Güler, Özlem; Üzel, Murat; Tepe, Dilşat; Aksoy, Firdevs; Çınar, Güle; Memikoğlu, Kemal Osman; Durdu, Bülent; Ünver Ulusoy, Tülay; Benli̇, Aysun; Karakaşoğlu, Zeynep

This multicentre retrospective study investigated the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and fluconazole resistance rates of Candida species in osteoarticular infections across Turkey as well as the factors influencing complete recovery. Data were gathered from 73 adult patients diagnosed with proven or probable Candida-associated osteoarticular infections between 2015 and 2025 from 20 healthcare centres. The most common clinical presentation was spondylodiscitis, followed by the involvement of phalangeal bones in the hands and feet. Non-albicansCandida species accounted for 37/73 cases (50.7%), with Candida parapsilosis being the most frequent. Fluconazole resistance was low among C. albicans isolates (3%) but higher among non-albicans yeasts (27%). Bacterial co-infection, predominantly Gram-positive bacteria, was detected in 52.1% of cases. Diabetes was present in 50/73 patients (68.5%), particularly insulin-dependent diabetes, and was a prominent comorbidity that may have also contributed as a predisposing factor. Radiological detection of osteomyelitis was achieved in 69.9% of patients. Fluconazole was the most commonly used antifungal agent (74%) with a median treatment duration of 90 days. Multivariate analysis revealed that surgical debridement was significantly associated with a higher odds of clinical recovery (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 5.764; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.360–24.434; P = .017), whereas diabetes mellitus was significantly associated with a lower odds of total recovery (aOR, 0.205; 95% CI, 0.053–0.792; P = .022). In conclusion, this multicentre study provides epidemiological data and fluconazole resistance rates of Candida species causing osteoarticular infections in Turkey, highlights the occurrence of C. auris in this cohort, and identifies surgical intervention and diabetes mellitus as factors significantly associated with recovery.

Comparison of artifact values of prosthodontic materials with 2 different cone beam computed tomography devices

Naralan, Muhammed Enes; Ozdogan, Alper; Guller, Mustafa Taha; Miloglu, Ozkan

Statement of problem: Prosthodontic materials may cause unexpected artifacts in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, but studies quantifying these artifacts are sparse. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the artifact expression of fixed prosthodontic materials with different CBCT devices. Material and methods: Ten prosthodontic materials (Co-Cr-Mo alloy, interim acrylic resin, polyetheretherketone, feldspathic ceramic, lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic, zircon core, and 3 monolithic zirconias) were scanned with 2 CBCT devices. The materials were placed in polymethyl methacrylate resin to simulate clinical conditions. To assess the impact of the devices on artifacts, the gray values of 8 areas in each material image were analyzed. The data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank tests (α=.05). Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the artifact expression of the materials (P<.001) and between CBCT devices (P<.001). Conclusions: The artifact expression of polymeric and ceramic materials in CBCT images was less than that of other materials. The milliampere-second (mAs) value of CBCT devices had a significant impact on the artifact level.

Tramadol, a central analgesic drug, is used to treat moderate to severe pain but can cause reproductive disorders. The pathogenesis of tramadol-induced reproductive damage may involve increased oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokines, ATP depletion, and reduced antioxidant levels. In this study, subjects were divided into four groups: healthy control (HC), tramadol only (TM), ATP only (ATP), and ATP + tramadol (ATM). ATP was administered intraperitoneally at 4 mg/kg, and tramadol was administered orally at 50 mg/kg. Distilled water was given to the HC group. This regimen was repeated for three weeks. At the end of the treatment, testicular tissues from six rats in each group were analyzed biochemically and histopathologically after euthanasia. The remaining rats’ reproductive functions were evaluated. Long-term tramadol exposure resulted in oxidative stress, inflammation in testicular tissue, and reduced male reproductive capacity. Thinning of seminiferous tubule walls and thickening of basement membrane, irregularity in germ cells, increase in interstitial connective tissue, congestion in vessels, increase in Leyding cells and hyperplasia were found in the TM group. ATP treatment significantly reduced tramadol-induced increases in oxidants and pro-inflammatory cytokines, reversed the decline in antioxidants, and mitigated infertility in testicular tissue. Furthermore, ATP preserved the morphology of the testicular tissue. These findings suggest that ATP may offer therapeutic potential for tramadol-induced infertility.

