Şenköylü, Alpaslan; Çetinkaya, Mehmet; Daldal, İsmail; Eren, Ali; Aktaş, Erdem

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes and the coronal correction rate of the main and accompanying curves of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) corrected with pedicle screws inserted consecutively or intermittently. Methods: The prospectively collected data of 60 patients (8 men and 52 women; mean age: 14.6±2.5 years) who underwent corrective surgery for AIS between January 2010 and December 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. Two groups were constituted according to the pedicle screw construct type: consecutive pedicle screw construct (CPSC) and intermittent pedicle screw construct (IPSC) groups. The preoperative, early postoperative, and 24-month follow-up radiographs and the Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) scores were reevaluated. The Cobb angle of the main and accompanying curves, the correction rate, and the flexibility of the curves were calculated. Results: The mean preoperative Cobb angles were 57.03° and 57.46°, the mean postoperative Cobb angles were 14.93° and 14.4°, and the mean correction rates were 76.22% and 75.31% in IPSC and CPSC groups, respectively (p>0.05). The preoperative and postoperative accompanying curve magnitudes and correction rates were similar (p>0.05). These radiographic outcomes were also consistent with the SRS-22 scores. Conclusion: Both the pedicle screw constructs had satisfactory outcomes following the surgery, which were confirmed by both the SRS-22 scores and radiographs taken perioperatively and at follow-ups. The IPSC and CPSC groups did not demonstrate a significant change in the correction rate of the main and minor or major accompanying structural and nonstructural curves, and also in the SRS-22 scores. Level of Evidence: Level III, Retrospective comparative study.

Vitamin e and Selenium Reduce Prednisolone Side Effects in Rat Hearts

Bardas, Ebru; Arslan, Yusuf Kemal; Polat, Seher; Erisir, Mine; Uslu, Gözde Atila; Cetin, Nihal; Cicek, Betul

Aim of this work was to determine the effects of dietary intake vitamin E and Se on lipid peroxidation (LPO) as Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and on the antioxidative defense mechanisms in heart tissues of rats treated with high doses of prednisolone. 250 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups and fed with normal diet. Additionally groups 3, 4, and 5 received a daily supplement in their drinking water of 20 mg vitamin E, 0.3 mg Se, and a combination of vitamin E and Se (20 mg/0.3 mg), respectively, for 30 days. For 3 d subsequently, control group was treated with placebo, and remaining four groups were injected intramuscularly with 100 mg/kg prednisolone. After last administration of prednisolone, 10 rats from each group were killed at 4, 8, 12, 24, and 48 h and the activities of antioxidant enzymes and the levels of GSH and TBARS were measured. GSH-Px, CAT activities and GSH levels decreased starting from 4th hour to 48% and 65% of control levels by 24th hour, respectively and it reincreased to control levels at 48th hour in the prednisolone group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). In addition, prednisolone administration led 2-fold increase in heart TBARS levels at 24th hour (p < 0.001). E vitamins and Se inhibited the increase in heart TBARS and the decrease in antioxidative enzymes levels. Therefore, It is concluded that vitamin E and Se may have a preventive role in decreasing the increase of TBARS caused by prednisolone administration in our study.

Despite the new treatment strategies within the last 30 years, peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is still a worldwide clinical problem. The incidence rate of PNIs is 1 in 1000 individuals per year. In this study, we designed a composite nanoplatform for dual therapy in peripheral nerve injury and investigated the in-vivo efficacy in rat sciatic nerve crush injury model. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) was loaded into poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) electrospun nanofibers which would release the drug in a faster manner and atorvastatin (ATR) loaded chitosan (CH) nanoparticles were embedded into PLGA nanofibers to provide sustained release. Sciatic nerve crush was generated via Yasargil aneurism clip with a holding force of 50 g/cm2. Nanofiber formulations were administered to the injured nerve immediately after trauma. Functional recovery of operated rat hind limb was evaluated using the sciatic functional index (SFI), extensor postural thrust (EPT), withdrawal reflex latency (WRL) and Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) test up to one month in the post-operative period at different time intervals. In addition to functional recovery assessments, ultrastructural and biochemical analyses were carried out on regenerated nerve fibers. L-929 mouse fibroblast cell line and B35 neuroblastoma cell line were used to investigate the cytotoxicity of nanofibers before in-vivo experiments. The neuroprotection potential of these novel nanocomposite fiber formulations has been demonstrated after local implantation of composite nanofiber sheets incorporating ALA and ATR, which contributed to the recovery of the motor and sensory function and nerve regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve crush injury model.

