The Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Version of the Nurses’ Spiritual Sensitivity Scale: A Methodological Study

    Binay, Şengül Korkmaz; Karakurt, Papatya

Objective: This study aims to adapt the Nurses’ Spiritual Sensitivity Scale (NSSS) into Turkish and to conduct its reliability and validity study. Methods: This methodological study included 267 nurses. The scale was back translated in order to confirm the linguistic equivalence. A Nurse Information Form and the NSSS were administered to these nurses. The opinions of 14 faculty members in the field of nursing were solicited to test the content validity index (CVI). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to establish the validity index and construct validity. Internal consistency analyses were performed with Cronbach’s α coefficients and item analyses. Time invariance (in terms of test–retest reliability) was analyzed to test the reliability of this scale. Fifty-one nurses were subjected to the test‒retest across 4-week intervals to identify the time invariance of the scale. Results: The CVI values of the items ranged from 0.918 to 1. The CFA confirmed the original 2-factor structure of the scale. The Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.894 for the subscale of nurses’ professional spiritual sensitivity and 0.887 for the subscale of nurses’ inner spiritual sensitivity. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the NSSS is a valid and reliable assessment instrument to assess the spiritual sensitivity of nurses.

Karakurt, Papatya; Ünsal, Ayla; Bilgin, Sonay; Özdemir, Selen

Introduction: Hypertension is a leading global public health problem requiring effective long-term self-management. This study aimed to determine the knowledge and self-efficacy levels of patients with hypertension and examine the relationship between these variables. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 200 hypertensive patients attending cardiology and internal medicine outpatient clinics of a training and research hospital between March and July 2024. Data were collected using the Patient Information Form, Hypertension Knowledge Level Scale (HK-LS), and Hypertension Self-Efficacy Scale (HSES). Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Spearman correlation analysis were used. Results: The mean HK-LS score was 17.23 ± 3.9 (range: 4-22), and the mean HSES score was 55.16 ± 6.4 (range: 41-72). Of the participants, 57% (n=114) were female, and 43% (n=86) were male. Female participants, individuals with higher education, better perceived income, regular exercise habits, and absence of comorbid disease had significantly higher knowledge and self-efficacy scores (p <0.01). A moderate positive correlation was found between knowledge and self-efficacy (p <0.01). Discussion: The findings indicate that increased hypertension-related knowledge is associated with stronger self-efficacy in disease management. Sociodemographic and lifestyle factors influence both variables. Conclusion: Improving hypertension knowledge may enhance self-efficacy and disease management. Tailored educational interventions targeting vulnerable groups are recommended. 2026, Bentham Science Publishers

Karakurt, Papatya; Firat, Meryem; Memiş, Şeyda Yetginler

Aim: This study was planned to determine online burnout, fatigue states of students and the associated factors. Design: This study was designed as a cross-sectional type of research. The study is of a quantitative type. Methods: The universe of this study consisted of all 890 students studying in the Department of Nursing and Nutrition Dietetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences in the spring semester of the 2023–2024 academic year at a university in the east of Türkiye. The sample of the study consisted of 570 students studying in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. The ‘Introductory Information Form’ was used to collect data, and the ‘Zoom Burnout and Fatigue Scale’ was used to determine the students' online burnout and fatigue status. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test in independent groups, variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation analysis were used in the analysis of data. Results: The mean age of the students included in the study was determined to be 21.77 ± 2.01; 40.9% were sophomores. It was determined that the students received 2.86 ± 1.07 points from the total scale. The maximum score obtained from the scale is 5. It was determined that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the scale and its sub-dimensions according to the difficulty of studying with distance education compared with studying with face-to-face education, difficulty in accessing information sources with distance education and difficulty in using information technologies (p < 0.05). Conclusions: As a result, students are showing average levels of the Zoom Burnout and Fatigue. In line with these findings, it can be suggested that when delivering theoretical courses via distance education, active learning methods should be used, students' access to course materials should be facilitated and their participation should be supported or encouraged. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Since nursing and dietetics are hands-on profession, practices must take place in a hospital setting and face-to-face. Online education should be used as a supplementary tool. Students should apply the online education they receive to their practice. Patient or Public Contribution: Participants provided data but were not involved in the study's design, outcome measures or conduct.