Durmaz, Alper; Mizan Kahyaoğlu, İbrahim; Can Aytar, Erdi; Danışman Kalındemirtaş, Ferdane; Sert, Esra; Erol-Bozkurt, Ayşe; Karakuş, Selcan

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide and the third most common cancer overall. In this study, we investigate the anti-colon cancer potential of phytochemically, and thermally synthesised novel green carbon dots based on Rhododendron luteum (RL-CDs). A new synthesis method was used to produce carbon dots obtained from the Rhododendron luteum (RL) plant in an environmentally friendly manner. The green RL were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and artificial intelligence (AI)-based TEM analysis. The FTIR spectrum showed peaks corresponding to the hydroxyl (−OH) vibration of polyphenols at 3500 cm−1, the C=O vibration of cellulose derivatives at 1728 cm−1, and the C−O stretching of primary alcohol at 1041 cm−1. Two UV absorption peaks at roughly 253 nm (UV−C range), and 320 nm (UV−B range) were observed. The size of the green RL was measured to be less than 50 nm, and its morphology was characterized as dumbbell-shaped through TEM analysis. In-vitro studies were performed with HCT116 colon cancer, MCF-7 breast cancer, and normal HUVEC cells. The results demonstrated that the RL-CDs exhibited selective cytotoxic activity against HCT116 colon cancer cells. The results show that the RL extract stimulates cancer cell death by decreasing the CD44/24 ratio, and increasing apoptotic activity. These observations suggest that green RL-CDs could be an effective anticancer agent in colon cancer therapy, investigating their potential in this direction could be a promising way for future research.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), one of the most widely used chemotherapy drugs, is known to cause widespread toxicity and irreparable tissue damage. The purpose of this work was to analyze the phytochemical components of Prunus laurocerasus (PL) fruit extract using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and to look into the effectiveness of PL pretreatment on 5-FU-induced liver damage. The study consisted of control (C), PL, 5-FU, PL+5-FU groups, and PL groups received 500 mg/kg PL as pretreatment for seven days. On the eighth day, 100 mg/kg 5-FU was administered intraperitoneally as a single dose to the PL+5-FU and 5-FU groups. In the LC-MS/MS results, it was determined that the phenolic compounds found in the foreground in PL were quinic acid and chlorogenic acid. PL pretreatment increased total antioxidant status levels and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) expression and also decreased Keap1, total oxidant status, oxidative stress index levels, and Bcl-2-associated X protein, Caspase-3, and light chain-3B expressions. 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels were higher in the 5-FU group compared to the C and PL groups. Moreover, in the PL+5-FU group, the levels were similar to the C, PL, and 5-FU groups. In conclusion, PL pretreatment demonstrated hepatoprotective action via regulating the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1/nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 pathway in 5-FU-induced liver damage, lowering oxidative stress, and decreasing apoptosis and autophagy from programmed cell death.

Turkish adaptation of the artificial intelligence ethics scale (EAI): a validity and reliability study for nursing students

Agaoglu, Ferhat Onur; Tarsuslu, Sinan; Koçak, Daimi; Baş, Murat

Objective: This study was designed to culturally adapt the “Attitude towards Artificial Intelligence Ethics (EAI)” scale into Turkish and to evaluate its validity and reliability in the Turkish population. Methods: This study was designed as methodological research to adapt the Attitudes Towards EAI Scale into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties. The linguistic and cultural adaptation of the scale was carried out using the translation-back translation method. The study sample sample consisted of 656 undergraduate nursing students studying at a university in Türkiye. Participants were determined by a simple random sampling method, and voluntary participation was taken as a basis. Results: When the findings were evaluated, the results of the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) showed that the original five-factor structure of the scale (transparency, harmlessness, privacy, responsibility, and fairness) was largely preserved. According to the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) results, it was determined that the five-factor model had good fit values. The scale’s internal consistency was evaluated with Cronbach Alpha (α) coefficient, and α values for all sub-dimensions ranged between 0.85 and 0.95. These results show that the scale has a high level of reliability. In addition, composite reliability (CR) values above 0.70 and average variance extracted (AVE) values above 0.50 supported the convergent and discriminant validity of the scale. Furthermore, discriminant validity was further confirmed by MSV (< 0.31) and ASV (< 0.18), and EFA results via the FACTOR program (RMSEA = 0.047, CFI = 0.993, NNFI = 0.985) also supported the five-factor structure. Measurement invariance across gender was established at all levels (∆CFI < 0.01). Conclusion: The results show that the EAI is an appropriate tool for assessing university students’ attitudes toward artificial intelligence ethics in Turkish society. Implications: In this direction, testing the scale in different professional groups, age groups, and cultural contexts in the future may expand its generalizability and usage areas. In addition, such scales are thought to provide important contributions to educational programs and policy development processes to increase ethical awareness in today’s rapidly developing artificial intelligence technologies.