Ultrasonographic measurement of the thickness of cervical oesophagus layers in the reflux oesophagitis: Association with clinical findings

Yalcin, Ahmet; Taydas, Onur; Koc, Ural; Aydinli, Onur

Introduction: We aimed to evaluate the oesophagus of patients with reflux oesophagitis using ultrasonography and sought associations between the measurements of the mucosa, submucosa and muscularis propria, and endoscopic and clinical findings. Methods: Thirty-nine patients with endoscopically proven reflux oesophagitis and 19 patients with negative endoscopy for oesophagitis were included in the study. Two radiologists assessed the cervical oesophagus at the level of the thyroid gland. The data belonging to the ultrasonographic assessment of the patient group were compared to those of the controls. Results: The muscular, submucosal and mucosal thicknesses of the cervical oesophagus measured by two observers significantly differed between the patient and control groups. The P-values for mucosa, submucosa and muscularis propria were.02, <.001 and <.001, respectively for observer 1,.004,.001 and <.001, respectively for observer 2. The regression analysis showed that among the symptoms of heartburn, regurgitation and dysphagia, heartburn was independently associated with decreased mucosal and submucosal thicknesses of the oesophagus. Discussion: Our findings confirmed that the layers of oesophagus in the gastroesophageal reflux disease were thicker compared to those of healthy people. We also found that heartburn was associated with decreased thicknesses of mucosal and submucosal layers in patients.

Investigation of the relationship between cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy measurements and cerebrovascular event in coronary artery bypass grafting operation in patients without carotid stenosis and patients with carotid stenosis below surgical margins

Coskun, Ceyhun; Borulu, Ferhat; Emir, Izzet; Hanedan, Muhammed; Mataraci, Ilker

Objectives: Stroke is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in surgery. In the present study, we examined the cerebral oximetry values of patients with carotid artery stenosis who did not present surgical indications and those who did not present carotid artery stenosis in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery by comparing their cerebral oximetry values with cerebrovascular disease (CVD). Methods: Between January and May 2014, 40 patients who underwent isolated CABG were included in the study. Cerebral oximetry probes were placed prior to induction of anesthesia. Cerebral oximetry values were recorded before induction, in the pump (cardiopulmonary bypass) inlet period, in the post-clamp period, in the pump outlet period, and in the intensive care unit and neurological complications. Results: There was no difference between the groups in terms of demographic data and routine follow-up parameters. Intraoperative surgical data and early postoperative results were similar in both groups. When comparing the groups, there were no statistically significant results in cerebral oximetry values and CVD development. Only one patient in group 2 had postoperative CVD and this patient was discharged from the hospital with right hemiplegia. Mean arterial pressure (MAP)levels were significantly higher in Group 2 (P<0.05). Conclusion: The follow-up of cerebral perfusion with a method like near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) will ensure that MAP is adjusted with interventions that will be made according to changes in NIRS. Thus, it will be possible to avoid unnecessary medication and flow-rate increase with cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) follow-up.

Femoral Stem Fractures After Primary and Revision Hip Replacements: A Single-Center Experience

Köksal, Alper; Öner, Ali; Çimen, Osman; Aycan, Osman Emre; Akgün, Hakan; Yapıcı, Furkan; Çamurcu, Yalkın

Objectives: This study aims to present our experience in the management of fractured femoral stems after primary and revision hip replacements by evaluating the clinical and radiographic characteristics and determining the effectiveness of the extraction methods.Patients and methods: A total of 15 patients (5 males, 10 females; mean age 65.9 years; range, 49 to 87 years) who underwent revision hip replacement due to a fractured femoral stem between January 2005 and December 2019 were included in this retrospective study. The mechanisms and risk factors for failure as well as methods applied to extract fractured stem were analyzed through clinical and radiographic data. Results: Nine patients had fractured cemented femoral stems, while six patients had fractured fully porous coated cementless revision stems. Lack of proximal buttress in distally fixed femoral stems was detected in 11 patients and identified as the predominant mechanism resulting in fracture. The proximal extraction method with conventional revision instrumentation, the cortical window technique, and extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO) were used in three, seven, and five cases, respectively. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the lack of proximal buttress is the most common reason for femoral stem fracture. Moreover, the proximal extraction method was mostly ineffective in fully porous femoral stems. A step-by-step approach should be considered for the extraction of a broken stem. The cortical window method can be considered as the second step if proximal extraction methods fail, and ETO should be considered at the last step if all techniques fail.