Ünsal, Ayla; Karakurt, Papatya; Yıldırım, Serhat

Objective: Nursing profession is a health discipline that includes theoretical knowledge and skills and requires practice. Therefore; scientific methods are used for practice in nursing profession as in every professional discipline. The method that has brought a scientific and planned approach to nursing care is nursing process. Nursing diagnosis, being the second phase of nursing process, provides a basis to nursing practices. The current study was undertaken to assess nurses’ perceptions towards nursing diagnosis in some variables. Methods: Nurses (n=265) who worked at a city hospital participated in this descriptive study voluntarily. To collect study data; Information Request Form that targeted at information on nurses’ socio-demographic characteristics and their nursing diagnosis and Perceptions of Nursing Diagnosis Survey (PNDS) were used. For the analyses of the data; numbers, percentages, means, Kruskall Wallis test, Mann Whitney U test and Spearman Correlation analysis were used. Results: It was found that nurses’ average age was 32.19±7.81, 74.7% of them were female, 58.1% of them had undergraduate academic degree and 30.9% of them worked for 6-10 years. It was identified that 93.2% of the nurses had training about nursing process, 92.5% of them found nursing process necessary and 62.6% of them had difficulty in data collection/assessment phase of nursing process. Nurses mostly diagnosed risk for infection, lack of knowledge, change in nutrition and risk for fall in their patients. Average PNDS score of the participant nurses was found to be 2.27±0.67. It was seen that there were significant differences between nurses’ gender, educational status and the clinical department where they worked and average scores of clear representation of patient situation and conceptual orientation. Conclusion: It was identified that although nurses had difficulty in every phase of the process, they had positive views of perceiving nursing diagnoses and some variables affected their perception towards nursing diagnosis. Nurses can be given on-job trainings about every phase of nursing process, particularly, about diagnosis phase.

Karakurt, Papatya; Tuncer, Sevinc Kose; Çiltas, Nadire Yildiz; Dogan, Mehmet

Providing care to someone with a chronic disease requires being physically, emotionally, and mentally energetic. In particular, the presence of a patient with a disease that requires palliative care changes daily activities and routines, increases responsibilities of those who take the responsibility for patient's care and changes the roles in the family. The objective of this study was to determine the care burden and social support levels among the caregivers providing care for patients hospitalized in palliative care clinics. Materials and Methods. The population of this descriptive and correlational study consisted of caregivers taking care of patients treated at the Palliative Care Clinic of Training and Research Hospital between May and October 2018; the sample consisted of 73 caregivers who volunteered to join the study and were open to communication. Data were collected by questioning patients and their caregivers about their sociodemographic characteristics, using the Caregiver Burden Scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Data analysis included percentages, the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Spearman's Correlation Coefficient. Results. The average caregivers' age was 45.44 +/- 13.76 years; 75.3% of caregivers were females, 30.1% of caregivers were literate or had primary school degrees. Caregiver's gender and educational levels were found not to affect caregiving and social support levels; however, the economic status affected caregiving and social support levels. There was a reverse correlation between the caregiver burden and their social support levels. Conclusions. With increased caregiver burden, their social support level decreased. Nurses caring for patients in palliative care clinics will benefit from educating and supporting caregivers about clinic and home care; it will result in a positive level of social support for both caregivers and patients receiving care.

    Olmaz, Dilek; Karakurt, Papatya

Background: Nursing process is a systematic and method used to determine one’s care needs and to answer them. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the extent to which nurses know and apply the nursing process when giving care. Methods: This descriptive study was consisted of 151 nurses and the sample consisted of 131 nurses. The data were collected using a personal information form and a Nursing Process Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using numbers, percentages, Kruskal-Wallis Variance Analysis, Mann-Whitney U test and Correlation analysis. Results: From the nurses included in the study, 77.9% stated that they found themselves competent in the nursing process and 94.7% that they considered it necessary to utilize the nursing process while giving care to patients in the clinic. The nurses experienced problems mostly in the data collection (36.6%) stage of the nursing process. It was found that average score obtained from questions that were correctly answered and addressed nurses’ the oretical knowledge about nursing process was 80.09±14.10 while average score obtained from questions that were correctly answered and addressed their practical knowledge through 3 sample cases was 78.30±23.31. Besides; it was noted that there was a positive but weak correlation between correctly answered the oretical questions and correctly answered practical questions (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was identified that knowledge level and implementation level of nursing process of nearly all the nurses were satisfactory but they experienced difficulties during data collection phase most. In line with these results; it may be recommended that importance of nursing process should be emphasized during nursing education and reinforced during professional career through on the job trainings.
