In the present study, a series of eleven novel 1,3-diaryltriazene-substituted sulfathiazole moieties (ST1–11) was synthesized by the reaction of diazonium salt of sulfathiazole with substituted aromatic amines and their chemical structures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H-NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), 13C-NMR, and high-resolution mass spectroscopy methods. These synthesized novel derivatives were found to be effective inhibitor molecules for α-glycosidase (α-GLY), human carbonic anhydrase (hCA), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), with KI values in the range of 426.84 ± 58.42–708.61 ± 122.67 nM for α-GLY, 450.37 ± 50.35–1,094.34 ± 111.37 nM for hCA I, 504.37 ± 57.22–1,205.36 ± 195.47 nM for hCA II, and 68.28 ± 10.26–193.74 ± 19.75 nM for AChE. Among the synthesized novel compounds, several lead compounds were investigated against the tested metabolic enzymes. More specifically, ST11 (4-[3-(perfluorophenyl)triaz-1-en-1-yl]-N-(thiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide) showed a highly efficient inhibition profile against hCA I, hCA II, and AChE, with KI values of 450.37 ± 50.35, 504.37 ± 57.22, and 68.28 ± 10.26 nM, respectively. Due to its significant biological inhibitory potency, this derivative may be considered as an interesting lead compound against these enzymes.

Background: We investigated the role of first metatarsal head shape in the etiology of hallux valgus. By pedobarographic analysis, we evaluated whether first metatarsal head shape causes an alteration in plantar pressure values that would result in metatarsalgia. Methods: Referrals to our clinic for metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, and calcaneal spur were scanned retrospectively. Patients with severe hallux valgus, pes planus, gastrocnemius stiffness, generalized joint laxity, neuromuscular disease, or a history of lower-extremity orthopedic surgery were excluded. Sixty-two patients with plantar pressure assessment and radiographic evaluation were included. These patients were invited for reassessment after 10 years. Feet were divided into three groups by metatarsal head shape: round, square, and chevron. On anteroposterior radiographs, the hallux valgus and intermetatarsal angles, relative first metatarsal length, lateral sesamoid subluxation, and presence of bipartite sesamoid were noted. Plantar pressure was assessed with pedobarography. Results: Feet with round-shaped first metatarsal heads had a statistically significantly greater progression in hallux valgus angle than the other shapes. Plantar pressures under the first, second and third, and fourth and fifth metatarsals increased with time. This can explain the mechanism of transfer metatarsalgia and painful callosities under the first metatarsal in hallux valgus. There was no correlation between hallux valgus angle, relative metatarsal length, and lateral sesamoid subluxation. Conclusions: We found a strong relation between round-shaped first metatarsal head and hallux valgus angle progression. No patients had a risk factor responsible for hallux valgus. In other words, this study gives approximately 10-year natural history results in nearly normal feet.

Erhan, Ertugrul; Bayram, Rana; Suleyman, Bahadir; Kurt, Nezahat; Suleyman, Halis; Salcan, Ismail
One of the major side effects of dose-limiting cisplatin is ototoxicity, resulting in restricted clinical use. Cerebrolysin is a neuroprotective, neurotrophic and antioxidant drug derived from the brains of pigs. No studies have investigated the positive effects of Cerebrolysin on the damage to auditory nerves caused by cisplatin- induced oxidative stress. Eighteen rats were randomly divided into three groups of six: the Cerebrolysin and cisplatin group (CCG), the cisplatin group (CG) and the healthy group (HG). The CCG was administered 2.5 mL/kg of Cerebrolysin via subcutaneous injection daily, while the CG and HG were administered physiological saline solutions daily. Every other day, after receiving their dose of Cerebrolysin or physiological saline solution, the CCG and CG groups were administered 5 mg/kg of cisplatin via intraperitoneal injection (IP) every other day. The substances were administered for eight days. In acoustic nerve tissue, while the CCís oxidant parameters were significantly higher (p < 0.0001) than those of the CCG and HG groups, its antioxidant parameters were also significantly lower (p < 0.0001). Cerebrolysin antagonized the balance of oxidants and antioxidants in acoustic nerve tissue, resulting in higher concentrations of oxidants. The results suggested that Cerebrolysin may be useful in the treatment of cisplatin-induced oxidative acoustic nerve injury.