The effect of adenosine triphosphate on sunitinib-induced cardiac injury in rats

    Aldemir, M.N.; Simsek, M.; Kara, A.V.; Ozcicek, F.; Mammadov, R.; Yazıcı, G.N.; Sunar, M.; Coskun, R.; Gulaboglu, M.; Suleyman, H.

In this study, we aimed to show the effect of adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) on sunitinib-induced cardiac injury in rats. The rats (n = 30) were divided equally into three groups as sunitinib group (SG), sunitinib plus ATP group (SAG), and healthy group (HG); 2 mg/kg ATP was injected intraperitoneally (ip) to the SAG group. Same volume normal saline as solvent was administered ip to the other two groups. After 1 h, 25 mg/kg sunitinib was applied orally via catheter to stomach in the SAG and SG groups. This procedure was repeated once daily for 5 weeks. At the end of this period, all animals were sacrificed and their cardiac tissue was removed. Malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) levels in rats’ cardiac tissues and troponin I (Tp-I) levels in rats’ blood samples were evaluated. Histopathological analysis was also performed in cardiac tissues of the animals. MDA, TNF-α, NF-κB, and Tp-I levels were higher in the SG group compared to the SAG and HG groups (p < 0.001). tGSH levels of the SG group were lower than the SAG and HG groups (p < 0.001). The structure and morphology of cardiac muscle fibers and blood vessels were normal in the control group. In the SG group, obvious cardiac muscle tissue damage with dilated myofibers, locally atrophic myofibers, and congested blood vessels were observed. In the SAG group, marked amelioration in these findings was observed. We showed this for the first time that ATP administration exerts a protective effect against cardiac effects of sunitinib.

Ucuncu, Osman; Baltaci, Cemalettin; Akar, Zeynep; Duzgun, Azer Ozad; Cuce, Mustafa; Kandemir, Ali

In this study, secondary metabolite profiles of flower, leaf and root of Adonis paryadrica ethanolic extracts were performed by using a newly developed and validated LC-MS/MS method. For this purpose, the LC-MS/MS system was used for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of 37 phytochemicals. The main component of the flower, leaf and root extracts was the quinic acid (160, 111 and 64 mg/kg, respectively). Antioxidant activities were determined using methods such as DPPH (SC50, mg/mL), FRAP (µM TEAC), CUPRAC (µM TEAC), ABTS (SC50, mg/mL) and TPC (GAE, µg/mL). While the highest antioxidant activity value for FRAP, CUPRAC, ABTS and TPC methods was determined in the leaf part of the plant, this value was determined in the flower part for DPPH. The antibacterial effects of the plant extracts were determined by liquid microdilution and agar diffusion methods. As a result, antimicrobial effect of flowers, leaf and all sections of plant extracts were determined except plant root extracts which did not display any activity against bacteria. Antimicrobial activity of the plant flower extract was found to be higher especially against to P. vulgaris with 3.5 mg/mL MIC.

Evaluating the relationship between the pleth variability index and hypotension and assessing the fluid response in geriatric hip fracture under spinal anaesthesia: An observational study

