Investigating the Effects of Environmental Factors upon the Technological Leadership Competencies of School Administrators

    İbili, Hakan; Özbaş, Mehmet

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of environmental factors such as the technological infrastructure of the school used for educational and administrative processes, physical facilities, economic opportunities, monthly income sources, receiving allowances, intra-school communication status and parent support status upon the technological leadership competencies of school administrators. Relational screening model was used in this study carried out with the quantitative research method. The whole population was accepted as the sample not determining the study sample. The study was carried out with 325 school administrators carrying on their duties in public schools in the city center and districts of Erzincan in 2020-2021 academic year. Among the school administrators, 166 (51.1%) were directors and 159 (48.9%) were vice directors. In the study, "Technology Leadership Competencies Scale for Education Administrators," and "Environmental Factor Form" and "Personal Information Form" developed by the researcher were used as data collection tools. Dummy coding was performed on environmental variables in order to perform correlation and regression analyzes on environmental factors as the categorical variables. Correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the variables, and regression analysis was employed to determine the level of prediction between two variables. It was determined that there was a positive, low level and statistically significant relationship between the technological infrastructure, physical facilities, economic opportunities and intra-school communication used in educational and administrative processes of the school and the technological leadership competencies. A positive, low and statistically significant relationship was also specified between good parental support to the school and technological leadership competencies. It was also revealed that the environmental factors called "Monthly Income Sources of the School" and "School Allowance" had no effect upon technological leadership competencies. It was determined that technological infrastructure of the school, physical facilities, economic opportunities and school's technological infrastructure used in educational and administrative processes at a quite good level predicted technological leadership competencies. However, it was observed that determined predictive levels had an insufficient effect upon technological leadership competencies.

The Educational Inequalities in the Disadvantaged Social Strata of Romani Population

    Özbaş, Mehmet

The objective of this study is to determine the variables that create inequality for children from disadvantaged social strata in their process of compulsory education. The study was carried out in Erzincan, which is a significant city located in the eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, in 2017. Nearly, 117 parents from disadvantaged social strata participated in the study. Disadvantaged children face the most serious problems in education. Those families were poor and disadvantaged Romanies, so their children did not attend the school. The study reveals that the inhabitants of a disadvantaged social stratum of this study mostly come from the ethnic origin of Romanies. This study was designed in a descriptive research model and carried out with face-to-face interview method. The semi-structured interview form of “Educational Inequalities in Disadvantaged Social Strata” was used in this study. The semi-structured interview form has been developed for this study. The study also reveals that 76 percent of disadvantaged families are not able to receive any proper economic support from the state they needed for their children. The disadvantaged families claim that authorities have never told them the true meaning, significance, and functions of compulsory education. In addition, the study reveals that the biggest obstacles are having poorly educated parents and financial insecurity for disadvantaged families in terms of their social, economic, and individual growth. The study reveals that the lack of continuous cash transfers to the students of disadvantaged strata creates social injustice and inequality in compulsory education. It is highly recommended that continued economic support should be given for the students from disadvantaged families to meet their basic psychological and human needs.

Veteran principals’ views over the effect of positive discipline on classroom management for novice teachers

Kayalar, Fethi; Özbaş, Mehmet; Yalçın, Sinan; Uslu, Turgut; Erçetin, S.S.; Potas, N.

One of the most effective ways to manage problematic students misbehaving in the classroom is positive discipline rather than punishment or rewards. Through positive discipline, novice teachers do not only enjoy peaceful and efficient classroom environment, but they also encounter less trouble in managing the classroom and enable students to learn well and adapt their behaviours to meet expectations in courses. The outcomes of positive discipline applied in classroom include students’ own self-discipline, consistent communication, selfregulation, self-confidence, self-respect and respect for others, reinforcement of expectations and long-term solution. The aim of this study is to evaluate the views of the experienced school principals over encouraging novice teachers to practice positive discipline strategies and determine their roles on this issue. We asked two open-ended questions to the participant principals to obtain the data: “What are the discipline issues in classroom environment” and “What should novice teachers do to place positive discipline in classroom?” We used a qualitative research method to evaluate and compare the views of the principals and to determine their suggestions on encouraging novice teachers to achieve smooth management in classroom environment. The research was carried out with the participation of ten school principals managing various primary schools, secondary schools and high schools in some cities in Turkey. From the data obtained from principals, we can argue that the principals have the most important roles for novice teachers to develop positive discipline strategies in the classroom by making the suggestions that novice teachers should not run away from misbehaving students, not fight back and not scare and punish them for their unwanted misbehaviours.

Chaotic and complex situations in girls’ education: Problems and solutions

    Özbaş, Mehmet

It is mainly concentrated on variables which prevent girls’ education in this study. The aim of this study is to describe chaos, complication and antidemocratic practices that emerge on girls’ education. A wide comprehensive literature survey is performed on variables which concern the variables of girls’ education for the scope of the study. This study is a survey designed model that aims to define the properties concerning the girls’ education. Many social, economic, political and cultural problems create negative effects on girls’ education. Not being able to make democracy a life style brings along girls’ not being able to make use of education as it should be which is a human right. As a result, it is emphasized that only “whole democratic life style” practice for all could solve the problem of “social inequality of girls” which is enduring for ages.