Background/aim: Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) are full agonists of both cannabinoid receptors. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of SC users are mainly defined as diffusion restriction and T2/FLAIR hyperintensity. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies examining SC users have shown contradictory results. The aim of this study was to define white matter (WM) changes of SC users using DTI. Materials and methods: The study included 22 patients with a history of using SC for 5–37 months, and 22 healthy, age and sex-matched control subjects. A total of 41 diffusion gradient directions were used in the acquisition of diffusion imaging data. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) values were obtained. ROIs were placed on WM areas of normal appearance. Results: In the SC users, significantly lower FA values were determined in the left temporal lobe (216.2 ± 58.9 vs. 263 ± 27.4; P = 0.002) and right hippocampus (224.5 ± 61.5 vs. 255 ± 24.3; P = 0.040). The ADC values of the hippocampus and temporal lobe were significantly higher than those of the control group on both the left and right sides. Conclusion: The SC use causes WM microstructural changes, especially in the hippocampus and temporal lobes. DTI is a useful tool to reveal WM changes in SC addicts and can be used earlier than conventional MRI.

Appropriate measures of infection prevention and management are integral to optimal clinical practice and standards of care. Among surgeons, these measures are often over-looked. However, surgeons are at the forefront in preventing and managing infections. Surgeons are responsible for many of the processes of healthcare that impact the risk for surgical site infections and play a key role in their prevention. Surgeons are also at the forefront in managing patients with infections, who often need prompt source control and appropriate antibiotic therapy, and are directly responsible for their outcome. In this context, the direct leadership of surgeons in infection prevention and management is of utmost importance. In order to disseminate worldwide this message, the editorial has been translated into 9 different languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and Turkish).

Purpose: Acute methanol exposure leads to systemic intoxication and toxic optic neuropathy. In this experimental study, we aimed to determine the protective effects of intravenous administration of ATP in methanol-induced optic neuropathy. Materials and methods: A total of 18 male albino Wistar rats weighing between 267 and 282 g were used for the experiment. The animals were divided into three groups as healthy control (HC), methanol (M), and methanol + ATP (M-ATP) groups. Distilled water was given to the healthy control group (n = 6) as the solvent, while 20% methanol was administered orally to the rats in M (n = 6) and M-ATP (n = 6) groups at a dose of 3 g/kg. Four hours after the administration of 20% methanol orally to the M-ATP group, ATP was injected intraperitoneally at a dose of 4 mg/kg. Eight hours after ATP injection, the animals were sacrificed by high-dose (50 mg/kg) thiopental anaesthesia and biochemical and histopathological examinations were performed on the removed optic nerve tissues. Malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), total oxidant status (TOS) and total anti-oxidant status (TAS) were analysed with biochemical tests. Results: MDA, TOS and OSI were significantly higher and tGSH and TAS levels were significantly lower in methanol administered group compared with the healthy controls or M-ATP group (p: 0.001). There was not any significant difference between healthy controls and M-ATP group regarding the oxidative stress parameters. There was a significant destruction and increase in thickness and astrocyte numbers and edema-vacuolization in methanol administered group compared with the healthy controls or M-ATP group (p: 0.001). Conclusion: Intravenous ATP administration had a significant positive effect on the oxidative stress parameters and optic nerve structure in methanol-intoxicated rats. Antioxidant therapies should be considered in future studies as a possible therapy for methanol-induced toxic optic neuropathy.