Küpeli, İlke; Subaşı, Faruk; Eren, Nurhan; Arslan, Yusuf Kemal

Objective: We aimed to test the efficacy of the pre-operative Pleth variability index (PVI) in evaluating hypotension that developed after spinal anaesthesia in patients who were spontaneously breathing, pre-operatively hypovolemic, and were at an advanced age. Methods: This observational study included 94 patients aged >65 years with hip fracture. Demographic data, pre-operative heart rate, non-in-vasive arterial pressures, PVI values, and haemogram values were continuously measured following spinal anaesthesia. The measurements with and without hypotension were distinguished and their data were compared. Results: The mean age of the patients was 77.4±8.2 years. In total, 56.4% of the patients developed hypotension after spinal anaesthesia, and hypotension was higher in women (p=0.037). Low pre-operative diastolic arterial pressures values were associated with the development of hy-potension (p=0.037). The relationship between PVI and post-spinal hypotension was negative but significant (r=−0.239; p<0.05). Depending on the volume loss, an increase in the PVI (p<0.001) and its subsequent significant decrease after treatment in patients with hypotension (p<0.001) was observed. The correlation between noninvasively measured haemoglobin values and the values obtained from arterial blood gas samples was significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that post-spinal hypotension may be associated with increased as well as decreased PVI values. However, these values cannot be clinically used for predicting pre-operative hypotension in hypovolemic patients.

Effect of Surgical Approaches on Deltoid Innervation and Clinical Outcomes in the Treatment of Proximal Humeral Fractures

Özbey Büyükkuşcu, Mehmet; Kulduk, Ahmet; Mısır, Abdülhamit; Çetinkaya, Engin; Çamurcu, smet Yalkın; Şükrü, Sarper Gürsu

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effects of deltopectoral and anterolateral acromial approaches commonly used in open reduction-internal fixation of proximal humeral fractures on the clinical outcomes, and axillary nerve damage through electrophysiological assessment. Patients and methods: Forty-eight patients (22 males, 26 females; mean age 47.9±13.2 years; range, 22 to 73 years) diagnosed with Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO)/Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) type 11 proximal humeral fractures who underwent osteosynthesis with anatomical locking plates in our hospital between January 2015 and June 2016 were prospectively examined. The patients were divided into two groups according to either the deltopectoral or anterolateral deltoid-split surgical approach used. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores and Constant-Murley scores (CMS) obtained at three- and 12-month follow-up visits. Needle electromyography (EMG) was performed for the electrophysiological assessment of the deltoid muscle. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of demographic data, follow-up times, and complications. DASH scores and CMS obtained postoperatively at three months (p=0.327 and p=0.531, respectively) and 12 months (p=0.324 and p=0.648, respectively) revealed no significant differences. In addition, the two groups did not significantly differ with respect to the presence of EMG abnormalities (p=0.792). Avascular necrosis of the humeral head was detected in only two patients from the deltopectoral group. Conclusion: Deltopectoral and anterolateral approaches do not differ regarding the presence of postoperative EMG abnormalities and functional outcomes. Surgeons can thus adopt either approach. However, dissection without damaging the soft tissue should be performed in both approaches.

Sulfonamides incorporating ketene N,S-acetal bioisosteres as potent carbonic anhydrase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors

Istrefi, Qëndresa; Türkeş, Cüneyt; Arslan, Mustafa; Demir, Yeliz; Nixha, Arleta R.; Beydemir, Şükrü; Küfrevioğlu, Ömer İ.

In this study, 15 novel compounds in a series of sulfonamide-based ketenes (7a–o) were synthesized and characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. All compounds were tested for their ability to inhibit the human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) isoforms I and II, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The halogen-appended compounds, 7g, 7o, and 7i, exhibited the highest hCA I/II and AChE inhibition, with the KI values in the low nanomolar range (KI = 9.01 ± 0.08, 7.41 ± 0.03, and 7.37 ± 0.31 nM, respectively), as compared with their corresponding parent 2-[2,2-dicyano-1-(phenylamino)vinylthio]-N-(4-sulfamoylphenyl)acetamide analogs 7a–o. Besides, derivatives 7c and 7e selectively inhibited the isoform hCA I, whereas compounds 7m and 7n selectively inhibited isoform hCA II. These findings indicated that all compounds can inhibit metabolic dysfunctions, such as edema, epilepsy, glaucoma, and Alzheimer's disease, by specifically targeting both the hCA isoforms and AChE expression. Herein, also the interactions between ligands and receptors were highlighted through in silico molecular docking studies. The molecular mechanics–generalized Born surface area method was utilized to compute the binding free energy and the energy contribution of the critical residues in the active site was estimated. All these results would help us to perfectly understand the relationship between activity and structural characteristics of derivatives and to further improve newly and highly effective analogs targeting hCA and AChE.

