Game-based and individualized movement training improves physiological and motor outcomes in young adults with autism spectrum disorder: an experimental study from Türkiye

Aydın, Ahmet Serhat; Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Halmatov, Medera; Gürkan, Alper Cenk; Akcan, İbrahim Orkun; Yılmaz, Coşkun

Background: This study aims to examine the effects of game-based and individualized movement training (GBIMT) program on physiological (body weight, body fat percentage, BMI) and motor outcomes (balance, reaction time, motor speed) in young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: An experimental design with pre-test–post-test control groups was used in the study. A total of 20 participants (10 in the experimental group, 10 in the control group) with a mean age of 22.2 ± 4.8 years were monitored for eight weeks. The experimental group participated in GBIMT sessions for 60 min per day, two days per week, while the control group continued their usual educational routines. Body composition (InBody 270 Body Composition Analyzer, model Plus 270, South Korea), balance (TechnoGym, Cesena, Italy), reaction time (BlazePod Ltd., Israel), and motor speed (Computerized Tapping Test, Neurosoft Inc., USA) parameters were used as measurements. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA results indicated a significant reduction in body weight in terms of the experimental group (p = 0.014, η² = 0.289). Large effect sizes were observed for body fat percentage and BMI; however, the group × time interactions were not found to be statistically significant. A significant improvement was observed in the motor speed parameter within the experimental group (p = 0.032, η² = 0.231). Reaction time decreased by 9.8%, although the group × time interaction stayed within the significance limit (p = 0.063). A trend toward improvement was observed in balance parameters; however, no statistically significant difference was found. Conclusion: The findings indicate that GBIMT produced significant improvements in body composition and motor speed after implementing for eight weeks, and also showed a strong tendency to affect reaction time. As a controlled experimental study conducted in Türkiye, this research offers a unique contribution to the literature by demonstrating the effects of game-based and individualized movement programs on both physiological and motor outcomes in individuals with ASD. An investigation of physical traits and strength parameters affecting balance performance

    Ölmez, Cengiz; Akcan, Ibrahim Orkun

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical traits and lower-upper limb strength parameters affecting balance performance. The study was conducted with the voluntary participation of 25 elite combat athletes. The height, body composition, balance and strength performance of the athletes was measured. SPSS 25.0 was used for statistical analysis of the data. Relationships between physical traits, balance skills, and strength levels of the athletes were identified. As a result of the study, it was found that body weight, BMI, fat percentage and fat mass had a significant relationship with balance (p < 0.05). Balance requires perfect harmony between physical and physiological body systems. However, when it comes to balance development or ensuring optimal balance performance, it can be said that the parameters that make up the body composition are more effective factors compared to strength development.

Effect of the aerobic power test performed at low-medium altitude on the myostatin, pgc-1 alpha and klotho levels

Tetik Dündar, Sibel; Kuzucu, Mehmet; Varol, S. Rana

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the aerobic power test on myostatin, PGC-1, and Klotho levels in athletes who had acclimatized to the altitude. MethodS: a total of twenty athletes consisting of nine women and eleven men with an age average of 19.80±2.587 who were engaged in cross-country skiing at elite level participated in the study. the study was carried out at a ski center (altitude: 2000 m). the participants were measured for age, height, body mass (by standard methods), aerobic power test, blood lactate level after rest and aerobic power test. Blood was obtained from the (basal) antecubital vein in the fasting condition before to the aerobic power test. two hours and 48 hours after the test, blood taking was repeated. Klotho, myostatin and PGC-1α levels were examined in the serum samples by the ELISA device and MicroELISA method. RESULTS: As a result, the aerobic power test which lasted 15 minutes significantly increased the PGC-1α (31.2%) and Klotho (332.8%) levels (P<0.016). The serum, on the other hand, had no effect on the level of myostatin (7.2%) cheval (P>0.016). CONCLUSIONS: Acute exercise (single repetition) was found to be effective even on elite athletes who had adapted to the altitude. Myostatin level did not change with the aerobic power test performed at low-mid altitude, but PGC-1α and Klotho levels increased.