Aroclor 1254 (A1254), a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls, exerts hepatic, renal, and reproductive toxicity in rodents. This study aimed to determine a protective role of selenium on histopathological changes, oxidative stress, and apoptosis caused by A1254 in rat kidney. It included a control group, which received regular diet containing 0.15 mg/kg Se (C), a Se-supplemented group (SeS) receiving 1 mg/kg Se, a Se-deficient group (SeD) receiving Se-deficient diet of ≤0.05 mg/kg Se, an A1254-treated group (A) receiving 10 mg/kg of Aroclor 1254 and regular diet, an A1254-treated group receiving Se-supplementation (ASeS), and an A1254-treated group receiving Se-deficient diet (ASeD). Treatments lasted 15 days. After 24 h of the last dose of A1254, the animals were decapitated under anaesthesia and their renal antioxidant enzyme activities, lipid peroxidation (LP), glutathione, protein oxidation, and total antioxidant capacity levels measured. Histopathological changes were evaluated by light and electron microscopy. Apoptosis was detected with the TUNEL assay. Kidney weights, CAT activities, and GSH levels decreased significantly in all A1254-treated groups. Renal atrophic changes and higher apoptotic cell counts were observed in the A and ASeD groups. Both groups also showed a significant drop in GPx1 activities (A-34.92 % and ASeD-86.46 %) and rise in LP (A-30.45 % and ASeD-20.44 %) vs control. In contrast, LP levels and apoptotic cell counts were significantly lower in the ASeS group vs the A group. Histopathological changes and renal apoptosis were particularly visible in the ASeD group. Our findings suggest that selenium supplementation provides partial protection against renal toxicity of Aroclor 1254.

Eşkisu, Mustafa; Çam, Zekeriya; Gelibolu, Sedat; Rasmussen, Kyler Ray
Facebook addiction is a growing issue that has increasingly attracted the attention of clinicians and researchers in a variety of countries and cultures. Relying on the Cognitive-Behavioral Model for Pathological Internet Use, and in a sample of Turkish undergraduates, we investigate whether mindfulness might account for how self-esteem and psychological problems (depression, anxiety, and stress) connect to Facebook addiction. A total of 298 college students completed measures of Facebook addiction, self-esteem, mindfulness and psychological problems, which we analyzed using path analysis, testing various models of how Facebook addiction might be predicted by these factors. We found that Facebook addiction was positively associated with psychological problems and negatively associated with self-esteem and mindfulness, with mindfulness fully accounting for the association between psychological problems, self-esteem and Facebook addiction. These results support the role of mindfulness in the prevention of Facebook addiction and the treatment of addicted individuals. This study also helps clarify previous research connecting mindfulness to Internet addiction, and extends those findings cross-culturally to a Turkish context.

OBJECTIVES: The effectiveness of the myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX) enzyme was investigated in the diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS: In total, 40 rats were divided into 5 groups (n = 8, for each group) while left kidney ischemiareperfusion was implemented in groups 2, 3, 4 and 5. Group 1 was the control group. Group 2 underwent 1-hour ischemia and 2-hour reperfusion. Group 3 underwent 1-hour ischemia and 4-hour reperfusion. Group 4 underwent 2-hour ischemia and 2-hour reperfusion. Group 5 underwent 2-hour ischemia and 4-hour reperfusion. RESULTS: Serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels in all ischemia-reperfusion groups were higher than in the control group (p<0.001). Serum MIOX level was higher in groups 2, 3 and 4 than in group 1 (p=0.002). Tissue MIOX level was lower in groups 2, 4, and 5 than in group 1 (p=0.039). Serum and tissue neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin levels were not signifi cantly different between the groups. The injury level in histopathologic examination was as follows: group 1<group 3<group 2=group 4<group 5. CONCLUSION: The serum MIOX level increases in the early stages of AKI, however, decreases subsequently. Therefore, the serum MIOX may be a potential promising biomarker in the early diagnosis of AKI (Tab. 5, Fig. 6, Ref. 30). Text in PDF www.elis.sk.

