Silence in turns: traces of discrimination in different generations of Turkish migrant families in Hamburg (1961–2021)

    Arpacı, Murat

Following the labor agreement signed between Germany and Turkey in 1961, many Turkish families gradually settled in Germany, and narratives of discrimination became ingrained in these families’ histories and intergenerational memories from the very beginning. This study examines how discrimination experienced by families migrating from Turkey to Germany as guest workers was transmitted and manifested across different generations. In-depth interviews were conducted with fourteen members of seven families–including first-generation guest workers and their children–as well as with two teachers who witnessed the second generation’s schooling. The study explores discrimination encountered by different generations within the same families over time, and institutional practices that produced and perpetuated these experiences. The discrimination recounted by the first generation essentially encompasses the medical examinations required to become a guest worker, which also evoke colonial patterns, and the experiences of discrimination they faced in workplaces in Germany. Discrimination reported by second-generation participants occurred in both educational settings and workplaces. The family memory space for this generation’s experiences of discrimination is formed by schools known as Sonderschule. The disproportionately high placement of second-generation immigrant children in these schools–which are primarily for children with learning disabilities and carry exclusionary and stigmatizing connotations–has sparked debates on institutional discrimination. This research addresses the subalternizing effects of both the medical examinations and the Sonderschule system within the collective memory of Turkish guest worker families, manifested in intergenerational shame and silence. It also investigates how this shame and silence are reproduced via institutional mechanisms. As the findings show, individual acts of discrimination are collectively internalized by families, and institutions play a constitutive role in shaping these experiences.

Age-related variations in somatotype: a study on older adults in Türkiye

Nalbant, Özgür; Gülsoy, Hatice; Özdemir Güler, Zümre; Özütürker, Sevda; Kılıç, Barış; Ay, Faruk; Özgün Başibüyük, Gülüşan

This study aims to investigate the age and sex-related variations in somatotype among older adults in Türkiye using the Heath-Carter method. Anthropometric measurements were taken from 2128 participants (1,009 males and 1119 females) aged 65 and over, selected through stratified sampling from the seven regions of Türkiye. The findings indicated that the most prevalent somatotype in both sexes was Endo-Mesomorph, accounting for 50% of males and 58.1% of females. With advancing age, a decrease was observed in body weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), and body fat percentage in both sexes. Age-related remodeling of body composition was further reflected in somatotype patterns: while endomorphy declined in males, both endomorphy and mesomorphy decreased progressively in females. Across all age groups, mesomorphy remained more dominant than endomorphy, suggesting relative preservation of muscularity. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the Endo-Mesomorph somatotype is predominant among older adults in Türkiye, with notable age- and sex-related differences: age-related changes include a decline in endomorphy in males, while both endomorphy and mesomorphy decrease in females. These results offer new evidence from a large Turkish cohort and align with international findings on age-related body composition remodeling, supporting the development of tailored, culturally relevant interventions for healthy aging.

Digital Capitalism and Child Labor Exploitation on YouTube

    Bakioğlu, Akın

This article examines the issue of child labor exploitation on YouTube through the phenomenon of “kidfluencers” - children who create video content and gain a large following on the platform. It discusses kidfluencing within the framework of digital capitalism and platform capitalism, where companies monetize users' data. While kidfluencing can allow children to be creative and gain income, it also risks exploiting their labor and compromising their privacy and well-being. The article analyzes several popular kidfluencer YouTube channels and finds that some children are producing content in a way that resembles intense work. It highlights how digital capitalism leads to the commodification and alienation of digital labor. While kidfluencers benefit platforms and brands through promotion, they may not receive fair compensation for their efforts. The involvement of parents also raises issues about children's autonomy and protection. Overall, the article argues that while kidfluencing seems like casual play, in some cases it amounts to a hidden form of child labor that fails to uphold children's rights. It calls for stronger regulations to ensure kidfluencers are not subject to exploitation of their immaterial labor.

Building Pious Generations in Turkey: The Islamization of Childhood in the Children's Magazine of the Directorate of Religious Affairs

    Arpacı, Murat

The present study examines the recent ideological and cultural apparatuses aimed at the Islamization of children in Turkey through the example of the Children's Magazine, published periodically by the Directorate of Religious Affairs (DRA). Since 2002, under the Islamist government in Turkey, the Directorate of Religious Affairs has progressively evolved into an ideological apparatus that operates in alignment with the government's social objectives. The DRA, supported by significant state funding, has become an institution that holds discussions on matters of family, children, youth, and gender. Seeking to align the government's ideological goals with the Islamization of society, the Directorate of Religious Affairs has placed special emphasis on cultural policies, media, and publishing. The Children's Magazine is one of the monthly publications produced by the Directorate of Religious Affairs, which has evolved into a significant cultural enterprise. The magazine conveys a religious pedagogy rooted in Sunni Hanafi Islam and a nationalist-conservative family ideology. It not only reinforces the prevailing ideology on religious matters but also promotes the political strategies of the government and the newly established official historical narrative.