The relationship between depression, daughter-in-law relationship, and sexual quality of life in postpartum women

Tuncer, Sevinç Köse; Yilmaz, Figen Alp

The postpartum period is a process that negatively affects women’s sexual quality of life. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between depression, the daughter-in-law relationship and sexual quality of life in women in the postpartum period. Cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2021 and August 2022 with face-to-face interviews with 200 postpartum women who applied to family health centers in a province in Turkey. Data were collected with the Personal Information Form, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Mother-in-Law/Daughter-in-Law Relationship Scale and Sexual Quality of Life Questionnaire. In the study, it was determined that there was a significant weak negative correlation between the Postnatal Depression, Mother-in-Law/Daughter-in-Law Relationship and Sexual Quality of Life. It was also determined that breastfeeding status, having problems with postpartum sexuality, evaluation of postpartum sexual life, communication with the partner after birth, receiving information about sexuality from postpartum health personnel, and the relationship with the mother-in-law were predictors of the quality of sexual life in women in the postpartum period (p < 0.05). There are many factors that affect the sexual quality of life in women during the postpartum period. Therefore, healthcare personnel can provide psychosocial care and counseling services to enhance women’s sexual quality of life during this time.

Protective Effect of Probiotics on Cardiac Damage in Experimental Sepsis Model Induced by Lipopolysaccharide in Rats

Taş, Necip Gökhan; Aktaş, Osman; Taş, Hakan Gökalp; Zırh, Selim; Kurt, Nezahat; Uslu, Hakan

Background and Objective: Probiotics have been shown to be effective in controlling various adverse health conditions such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and neurological diseases. However, to our knowledge, there is no research on the preventive effect of probiotics on heart damage caused by infections. This study examined the preventive benefits of probiotics against sepsis-related heart injury using a rat model caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Materials and Methods: Four groups of twenty-four male Wistar albino rats, each with six rats, were set up. For 14 days, Group 1 (Sham Group) was given oral normal saline, intraperitoneal Escherichia coli O111-B4 lipopolysaccharide (LPS Group) was given to Group 2, and oral probiotics were given to Group 3 (Probiotic Group). Escherichia coli O111-B4 lipopolysaccharide was injected intraperitoneally after Group 4 (Probiotic + LPS) received oral probiotics containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 (109 CFU/day). Blood samples were taken twenty-four hours following the administration of LPS. The animals were then euthanized by cervical dislocation, and samples of cardiac tissue were taken in order to assess any damage to the heart. The following serum values were measured: C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB), cardiac troponin subunit I (cTn-I), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). The TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), Total Oxidant Status (TOS), Total Antioxidant Status (TAS), Oxidative Stress Index (OSI), CRP, CK-MB, and cTn-I levels were assessed in tissue samples. Additionally, staining techniques were used to analyze histopathological alterations in tissues. Results: With the exception of serum IL-6 (p = 0.111), tissue and serum cytokine levels were considerably greater in the sepsis group (Group 2) than in the other groups (p < 0.05 to <0.001). The TAS, GSH, and SOD levels were significantly lower (p < 0.05 to <0.001) in septic rats, although the tissue levels of TOS, OSI, and MDA were significantly higher. With the exception of serum CRP in Group 3 (p = 0.328), the CK-MB, CRP, and cTn-I levels were considerably higher in Group 2 than in the other groups (p < 0.01 to <0.001). When compared to the other groups, histopathological examination showed significant alterations in the LPS group. Conclusions: Probiotics showed positive effects on oxidative stress markers and dramatically decreased sepsis-induced cardiac damage in the LPS-induced sepsis model. These results imply that probiotics could be used as a therapeutic approach to lessen the cardiac damage brought on by sepsis.