Sulfonamides known as inhibitors of many metabolic enzymes have been widely used as antimicrobial drugs for a long time. In the present study, we investigated in vitro inhibitory activities of benzenesulfonamide derivatives on human paraoxonase-I (hPON1). For this aim, PON1 was purified from human serum with a specific activity of 2603.57 EU/mg and 8.34% yield using simple chromatographic methods. The various concentrations of early-synthesized sixteen sulfonamide derivatives were tested on the paraoxonase activity. Ki values of compounds were found in the range of 0.28–357.70 µM. Compound H4 had the highest inhibitory activity on hPON1 as competitive. Estimated structure–activity relationship (SAR) for compounds was done based on different substituents and their positions in the compounds. Besides, the molecular docking analysis of compound H4 was performed to understand the binding interactions on the active site of the enzyme. According to these experimental results, compound H4 was a potential inhibitor of PON1.

Turkler, C.; Kulhan, M.; NG, Kulhan; Onat, T.; Yildirim, E.; Kaplan, S.; Suleyman, H.; Dinc, K.
AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of desflurane on reproductive capacity in female rats through a study of biochemical evaluations. METHOD: After experimental procedure, the blood samples of female rats were collected, and the malondialdehyde, interleukin-1-beta, total glutathione and superoxide dismutase levels were measured to evaluate oxidative stress. In addition to biochemical evaluations, the reproductive performance of the experimental groups was also examined. RESULTS: The results of our study demonstrated that in blood samples of desflurane-treated groups of rats, the parameters indicating oxidative stress and inflammation increased, and antioxidant parameters decreased (p < 0.05). It was also proven that repeated desflurane doses caused infertility in female rats, prolonged the gestation period and reduced the number of offspring. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that recurrent desflurane application can cause infertility problems through oxidative stress in female rats (Tab. 3, Fig. 1, Ref. 25). Text in PDF www.elis.sk.

Background/aim: An ultrasound-guided liver mass biopsy is a method frequently used in determining the diagnosis and treatment plan. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential new predictors of bleeding based on ultrasonographic features in liver mass biopsies, which are frequently applied in routine clinical practice. Materials and methods: The images and data of patients aged over 18 years, who underwent an imaging-guided percutaneous liver mass biopsy between January 2018 and December 2019 with various indications, were retrospectively reviewed. Liver size, liver steatosis status, parenchyma appearance, and mass vascularity on Doppler ultrasonography before the procedure, and hemoglobin (Hb) values before and after the procedure were recorded. Results: A total of 176 patients were included in the study. Ninety-six patients were male (54.5%) and 80 were female (45.5%). The mean age of the patients was 64 ± 12.3 years. The mean hemoglobin values of the patients were 11.5 ± 1.9 gr/dL before the procedure and 11.4 ± 1.5 gr/dL after the procedure. While 144 of the patients had less than 10% hemoglobin decrease (81.8%), 32 had more than 10% decrease (8.2%). In 56 patients, a heterogeneous and coarse granular pattern was observed in the liver parenchyma (31.8%). The decrease in the Hb rate was significantly higher in patients with heterogeneous and coarse granular liver parenchyma (8.7%) than in patients with normal parenchyma (6.6%) (P = 0.036). Conclusion: In our study, it was shown for the first time in the literature that the ultrasonographic appearance of the liver (heterogeneous and coarse granular parenchyma) may also be one of the parameters that can help to predict the risk of bleeding.

Ufuk, Furkan; Kaya, Furkan; Sagtas, Ergin; Kupeli, Ali
Non-thrombotic pulmonary embolism (NTPE) results from the embolization of non-thrombotic materials. It can often be a challenging diagnosis due to non-specific (similar to thrombotic pulmonary embolism) or uncommon clinical and imaging findings. Patients with NTPE often present to the emergency department with acute respiratory distress, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the chest and CT pulmonary angiography are the imaging modalities of choice for respiratory distress. Since the treatment of NTPE is entirely different from thromboembolism, its distinction is essential. Moreover, early diagnosis of NTPE is necessary. Radiologists must be familiar with the diagnostic findings of NTPE, and this article aims to review the imaging features of various causes of NTPE.