Nano-hydroxyapatite airborne-particle abrasion system as an alternative surface treatme method on intraorally contaminated titanium discs

Gümüş, Kerem Çağlar; Ustaoğlu, Gülbahar; Kara, Levent; Ercan, Esra; Albayrak, Önder; Tunali, Mustafa

The aim of this study was to test the nano-hydroxyapatite powder decontamination method on intraorally contaminated titanium discs and to compare this method with current decontamination methods in the treatment of peri-implantitis. Contaminated discs were assigned to six treatment groups (n = 10 each): titanium hand curette; ultrasonic scaler with a plastic tip (appropriate for titanium); ultrasonic scaler with a plastic tip (appropriate for titanium) + H2O2; short-term airflow system (nano-hydroxyapatite airborne-particle abrasion for 30 seconds); long-term airflow system (nano-hydroxyapatite airborne-particle abrasion for 120 seconds); Er:YAG laser (120 mJ/pulse at 10 Hz). There were also two control groups (n = 10 each): contaminated disc (negative control) and sterile disc (positive control). Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and dynamic contact angle analysis were used to determine the most effective surface-treatment method. The highest percentage of carbon (C) atoms was observed in the negative control group, and the lowest percentage of C atoms was found in the long-term airflow group, followed by the short-term airflow, laser, ultrasonic + H2O2, ultrasonic, and mechanical groups. When the groups were examined for wettability, the lowest contact angle degree was observed in the long-term airflow, short-term airflow, and laser groups. Nano-hydroxyapatite and laser treatments for detoxifying and improving infected titanium surfaces may show the most suitable results for reosseointegration.

Background: Open abdomen is the cornerstone of damage control strategies in acute care and trauma surgery. The role of BMI has not been well investigated. The aim of the study was to assess the role of BMI in determining outcomes after open abdomen. Methods: This is an analysis of patients recorded into the International Register of Open Abdomen; patients were classified in two groups according to BMI using a cutoff of 30 kg/m2. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality; secondary outcomes were primary fascia closure rate, length of treatment, complication rate, entero-atmospheric fistula rate and length of ICU stay. Results: A total of 591 patients were enrolled from 57 centers, and obese patients were 127 (21.5%). There was no difference in mortality between the two groups; complications developed during the open treatment were higher in obese patients (63.8% vs. 53.4%, p = 0.038) while post-closure complications rate was similar. Obese patients had a significantly longer duration of the open treatment (9.1 ± 11.5 days vs. 6.3 ± 7.5 days; p = 0,002) and lower primary fascia closure rate (75.5% vs. 89.5%; p < 0,001). No differences in fistula rate were found. There was a linear correlation between the duration of open abdomen and the BMI (Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient = 0,201; p < 0,001). Conclusions: Open abdomen in obese patients seems to be safe as in non-obese patients with similar mortality; however, in obese patients the length of open abdomen is significantly higher with higher complication rate, longer ICU length of stay and lower primary fascia closure rate. Yapici, Furkan; Ucpunar, Hanifi; Camurcu, Yalkin; Emirhan, Necati; Tanoglu, Oguzhan; Tardus, Ismail

Background: The Talon™ DistalFix™ Proximal Femoral Nail (Talon-PFN) is a new proximal femoral intramedullary nail designed for the treatment of intertrochanteric femoral fractures. This study aimed to report the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients treated using a proximal femoral intramedullary nail with a novel design. Methods: Patients with either stable or unstable (AO/OTA type 31-A1, 2, 3) intertrochanteric fractures who were treated with the Talon-PFN between October 2014 and January 2018 in our department participated in this retrospective study. Patients’ demographics, clinical characteristics, and functional and radiographical outcomes were evaluated. Results: A total of 110 patients (65 females, 45 males) with a mean age of 80.6 ± 9.1 years participated in this study. The mean follow-up time was 24 ± 13.4 months. The overall mortality rate during follow-up was 50.48%. The most common perioperative complications were a malposition of the femoral neck screw and talon cutout, both of which occurred in 17 patients (15.5%). The most common complications observed during follow-up were a lesser trochanter nonunion/malunion in 34 patients (30.9%), valgus malunion in 18 patients 16.4%), lateral screw migration in four patients (3.6%), and varus malunion in 15 patients (13.7%). A late screw cutout through the femoral head was seen in four patients (3.6%). At least one complication was detected in 53 patients (48.2%). However, revision surgery was performed in only six of these cases (5.5%). Conclusion: According to the results obtained in this study, the Talon-PFN, which has similar clinical and radiological outcomes compared to other proximal femoral intramedullary nail designs according to the reported studies, can be a suitable alternative in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures.

