Gurses, Ahmet; Demiray, Seher; Dogar, Cetin; Uzunboylu, H
In the interactive direct teaching based on constructivist learning (IDTBCL) is evaluated as a mental transition or an oriented change from understanding (two dimensions) to conception (three dimensions). This approach focuses on a conceptual structure. Dissolution and the solution are subjects of common misconceptions. Therefore, these concepts have been selected as reference ones for the design practice. In this study, participants are fifty students whose are attending at a high school in Turkey. The halves of participants are selected as experimental group and control group, respectively. Pretest-posttest with control group, which is the one of the quasi-experimental research design, was used for applications. In traditional group (control group), the same instructor used behaviorist approach, and the interactive direct instruction based on constructivist learning (IDTBCL) was done in experimental group during two weeks. Before applications, a conceptual test was administrated to the groups as a pretest. According to pretest results, there was no difference between the groups in terms of conceptual achievement. Although teaching in each group is performed by the same instructor, there is a significantly difference between groups related to the instructor's the mentality about learning. The significant positive difference in the experimental group can be attributed to the students' positive attitude toward to the conceptualization and the creation of three-dimensional mental space of the knowledge e.g. about the concepts dissolution and the solution concepts. Accordingly, it may be said that the model of interactive direct teaching-based constructivist learning (IDTBCL) of education in terms of the practice of teacher-centered active learning or meaningful learning can to be an extremely promising approach. Ergül, Esra; Koç, Mustafa; Uzunboylu, H; Ozdamli, F
The purpose of this literature review is to determine the roles of animated agents in web-based distance education. The review was organized according to such themes as the structure and creation of animated agents, their cognitive and affective benefits, the importance of facial appearance and reality of animated agents in web-based distance learning and communication, and online animated agents. The instructional roles of animated agents were explored through a variety of experimental studies. The findings revealed that animated agents could take instructional roles such as a teacher, a mentor, a coach or an assistant in learning environments. Besides, multidisciplinary instructional environments enriched with animated agents could significantly contribute to the related literature in terms of the pedagogical outcomes they supply. The initiatives on the related context could be useful in order to fill the gap in Turkey. Therefore, it is suggested that animated agents should be integrated into web-based learning environments via considering the pedagogical elements in future studies. (C) 2013 The Authors. Takkac, Mehmet; Akdemir, Ahmet Selcuk; Uzunboylu, H
Globalism, in the modern sense, requires training global citizens with a logic viewing of individuals as members of a large family known as global world. In this process, national values, virtues, behaviors, traditions and aspirations must align with global expectations. However there may be differences in every aspect between nations, there must be conclusive attempts to make the bridge among different peoples of the world closer. To provide a better, safer and more livable world for the next generations, those in charge of education in today's world must do their best to determine the nature of global citizenship without disregarding national characteristics, and to lay the foundations for the future of humanity. This paper is intended to address the issue of global citizenship with a focus regarding national features as parts of a global whole. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Life positions scale developed by Boholst in 2002 consists of four sub-dimensions and 24 items. The language adaptation of the scale was done by Ahmet R. Ozpolat. The correlations between tinkish and english forms used for language adaptation were found significant at the level of p<.05, that is.79 for the whole scale,.77 for the I am Ok sub scale. For the sub scale I am not Ok, the result is.69,.76 for the You are OK subscale, and.70 for the You are not OK subscale.During the reliability studies, the scale was applied to 370 university students at Erzurum Atatiirk University. To determine the adequacy of the samples, the Kasier-Mayer-Olkin (KMO) value was observed and the result was.89. The coefficient of the internal consistency of the items was (a).84. Principal components factor analysis was also used for the construct validity and the data were subjected to varimax axis convert. Results showed that the scale displayed similar distribution to the original scale. The confirmatory factor analysis findings showed the following results (960.94) sd (195) (x(2)/sd= 4.92) RMSEA (.07) RMR_ (.08) SRMR (.07) GE' (.97) AGFI (.96) CFI (97). These findings verifies the correspondance of the original scale's structure. Therefore, it can be said that this scale can be appropriately used in the studies in Turkey to measure life positions.

Yalçn, Sema Altun; Yalçn, Sinan; Akcamete, G; Uzunboylu, H; Oulmu, S; Karahoca, A; Babadoan, C; Ozdamli, F; Kanbul, S
This study aims to determine the views of NOS of pre-service elementary teachers who are in the position of students. Also, it will be analyzed whether the pre-service student teachers' views on NOS will change thanks to education in their faculties. That is, analyzing the elementary teachers' views on NOS according to their academic level; it will be investigated whether there is any statistically significant difference. The study consists of 263 students of different academic levels who attended the department of elementary teaching in the education faculty of Bayburt in the 2008-2009 academic years. At the end of the study, it can be said that the faculties of education fulfill the post they take on. However it has been determined that the candidates do not have contemporary views on nature of science, but positive views. The faculties of education makes students acquire a view of the nature of science but cannot make them have a contemporary view of the nature of science. This results from the fact that teacher candidates cannot develop their views on the nature of science in their educational life before they come to education faculty. For this reason it is necessary that the students at every level develop their view on the nature of science. In this way, for the candidates acquiring the viewpoint of the nature of science will become easier.

Altun-Yalçn, Sema; Açşli, Sibel; Turgut, Ümit; Akcamete, G; Uzunboylu, H; Oulmu, S; Karahoca, A; Babadoan, C; Ozdamli, F; Kanbul, S
The term "scientific literacy" has become a dominant educational slogan and a major goal for science education in many countries over the past two decades. Although a scientifically literate society is an ultimate goal of science education in Turkey, as well as in other countries, there is not much information on scientific literacy levels even for people who deal with science first-hand. Whether people who deal with science, such as scientists and science teachers, have adequate levels of scientific literacy is still open to investigation. This study aimed to examine scientific literacy levels of pre-service science teachers at different grade levels (different class, eg., first year Science Teacher Training Departments' students). One of the aims of this study is investigating effectuality of the education faculties about developing scientific literacy. The study examined whether there is a statistically meaningful difference among science literacy levels of pre-service science teachers at different grade levels. The data obtained from the study contributed to determine at what levels scientific literacy of pre-service teachers were. Furthermore, it provided to be observed how the education in the Faculty of Education had affected scientific literacy levels of pre-service teachers as well. So, it is thought to make contribution to understanding how Education Faculties could perform the mission for which they are responsible in providing these students as teachers of the future with scientific literacy being one of the features a good teacher needs to have.