Background: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), a zoonotic agent in the Nairoviridae family (genus Orthonairovirus), is a high-priority pathogen. CCHFV infection causes Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a human disease with case fatality rates of up to 40%. Serological surveillance of CCHFV in animals and humans is crucial for ecological studies and public health. Methods: We developed CCHFV mix-and-read assays utilizing split-NanoLuc technology (NanoBiT) to detect anti-CCHFV antibodies against the nucleoprotein (NP) stalk region and the GP38 glycoprotein. These species- and isotype-agnostic assays provide results in ∼30 min. Using serum samples from RT-PCR-confirmed CCHF cases collected during and after hospitalization, we investigated anti-NP and anti-GP38 antibody development. The performance of the mix-and-read assays was compared to the NP-based IDScreen® CCHF commercial assay using human sera, and cross-reactivity potential was evaluated using a diverse panel of anti-orthonairovirus antisera raised in mice. Findings: In human convalescent cases (n = 21), mix-and-read assay concordance between anti-GP38 and anti-NP antibody detection was 100%. Both mix-and-read assays and IDScreen® CCHF demonstrated identical sensitivity of 95.2% in convalescent patients. The specificity of the NP assay was 98.9%, and that of GP38 was 99.7%, both comparable to IDScreen® CCHF (specificity: 99.7%). Cross-reactivity against CCHF NP and GP38, regardless of assay type, was primarily observed in antisera raised against other orthonairoviruses within the Nairobi sheep disease genogroup. Interpretation: The simplicity and robust performance of the CCHFV mix-and-read assays make them ideal tools for supporting serological surveillance in humans and animals. Furthermore, the inclusion of the GP38 antigen alongside NP enhances the precise identification of retrospective CCHF cases, further strengthening broad surveillance efforts. Lichen extracts inhibit Candida albicans growth and biofilm formation via cAMP-PKA and Cek1 MAPK signaling pathway

Sumlu, Esra; Aydin, Merve; Korucu, Emine Nedime; Ozturk, Ali; Emsen, Bugrahan

The increasing prevalence of Candida infections and growing concerns about antifungal resistance have encouraged research into new therapeutic agents from natural sources. This study investigated the antifungal activity of Dermatocarpon miniatum (L.) W. Mann and Parmelia saxatilis (L.) Ach. lichen extracts against Candida species, focusing on their antibiofilm effects and underlying molecular mechanisms. Methanol and aqueous extracts of both lichens were prepared and evaluated against four reference and 19 clinical Candida strains using microdilution methods. This study employed a multi-modal approach to explore the antibiofilm effect of lichen extracts on Candida albicans, including CCK-8 assay for antibiofilm capacity, qRT-PCR for biofilm-related (cAMP-PKA and Cek1 MAPK pathways) gene expressions, field emission scanning electron microscopy for morphological assessment, and Galleria mellonella infection model for in vivo evaluation. Antifungal susceptibility tests revealed only methanol extracts showed antifungal activity, with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 160 to 2500 μg/mL for P. saxatilis methanol extract (ParM) and 320–2500 μg/mL for D. miniatum methanol extract (DerM). ParM (1250 μg/mL) significantly reduced biofilm formation and down-regulated key genes involved in both pathways. Methanol extracts of lichens disrupted hyphal networks and cell integrity. In the Galleria mellonella model, DerM provided protection similar to fluconazole, while ParM provided 60 % survival. These findings indicate that lichen extracts, particularly ParM, inhibit Candida albicans biofilm formation by downregulating genes in the cAMP-PKA and Cek1 MAPK pathways. Despite the promising antibiofilm and in vivo activities of these extracts, their limited antifungal activity against Candida suggests that further research is needed for their therapeutic potential.

by means of histomorphological, immunohistochemical, biochemical, electrophysiological, and clinical evaluations. MATERIAL and METHODS: Thirty-two female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups of eight animals each; Group 1 (control), Group 2 (axonotmesis + normal saline), Group 3 (axonotmesis + pregabalin 30 mg/kg), and Group 4 (axonotmesis + gabapentin 30 mg/kg). Medical treatment was given for the first seven days to groups 3 and 4. Functional recovery was assessed using electromyography (EMG) and the sciatic functional index (SFI). Sciatic nerves were excised for histomorphological, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemical examinations. Biomarkers were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. RESULTS: Significant improvement in SFI scores and EMG measurements were observed on the 28th day in groups 3 and 4 (the treated groups), while Group 2 (untreated) exhibited inadequate recovery. Histomorphological and immunohistochemical analyses revealed notable decreases in Wallerian degeneration, necrosis, inflammation, and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) expression levels in the treated groups compared to Group 2. The groups receiving medical treatment exhibited increased staining areas for nerve growth factor (NGF). Biochemical assessment indicated elevated levels of NGF, ciliary neurotrophic factor, transforming growth factor beta, and myelin basic protein in the treated groups compared to Group 2. CONCLUSION: Overall, the study findings suggest that both pregabalin and gabapentin exert neuroprotective effects and can contribute to the regeneration process, with no apparent superiority of one over the other.