Background: Radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (r-ESWT) is commonly used for the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis. Previously in the urology literature, some studies reported hearing impairment after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. However, there is no study that evaluates the possible side effects of r-ESWT on the hearing function of patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of r-ESWT on the pure tone audiometry of the patients on whom r-ESWT was applied for chronic plantar fasciitis. Material and Methods: Patients with the diagnosis of plantar fasciitis who were treated with r-ESWT were included in this prospective case-control study. Before and after the r-ESWT application, all patients were consulted to our otolaryngology department for pure tone audiometric examination to detect any hearing impairment before and after the treatment. A control group was also constructed that consisted of patients who were admitted to our department for any complaint. Results: A total of 67 patients participated in the study. Radial ESWT group consisted of 47 patients (39 female, 8 male) with the mean age of 44.1 years. The control group consisted of 20 patients (12 female, 8 male) with the mean age of 36.9 years. We observed a 20-dB threshold shift at 8000Hz in 1 patient who had no clinical symptom. This patient had no threshold shift at the 1-month control audiometric measurement. Conclusion: According to the results acquired from this study, we can consider that r-ESWT treatment in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis has no markedly detrimental effect on the hearing function.

We examine the relationship between cryptocurrencies (namely Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Ripple (XRP)) and COVID-19 cases/deaths. This will help explore whether cryptocurrencies can serve as a hedge against COVID-19. The wavelet coherence analysis indicates that there is initially a negative relationship between Bitcoin and the number of reported cases and deaths; however, the relationship becomes positive during the later period. The findings for Ethereum and Ripple are also similar but with weaker interactions. This supports the hedging role of cryptocurrencies against the uncertainty raised by COVID-19.

Taydas, Onur; Ogul, Hayri; Kantarci, Mecit
Purpose: To demonstrate the clinical and radiological features of pericallosal and cisternal lipomas and to compare these two groups in terms of radiological and clinical features. Methods: This retrospective study included 23 patients diagnosed with pericallosal and cisternal lipoma between 2010 and 2017. The patients comprised 12 females and 11 males with a mean age of 38.8 years (range 12–69 years). Magnetic resonance imaging was applied to all the patients. Computed tomography (CT) was also performed in 10 patients. Results: 9 lesions were pericallosal and 14 were cisternal (7 were right quadrigeminal cistern, 3 were left quadrigeminal cistern, 1 was interpeduncular cistern, 1 was left cerebellopontine cistern, 1 was right cerebellopontine cistern, and 1 was supracerebellar cistern). The mean size of the lesions was 18.7 ± 10 mm. The shape of the lesions was curvilinear in 10 patients (43.5%) and tubulonodular in 13 patients (56.5%). The mean CT density of the lesions was − 87.7 ± 25.6 HU. The size of pericallosal lipomas (mean 27.5 mm) was statistically significantly larger than that of cisternal lipomas (mean 13.1 mm) (p = 0.001). No statistically significant difference was determined between the two groups in terms of lesion shape (p = 0.478), gender (p = 0.707), age (p = 0.639), and symptoms (p = 0.084). Conclusions: In this study, the incidence of pericallosal lipomas was 0.011% and the incidence of cisternal lipomas was 0.017%. Although rare, the knowledge of the clinical and radiological features of pericallosal and cisternal lipomas will play an important role in the accurate diagnosis and follow-up of the patient.

