Auditory processing and speech processing disorders negatively affect school-aged children. To minimize these negative effects, individuals in the risk group should benefit from the positive contribution of early intervention with a comprehensive evaluation. The aim of this study was to develop the Auditory and Speech Performance Test for Children and analyze its validity and reliability. In the development of the Auditory and Speech Performance Test for Children, discrimination and recognition subtasks were built for both auditory and speech performance. Meaningful and meaningless minimal pairs were used in the subtasks. A silent background was used for auditory performance, and noise stimuli were combined into minimal pairs for speech performance. Audiovisual materials were integrated into the finger-tapping test. The Auditory and Speech Performance Test for Children was administered to 307 children with typical development and to 80 children with specific learning disabilities. The Auditory and Speech Performance Test for Children calculated children’s reaction times for pressing speed and accuracy of pressing the correct key. The data were analyzed for content, construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. The content validity index value was found to be high (.89–1.0). The Auditory and Speech Performance Test for Children was explained as a two-factor model using exploratory factor analysis (eigenvalue = 1.92, total variance = 66.65%). It was found to be discriminative according to age, groups, subtests, and 27% bottom and top scores (all were significant at p <.001). Internal consistency (.77–.90) and test-retest values (.89–.93) of the Auditory and Speech Performance Test for Children in the total test scores were calculated within reliable values. In conclusion, we developed a valid and reliable screening tool for auditory and speech performance in children.

Background & objective: Perioperative anxiety affects 25-80% of all surgical patients. It has a negative impact on postoperative recovery, potentially increasing morbidity and mortality. The anxiolytic effects of music therapy are well recognized, but its cognitive implications are unknown. We examined the effects of 440 Hz and 432 Hz music therapy on pre-operative anxiety and cognitive functions in patients scheduled for surgery. Methodology: The study took place in the operating room of our hospital. Following ethical committee approval, the study was launched. It was a prospective observational study comprising 66 ASA I, II, and III patients, between the ages of 18 and 65, scheduled to undergo surgery. They were divided into three groups: Control Group (CG), music therapy at 440 Hz (MG440), and music therapy at 432 Hz (MG432). Music therapy was administered to MG440 and MG432, but not to CG. Patients took the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS). MoCA and BAS were assessed before surgery, one hour and at 24 hours following surgery. Results: In both groups, preoperative music therapy significantly reduced anxiety (P < 0.001). Anxiety levels following surgery were comparable in all groups. Postoperative one-hour cognitive performance in music therapy groups was lower than in controls (P < 0.001), but increased and became significantly higher than in the control group at 24 h (P < 0.001). There was no substantial difference between the 440 Hz and 432 Hz groups. Conclusions: Preoperative music therapy reduced anxiety; it initially lowered postoperative cognitive performance; nevertheless, within 24 hours, therapy groups had enhanced cognitive skills when compared to controls. Ethical committee approval: (Protocol No. 2023-01/2, Date: May 1, 2023). Abbreviations: BAS - Beck Anxiety Scale; MoCA - Montreal Cognitive Assessment

Background & Objective: Cognitive impairment is common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The Framingham Risk Score (FRS) is an algorithm used to estimate the 10-year risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVDr). This study aimed to evaluate the possible associations between FRS and cognitive impairment in people with MS. Methods: Demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, clinical findings, vascular risk factors, and Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS) test results, FRS and CVDr scores were recorded for 110 MS patients. Results: FRS and CVDr scores exhibited a significant negative correlation with the number of correct responses in the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (p < 0.001 for all) and California Verbal Learning Test–Second UK Edition (CVLT-II) test (p < 0.001 for all), and significant positive correlation with the number of incorrect responses in the CVLT-II (p < 0.001 for all). The total score of the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test Revised had a negative correlation with FRS and CVDr (p < 0.001 for both). BICAMS scores showed no significant correlation with smoking status, homocysteine, and uric acid levels. Conclusion: We suppose that vascular risk factors and FRS and CVDr scores may be associated with the deterioration of working memory, information processing speed, verbal learning, and memory in people with MS. Based on the potential impact of vascular risk factors on cognitive functions, our findings suggest that lifestyle changes, appropriate treatment, and using a multidisciplinary approach toward vascular risk factors during MS management may exhibit a positive effect on cognition in people with MS.

Objective: Fibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic rheumatic disease, the primary symptom of which is widespread body pain, accompanied by other symptoms, and infections play a role in its etiopathogenesis. Our study aims to investigate the symptoms between the patient group diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome after being infected with coronavirus disease 2019 and the fibromyalgia syndrome group without infection. Methods: In this study, 35 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia after having coronavirus disease 2019 and 35 patients diagnosed with non-coronavirus disease 2019 fibromyalgia according to the 2016 American College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria, a total of 70 patients, were evaluated. Widespread Pain Index, Symptom Severity Scale, Fibromyalgia Symptom Scale, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Jenkins Sleep Scale, Fatigue Severity Scale, and Visual Analogue Scale were used. Results: In the study, sociodemographic findings such as age, weight, height, body mass index, marital status, education, Widespread Pain Index, Symptom Severity Scale, Fibromyalgia Symptom Scale, and fibromyalgia syndrome diagnostic crite- ria were high and similar in both groups. Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Jenkins Sleep Scale, Fatigue Severity Scale, and Visual Analogue Scale-pain scores, which were increased in both groups, were statistically higher and more significant in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 fibromyalgia syndrome group than in the fibromyalgia syndrome group (P < .001). The scores of fibromyalgia effect, anxiety and sleep disorders, fatigue, and pain severity were higher in fibro- myalgia patients after coronavirus disease 2019. Conclusions: In this study, we revealed that fibromyalgia symptoms might develop after coronavirus disease 2019 and, unlike idiopathic fibromyalgia, symptoms of anxiety and sleep disturbance, fatigue, and pain may be more severe. Thus, we showed that coronavirus disease 2019 could negatively affect general health more than idiopathic fibromyalgia syndrome.