Exploring multifocal IOL experiences: A qualitative study of patient and physician narratives on YouTube

    Gürsoy, Nurcan; Gürsoy, Ersan

This study aims to compare patient- and physician-generated YouTube videos on multifocal lens surgery experiences, examining how online narratives align with or diverge from professional medical perspectives. A cross-sectional qualitative analysis of 48 Turkish-language YouTube videos related to multifocal lens surgeries was conducted. Inclusion criteria required videos to be longer than 1 minute, have at least 1000 views, maintain suitable visual quality, and exclude direct advertising. The final sample included 38 doctor-produced and 10 patient-produced videos. Transcripts totaling 62,707 words underwent thematic analysis, with 2 researchers independently coding the data. Seven themes emerged: patient satisfaction and managing expectations, night vision problems and dysphotopsia, importance of individualized lens selection, technological advances in lenses, postoperative adaptation and management, ethical issues and patient information, and surgical procedure's practical aspects. Both doctors and patients largely agree that proper preoperative counseling and realistic expectations are key to favorable outcomes. Patients generally confirm good vision and comfort but may experience dissatisfaction when initial hopes are unmet or communication is insufficient. Dysphotopsias and adaptation periods are recognized by both groups as common, albeit temporary. Notably, patient videos attracted higher viewer engagement, suggesting that personal narratives resonate strongly with the audience. Online patient narratives both reinforce and, at times, question the information provided by physicians, highlighting the importance of clear communication, personalized intraocular lens choices, and active expectation management throughout the treatment process. management. For primary care physicians and ophthalmologists, integrating these insights can enhance patient education, improve the referral process, and ensure that evolving IOL technologies better meet patient needs and experiences.

Objective. The aim of this study is to compare the odour threshold and odour identification tests of women of reproductive age and postmenopausal period and to examine the relationship between the duration of menopause and olfactory dysfunction. Methods. Eighty women of reproductive age and in the postmenopausal period were included in this prospective study. These were divided into four groups of 20 women each: Group 1, reproductive period; Group 2, postmenopausal period (0-5 years); Group 3, postmenopausal period (6-10 years; and Group 4, postmenopausal period (more than 10 years). All the women enrolled underwent complete ear, nose, and throat examinations, followed by odour threshold test and odour identification test. The results were then compared among the groups. Results. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of age, odour threshold test and odour identification test (p < 0.001, p = 0.016, and p < 0.001, respectively). Age adjusted results indicated that there were no statistically significant difference in odour threshold test scores between groups compared to the reference group 1. However, women in group 3 were 90% less likely to have higher odour ıdentification test scores compared to women in group 1 [OR (95% CI): 0.10 (0.01-0.73); p = 0.025]. Conclusions. Olfactory dysfunction is seen in the postmenopausal period. However, this is correlated with age. Olfactory dysfunction in the postmenopausal period appears to be the result of aging together with hormonal changes.

Changes of plasma amino acid levels and metabolic pathways in isotretinoin therapy: ınsights into managing acne vulgaris side effects

Akman, Tugrul Cagri; Yazıcı, Mustafa; Atila, Alptug

Acne vulgaris can be effectively treated with isotretinoin, however, there are several side effects both during and after the treatment. Preventing these side effects is important for continued treatment. This study focused on the relationship between the changes in the levels of plasma amino acids of patients with acne vulgaris after three months of isotretinoin treatment and the side effects. A pre- and post-treatment plasma sample of 35 patients was collected. Samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. After treatment, the plasma levels of 15 amino acids changed statistically. While L-arginine, taurine, L-asparagine, and L-proline levels decreased, L-serine, L-alanine, and L-cystine levels also increased. (p < 0.05) When the amino acid profiles of male and female patients before and after treatment were compared, the plasma levels of L-arginine (p = 0.0017), L-cystine (p = 0.0224) and L-histidine (p = 0.0167) were statistically different. Additionally, the correlation matrix analysis revealed a strong correlation (R > 0.8) between L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-norvaline, and L-valine. The effect of isotretinoin treatment on eighteen metabolic pathways such as cysteine and methionine metabolism, glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism is strongly related to the treatment of therapeutic and side effects of isotretinoin. According to the results of the study, the use of L-arginine, L-asparagine, N-acetylcysteine and taurine supplements during isotretinoin treatment may help avoid side effects of skin dryness, blepharitis, nail fragility, and fatigue. As a result, the study provided useful information for enhancing the safety and efficacy of isotretinoin treatment, as well as lowering isotretinoin-related side effects.