Effects of time-restricted nutrition on urinary density, body composition and athletic performance: model Ramadan fast

    Dündar, Sibel Tetik

BACKGROUND: Fasting is a restriction of foodstuff covering a certain period of time during the day. It is one of the religious services which people render due to their faith. Fasting is one of the intermittent starvation diets and, likewise, there are such diets that are designed in different styles and forms. This study has been carried out in order to study the effects of the Ramadan fast which is one of the time restricted nutritional models on the urinary density, body composition athletic performance. METHODS: Twenty-seven students whose age average is 20,57±1,59, who study at the Faculty of Sports Sciences and who play sports recreationally participated in the study. All participants recorded all the food which they took during the hours between the breaking and starting times of fasting when having food is allowed during the month of Ramadan. At the same time, the amount of water consumed, exercising and sleeping times, number of cigarettes smoked were recorded as well. In determining the somatotypes, a skinfold caliper, a tape and a digital compass were used in order to measure skin fold thickness, perimeter and diameter respectively. Body mass, fat, muscle, bone and water rates were measured by means of a digital body analysis scale. Urine chemistry was measured by the reflectance photometry method. A WAnT and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test were performed in order to determine the anaerobic power level and the aerobic power level respectively. Shapiro-Wilk analysis, descriptive statistics and frequency analysis and T test were employed in the distribution of data, in the averages and preliminary test and final test comparison respectively. RESULTS: Consequently, fasting may be a benefit for either the reduction or stopping of cigarette smoking. At the same time, effective results may be obtained in losing weight despite the biological rhythm. If the exercise level is increased in a controlled manner and well organized, it may lead to an increase in muscular mass. CONCLUSIONS: As a result of this study, it was determined that the anaerobic power of fasting people increased and their aerobic power decreased.

Examining of some physical and physiological parameters of 10-18 years old male skiers to seasonal cycles

Budak, Cemalettin; Dündar, Sibel Tetik; Mertoğlu, Cuma

Skiing can be identified as a branch with the most important representative power of winter sports. Further, it has been characterized by high popularity and population, branching off in itself. During the year, different physical performance and physiological indicators are sometimes encountered in athletes depending on seasonal cycles, training levels, and living conditions. The aim of this study is to examine some physical performance parameters and the determined hormone levels to seasonal cycles. Methods: 15 male skiers with a mean age of 14.53±2.61 (years), a mean height of 158.53±9.66 (cm), and a mean body mass of 54.20±10.85 (kg) participated in the study. The information about participants' age, height, and body mass was determined by standard methods. Various measurement tools were used including a digital hand dynamometer (TKK 5401) for hand grip strength, a digital dynamometer (TKK 5402) for back and leg strength, a jump meter (Takei TKK 5406) for vertical jump height, and an electronic hand spirometer (firstMED) for respiratory functions. The Wingate anaerobic power test (Monark 894 E bicycle ergometer) was performed to determine the anaerobic power level. Additionally, to determine somatotypes (ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph) and body fat percentage; skinfold caliper (Holtain), tape measure, and digital caliper (Holtain) were respectively utilized for skinfold thickness measurement, circumference measurements, and diameter measurements. Blood samples (hemogram test, vitamin D, cortisol, and testosterone to be checked) were taken from the antecubital vein in the sitting position. From the blood samples, serum plasma was separated and preserved by centrifugation (+4o) and all samples were analyzed at once. All tests were performed once in September, December, March, and June at an altitude of 2,000 and in pre-season and mid-season. The data were analyzed through IBM SPSS 24.0 package program. Shapiro-Wilk was used to determine the distribution of the data, descriptive and frequency analysis was used to determine the mean of the variables, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the differences between measurements. The results were presented as arithmetic mean and standard deviation (X±Ss). Results: In 10-18 years old male skiers, it was determined that vitamin D reached its highest level in autumn, testosterone in summer, and cortisol in winter. In the inter-test comparison results, significant differences were determined in the vertical jump, right and left-hand grip strength, leg strength, testosterone, vitamin D, HCT, FVC, FEV1, and anaerobic power parameters. Conclusions: The results of the study have mostly supported the literature.