According to population-based studies, lung cancer is the prominent reason for cancer-related mortality worldwide in males and is also rising in females at an alarming rate. Sorafenib (SOR), which is approved for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma, is a multitargeted protein kinase inhibitor. Additionally, SOR is the subject of interest for preclinical and clinical trials in lung cancer. This study was designed to assess in vivo the possible effects of sorafenib (SOR) in diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced lung carcinogenesis and examine its probable mechanisms of action. A total of 30 adult male rats were divided into three groups (1) control, (2) DEN, and (3) DEN + SOR. The chemical induction of lung carcinogenesis was performed by injection of DEN intraperitoneally at 150 mg/kg once a week for two weeks. The DEN-administered rats were co-treated with SOR of 10 mg/kg by oral gavage for 42 alternate days. Serum and lung tissue samples were analyzed to determine SRY-box transcription factor 2 (SOX-2) levels. The tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) levels were measured in lung tissue supernatants. Lung sections were analyzed for cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) histopathologically. In addition, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence methods, respectively. SOR reduced the level of SOX-2 that maintenance of cancer stemness and tumorigenicity, and TNF-α and IL-1β levels. Histopathological analysis demonstrated widespread inflammatory cell infiltration, disorganized alveolar structure, hyperemia in the vessels, and thickened alveolar walls in DEN-induced rats. The damage was markedly reduced upon SOR treatment. Further, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence analysis also revealed increased expression of COX-2 and JNK expression in DEN-intoxicated rats. However, SOR treatment alleviated the expression of these inflammatory markers in DEN-induced lung carcinogenesis. These findings suggested that SOR inhibits DEN-induced lung precancerous lesions through decreased inflammation with concomitant in reduced SOX-2 levels, which enables the maintenance of cancer stem cell properties.

Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) is responsible for the therapeutic effects of indomethacin, while inhibition of the COX-1 enzyme and oxidative stress are responsible for its gastro-toxic effects. It has been reported that pycnogenol increases the expression of COX-1, suppresses the expression rate of COX-2 and oxidative stress. Our aim in this study is to investigate the antiinflammatory activities of indomethacin, pycnogenol, and their combination (PI) in rats and to examine their effects on stomach tissue. In the study, anti-inflammatory activity was investigated in carrageenan-induced inflammatory paw edema in albino Wistar male rats. Effects on stomach tissue were performed by applying the previous method. PI, indomethacin and pycnogenol were the best suppressors of carrageenan inflammation and oxidative stress in paw tissue, respectively. While the groups with the lowest COX-1 activity in paw tissue were IC, PIC and PC, respectively, PIC, IC and PC were the ones that best inhibited the increase in COX-2 activity. Pycnogenol inhibited the increase of malondialdehyde, the decrease of total glutathione and COX-1 in the stomach, and significantly suppressed the formation of indomethacin ulcers. Our experimental results showed that pycnogenol reduced the toxic effect of indomethacin on the stomach and increased anti-inflammatory activity. This beneficial interaction of pycnogenol and indomethacin suggests that PI will provide superior success in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Objectives: Metastases and primary malignancies are common in the liver. Local ablative applications such as transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and transarterial radioembolization (TARE) provide minimally invasive and safe treatment in unresectable liver tumors. Early detection of response to treatment prevents unnecessary toxicity and cost in non-responder patients and provides an earlier use of other options that may be effective. This study aimed to identify the role of18F-fluorothymidine (FLT) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in the assessment of early response to TACE and TARE treatments in patients with unresectable primary and metastatic liver tumors. Methods: This single-center study included 63 patients who underwent18F-FLT PET/CT for response evaluation after TACE and TARE. After excluding 20 patients whose data were missing 43 TARE-receiving patients were analyzed. The compatibility of change in semi-quantitative values obtained from the18F-FLT PET/CT images with the treatment responses detected in18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT, CT, and MR images and survival was evaluated. Results: There was no correlation between early metabolic, morphological response, and18F-FLT uptake pattern, and change in standardized uptake values (SUV) which were ΔSUVmax, ΔSUVmean, ΔSUVpeak., ΔSUVmean, ΔSUVpeak values. There was no significant correlation between18F-FLT uptake pattern, ΔSUVmax, ΔSUVmean, ΔSUVpeak, and overall survival, progression-free survival (PFS) for the target lobe PFS for the whole-body. The survival distributions for the patients with >30% change in ΔSUVmax and ΔSUVpeak values were statistically significantly longer than the patients with <30% change (p<0.009 and p<0.024, respectively). Conclusion: There was significant longer PFS for target liver lobe in patients with more than 30% decrease in18F-FLT SUVmax and SUVpeak of the liver lesion in primary and metastatic unresectable liver tumors undergoing TARE.