Enhanced nutritional and health benefits of buckwheat fiber-enriched yogurt with astaxanthin supplementation: a comprehensive analysis of storage quality

    Yangilar, Filiz; Erdaş, Zeynep Tuba

This study aims to evaluate the potential of Kavılca fiber and astaxanthin to enhance yogurts’ nutritional content and antioxidant capacity, thereby contributing to developing a novel food product with significant health benefits. In this regard, the effects of different concentrations (1%, 1.5%, and 2%) of buckwheat fiber and astaxanthin on the quality properties of yogurt during a 21-day storage period were investigated. Enriching yogurts with buckwheat fiber and astaxanthin improved the viability, viscosity, water-holding capacity, and antioxidant activity of yogurt bacteria. The results indicated that the presence of astaxanthin had a positive impact on radical scavenging activity in samples, with CKA3 showing the highest radical scavenging activity (99.46%) after a storage period of 21 days while also exhibiting minimum serum separation among groups CKA3. Additionally, color parameters were significantly influenced by the addition of buckwheat fiber and astaxanthin (p < 0.05). The addition of buckwheat fiber and astaxanthin also positively affected the textural properties of yogurt samples during the storage period, and the most preferred sample was CKA1, along with the control samples.

Antioxidant and Antiproliferative Activities of Three Endemic Scrophularia Species: S. erzincanica, S. subaequiloba, and S. libanotica var. armena

Ulutaş, Yakup; Köksal, Ekrem; Akşit, Hüseyin; Altay, Ahmet

In this study, methanolic extracts from the aerial parts and roots of three endemic Scrophularia species (Scrophularia erzincanica, Scrophularia subaequiloba, and Scrophularia libanotica var. armena) were evaluated for their antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. Antioxidant potential was determined through total phenolic and flavonoid content, DPPH radical scavenging, and FRAP assays. Antiproliferative effects were assessed against A549 (lung) and MDA-MB-453 (breast) cancer cells using the XTT assay. S. libanotica var. armena had the highest total phenolic content (129.48 mg GAE/g), while S. subaequiloba showed the strongest FRAP activity (200.67 µg TE/g) and DPPH radical scavenging (IC50: 36.83 µg/mL). S. subaequiloba extracts exhibited 83% inhibition against A549 cells and 87% against MDA-MB-453 cells. HPLC–DAD analysis revealed high verbascoside content in S. libanotica var. armena (101.24 mg/g). These findings highlight S. libanotica var. armena as a potent antioxidant source and S. subaequiloba as a promising anticancer agent.

INVESTIGATION OF THE PREVALENCE OF HYPODONTIA IN THE PERMANENT DENTITION OF CHILDREN; [Çocuklarda Daimi Dentisyondaki Hipodonti Prevalansının İncelenmesi]

    Ocak, Ali

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and distribution of congenital tooth deficiency in the pediatric patient population in Erzincan region. In this study, digital panoramic radiographs of 1421 children (714 girls, 707 boys) aged 6-12 years who applied to the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Clinic of Erzincan Oral and Dental Health Education and Research Hospital were examined. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the number and rates of missing teeth, and the chi-square test (p<0.05) was used to evaluate whether there was a significant difference between the groups. The prevalence of congenital tooth deficiency was found to be 6.22% in males, 5.18% in females and 5.70% in total. No statistically significant difference was found between gender and tooth deficiency (p>0.05). It was determined that mandibular second premolars were the most frequently missing teeth, followed by maxillary lateral teeth and maxillary second premolars. Hypodontia frequency was observed as 5.70% in patients living in Erzincan region. Accordingly, digital panoramic radiographs taken in children over 6 years of age who apply for dental examination are of great importance for the diagnosis and detection of possible hypodontia. Early diagnosis of congenitally missing teeth plays a crucial role in treatment planning that provides patients with lower costs and more accurate occlusion in the future.