The role of 5-HT7 receptors on isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in rats with high-fat diet exacerbated coronary endothelial dysfunction

    Cinar, I.; Halici, Z.; Dincer, B.; Sirin, B.; Cadirci, E.

The presence of 5-HT7r’s in both human and rat cardiovascular and immune tissues and their contribution to inflammatory conditions prompted us to hypothesize that these receptors contribute in acute myocardial infarction (MI) with underlying chronic endothelial dysfunction. We investigated the role of 5-HT7 receptors on heart tissue that damaged by isoproterenol (ISO)-induced MI in rats with high-fat diet (HFD). In vitro and in vivo effects of 5-HT7r agonist (LP44) and antagonist (SB269970) have been investigated on the H9C2 cell line and rats, respectively. For in vivo analyses, rats were fed with HFD for 8 weeks and after this period ISO-induced MI model has been applied to rat. To investigate the role of 5-HT7r’s, two different doses of LP44 and SB269970 were evaluated and compared with standard hypolipidemic agent, atorvastatin. In vitro studies showed that LP44 has protective and proliferative effects on rat cardiomyocytes. Also in in vivo studies stimulating 5-HT7r’s by LP44 improved blood lipid profile (decreased total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-C, and triglyceride, increased high-density lipoprotein), decreased cardiac damage markers (creatine kinase and troponin-I), and corrected inflammatory status (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6). Our results showed significant improvement in LP44 administered rats in terms of histopathologic analyses. In damaged tissues, 5-HT7 mRNA expression increased and agonist administration decreased this elevation significantly. We determined for the first time that 5-HT7r’s are overexpressed in ISO-induced MI of rats with underlying HFD-induced endothelial dysfunction. Restoration of this overexpression by LP44, a 5-HT7r agonist, ameliorated heart tissue in physiopathologic, enzymatic, and molecular level, showing the cardiac role of these receptors and suggesting them as future potential therapeutic targets.

Can bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcine levels be used to determine the age in children?

    Topal, İsmail; Gümüş, Burak

Background Demand for age determination by medical methods from legal authorities is of critical importance, especially for people in pubertal age. We planned this study to evaluate the potential utility of biochemical methods in these applications. We aim to investigate whether alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), and osteocalcine can be used in the determination of age. Materials and Methods A total of 146 children (85 girls, 61 boys) between the ages of 9 and 16 years participated in the study. Considering legally defined age limits, we did the age grouping at the following intervals: we formed 3 different subgroups, (1) 9 to 11 years age group, (2) 12 to 14 years age group, and (3) 15 to 16 years age group. As the physiological growth and development processes changed according to sex, all calculations were done separately for girls and boys. Results Our data indicate that ALP and BALP values for girls can be used for age determination with acceptable sensitivity and specificity. However, we could not observe such precise distinction for boys. Although BALP is claimed to be superior to ALP, we have not found any evidence to confirm this in our study. Conclusions This study provides sex- and age-dependent cutoff values for ALP and BALP for the girl, which may be useful for age determination.

Introduction: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for 2–4 year olds (SDQ 2–4) is one of the best of these scales developed to screen children in early childhood for psychosocial problems. The aim of this study is to investigate the psychometric properties of SDQ 2–4 in Turkish for the age group of 2–4 years. Methods: The study was conducted with 159 participants. SDQ 2–4 Parent and BITSEA scales were applied to parents. Patients whose scores were detected to be at risk were referred to the hospital and a clinical interview was performed. Results: Chronbach alpha value for total difficulties scale was 0.80. Total difficulties score of the SDQ was positively correlated with the BITSEA/P score, and negatively correlated with the BITSEA/C score. Prosocial Behaviors score of SDQ was positively correlated with BITSEA/C while it was negatively correlated with BITSEA/P. In all scales of SDQ that identified the problem, the scores of the participants with clinical diagnosis were significantly higher than the scores of the participants not diagnosed. The cut-off value for total difficulties scale was calculated as 10 with 80% sensitivity and 88% specificity. Conclusion: The SDQ 2–4 scale is valid and reliable in the Turkish language.