Fatihoglu, Erdem; Aydin, Sonay
Objective: Small for gestational age (SGA) is generally defined as birth weight being at or below the 10th percentile. Children with SGA have a higher risk for complications. There is a need for early predictors, as the accurate diagnosis rate is only 50%. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate diagnostic performance of ultrasound (US)/color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS) parameters (umbilical vein-UV, right portal vein-RPV diameter/flow rate, and portal sinus-PS diameter) examined at 20–22 gestational week as SGA diagnostic factors. Materials and methods: 93 pregnant included (32 SGA, 61 controls). All the US examinations were performed between 20 and 22 weeks of gestation. UV, RPV, and PS measurements were performed by using the same image acquired for abdominal circumference measurement. A fetus with as estimated fetal weight (EFW) below the 10th percentile was diagnosed as SGA and SGA at birth was defined as having a birth weight under the 10th percentile. Results: Pregnant women in the SGA group were significantly older (30 ± 4.8 vs. 26.6 ± 5.4 years, p < 0.01). Median UV diameter was significantly lower in SGA group (2.20 vs. 2.40 mm, p = 0.001). Median RPV diameter was significantly lower in SGA group (2 vs. 2.10 mm, p = 0.018). Median PS diameter was significantly lower in SGA group (2 vs. 20.10 mm, p = 0.008). Conclusion: UV, RPV, and PS diameters can be earlier predictors for SGA diagnosis. Routinely evaluation of these parameters during second trimester screening can increase SGA diagnosis rates and serve for early diagnose.

Purpose: Vandetanib is a wide spectrum tyrosine kinase inhibitor used for the treatment of metastatic medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) and various other cancer types. Although it is usually well-tolerated ıt has been linked to a variety of severe dermatologic reactions. Our study aimed was to investigate adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) on vandetanib-induced skin damage. Materials and methods: A total number of 18 rats were divided into three equal groups as vandetanib group (VDB), vandetanib plus ATP group (VAT), and healthy group (HG); 25 mg/kg ATP was injected intraperitoneally (ip) to the VAT group. Normal saline was given to the HG and VDB groups as solvent via intraperitoneally. One hour later, 25 mg/kg vandetanib was applied orally via an orogastric catheter in the VAT and VDB groups. This procedure was repeated once daily for 4 weeks. After that period, all animals were sacrificed and their skin tissues removed. Malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS) levels in rats’ skin tissues were evaluated with histopathological analyses. Results: MDA and TOS levels measured higher in the VDB group compared to the VAT and HG groups (p < 0.001). tGSH and TAS levels of the VDB group measured lower than the VAT and HG groups (p < 0.001). The structure and morphology of skin tissue were normal in the control group. In the VDB group, skin tissue damage with thinner epitelium, ruptured and degenerated hair follicles, abnormal accumulation of abnormal keratin on the epithelium and oedematous areas in the dermis was observed. In the VAT group, these findings were significantly improved. Conclusion: We demonstrated that adenosine triphosphate can prevent vandetanib-induced skin toxicity in rats for the first time. The promising results denote that further studies testing this agent in other animal models and in humans are warranted.

Cytarabine is effectively used in the treatment of adult acute leukemia, but it has a dose-limiting side effect of fatal pulmonary oedema because it increases the vascular permeability of the alveolar capillaries. The aim of the present study was to conduct a radiological, biochemical and histopathological investigation of the effect of rutin on cytarabine-associated pulmonary oedema in rats. Rats were treated with a combination of rutin+cytarabine by administering oral rutin at a dose of 50 mg/kg; other rat groups were orally administered the same volume of physiological saline. One hour after administration of rutin or saline, the rutin+cytarabine and cytarabine groups received an intraperitoneal injection of cytarabine (200 mg/kg). This administration procedure was repeated once a day for 14 days. Radiologically, 50% of the animals given cytarabine alone showed lung oedema, but the rutin+cytarabine group showed no oedema. The inclusion of rutin decreased the amounts of cytarabine-associated malondialdehyde, tumour necrosis factor-α, and nuclear factor-κB in the lung tissue. Rutin also inhibited the reduction of total glutathione by nitric oxide. These findings suggest that rutin may be a beneficial adjunct that can minimise the development of cytarabine-associated pulmonary oedema.
