIF, IL-10, and COX-2, as well as severe hydropic degeneration and necrosis, was observed in ERG (p < 0.05). Both Liv-52 and melatonin significantly ameliorated biochemical, histopathological, apoptotic, and inflammatory alterations (p < 0.05). Notably, Liv-52 demonstrated superior hepatoprotective efficacy compared to melatonin. These findings indicate that Liv-52 effectively attenuates erlotinib-induced hepatotoxicity by modulating oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and apoptotic pathways, thereby preserving liver function and structural integrity.