Chaotic method in the process of preparation to transition to higher education and undergraduate placement exams

    Özbaş, Mehmet

In Turkey, high schools, as well as primary and secondary schools, were included within the scope of compulsory education as of 2012–2013 academic year. As the high school education was included into the scope of compulsory education, authority and responsibilities of secondary education managements incredibly increased in terms of providing 100% schooling of secondary education generation (Official Gazette. (2012). İlköğretim ve Eğitim Kanunu ile Bazı Kanunlarda Değişiklik Yapılmasına Dair Kanun. Kanun No.: 6287. Official Gazette dated 30/3/2012, number 28261). This led to provincial and district directorates of national education, including the Ministry of National Education as the leading institution, into a complex and chaotic process in terms of the administrative aspects they had to carry out. Moreover, secondary education school managements were obliged to actualize significant chaotic managerial implementations in terms of preparation to the exams of YGS (Transition to Higher Education Exam) and LYS (Undergraduate Placement Exam). In this research, the complexity and chaos experienced in secondary education schools regarding YGS and LYS exams were tried to be evaluated analyzing through chaotic management approach. The research was carried out with 71 high school final-grade students studying at Erzincan Anatolian High School in the province of Erzincan in 2015–2016 academic year. In the research, “Secondary Education Schools Student-Centered Individual Teaching and In-Class Social Academic Development Services Scale” developed by the researcher was used. According to the research findings, it was noticed that both individual academic development (X¯ = 3.52) and social academic development based upon in-class experiences (X¯ = 3.49) were tried to be fulfilled at “much level.” The research results revealed that YGS and LYS preparation implementations for Anatolian High School students required a chaotic, competitive, complex, and conflicting management in educational organizations.

Views of pre-service teachers related to the development of pedagogical formation training and design competences

    Özbaş, Mehmet; Mukhatayeva, Dinara

The importance of pedagogical formation training is remarkable for developing the professional competences of pre-service teachers. One of the basic functions of pedagogical formation is getting pre-service teachers have competences on teaching design through cooperative learning experiences in a social learning environment. During higher education, in-class experiences generally include socio-pedagogical learning processes fulfilled under the guidance of lecturers. The purpose of this research was to determine the views of pre-service teachers related to the development of pedagogical formation training and design competences. The research was carried out with 428 pre-service teachers who had pedagogical formation training in Erzincan University in 2016-2017 academic year. “The Scale for Pedagogical Formation Training, and Developing Design Competences of Pre-Service Teachers” was developed by the researchers. During the process of scale development, pre-implementation was administered with the participation of 83 pre-service teachers, and the scale was determined to have 2 factors. Total variance explained by the factors was 61.695%; and alpha reliability coefficient for the first factor was .923, and it was found to be .863 for the second factor. According to research findings, it was noticed that the perceptions related to the factor of “the quality of pedagogical formation training” had “high” level, and the perceptions related to the factor of “development of teaching design competences” had “medium” level performance.

Evaluating the application of possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education according to chaos theory

Avcı, Müjdat; Özbaş, Mehmet; Akbaşlı, Sait

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the situations related to possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education in terms of chaos theory. During the research process, the aim was to determine the extent to which socio-economic chaos arising from student characteristics affected the possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education. In democratic countries, where it is considered that almost all professions with a high social status cannot be acquired without having a higher education qualification, higher education as a fundamental human right should be disseminated to different classes of the society. In this research, functions of a democratic educational administration upon the possibility and equality of opportunity in higher education in Turkey were discussed within the scope of sociologic variables. The population of “The Research for Equality of Opportunity and Possibility in Higher Education within the Concept of Democratic and Sociologic Features” included 29,477 students studying at Erzincan and Mersin Universities in 2012–2013 academic year; and the study sample included 776 students chosen with random cluster sampling model according to the faculties of both universities. Students with illiterate mothers were found to have benefited from the secondary education at a lower level than the other student groups. The student groups with high school and university graduate mothers were found to have benefited from the secondary education opportunities at a higher level.

An example of chaos in the desired change of a society in literature: Intibah

    Arslan, Mahmut Abdullah; Özbaş, Mehmet

The Tanzimat Reform Movement aimed to give a new energy to a society which lost its confidence in life due to chaos. The expectation of the Ottoman society was to recover from this chaos. Influenced by Galip of Nicosia, Namik Kemal initially wrote classical poems of which form and content were old. After his acquaintance with Sinasi, he produced Western style works which were old in form but new in content. In his later works, both of these components were new. The subject matter of Intibah is simple and comes from social life. Intibah is regarded as the first literary novel of the Turkish literature written in Western novel technique including realistic depictions, places and psychological analyses. This chapter discusses the way the destruction of love, slavery, the women problem and imperfect aspects of family life in Ottoman society were handled by Namik Kemal. Both Namik Kemal and other modernists mentioned the problems but they could not offer deep solutions.
